‘Damn Handy’ – Watch ‘The Craft’ Writer’s Horror Short Starring ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’s Roger Clark
Image
When a plumber visits the remote farmhouse of two murderous sisters, he’ll need a trick up his sleeve to survive in Damn Handy.

Written and directed by The Craft and Flatliners screenwriter Peter Filardi, the 18-minute horror-comedy can be viewed in its entirety below.

Roger Clark, best known for portraying Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption II, stars alongside Kaili Vernoff, who played Susan Grimshaw in the video game. Kellari Crispin, Elliot Evans, Jason Deshefy, and Colin Clark round out the cast.

Winner of Best Short Film at the Chattanooga Film Festival, Damn Handy‘s crew features local high school students in key positions.

“These shorts don’t make any money,” Filardi told me during a set visit. “They’re just to have fun, to teach, to inspire, to share my passion for horror movies with other people. I’ve always been open to the collaborative process.”

He continued,...

John Cleese's Official Redesign of Batman Is Hilariously Literal
Image
Superman accidentally creates "Bat-Man" after a cricket game mishap. Batman seeks revenge on Superman by exposing his true identity. John Cleese's humorous take on Batman vs. Superman is a refreshing twist.

From a dark God who watches over Gotham to a vigilante in Victorian England, there have been countless interpretations of Batman over the years. But his most hilarious re-invention came when famous comedian John Cleese changed Batman's origin to make him a victim of Superman's super-strength after a disastrous cricket game.

Superman: True Brit by Kim Johnson and John Cleese set out to answer the timeless question of "What if Superman were British?" This experiment naturally had hilarious results, as Superman was encouraged to never use his powers (for fear of what the neighbors would think). This led Superman to repress any memory of his powers, including his super strength.

During a cricket game, Superman accidentally tosses his...

Monty Python's John Cleese Transformed Superman by Making 1 Change to His Origin
Image
Superman lands in the UK, named Colin Clark, with a different upbringing & daily life struggles. Colin works at the untruthful Daily Smear, reveals his identity, and only then moves to the Daily Planet. Despite hardships, Colin/Kent Clark upholds heroic ideals, proving that origins don't define a hero — especially Superman.

One of the most well known comic book origins is that of Superman. It's been parodied over the years by just about everyone, and the planet of Krypton is well known in pop-culture. Plenty of writers have tried to leave their touch on Superman's iconic origin, and John Cleese of Monty Python fame made a few hilarious changes to Superman's origin as well.

In Superman: True Brit by Kim Johnson and Cleese, Superman's ship doesn't land in the United States as usual, but instead lands in the United Kingdom. Superman is found by the Clark family, where he's given the...

Harvey Weinstein Threw A Wrench In Eddie Redmayne's My Week With Marilyn Performance
Image
As if the divisive reception to Andrew Dominik's "Blonde" wasn't already an indication, the legacy of Marilyn Monroe still shows widespread interest in her story. The "Some Like It Hot" star is propped up as one of the great Hollywood legends, after all. She represented the glamor of show business, but behind closed doors, the life of Norma Jeane was a bit more complicated.

In 1956, Monroe traveled to London, where she was going to star in Laurence Olivier's "The Prince and the Showgirl." During production, the actress notoriously had a difficult time learning her lines, as well as showing up to set on time. The 2011 biographical drama "My Week With Marilyn" depicts this period of Monroe's life, where she formed a kinship with production assistant Colin Clark. He was her wrangler of sorts, and one of the people who got to see a side of Monroe few ever did.

Eddie Redmayne's 10 Best Movies, According To Letterboxd
Image
With The Good Nurse now streaming on Netflix, Eddie Redmayne returns to the big screen as the bloodthirsty Nurse Cullen in a chilling account of a real-life disaster in New Jersey throughout the '80s and '90s. Many critics claim that Redmayne provides one of his most compelling performances as this unsettlingly logical killer.

The Good Nurse is completely unlike anything that Redmayne has done before, channeling a totally different kind of character that's sure to take audiences by surprise. It might not be the most prestigious or spectacular film under his belt, but his turn as Charles Cullen will undoubtedly stand out within his filmography.

Such is the case for Lady Gaga, whose wax sculpture was recently unveiled at an art exhibition in Lima, Peru. Suffice to say, it looks nothing like her, and we aren't the only ones who think so. Interview, Audio: Director Simon Curtis of ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’
Chicago – Winnie the Pooh is a cultural icon of four generations, due both to the character’s literary roots and Walt Disney’s interpretation. A new film, “Goodbye Christopher Robin,” is the origin story of the famous bear, as created by author A.A. Milne. The movie is directed by veteran helmsman Simon Curtis.

“Goodbye Christopher Robin” features Dohmnall Gleeson as A.A. Milne, who was a notable playwright in 1920s England, but found himself at a crossroads in his career. Moving to the country, he began to find inspiration in the imagination of his son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston as the younger Cr) and created the books of Winnie the Pooh. The book was a runaway best seller – much to the pleasure of his flapper wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) and the consternation of the boy’s nanny (Kelly Macdonald) – but a torture to the actual Christopher Robin, who couldn’t understand the family’s sudden fame.

Interview: Director Simon Curtis Fashions the ‘Woman in Gold’
Chicago – The painting “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer” was created by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, and was considered Austria’s greatest artwork. The remarkable journey of the painting, stolen from its original Jewish family by the Nazis during World War II, is the basis for the new film, “Woman in Gold,” directed by Simon Curtis.

“Woman in Gold” is based on the true story of Maria Altmann (portrayed in the film by Helen Mirren), a Viennese immigrant in the United States who fought the Austrian government for rightful claim to her family’s paintings in the 1990s, including the famous gold leaf portrait of her Aunt Adele. Altmann brings in an American lawyer named Randol Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds) to act as her lawyer, and their years of litigation to make this art restitution was one of the most high profile of these cases. The film includes flashbacks of the family in Vienna during those war years,...

Toby Kebbell Cast As Doctor Doom In Fox’s Fantastic Four Reboot
A few weeks ago, we reported that Fox had narrowed the pool of candidates for the role of Doctor Doom in its Fantastic Four reboot to four actors: Sam Riley, Eddie Redmayne, Domnhall Gleeson and Toby Kebbell. Now, it appears that we have a winner, with news that Kebbell has been officially offered the part.

The casting comes as somewhat of a surprise, considering Kebbell is the least known of all the candidates, with mostly minor supporting roles (in everything from War Horse to Wrath of the Titans) to his name. All the other actors in consideration have at least had lead roles before; Riley starred as Sal Paradise in Beat biopic On the Road, Redmayne played Marius in Les Miserables and starred in My Week with Marilyn as filmmaker Colin Clark, and Gleeson had a big hit last fall with About Time. Evidently, Fox believes that Kebbell has the...

Mad Max's Weekend Movie Guide: 'Oz' & More
"Frightened? Child, you're talking to a man who's laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom, and chuckled at catastrophe ... I was petrified." –'The Wizard of Oz' (1939)

Blu-ray Review: Middling ‘My Week with Marilyn’ Bolstered by Top-Notch Cast
Chicago – Last year’s slate of Best Actress Oscar-nominees was among the weakest in recent memory. There was no clear front-runner since there was no picture worthy of the exemplary actress at its core. From Meryl Streep in “The Iron Lady” to Glenn Close in “Albert Nobbs,” 2011 deserves to be remembered as the year of great female performances trapped in subpar material.

Perhaps the most frustrating misuse of talent is contained within TV veteran Simon Curtis’s feature debut, “My Week with Marilyn,” an adaptation of a memoir written by Colin Clark, who served as Third Assistant Director on the set of 1956’s unremarkable romance, “The Prince and the Showgirl.” The film was most famous for teaming up the unlikely duo of Sir Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe, who would subsequently go on to deliver some of the most acclaimed work of their careers.

Blu-ray Rating: 3.0/5.0

Mark Kermode's DVD round-up
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1; The Help; My Week With Marilyn; Straw Dogs; Mysteries of Lisbon

Fans of Stephenie Meyer's addictive teen Twilight novels (whose number may be few among Observer readers) have long been worrying how the ongoing screen adaptations of her international bestsellers would handle the twisted psycho-sexual contortions of the final instalment. On the evidence of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 (2011, EOne, 12) the answer is "not without a little difficulty". Director Bill Condon may be a safe pair of hands, but even under his mainstream moderation this tale of fatal attraction, vampire babies and alien love triangles still drifts into territory in which Davids Lynch or Cronenberg may have been more at home. Certainly, Bella's descent into living death in the wake of her long-awaited marriage to Edward contains some stark visual imagery, which pushes at the boundaries of the 12 certificate. Watching her wither...

Contest Giveaway: 5 Copies Of 'My Week With Marilyn' On DVD
Beautiful, insecure, talented, ambitious, shy, sexy, manipulative, charming, sweet, sad...Marilyn Monroe was all of these things and more. And Michelle Williams captured every side of Monroe in her Oscar-nominated turn in "My Week With Marilyn," a slice out of the legendary actress' life that serves as an illuminating window onto the price of fame, and the weight of expectation.

Directed by Simon Curtis, the drama centers on Colin Clark (played by Eddie Redmayne), an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier's production company, who documented the tense interaction between Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during the making of "The Prince and the Showgirl" during the late 1950s. Clark quickly became close with Monroe during the filming, and "My Week With Marilyn" is a dramatization of the brief time he spent with her. The movie features an all-star cast of supporting players including Kenneth Branagh as Olivier (also nominated for an Oscar), Dougray Scott,...

Janet Leigh in Psycho

Photo: Universal Studios Home Entertainment It was announced late yesterday that Scarlett Johansson will be playing Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho directed by Sacha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story of Anvil). Fine. Whatever. I'm sure we'll see a recreation of the iconic shower scene and I hope, at the very least, there will be a scene dedicated to the conversation between Hitchcock and screenwriter Joseph Stefano with Stefano urging Hitchcock to show the flushing toilet. Yeah, that would be a highlight for me. Along with Johansson, James D'Arcy has been added to the cast as Anthony Perkins and the two join Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren who will play Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville respectively. The story is said to center on the relationship between Hitch and Alma as he sets about making what has become one of the most iconic horror movies of all time.

Unsexing Marilyn Monroe | Lee Siegel
My Week with Marilyn envelops the star in a chaste aura. This desire to desexualise goes back to Arthur Miller

It is not entirely the fault of the recent movie My Week with Marilyn – about Monroe's disastrous attempt to make The Prince and the Showgirl with Laurence Olivier – that it is devoid of sex, which is something like depicting the life of Napoleon without mentioning that he was French. Monroe might have been one of the most sexual beings who ever lived, but the portrayals of her, even by disillusioned observers, sooner or later descend into a sanitised ideal.

The sex is overtaken by sentimental treacle, or heroic fantasy, or defensive over-analysis. In his book on Monroe, Norman Mailer, for all his worldly candour, concluded that "she was our angel, the sweet angel of sex, and the sugar of sex came up from her like a resonance of sound in...

Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn (2011)
Our Generation's Sir Larry
Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn (2011)
New York -- Long before Kenneth Branagh stepped into the role of Sir Laurence Olivier in "My Week With Marilyn," there already were strong parallels between them.

Both are synonymous with film adaptations of William Shakespeare, delivering lines with implausible realism, and earning accolades for their troubles. Each starred and directed their own successful adaptations of "Hamlet," and "Henry V," that earned Oscar nods for their work on both sides of the camera. (Olivier received an honorary award that included directing the film).

With such similarities, it seems fitting that Branagh earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as the legendary actor.

"He was a master of his craft, and at the same time very vulnerable," Branagh says of Olivier.

"My Week with Marilyn," is in theaters and stars two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. It's based on the writings of Colin Clark, who spent a week...

Kenneth Branagh My Week With Marilyn Interview
In the much buzzed about My Week with Marilyn – currently in limited release and opening wide on Christmas Day – 23-year-old, first-time production hand, Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), went to work on Laurence Olivier’s (Kenneth Branagh) The Prince and the Showgirl. When American film star Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams) experienced emotional difficulties during shooting, Colin came to her aid and romance developed. Unfortunately, one week of fun was just not enough to save the doomed star from her eventual self-destruction. At a press day for the film, actor Kenneth Branagh talked about creating a character instead of just doing an impersonation of Laurence Olivier, how his admiration for the star only increased while researching him, working with both Michelle Williams and Julia Ormond (who plays Vivien Leigh), and the fact that he never met but did correspond once with Olivier. He also said that he hopes to be directing next,...

Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn (2011)
Did The Famous Marilyn Monroe Affair Really Happen?
Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn (2011)
The new film "My Week With Marilyn" tells the story of a brief yet wondrous puppy dog love affair between Marilyn Monroe and a young gofer on the set of "The Prince and the Showgirl." Michelle Williams has drawn raves for total inhabiting of Monroe, but while her performance may ring authentic, there are new questions being asked about the truthfulness of the story on which the film is based.

A new article in the La Times digs deep into the alleged affair between Monroe and Colin Clark, the then-gofer who would go on to write the two books that inspired the film: "The Prince, the Showgirl and Me," and "My Week With Marilyn." The latter describes the short fling between Clark and Monroe, who is portrayed as desperate for love in a foreign land and distraught by misgivings over her new husband, Arthur Miller.

Those that were on set...

Marilyn Monroe and Margaret Thatcher: the iron ladies
Monroe and Thatcher might seem to have played opposite roles. But the biographical films My Week with Marilyn and The Iron Lady suggest that their similarities outweighed their differences

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, impersonation is fast becoming our culture's favourite form of acting. At least since Nicole Kidman's nose won an Oscar for playing Virginia Woolf in The Hours, famous actors have been applauded for pretending to be other famous people: Helen Mirren as the Queen, Michael Sheen as David Frost, Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes, Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn, the list of actors nominated for Oscars for impersonating famous people goes on and on. Now we have two more to add to the list, in star turns already accumulating predictions of Oscar nominations: Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, and Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

My Week With Marilyn
Nearly fifty years after her death, the jury is still out on the quality of Marilyn Monroe’s acting ability. This struggle to see the talent for the celebrity is just as common a dilemma in today’s paparazzi-infested environment—just ask George Clooney, Jennifer Anniston and the like. The question of which is larger, Monroe’s talent or her celebrity, is in play throughout My Week With Marilyn, an adaptation of Colin Clark’s memoir The Prince, the Showgirl and Me. (Clark was a production hand on the set of her 1957 film, The Prince and the Showgirl.)...

Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn (2011)
Call-In Commentary: Watch the "My Week with Marilyn" trailer with director Simon Curtis
Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn (2011)
If you're still upset that Michelle Williams' Oscar nominations for "Brokeback Mountain" and "Blue Valentine" didn't translate into gold statues, you may be finding solace with her performance in "My Week with Marilyn." In portraying 1950's bombshell Marilyn Monroe, the actress has found herself at the center of Academy Awards talk yet again.

The film centers around Monroe's first and only trip to England while shooting "The Prince and the Showgirl," and her unexpected week-long whirlwind romance with a young assistant director named Colin Clark (played by Eddie Redmayne), from whose memoirs the movie is based. With a cast that includes Emma Watson (in her first post-"Potter" role), Kenneth Branagh, Toby Jones, Dominic Cooper and Judi Dench, "My Week with Marilyn" is generating considerable buzz as an intriguing look at celebrity culture in an age before TMZ.

To get a firsthand account of the movie, we turned to...

Shame (2011)
Actor Michael Fassbender, probably best known to U.S. audiences for his role as a young Magneto in "X-Men: First Class," has turned in two searing performances in the last month; first as the famed psychoanalyst Carl Jung in "A Dangerous Method," and now as Brandon, a man dealing with sex addiction in the dark character study, "Shame."

Fassbender sat down with "ExtraTV.com's" Kit Bowen to talk about the similar themes of sex in both movies.

‘My Week with Marilyn’ interview with director Simon Curtis
Working with Marilyn Monroe must have been quite a special experience for third assistant director Colin Clark, whose brief time with the star has turned into two memoirs, and now a film, titled My Week with Marilyn. Similarly, the experience of working with Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams portraying Monroe must have been something magical for first-time director Simon Curtis.

I sat down with Curtis in a roundtable interview to discuss working with Williams on her inevitably Oscar-nominated performance, his feelings about Monroe, and what film set he wishes he could witness just as Colin Clark did back in 1956.

My Week with Marilyn is now playing in select theaters.

What fascinates you most about the movie star and production system of the 1950s, and which you wanted to communicate that in the film?

My way into this film was reading Colin Clark’s diaries, and Clark seeing the details as to...
