Steven Knight certainly knows his way around a captivating historical drama. Hot on the heels of Sas: Rogue Heroes and almost three years since Peaky Blinders ended on the small screen, the Brummie writer is back with another excellent British series, once again based on fascinating real-life characters and settings. But while the big draw is undoubtedly Boiling Point and This Is England icon Stephen Graham’s transformation into a bulky bare-knuckle boxer, Knight also lays the foundations for an engaging larger ensemble.

Elements that are synonymous with Knight’s previous shows are here in abundance. There are plenty of gripping developments amongst the numerous schemes and deadly rivalries, along with a Peaky Blinders-esque family pub. Strong social and political commentary is also woven throughout, with a marked divide between the East End’s struggling working class and the aristocracy of the West End.

Steven Knight’s A Thousand Blows often calls to mind HBO’s Warrior. They both take place in an inner-city slum at the end of the 19th century, though here its Victorian London rather than San Francisco. And both follow a newly arrived immigrant, in this case Jamaican boxer Hezekiah (Malachi Kirby), as he contends with discrimination, inequality, and criminality in his new home, often resulting in hand-to-hand combat. But while they may share a similar style, a combination of lackluster fight scenes and thin characterization ensures that A Thousand Blows never quite makes it into Warrior’s weight class.

Upon arriving in London, Hezekiah quickly finds himself drawn into the world of underground boxing, a sinister realm presided over by brothers Treacle Goodson (James Nelson Joyce) and Sugar (Stephen Graham). In October 2022, it was reported that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were co-writing a new Star Wars movie, tentatively dubbed ‘New Jedi Order’ with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as the director. The film was supposed to take place after the sequel trilogy, possibly featuring characters from those films.

However, by March 2023, Lindelof and Britt-Gibson left, and Steven Knight replaced them as the screenwriter. Daisy Ridley was confirmed to return as Rey in April 2023, but by October 2024, Steven Knight also left, and George Nolfi was hired to write the screenplay, with filming now expected to start in late 2025.

The movie has seen numerous delays and problems with writers and quite frankly we have no idea in what state the movie currently is.

The English actor is coming off two years’ worth of acclaimed work in a number of different genres, including the biographical sports drama Young Woman and the Sea, the offbeat romantic dramedy Sometimes I Think About Dying and her self-generated neo-noir Magpie. But when the opportunity presented itself to work with the filmmaker behind two beloved James Bond films, Casino Royale and GoldenEye, Ridley knew it was time to return to the type of physical acting that made her a household name via the Star Wars sequel trilogy. (Campbell and Ridley hit it off so well that they’re already in development on another action-thriller called Dedication.)

Opening in theaters on Feb. 21, Ridley plays Joey Locke, a former soldier who’s now a high-rise window cleaner for a London building that’s home to a prominent energy company.

While Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu” will be the next “Star Wars” adventure to hit the big screen next year, there is still work being done to get “Star Wars: New Jedi Order” starring Daisy Ridley (reprising her role as Rey Skywalker) in good enough shape for filming to begin. Writer-director George Nolfi talks exclusively to us about his screenwriting work on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s upcoming Star Wars movie.

Asking a filmmaker about their forthcoming Marvel or Star Wars project is generally a fool’s errand. Not least because they’ve signed so many non-disclosure agreements that they essentially can’t say anything.

All the same, when we spoke to director George Nolfi last week about his latest film Elevation – due for release on Prime Video UK on the 8th February – we could hardly avoid the (metaphorical) elephant in the room. Only a couple of days earlier, Hollywood trade outlets had reported that Nolfi had been hired as the screenwriter on one of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars projects.

If you’re unfamiliar, this is the sequel announced about two years ago, designed to bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey, and with documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy making her narrative feature debut.

The news broke late last year that Lucasfilm is developing a new Star Wars trilogy, with Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix) tapped to write and produce all three films.

A follow-up rumor claimed that Henry Cavill has met with Lucasfilm about a potential role, and another reliable insider has since backed this up. We don't know which character the actor is said to be in talks for, but Mttsh (via SFFGazette.com) is now reporting that it is a villainous role.

Amid rumors that the project may have stalled (or possibly been shelved altogether), we now have confirmation that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Rey-focused Star Wars movie is officially moving forward with a new writer on board to pen the script.

THR reports that George Nolfi, known for his work on movies such as The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean’s 12, has been enlisted to write the movie, which is being referred to as "New Jedi Order" (whether this title will stick remains to be seen).

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the writer and director has been brought on to write the film, which will see the return of Daisy Ridley in the role of Rey Skywalker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still on as the director, making her jump from documentaries to narrative features.

I'm going to say this again for the people in the back: It's perfectly normal for movies in pre-production to sometimes go through different writers. At one point or another, Damon Lindelof, Justin Britt-Gibson, and Steven Knight were writers on the New Jedi Order. There could be a number of reasons for pre-production teams to move on from a project. The reason why these make headlines is because Star Wars is such a massive thing.

The Star Wars movie centered on Daisy Ridley’s Rey has found another new writer. THR reports that George Nolfi, best known for The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean’s Twelve, will take over the script for the new Star Wars movie.

The project, which is set to be helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), was originally thought to be one of the first new Star Wars films to be released, but it’s been plagued with setbacks. It was first announced at Star Wars Celebration close to two years ago, with Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain) writing the script. The pair left or were “asked to leave,” as Lindelof put it, and Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) stepped in to take over. However, Knight dropped out last October. Here’s hoping Nolfi has better luck.

“The Bourne Ultimatum” writer George Nolfi will write Daisy Ridley’s “Star Wars” project titled “New Jedi Order” for Lucasfilm, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.

Ridley is attached to star. Nolfi is the latest writer to come aboard the project as Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, along with “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, wrote previous drafts of the script, which takes place 15 years after the events seen in 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker” with Ridley’s Rey Skywalker now a mentor to a new crop of Jedis.

Lucasfilm announced this new addition to the franchise at its Star Wars Celebration in April of 2023. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, two-time Academy Award-winning documentarian, is attached to direct.

Other “Star Wars” projects in development include a feature helmed by “Deadpool & Wolverine” filmmaker Shawn Levy and a “Dawn of the Jedi” feature, set thousands of years in the past, to be directed by James Mangold.

Despite the fast-tracking of Shawn Levy’s standalone Star Wars movie with Ryan Gosling in talks, Daisy Ridley's Rise of Skywalker sequel is getting another pass, this time by writer George Nolfi.

Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still attached to direct the story about Rey Skywalker, 15 years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The plot is rumored that Rey, the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, will oversee a school of Jedis.

Previous scribes on the Rey story included Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. In April 2023 Peaky Blinder creator Steven Knight was also making a go at it, but stepped away last October.

Ridley told Deadline at SXSW last year that “I know bits and bobs” about the sequel. “I know there’s an introduction of new characters,” the actress said, “I don’t know about previous characters” — and that includes her twin flame Kylo Ren.

In addition, movies like Lando starring Donald Glover, and ‘Rogue Squadron’ directed by Patty Jenkins are also planned, though their status remains uncertain. There is also an untitled film by Shawn Levy, but little is known about its current development.

In November 2022, it was reported that Shawn Levy was in talks to direct a Star Wars film after his work on ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Stranger Things.’ However, in September 2023, Levy revealed that while development on the project had begun, it was delayed due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.

The latest trailer for Hulu’s A Thousand Blows boxing drama has The Crown star Erin Doherty as Mary Carr trading barbs outside the ring with feared bare knuckle pugilist Sugar Goodson, played by Peaky Blinders star Stephen Graham, to grow her criminal empire.

“Watch me kill him,” a menacing Goodson, the self-declared emperor of London’s East End boxing world, tells Carr, who introduces herself as Queen of an all-female criminal gang known as the Forty Elephants. “Can’t happen,” she defiantly replies, as Carr looks to exploit the talents of Kirby, a Jamaican boxer played by Hezekiah Moscow, who challenges Goodson for survival, and dominance, in the illegal boxing ring.
