Biography

    • Kayla Robinson is an accomplished director and storyteller who was raised in the culturally vibrant San Antonio, TX. A deep appreciation for the unique customs of others inspired a lifetime of travel and curiosity to excavate the nuances and similarities of the human experience. She is drawn to character-driven stories that center marginalized perspectives exploring identity, grief and connection.

In the narrative space she recently directed the short film "I Used to Love Her", which explores the lingering memory of lovers lost. Her short film "Ball is Ball" received high praise on the festival circuit for its honest portrayal of PTSD and its lasting effects on trauma survivors. In documentary, her short "Quilted Education" celebrates her mother's artistry and determination to fill the educational void regarding Black History within the public school system. The film has screened across the country including the Oscar-qualifying Austin Film Festival, New Orleans Film Festival, and Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival. In addition, the film has appeared on broadcast and streaming via PBS. In 2023, she was recognized by American Documentary as a Wyncote Fellow.

Previously a career ad-woman in New York and Silicon Valley, Kayla brings a deep understanding of the commercial landscape and the delicate balance between creativity and marketing. Working with brands like Apple, Google and Snickers she has racked up millions of views for her original concepts. Some of her honors include Cannes Lions, Clio, D&AD and The One Show.

Based in Los Angeles, Kayla just launched her miniseries "Quilted Stories with Ms. Karen" in partnership with PBS KLCS. The series combines live action and animation to celebrate achievements in Black history, present and past.
