Exclusive: The 29th LA Shorts International Film Festival is about to get underway in downtown Los Angeles, an Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying event that will showcase 470 films between July 16-28.
The festival opens at Regal LA Live with a selection of four shorts including Como si la tierra se las hubiera tragado, directed by Natalia León, an animated short that won the jury award at the Sundance Film Festival.
“In Olivia’s Mexican hometown, femicide and gender-based violence are increasing at an alarming rate,” notes a description of León’s film in the program guide for Hot Docs, where the film also played. “Upon her return after a long absence, she quickly notices the city walls are covered with posters of missing women. The mistreatment of women is pervasive, and the once-vibrant city is gradually losing its vitality.”

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season just hit Bravo airwaves, but the drama surrounding Gary King has been going strong for over a year.
In fact, Gary is likely the reason that Season 5 was pushed from the summer to fall amid accusations of sexual misconduct.
The claims made against Gary came right after Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 was filmed, leaving the powers that be struggling with how to handle the situation.
As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Gary has denied the claims and insisted an investigation proved he did nothing wrong and that his accuser lied.
Neither Bravo nor 51 Minds, the production company behind Below Deck, have addressed the investigation into the claims against the first officer.
Meanwhile, Gary hasn’t done any press for the current season of the sailing show but has been using social media to speak his truth.

Luke and Laura weren't the only ones who got fired on Below DeckKyle's bad behavior also caught up with him. Crew members like Trevor, Raygan, and Peter also faced the consequences of their actions on Below Deck. Some crew members, such as Tom Pearson, Adam Kodra, Chef Anthony Iracane, Hannah Ferrier, and others, deserved a second chance before being let go, but their captains had to set an example.
The Below Deck franchise has seen many crew members get fired, but some may not have deserved it. This Bravo show is known for its drama and unexpected twists, showing both valid and questionable firings. One such example is Bosun Luke Jones from Below Deck Down Under. He made the mistake of getting naked and forcing himself into bed with Margot Sisson, leading Captain Jason Chambers to quickly let him go as a clear example to the rest of the crew.

What happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5? That’s the question on fans’ minds after it was revealed Below Deck Med Season 9 will air following Below Deck Season 11.
Ever since Below Deck Sailing Yacht premiered on Bravo, it has followed the Og show.
Below Deck Med would then hit Bravo airwaves once the sailing show had wrapped it’s run.
That’s the way it’s been for the past four years, except for last year when Below Deck Down Under Season 2 aired after Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
So why all of a sudden is there a switch in the schedule, especially since Below Deck Med Season 8 just ended in January?
Let’s take a look at what we know.

Malia White's decision to snitch on Hannah Ferrier for having unregistered Valium and a vape pen on board created a major scandal on Below Deck Mediterranean season 5. Luke Jones's inappropriate behavior towards Stew Margot Sisson, including hopping into her bed naked without her consent, led to his firing and backlash for sexual misconduct. Peter Hunziker's firing due to a racist post on social media was one of the most talked about scandals on Below Deck Med season 5, alongside Hannah Ferrier's firing.
Through the years, there have been several Below Deck scandals that have taken place, with some being more heinous than others. With five spin-offs and more than 20 seasons in the franchise, Below Deck is bound to have a few scandals in its time. The franchise focuses on the personal and work lives of yachties, and it's not that surprising when something goes wrong on board between the crew members.

Firing crew members is common in the Below Deck franchise, but sometimes it is unwarranted and they deserve a second chance. Elizabeth and Chandler both deserved another chance before being fired, as the reasons for their dismissals were not fair or communicated beforehand. The firing of Tom, Camille, Alissa, and Hannah was unjustified, as they either made minor mistakes or were treated unreasonably by their superiors.
Through the years, there have been many Below Deck crew members who have been fired and deserved a second chance on board. The Below Deck franchise began over a decade ago with Caption Lee Rosbach at the helm. Viewers loved Lee for his no-nonsense attitude but also how he still cared deeply for his crew members and created the best experience for his charter guests. Since the original series has done so well over the years, Bravo decided to make it into a franchise by creating several spin-offs.

Crew members on the Below Deck franchise are frequently fired for bad attitudes, poor work ethic, fighting, and incompetence. Camille Lamb, Kyle Dickard, Raygan Tyler, Magda Ziomek, Ryan McKeown, Tom Pearson, Lexi Wilson, Delaney Evans, Elizabeth Frankini, and Shane Coppersmith are among the crew members who were let go for various reasons. Hannah Ferrier was fired for possession of unregistered drugs, Peter Hunziker for a racist social media post, Mila Kolomeitseva for subpar menu, Chandler Brooks for not being a good fit, Chris Brown for inexperience, and Leon Walker for causing a kitchen fire.
Every series in the Below Deck franchise has fired several crew members over the years, but the reasons aren't always clear. Below Deck follows the work lives of crew members on various types of yachts and all the drama that comes with the demanding industry. The close quarters and particular guests test every crew member and captain's limits.

Lara Du Preez's promotion to lead deckhand on Below Deck Mediterranean is not uncommon, as crew members often get promoted while on board. Being a lead deckhand is typically a role assigned by the bosun to someone they trust and can rely on to lead the other deckhands. Lara's promotion was well-deserved, as she demonstrated initiative, a strong work ethic, and the ability to handle tasks and delegate responsibilities effectively.
Lara Du Preez was promoted to lead deckhand on Monday night's brand-new episode from Below Deck Mediterranean season 8; however, other deckhands like Lara have been promoted as well. After Ruan Irving left his bosun job and Luka Brunton received the new title, Lara and fellow deckhand Haleigh Gorman, immediately stepped up to the plate to help Luka out, especially Lara. Not only did she work well with Haleigh, but she was able to delegate tasks to new deckhand Max Salvador when Luka wasn't around.

Bravolebrity, Captain Sandy Yawn, is engaged!
Last weekend, the “Below Deck Mediterranean” star popped the question to her longtime girlfriend of over five years, Leah Shafer.
“I have been thinking about marrying Leah for years,” Yawn told E! News, confirming the couple’s engagement. “I knew from the minute I met her, but the timing had to be right. I wanted to make sure we could truly do life together first.”
Yawn, who really began thinking about proposing back in April, then shared how the milestone moment came to be.
“Leah wanted the fairytale, and to me, Leah represents elegance. I planned a boat ride to a beautiful cove. I had it decorated with flowers with a path to a small table accompanied by three violinists where we could sit and have a small date,” the super-yacht captain recalled. Photos of the proposal can be seen in E! News’ story.

While Below Deck Mediterranean fans are happy to see Malia White's continued career advancements, they're also taken aback by her recent physical appearance. Malia, who was first introduced to the Below Deck franchise as a deckhand, appeared on Below Deck Med season 2 before she was promoted to bosun ahead of Below Deck Med season 5. As the series' first female bosun, Malia's passion, work ethic, and pushback against rude subordinates like Peter Hunziker were complimented by Below Deck fans until her then-boyfriend, Tom Checketts, joined the crew as their chef.
By the end of that season, Below Deck Mediterranean's Malia White descended from fan favorite to notorious villain after she told Captain Sandy Yawn that chief stew Hannah Ferrier had anxiety medication on board, which Hannah was immediately fired for. Although she returned for Below Deck Med season 6, Malia's reputation never fully recovered, and was replaced by Storm Smith...

Peter Hunziker, a deckhand on the current season of “Below Deck Mediterranean,” has been fired by Bravo and 51 Minds, the company that produces the show, because of a racist and misogynistic post on his Instagram account.
Bravo’s Instagram posted the news of the firing: “Peter Hunziker of ‘Below Deck Mediterranean’ has been terminated for his racist post. Bravo and 51 Minds are editing the show to minimize his appearance on subsequent episodes.”
Hunziker had posted a meme that showed a naked Black woman in chains. A source close to Bravo told Variety that the network learned of the post on Friday, and fired Hunziker immediately.
Hunziker’s firing took place a week after Bravo let go four “Vanderpump Rules” cast members, including original stars Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute, because of racist actions.
On this season of “Below Deck Mediterranean,” which premiered on June 1, Hunziker — self-nicknamed “Party Pete” — has already been accused of sexism.
