Tom Hanks, 68, Says This Movie Heading to Free Streaming is His "Most Underrated"
Image
When you're the guy who’s convincingly played both Walt Disney and Fred Rogers, the idea of seeing you as a cold-blooded mob enforcer doesn’t exactly compute. But Tom Hanks has made a career out of challenging expectations — and one of his boldest, most quietly devastating swings is finally heading to free streaming. Road to Perdition, the underrated gangster drama that gave Hanks one of his most haunting roles, is coming to Pluto TV on July 1.

Released in 2002 and directed by Sam Mendes, Road to Perdition gave the Oscar-winning actor a rare chance to tap into his darker side — and audiences didn’t quite know what to make of it. Despite critical acclaim and six Oscar nominations, including a posthumous nod for Paul Newman, the film somehow drifted out of mainstream conversation. But not for Hanks. He’s often referred to Road to Perdition as his most underrated performance,...

Road To Perdition: Analyzing Tom Hanks’ Dark Turn In The Crime Drama
Image
Revisiting Tom Hanks’ Dark Role In Road To Perdition(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Tom Hanks has established a reputation for portraying likable, decent men who strive to act morally. He’s the type of actor who, just by being on screen, adds a certain warmth to films like Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump. However, Hanks abruptly departed from his typical roles in 2002. He ventured into far darker territory in Road to Perdition, and it was one of his most subtly impactful performances to date.

What Is Tom Hanks’ Road To Perdition About?

Road to Perdition, directed by Sam Mendes and based on the graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner, takes place in the grim midst of the Great Depression. The film centers around Michael Sullivan, an Illinois hitman raised and employed by the Irish mobster John Rooney.

Sullivan’s family is devastated when his oldest son,...

Image
Actress Lindsay Lohan’s father, Michael Lohan, was arrested and charged with domestic violence in Texas on Feb. 21, after he allegedly flipped his estranged wife Kate Major out of a chair. He was held on bail for $30,000, charged with Continuous Family Violence.

Damon Wayans Brought Much-Needed Chaotic Energy to Sitcoms with My Wife and Kids
Image
You’d be excused if you didn’t notice that Netflix recently added the forgotten sitcom My Wife and Kids to its servers. With the labor stoppages over and TV back up and running once again, streaming services are pushing full steam ahead to get regularly scheduled programming back on the market. It doesn’t seem like there would be any room for a show more known for its Nick at Nite run than its original broadcast on ABC, but anyone who ignores the Damon Wayans-centered sitcom is missing out on one of the funniest, most chaotic comedies of the 2000s.

At first glance, My Wife and Kids looks like your typical comedian vehicle from around this time period. So many stand-up comics got their own network sitcom that the genre turned into TV junk food during the late 20th century. Everybody Loves Raymond, Home Improvement, The King of Queens,...

The Best Gangster and Mob Movies Ranked
Image
Gangsters, mobsters, thugs, and mugs. Organized crime holds the upper tier of the international cinematic commission. “Crime pays,” Edward G. Robinson, who played Rico Bandello in the seminal gangster film Little Caesar (1931), is famous for saying. “But only in the movies.” When a good mob movie is on the table, it is an offer no filmmaker can refuse. There is more intrigue, suspense, violence, mayhem, and madness to be found in the criminal element than any other genre.

“Gone are the days of the gangsters,” audiences heard for years, usually in movies about mobsters. They always rise up, even if they are splattered across the ornate fountains of their gangland mansions in the last frame, like Al Pacino’s Tony Montana in Brian DePalma’s Scarface (1983), or rolling down the steps of a church, dead from a hail of bullets. That’s how James Cagney’s Eddie Bartlett went out in The Roaring Twenties (1939). Now,...

The Best TV Shows And Movies Leaving Netflix In April 2023

Nothing lasts forever, except maybe impermanence itself. Then again, if impermanence lasts forever, then it's not really impermanence. It's that kind of brain teaser that exhausts our noggins so much that we just want to sit back, konk out, and watch something on streaming. But just when you thought you were free from the stress of pondering the nature of impermanence, it turns out that some of the movies and TV shows you loved are suddenly not on Netflix anymore.

The good news is, you can avoid these kinds of catastrophes by preparing yourself accordingly. Instead of being taken off guard because your favorite sitcom or horror movie aren't available anymore, you can read article like this one — yes, the one you're reading right now! — and find out which films and series are leaving Netflix, so you can watch them now while you have the chance.

Tom Hanks Is Right: You Should Be Talking About Road to Perdition
Image
While recently talking about the movies which would make up his retrospective, Tom Hanks, the star of Big, Splash, Philadelphia, and Saving Private Ryan, told CinemaBlend’s ReelBlend Podcast: “For one reason or another, no one references Road to Perdition.” It’s a curiosity he can’t really explain, but he makes a strong argument for the 2002 film, emphasizing how it features “two guys who turned out to be two of the biggest motion picture presences in the history of the industry with Jude Law and [Daniel] Craig.”

Hanks is only saying what mob movie aficionados have been whispering because of omerta laws for years. Road to Perdition is a gangster film classic even if it is based on a graphic novel.

Cinema legend Paul Newman was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in his final feature film performance, here as crime family boss John Rooney. It was also director...

‘Selfie Dad’: Film Review
Image
Writer-director Brad J. Silverman’s “Selfie Dad” is a pleasantly predictable faith-based dramedy that has been scheduled and marketed for family viewing over Father’s Day weekend on VOD platforms. As it turns out, however, the timing of its release might actually serve to expand the film’s appeal slightly beyond the usual target audience for similar fare. Indeed, in the context of recent real-life events and Black Lives Matter protests, certain elements of Silverman’s narrative give his film, if only inadvertently, a slightly sharper edge than even he likely intended.

Christian standup comic Michael Jr. plays, credibly and creditably, Ben Marcus, an editor at an Los Angeles production house who, several years earlier, walked away from a promising career as a comedian. The movie begins with a snippet from one of his decades-earlier routines, in which Ben, a Black man, recalls how easily he rattled an older white...

Prison Break: Michael's Plan Revealed
It all comes down to this, the Season Finale of Prison Break! How will Michael defeat Poseidon? Will all of the team members survive?  Will it in on a cliffhanger opening the door for a possible Season 6?  Read on to find out:

Poseidon's Plans -- Poseidon wanted people out of prison for the good of the country, but he wanted Abu Ramal, not for freedom, but to kill Michael.  It was all a set up in order to kill Scofield in order to have Sara and Michael Jr. for himself.  He also need to set-up Michael for the death of the CIA Operative, Harlan Gaines, because he had been looking into Jacob's shady dealings. Jacob continues his manipulation of Michael Jr. by telling him that Sara is dead, and that his real father is dead.

21 Void -- Just like The Company, no one can get out of 21 Void.

Michael Recruited Whip -- In a flashback from six years prior, viewers find out that Jacob used to be a professor who planned on breaking people out of prison in order to change the world. He stated the the system is slow, much like the reason Michael broke Linc out of prison. Michael told Jacob that he needed assistance on the missions, and told Jacob he wanted Whip to help him.  We then found out that Whip had been in prison, and did not have a family, so Micahel said that he would be easy to manipulate.  Michael's plans were obviously deeper than that. Michael had T-Bag confront Whip because...Whip is his long-lost son!

Prison Break: Poseidon's Identity Revealed!
Prison Break returns with an all new episode.  Now that Michael and the team are close to escaping Yemen, will the focus now turn to their battle against Poseidon?  Will we learn more than we did last week? (Which wasn't much...)  Read on to find out this week's takeaways:

Michael's Yemen Team is Dwindling -- Michael began with a core group who he was trying to break out of prison.  Abu Ramal is dead, Sid was killed and Ja has left.  Was there a purpose in Michael trying to free them, did he need them to get out, or did his usual empathetic nature drive him to break them out because he truly cares for others?  I think the only people he originally wanted out of Ogygia was Abu Ramal (because of Poseidon), and Whip (since they seem to have a back-history and know about Poseidon).

Warning: Spoiler alert! Do not proceed if you haven’t watched Tuesday’s episode of Prison Break.

Prison Break staged a heartfelt reunion -- and it was well worth the wait.

On Tuesday’s episode, titled “Wine Dark Sea,” a dying Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) -- his body poisoned with antifreeze -- was cured by the only doctor capable of doing so, his true love, Sara Tancredi-Scofield (Sarah Wayne Callies), who flew from Ithaca, New York, to Greece to help save him. Placing their anticipated reunion in the seventh episode of the season, under life-and-death circumstances no less, was the first step in giving Michael and Sara the happy ending that they (and the fans) have sought.

Michael Scofield has a message for his former love.

On Tuesday’s episode of Prison Break, Michael (Wentworth Miller) secretly sends a note to ex-wife Sara Tancredi-Scofield (Sarah Wayne Callies), but in an unconventional way.

In Et’s exclusive clip, Sara -- now married to Jacob Ness (Mark Feuerstein) -- arrives at Michael Jr.’s school to pick up him, only he’s not there. Fearing the worst, Sara frantically searches for the son she shares with Michael, running through the playground for any sign of him.

Luckily, Michael Jr. is safe and sound. “What are you doing? You scared me,” Sara says, breathing a sigh of relief once she spots her son, who was behind the jungle gym looking for a mysterious man.

“I was looking for the man who gave me this,” Michael Jr. innocently explains, showing his mother...

A version of this article originally appeared on EW.com.

August 2005 was a much simpler time: The first iPhone was still two years away from being released, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo was in theaters, and Prison Break debuted on Fox. After two prison escapes, an Ocean’s Eleven-style reset, four seasons, and a TV movie, the hit series signed off in 2009.

Now, with Fox reviving many of its greatest hits (please let Fastlane be next), Michael, Lincoln, Sara, T-Bag, Sucre, and C-Note are back. I know what you’re thinking: “Wait, but didn’t Michael die at the end of Prison Break?...

It’s been nearly a decade since Prison Break last graced the small screen, but it’s finally back -- and fans are in for an action-packed treat!

Fox’s prison drama returns Tuesday for a new nine-episode installment, welcoming back series stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell as Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows, respectively. Et was with Miller on the Vancouver set, where he dished on what fans can expect in Prison Break’s latest chapter, which kicks off by addressing the elephant in the room: Michael’s presumed death.

“We find out that Michael is alive, not necessarily well,” Miller told Et last June. “When the story picks up, he is in a prison in Yemen and in a dark place physically and emotionally.”

But the former football star and successful television personality admits that his kids — 12-year-old twin daughters Sophia and Isabella, son Michael Jr., 21, and daughter Tanita, 24 — have given him one of life’s greatest lessons.

“Sometimes life gets serious for us as adults, but looking at my kids, it lets me know that you’re allowed to have fun — you’re allowed to have mindless fun,” Strahan, 44, tells People. “And you’re allowed to be yourself and act like no one is watching.

Charlotte McKinney
A little more than week has passed since a Charlotte, North Carolina, police officer shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott.

The 43-year-old black man's death sparked days of protests, both violent and peaceful in the city, fueling the national debate over police reforms – and Michael Strahan (a father of four kids between the ages of 12 and 24) says the topic is certainly on his mind.

Speaking to People for his cover story earlier this month, the newly minted co-host of Good Morning America, 44, said the "climate seems to be scarier than it ever was."

50 Greatest Comic Book Movie Adaptations
40. Road to Perdition

One of the more surprising and lesser-known facts about Sam Mendes’ second film, Road to Perdition, is that it’s actually adapted from a graphic novel of the same name by Max Allan Collins. The plot follows Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), an Irish mob enforcer as he goes on the run with his son Michael Jr. after Jr. witnesses a murder and their family is killed in an effort to cover up any witnesses. There’s many great things in this film that standout, such as Jude Law’s creepy performance as assassin Harlen Maguire, one of Paul Newman’s final and finest performances as mob boss John Rooney, and Hollywood got an early look at the talent of Daniel Craig as the unstable Connor Rooney. However, it’s the climax that remains the most memorable thing in it, featuring some of the most iconic work from...
