A Remake Of ‘The Big Lebowski’? Geena Davis & Friends Gather For Reimagined Take On Coen Brothers Classic
Image
The 1998 Coen Brothers comedy The Big Lebowski contains so many unforgettable scenes it would be hard to enumerate them all. One of them, surely, is when Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) and Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) drive to the San Fernando Valley to retrieve a briefcase full of money they are convinced has been purloined by Little Larry Sellers (Jesse Flanagan), a middle schooler.

Walter and the Dude confront Little Larry with a piece of schoolwork left in the Dude’s vehicle – evidence they believe confirms Little Larry’s culpability in the disappearance of the briefcase.

What if the roles of the Dude, Walter, Little Larry – not to mention Brandt, Donny, Jesus Quintana, and The Stranger – had been played by female actors instead of male? That’s the possibility explored at Geena & Friends, an event last weekend at the 11th annual Bentonville Film Festival in Arkansas, chaired by Oscar winner Geena Davis.

But Allyson turned adversity into action, redefining what it means to be a champion and sparking a movement far beyond the track. Felix’s rejection of the status quo...

One of my favorite types of movie to watch is the wilderness-set slasher movie, particularly summer camp slashers, with my favorite film franchise being Friday the 13th. When you’re an independent filmmaker, there are a few different ways of working within the TV/streaming space. You could be a TV repairman (of any gender!) or work for the cable company. Review: Joanna Arnow’s The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed
Joanna Arnow
In The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, writer-director-star Joanna Arnow plays Ann, a thirtysomething woman in a long-term Bdsm relationship with the much older Allen (Scott Cohen). The film opens on a naked Ann lying in bed beside a clothed Allen, before she turns and robotically dry humps him while he feigns sleep. “I love how you don’t care if I get off,” Ann coos to him. “It’s like I don’t even exist.” While this moment immediately establishing the playful rules of Ann and Allen’s sexual agreement, Arnow also hits on an apt metaphor for the existential crisis of so many modern millennials: that they’re exposed and ignored in an unforgiving social climate still dominated by older generations.

Ann’s affair with Allen is indicative of the rest of her day-to-day existence. As a “Clinical eMedia Learning Specialist” at a banal New York corporate office,...

Netflix Slammed By Orange Is The New Black & Gilmore Girls Actors Over Poor Residuals
Image
Stars from both the Orange is the New Black and Gilmore Girls casts are not holding back in their frustrations with Netflix amid the ongoing actors strike. Netflix is one of the many streaming platforms under target from both SAG-AFTRA and the Writer's Guild of America in the ongoing actor and writers strikes, calling for fairer wages, namely in regard to the residuals they receive from projects on said streamers. Both guilds are also raising concerns over increasing use of artificial intelligence in regard to production and losing their jobs.

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Gilmore Girls alum Sean Gunn, now better known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, on the frontlines of one of the picketing groups of actors in Los Angeles.

Orange Is the New Black’s Supporting Cast Break Silence on Unfair Payment
Image
Earlier this week, it marked ten years since Orange Is the New Black premiered on Netflix, quickly becoming one of the most popular and acclaimed series on the streaming service. After seven very well-received seasons, the show created by Jenji Kohan came to an end in 2019 and to this day remains one of the best on the streaming platform.

Based on the book Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison by Piper Kerman, which recounts her own experiences in federal prison, the series follows the story of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), who must face sentence after having helped her ex-girlfriend Alex Vause (Laura Prepon) to move illegal money to different countries as part of a drug trafficking network.

However, the main attraction of the show was not exactly Piper's story, except for her romance with Alex, but the past and present of all the inmates.

‘Orange Is the New Black’ Supporting Cast Say They Were Never Fairly Compensated for Netflix Hit
Image
Orange Is the New Black helped put Netflix on the map. Now, several of the supporting stars on the trailblazing prison dramedy are looking back on the show’s breakout and continued success to ask why they weren’t fairly compensated.

Their questions, coming as the Jenji Kohan-created series celebrates the 10-year anniversary of its July 11, 2013, premiere, surfaced in a New Yorker story published ahead of SAG-AFTRA announcing an actors strike after the union failed to reach a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) group of studios and streamers. And many of the Oitnb castmembers’ woes reflect the issues at heart of the tense negotiations between SAG and the AMPTP.

Ten Oitnb recurring stars (some who were later upped to series regulars) — including Kimiko Glenn, Alysia Reiner, Beth Dover, Emma Myles, Diane Guerrero, Taryn Manning and Lea DeLaria — spoke with writer Michael Schulman about...

Cannes Sales So Far: Wim Wenders’ 3D Doc ‘Anselm’ Lands at Sideshow and Janus Films
Image
The 2023 Cannes Market is behind us, and like clockwork, Neon managed to buy the winner of the Palme d’Or for the fourth straight year, Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall.”

But that wasn’t the only major sale. This year’s Marché du Film netted major domestic deals for some of the buzziest competition titles such as Todd Haynes’ “May December” and Aki Kaurismäki’s “Fallen Leaves,” as well as hot packages like “Paddington 3.” But uncertainty over the writers strike still loomed large, and distributors favored completed projects over packages.

Below are some of the deals we’ve tracked out of Cannes so far, and we’ll be updating this space with more sales as they come in.

Title: “Anselm”

Section: Special Screenings

Distributor: Sideshow and Janus Films

Wim Wenders had not one but two separate films play at this year’s Cannes, and now each have found a home.

Loco Films is handling international sales on the title. The film is a major breakthrough for Arnow, who not only makes her narrative feature directing debut, but also wrote, edited and stars in the picture.

Critics liked her vision, with Variety‘s Catherine Bray praising “The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed” as “brilliantly sardonic” and adding that “you would hope that this is the kind of film that would lead to fame and fortune for Arnow.” The film follows the life of a thirtysomething woman named Ann, as she engages in a casual Bdsm relationship, grapples with her low-level corporate job, and deals with her bickering family.

‘The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed’ Review: A Young Woman Seeks Debasement
Image
[Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Magnolia Pictures will release the film in U.S. theaters April 26.]

“I love that you never do anything for me…it’s like I don’t even exist.”

That’s what Ann, a depressed thirty-something New Yorker, tells her older on-and-off Bdsm lover in the first scene of writer-director Joanna Arnow’s “The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed,” in which the filmmaker also stars as Ann. Her heroine is an existentially moribund millennial wasting away in an anonymous-feeling corporate job who passes her time with sexual debasement when not quarreling with her nagging Jewish family.

This clever and disquieting indie unfolds at a clip somnambulant enough to match its lead’s spiritual stupor, whether she’s spreading her ass for her partners (clients?) or on the phone with her needling mother insisting that, no, she isn’t running out of breath despite trudging up and down the Manhattan streets.

‘The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed’ Review: With Wry Wit, Joanna Arnow Presents Millennial Life in All Its Mundanity
Image
It takes a moment to settle into the rhythm of Joanna Arnow’s droll directorial debut The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed. The beginning riffs on a familiar scene of lovers in post-coital repose before offering something so different, it’s hard not to laugh. Ann (Arnow) lays on the sheets, staring at Allen (Scott Cohen), who is asleep under the covers. She inches closer until she’s on top of him. Then, the humping begins. “I like how you don’t care if I get off,” she says, “because it’s like I don’t even exist.” To that, her lover tiredly replies: “Can you not?”

Like most of the dialogue in The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed, this line is delivered without any affect or hint of emotion. Arnow’s directorial debut plays with the mundanity of existence by extracting...

‘Law & Order': Former Star Elisabeth Röhm Loved Helping Odelya Halevi’s Character ‘Come Into Her Own Power’
Image
Elisabeth Röhm, who played Ada Serena Southerlyn on “Law & Order” from 2001 to 2005, returned after 17 years to direct last week’s episode “Only the Lonely” through NBCU’s Launch Female Forward program.

“It’s poetic to come back at this juncture of my life,” Röhm told TheWrap. “Dick Wolf gave me my first opportunity as an actress, and he gave me my first opportunity as an episodic director.”

“It’s almost surreal. I can’t explain how monumental it was to share in those scenes with the new cast. Odelya especially, just to help her, elevate her, support her, and help develop that character. And just be a part of the story of the new reboot,” said Röhm about the episode, in which Odelya Halevi’s character, Ada Samantha Maroun, stands up for a female witness, played by Alysia Reiner, whose reputation as a lawyer will be ruined if she’s forced to testify.

‘Law & Order’ A.D.A. Maroun Defends a Female Witness: ‘Men Bounce Back From Scandals, Not Women’ (Exclusive Video)
Tony Goldwyn, Maura Tierney, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Mehcad Brooks, and Odelya Halevi in Law & Order (1990)
In this exclusive “Law & Order” clip from Nov. 10’s “Only the Lovely” episode, A.D.A. Samantha Maroun (Odelya Halevi) stops male colleagues Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) and Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) in their tracks when she takes the side of a reluctant female witness over theirs.

The case involves the murder of a female crisis consultant, which leads to Devon Miller (Mark Feuerstein), a con man who was a companion to several high society women. McCoy wants one of Miller’s other targets, Grace Pollard (Alysia Reiner), to testify, but she refuses as it would ruin her reputation as a lawyer who has advocated for women’s rights.

Nolan impatiently states, “Her ego is getting in the way,” but Maroun emphatically disagrees.

“No. It’s about legacy, preserving all the causes she’s advocated for,” she tells McCoy and Price, who are stunned by her vehemence on the issue.

USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative Launches Study Of Hollywood’s Depiction Of Abortion, Gun Violence & Marriage Equality
Image
The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, known for its oft-critical reports on Hollywood’s hiring practices and portrayals of underrepresented groups, is launching a “new focus” that will measure the film and TV industry’s depictions of a wide range of political issues, including abortion, gun violence, voting, marriage equality and interracial relationships.

The new approach comes in response to the Supreme Court’s overturning Roe v. Wade and concerns that other long-held rights also might be in danger.

“With the curtailing of reproductive rights, it is not only necessary to find legal solutions to protect marginalized communities, but it is essential to educate and inform audiences about these topics,” said Dr. Stacy L. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “Entertainment has a unique ability to reach viewers and provide that education. Our goal is to illuminate how many opportunities there are to use storytelling as a tool to expand...
