Guido Santi began working in film in Italy. He was a pupil of director Ermanno Olmi in a group called "Ipotesi Cinema". His first short film Concertino was co-directed with his life time friend Marco Simon Puccioni and was produced by RAI the Italian public broadcaster. Puccioni and Santi then moved to the US attending two separate film school, Puccioni studied at CalArts, while Santi was admitted to the University of Southern California where he took a master's degree in film production. After the degree he went on to produce TV specials and documentaries and teaching filmmaking in US film schools. Together with his companion Tina Mascara he co-founded "Asphalt Stars Productions".

Santi became friend with Don Bachardy in 1992, Christopher Isherwood's life long partner. Santi eventually shot the successful documentary Chris & Don, which was released in 2008.

Santi taught Film Aesthetics and History of Cinema at the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California, where he died suddenly on February 4, 2019 due to a heart attack on the first day of College of the Canyon's Spring Semester
