Despite complications due to the coronavirus pandemic, Russia will take part in the world’s major film festival. The Russian Pavilion will open on July 6 at Village International in Cannes. The Pavilion traditionally represents Russia at the Festival and the Marché du Film market being the main information center for promoting Russian cinema on an international scale.

The Pavilion will become a place of offline discussions, presentations, and networking of Russian companies with their foreign partners. Russia’s Ctb Set to Follow Hit ‘Upon the Magic Roads’ With ‘Nutcracker,’ ‘My Sweet Monster’
Image
Russia’s Ctb Film Company, which celebrates its 30th anniversary next year, is set to follow its 2021 family adventure “Upon the Magic Roads” with two animated films, “The Nutcracker and the Magic Flute” and “My Sweet Monster.” The latter, scheduled for September release and already sold to several territories, including the U.S., Germany and France, will see a tantrum-prone teenage princess on the run, captured by the forest monster, whose peaceful existence is about to come to an end. As neither of them is ready to compromise, tensions run high.

“Besides the love story, there is a conflict between civilization – pictured in steampunk style – and nature. Not to mention we have a lot of comic situations between the main characters,” the company’s founder Sergey Selyanov shares with Variety ahead of the film’s presentation at the Key Buyers Event, organized by Roskino.

The same could be said about “Upon the Magic Roads,...

The Blackout: Invasion Earth - Jennie Kermode - 16468
Aleksey Chadov in Lyubov s ogranicheniyami (2017)
The alien invasion will not be televised.

Oleg (Aleksey Chadov) is in a hotel room sleeping with a stranger, Alyona (Lukerya Ilyashenko), when it happens. When they go down to the lobby, they see a newscaster on the big screen there frantically trying to get out a warning. Communication links to other cities are blinking out. Nobody can reach them. Could this be a nuclear war? Then the screen goes blank. People begin to panic. Many of them have loved ones elsewhere. They're anxious to know what has happened to them - and if whatever it is is coming for them next.

Oleg is a military man and knows what he has to do. Before long he's joined the troops who are guarding the border of the area of Eastern Europe which, mysteriously, still seems to be unaffected (the reason for this, when we get to it, proves to be one of.

The Blackout review – alien apocalypse has never been more dull
Aleksey Chadov in Lyubov s ogranicheniyami (2017)
A gang of macho Moscovites battle to save humanity in a sci-fi tale that offers a close encounter with the land of nod

We’re all going to die. And if you decide to sit through this crashingly loud apocalyptic Russian sci-fi, you may find yourself willing the fate of the Earth to hurry on up. It opens in Moscow in the nearish future, a neon cityscape where flying cars zip past glass skyscrapers. Off-duty soldier Oleg (Aleksey Chadov) is on a date in a swanky penthouse restaurant when planes start dropping out of the sky. Without warning, the world is plunged into darkness – everywhere except Moscow and the surrounding area. From here a garbled and very boring plot is spun.

‘The Blackout: Invasion Earth’ Review
Image
Stars: Aleksey Chadov, Pyotr Fyodorov, Svetlana Ivanova, Lukerya llyashenko | Written by llya Kulikov | Directed by Egor Baranov

Leave it to the bloody Russians to show everyone how to make an epic alien invasion flick… Over the years I have become aware of the fascinating knack that our friends over in Russia have of making just the most outlandish awesome epic movies. Night Watch and Day Watch are two of my favorite “vampire” movies (I’m still not sure they are vampires) out there. Earlier this year Why Don’t you Just Die came out which was a hell of a good time and I refuse to apologies for getting some guilty pleasure from that semi super hero flick Guardians.

I think the reason they are so good at making these epic movies so well is because they either don’t care about budget or they are just amazing at stretching their budget…...

The Blackout (2019)
Official Trailer for Sci-Fi Action Thriller 'The Blackout: Invasion Earth'
The Blackout (2019)
"Someone or something is plunging humanity into darkness..." Shout Studios has released an official trailer for a Russian sci-fi action thriller titled The Blackout: Invasion Earth, an extension of the original title The Blackout. So what's going on in this? Contact between most towns on Earth has been severed. A small ring-like area in Eastern Europe still has electricity, and maybe even life is being reported from space. What military forces find outside "the Ring" is shocking. There are dead everywhere: in stores, in cars, on roads, in hospitals and railway stations. Who or what is destroying all life on Earth? How long will the last outpost of mankind survive? Watch to find out! Starring Pyotr Fyodorov, Aleksey Chadov, Svetlana Ivanova, Konstantin Lavronenko, Lukerya Ilyashenko, and Kseniya Kutepova. Visually, this looks very cool (nice Blade Runner nod hanging off the building). But I'm not really sure what the heck is going on.
