It's been a while since Mark Wahlberg delivered a solo blockbuster. His last film was Flight Risk, which debuted theatrically earlier this year. Directed by Mel Gibson, who's having his own troubles, the film made less than $50 million worldwide against a reported budget of $25 million. Most of Wahlberg's post-pandemic releases — at least the ones that secured theatrical runs — have hovered in this range. However, Wahlberg also appeared in a prominent supporting role in the video game adaptation Uncharted. Released in 2022, the action-adventure film has now found a new streaming home.

The Christopher Nolan of 2006 was not the Christopher Nolan of today. Though he had cut his teeth as a tentpole director on "Batman Begins" a year earlier, Nolan hadn't gone into that movie with the intent of launching a trilogy. Nor, for that matter, had he shown any inkling of becoming a big-budget tradesman exclusively. Even on "Batman Begins," Nolan hadn't entirely brushed off the mindset of an artist painting on a smaller canvas and used basic camera setups for much of the action.
This didn't radically change with his follow-up, "The Prestige," but the movie was still a crucial stepping stone to his love affair with IMAX and the more dynamic filming style he embraced in the years that followed. The 2006 period piece tells a small-scale tale of two rival magicians in a way that makes it feel like an epic, in no small part thanks to director of photography Wally Pfister.

One of Bradley Cooper's most beloved movies is heading to a new streaming home.
2011's Limitlessis officially set to join the Paramount+ streaming library. The fan-favorite thriller will be available to stream on Paramount+ beginning July 1, although fans will have to search elsewhere to stream the film's follow-up series of the same name.
Directed by Neil Burger from a screenplay by Leslie Dixon, which itself was based on Alan Glynn's 2011 novel titled The Dark Fields, Limitless starred Bradley Cooper as Eddie Morra, a struggling author whose life in New York City is upset by a series of personal and professional downfalls, including being dumped by his girlfriend, Lindy. When Eddie is given a sample of a new nootropic drug called Nzt-48, Eddie discovers that it gives him access to perfect recall, enhanced intelligence, and a generally supercharged state of mind. Ever since Ransom E. Olds founded Oldsmobile in 1901, Americans have been wild about cars. With roads stretching every which way throughout the United States, cars gradually became the country's preferred mode of transportation -- especially after the development of the freeway system. The automotive industry in the U.S., born and centered in Detroit, has also long been a symbol of roll-up-your-sleeve American ingenuity. We dream big, work hard, and produce reliable automobiles. And Fords.
The country's romance with cars is amply reflected in film and television. Back in the 20th century, Hollywood knocked out big-ticket auto racing films like John Frankenheimer's "Grand Prix," Lee H. Katzin's "Le Mans," and no less than three Elvis Presley movies centered on motorsports. Filmmakers also introduced the car chase as an obligatory set piece in action movies, which was quickly adopted by television producers for slam-bang series like "The Dukes of Hazzard,...

There are times in Amazon’s Motorheads, especially during the Neil Burger-directed premiere, when it feels like you’re not really supposed to have been paying attention. Or, at least, when it feels like the show presumes you haven’t been.
Character introductions and plot developments are prefaced by blaring musical cues to let you know in no uncertain terms how to feel. The dialogue is bloated with exposition: “I mean, your dad just lost her,” a girl says to her boyfriend of his own recently dead mother, as if he might have forgotten. And in case none of that might be enough to redirect your attention from whatever TikTok video you were watching simultaneously, the soundtrack is crammed with recently huge, surely expensive hits by the likes of Benson Boone, Teddy Swims and Olivia Rodrigo.
Arguably, such nudges might be useful, even necessary, given it’s likely some...

Plot: Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your first car. Set in a once-thriving rust-belt town that’s now searching for a glimmer of hope, the series is an adrenaline-filled story of a group of outsiders who form an unlikely friendship over a mutual love of street racing, while navigating the hierarchy and rules of high school.
Review: I am not a car guy, but I am a sucker for movies and series that feature racing. I am also a sucker for kids banding together and forging a team to push back against bullies and bad guys. Whether it be The Goonies, It, or even the Harry Potter films, when a series or film can deliver a teen-centric drama without pandering to the soapier tendencies of young adult fare, it can make for a very entertaining watch. The predominant discourse around Neil Burger’s The Illusionist (2006) seems to largely center around its similarities (or dissimilarities) with the much-acclaimed “The Prestige,” released in the same year. Based on a 1989 short story written by Steven Milhauser, “The Illusionist” brings together such names as Edward Norton, Jessica Biel, and Paul Giamatti to present the story of an illusionist uncovering Victorian society and its ills. It has been noted by academics and critics alike how cinematic representation of the emergence of Victorian-era stage magic is the metaphorical bearer of the simultaneous magic in making: the magical world of the cinema. “The Illusionist” makes for a perfect case in point to trace the trajectory.
In this article, an attempt has been made to decode the ending of The Illusionist (2006) and provide a detailed analysis of some of the overarching thematic concerns of the film.

Maya’s mother had recently passed away, and she had been her primary caregiver for the last nine months. Her elder sister, Jess, fondly remembered her mother, Laura, who always found joy in helping others. She was a nurse and a great believer in Buddhist teachings, and always told her loved ones that happiness was meant to be shared. Jess believed her sister had come close to Laura’s ideals by tirelessly catering to Laura’s needs. Maya struggled to deal with her emotions; she wanted to numb herself and did not know how to express her feelings in words. There are many ways to make a movie. We’ve seen the large studio approach, with massive sets and large groups of paid extras and we’ve seen the indie approach which includes much less resources and limited scale. There are all sorts of approaches in between, and its exciting to see what creativity certain limitations can spur on. Neil Burger opted to shoot his film Inheritance with a very guerilla filmmaking mindset, utilizing iPhones as his cameras and shooting in the midst of everyday civilians. That meant stealing shots (including star Phoebe Dynevor stealing for real on camera) and decidedly personal style. The camera is practically another character. It’s a gimmick that doesn’t entire work for the duration of the film (check out my review Here) but its certainly commendable. It was exciting to be able to pick the brains of star Rhys Ifans and director Neil...

Plot: When Maya learns her father Sam was once a spy, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an international conspiracy.
Review: Neil Burger has had an interesting career to this point but it’s been fairly hit or miss. From Divergent to Limitless to The Illusionist, he’s rather diverse. So it’s intriguing to see his latest outing be a more personal spy story. Inheritance follows Maya shortly after the death of her mother, with her father coming back into the picture and asking her to help him with a task. Little does Maya know that her father is actually a spy and she finds herself dealing with terrorist organizations and Interpol in her pursuit of the truth. Is her father who he says he is or is he using her for some kind of advantage? Phoebe Dynevor is in nearly every single scene of the film...

Writer-Director Neil Burger boasts quite a diverse catalog of films, ranging from sci-fi action flicks like Divergent and Limitless to the romantic mystery period film The Illusionist and the psychological crime thriller adaptation The Marsh King's Daughter. His latest, Inheritance, now takes him into the world of spy thrillers, following a woman who discovers her father's past in espionage, unknowingly thrusting her into the heart of an international conspiracy. There's no predicting what he has planned next given his range, but, fortunately, there's no need to do any guessing because he already has a few plans in motion. In an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub for Inheritance, he opened up about two ideas that are next on the docket, including a biopic that he was able to pull back the curtain on ever so slightly.

In Inheritance, when Maya (Phoebe Dynevor) learns that her father (Rhys Ifans) was once a spy, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an international conspiracy. In her quest for answers, Maya becomes a target and must travel the globe, mastering her father’s skills and unraveling the mysteries of his past in this gripping espionage thriller.
What makes this movie - helmed by Limitless director Neil Burger - particularly unique is the fact it was essentially produced undercover. Filmed using an iPhone, Inheritance was shot without the people surrounding Dynevor and Ifans knowing what was happening...or that they were extras!
As you can probably imagine, that presented Burger with a lot of very unique challenges as a filmmaker. Earlier this month, we sat down with him to learn more about how he approached shooting this edge-of-your-seat thriller.

Right from the opening of Neil Burger’s Inheritance (2025), a generic quality clouds the circumstances. In the wake of loss, a young woman, who had been previously constrained by duty, flings herself through a bout of reckless disrepair. She goes through the beats of a wasted party girl, hooking up and hurling a stab at private happiness, a thing she has not experienced in a while.
Maya (Phoebe Dynevor) can barely cope in the shadow of her mother’s passing. Quickly we learn that she used to be the primary caretaker of her mother in her final few months. She wholly subsumed herself in the responsibility. Can she exceed this, and become someone with her individual personhood and affiliations in place? The film unfolds as a journey of finding her identity that has so long been buried under responsibilities and burdens. Looking after her mother scraped out every bit of...

When reviewing a film, reading the director’s statement can feel an awful lot like checking their will. What an artist intended with the choices they left behind won’t always matter to the audience, but Neil Burger’s “Inheritance” is worth researching before you buy the ticket. Knowing how this strangely pedestrian thriller got produced not only makes it far more enjoyable to watch but highlights a new storytelling approach that might work better on the second try.
Captured on location in Egypt, India, South Korea, and New York City, IFC Films’ latest experiment in suspense — a father-daughter espionage adventure starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans — uses a naturalistic shooting style that spurred some great behind-the-scenes stories. Known for films like “Limitless” and “Divergent,” Burger aimed to make another slippery psychological drama with mainstream action appeal, but this time, he tried to give it some added oomph by boosting the authenticity.

Rhys Ifans is no stranger to colossal action, playing key (often villainous) characters in The Amazing Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Venom, and, of course, HBO’s House of the Dragon. Rhys Ifans is also no stranger to intrigue, starring in Netflix’s Berlin Station and playing Mycroft Holmes on Elementary. Now, he leads the globetrotting spy-action feature Inheritance from director Neil Burger (Divergent).

'Inheritance' Review: Phoebe Dynevor Is a Sardonic Spy Kid in Not-So-Thrilling, iPhone-Shot Thriller
Pulling off a good spy thriller is no easy feat. You’ve got to have strong intrigue, pulse-pounding action, and oftentimes a slick, slightly dangerous protagonist to root for as they try to save the world from destruction. Alas, sometimes a film lacks all three, such as with writer-director Neil Burger’s latest endeavor, Inheritance. This sleepy spy movie stars Phoebe Dynevor as a young woman thrown into the dangerous world of espionage when her estranged father and former spy (Rhys Ifans) comes back into her life. Boasting none of the genre’s expected excitement, Inheritance offers a slow-moving story rife with family secrets and Apple product placement that, while impressively shot entirely with an iPhone, will likely leave you reaching for yours in search of some better entertainment.

Some binge-worthy TV shows center on a group of people and their shared love — of each other (Friends), themselves (Seinfeld), politics (Veep), television (30 Rock), technology (Silicon Valley), science (The Big Bang Theory), and more. This year, a new series will center on an ensemble of dudes who bond over a mutual adoration for automobiles. Sound familiar? Maybe you could be part of the clique yourself. Whether you're a real-life car fiend or simply in the mood for a new series with its own fresh angle, Motorheads is coming to Prime Video, with an exciting cast led by Ryan Phillippe, alongside Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino, Melissa Collazo, and more.
MovieWeb recently caught up with the director of the pilot and second episode, acclaimed filmmaker Neil Burger, while he was promoting his new film, Inheritance. Burger took time to plug Motorheads and what we can expect. "It's kind of a lovely show,...

When drama is brewing before your very eyes, what might be the first thing you grab? The shoulder of the person next to you, in fear? Or maybe that iPhone of yours, resting in your pocket or handbag, to capture what's ensuing for the sake of documenting this crazed public scenario. But be careful — you don't want to get caught filming by the wrong person, or there could be dire consequences. There's something edgy about filming covertly when you're not really supposed to, and this adrenaline rush is what fuels the new IFC Films release Inheritance, from co-writer and director Neil Burger.
Starring Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) like you've never seen her before, Inheritance is thus shot entirely on iPhones, and don't let that stir you the wrong way. This sprawling, international spy film keeps you gripped from start to finish, and MovieWeb recently caught up with director Neil Burger to find out more.

A young woman, Maya (Phoebe Dynevor), struggles with grief after her mother’s death and encounters her long-absent father, Sam (Rhys Ifans), at the funeral. Their meeting carries complex emotions—his desire to reconcile; hers, to understand the absent parent who shaped her life. The story quickly moves beyond a simple family drama, developing into an international thriller that balances intense action with deep emotional exploration.
Maya, feeling lost, reluctantly accepts Sam’s invitation to join a business trip. As Maya investigates her father’s carefully constructed image, the narrative becomes intricate—reminiscent of classic spy stories where identities shift like shadows. Viewers travel through Cairo, New Delhi, and Seoul, locations that mirror Maya’s internal confusion and showcase the film’s raw cinematographic approach.

If it weren’t for the empty adjustable hospital bed in the room, it would seem like Maya’s (Phoebe Dynevor) story is a lot like any other film about 20-somethings living in New York City: she steps out into the night, nicks a bottle of booze from a liquor store and proceeds to take hearty swigs of her purloined goods in public; she dances in a club with the abandon of someone avoiding life’s sobering troubles; she accepts the advances of a stranger. The two end up in bed together, and then, moments later, the stranger is gone. For a brief moment, we’re in the throes of a young woman’s existential journey set in The City That Never Sleeps. This isn’t that type of movie, however; it’s actually an international spy thriller directed by Neil Burger.

Regardless of the ultimate reception and box office performance, Inheritance is assured to be one of the more unique movies of the year. But that’s because of how it was made: the movie was shot entirely on an iPhone. And not just that, it was filmed guerilla-style, meaning much of the movie was shot without explicit filming permissions. The cast and (very small) crew would arrive on location, go over what they needed, and go. But for some, a lot of that will amount to nothing more than some fun behind-the-scenes trivia. What’s the end result for Inheritance as a whole?

Shot guerilla-style in various urban locations with an iPhone and a small crew, Inheritance represents something of a return to director Neil Burger’s more experimental beginnings, particularly the faux-documentary approach of his feature debut Interview with the Assassin. Unfortunately, this would-be gritty espionage thriller has no more originality, depth, or thematic complexity than Burger’s biggest commercial success, the facile YA sci-fi adaptation Divergent, and it’s left oddly stranded between two opposing, mutually destructive sensibilities.
The film is centered on Maya (Phoebe Dynevor), a young woman whose sense of disaffection is partly mirrored by the vérité camera that tracks her impatiently throughout. After a brief opening sequence in which she engages in a number of “risky” activities—shoplifting a bottle of vodka, engaging in a dispassionate one-night stand, smoking a cig with her legs dangling out the window of her high-rise NYC apartment—Maya’s unconvincing emotional turmoil...

Neil Burger’s shot-on-an-iPhone globe-trotting thriller Inheritance begins on a New York City street. Guerrilla-style close-ups frame the face of despondent twenty-something Maya Welch (Phoebe Dynevor). Edm blares on the soundtrack. In description, “Inheritance” sounds like one of those movies that’s about the gimmickry of its own making: A spy thriller shot entirely on iPhone, with many scenes staged in public without permits for added urgency and spontaneity. But this latest feature from Neil Burger, who co-wrote the script with spy novelist Olen Steinhauer, ultimately transcends mere novelty by having an even smaller-scale gist than you’d expect. For all its multinational sprawl and intimations of high peril, the film is ultimately a two-person drama about a daughter (Phoebe Dynevor) finding out who her long-absent father (Rhys Ifans) really is. What she learns is bitter, but also dramatically satisfying enough to make this release, hitting theaters from IFC Films on Friday, feel like something more than just one more low-budget action movie with familiar faces.

After shooting a pair of feature films strictly on iPhones, the iconic Steven Soderbergh once stated at Sundance that he sees no reason why the rest of his movies shouldn’t be captured as such. Even if that hasn’t been the case, it was certain to inspire budding filmmakers out there — and maybe even fellow acclaimed directors still churning out hit projects to this day. Cinephiles might also remember that Sean Baker (Anora) shot his indie hit Tangerine on iPhones as well. And now, years later, Soderbergh’s pal Neil Burger has a new iPhone-shot film hitting theaters this week with Inheritance.

Phoebe Dynevor's latest film, Inheritance, was shot entirely on an iPhone, a rather rare feat in the industry.
The movie follows Dynevor's Maya, a lost soul thrust into a dangerous journey after learning that her father is a spy. Now a target, she’s forced to unravel new mysteries as she becomes tangled in a wide-reaching conspiracy.
Usually, feature film productions opt for incredibly sophisticated and expensive camera rigs to bring their stories to life. However, for Inheritance, director Neil Burger felt like the iPhone was the perfect choice for them.

Before the Uncharted movie would finally be released in theaters in 2022, there were plenty of production troubles and several changes in directors. One such director attached to the project at one point was Seth Gordon, who just had his latest movie, Back in Action, released on Netflix this past weekend. While it was Ruben Fleischer who ultimately ended up directing the project, Gordon's role in the film's pre-production was essential to the final version.
In an exclusive interview with Collider, Gordon divulged details about how his work on the film would overlap with Fleischer's film production, before the Sony email leaks eventually led to him exiting the adaptation. Specifically, it was a member of the director's crew for his 2025 Netflix film that also ended up working on Uncharted in 2021. Here is what Gordon had to say specifically about how much of his vision ended up in the final product:

The chances of a Divergent reboot are being addressed by original director Neil Burger, 10 years after the dystopian sci-fi franchise launched. An adaptation of the popular Veronica Roth novels, the film series explores a future Chicago where citizens are separated into factions, based on a primary virtue, and centers on Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley), a Divergent who uncovers alarming secrets about her society. Despite an underwhelming response from audiences, Divergent was a commercial success in 2014, and two sequels, directed by Robert Schwentke, were eventually released. However, plans to conclude the franchise beyond that were seemingly discarded.
Now, more than a decade after helming the first installment, Burger spoke with Screen Rant about whether Divergent can be rebooted. Although he had not considered it, the director explained that Lionsgate may look to remake the series at some point. Burger then expressed his appreciation for the movie and getting to work with...
