Flashback: Kansas’ Robby Steinhardt Wows the Crowd With ‘Dust in the Wind’ Violin Solo
Image
The official video for Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” is typical of many music videos from the late Seventies: There’s an endless amount of hair, a few questionably ruffled tuxedo shirts, and some more hair. In the same way that Journey’s 1978 video for “Lights” humorously featured light literally beaming out of the band members’ extravagant outfits, the Kansas clip uses a fog machine to dramatically represent all that dust in the wind.

But this is a song about living in the moment — so why not check out a...

Robby Steinhardt, Violinist and Co-Lead Vocalist of Kansas, Dead at 71

Robby Steinhardt, violinist and co-lead vocalist of the rock outfit Kansas, died Saturday, July 17th. He was 71.

Steinhardt’s wife, Cindy Steinhardt, confirmed his death on Facebook. Cindy said Steinhardt was admitted to the hospital with acute pancreatitis in May. Not long after, he went into acute septic shock and was placed on life support, and although the outlook was “very grave” at the time, he managed to recover. However, several months later, just as he was about to be released from medical care and moved to a rehab center,...

Drama surrounding the Winchester boys’ mom will be at the center of the upcoming Season 13 for “Supernatural.” The stars and producers of the long-running CW drama gathered for a San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday, which kicked off with the rock band Kansas performing a live version of “Carry on Wayward Son,” the show’s unofficial theme song. Co-showrunner Bob Singer teased the outcome of the Season 12 finale, which left Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith) trapped in a rift with Lucifer. James Corden and The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons were overcome by emotion, frilly costumes and massive hair recreating the dramatic music video for Kansas' "Dust In the Wind" on The Late Late Show Wednesday.

The Supernatural and Smallville crossover we almost saw
Mike Cecchini Dec 8, 2016

An idea for a Supernatural/Smallville crossover wasn't exactly what you might expect.

Supernatural is currently enjoying its 12th season, and there's no end in sight. Smallville, the show that arguably made the CW into the genre show haven it has since become (and perhaps helped make Supernatural possible), took its final bow at the end of its 10th season.

Now imagine, if you will, a crossover between the two shows. It's easy if you try (sorry), especially given how crossover happy the CW is with their current crop of superhero TV shows. And why shouldn't they be? They're absolutely killing it in the ratings. But a Supernatural/Smallville crossover would have come at a time when such exercises weren't necessarily a slam dunk.

Now, keep in mind we're not talking about something as basic as the Winchester boys making a pitstop in Smallville, Kansas and teaming...

How Armistice Day Became Veterans Day, and Who Helped Make That Happen
Sonja Smits in Bury the Lead (2002)
November 11 is Veterans Day, but it hasn’t always been. Our current conception of the day was the work of a few dedicated individuals, many of whom are not known by the general public. So let’s dive into how the holiday came about.

Though the Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended World War I, was signed on June 28, 1919, the Allied nations and Germany actually reached an armistice — or a temporary stop to fighting — on Nov. 11, 1918. (The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, by the way.)

It was President Woodrow Wilson who proclaimed the date Armistice...

Michael Massee, the character actor sadly remembered for his role in the accidental death of Bruce Lee’s son, has died at the age of 61.

While acting in just his second feature film, the cult-classic The Crow, Massee fired a faulty prop revolver at the film’s star, Brandon Lee, the son world-famous actor and martial artist Bruce Lee. Unbeknownst to Massee, the gun fired a live round,...

Lorde Gets Banned In San Francisco Because Of Silliest Reason Possible

Paul Rudd Celebrates with a Kegger at Mom's House after Royals Win: Watch Now!

42 – The Review
The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and it’s time to crack open the windows after so many long months. Ah, springtime, when a young man’s (and many not so young) thoughts turn to … baseball. Well, it turns out that many in Hollywood have the old “horse-hide” on the brain too. This favorite American pastime has graced the big screen many times from light comedies such as Alibi Ike and Major League to heavy dramas like Bang The Drum Slowly. One classic flick, The Natural, could be classified a Fantasy allegory while another, Bull Durham, is a sexy bedroom romp. Of course, film makers have chosen to tell several real-life stories of the diamond with Pride Of The Yankees (Lou Gehrig’s tale), a couple of Babe Ruth biopics, and the lady players of World War II in A League Of Their Own. Now Brian Helgeland (The Order...

'Oz the Great and Powerful' Review: 10 Things You Should Know
This weekend, Disney adds a blockbuster prequel to the magical world of Oz adventure with "Oz the Great and Powerful." Sam Raimi directs James Franco as the titular Oz, exploring how he became a giant, smoke-billowing head. Before he was the man behind the curtain that you were advised to pay no attention to, he was a two-bit carnival magician, conning audiences out of their money, and women out of their hearts. But then a mysterious tornado whisked him away to the Emerald City and into the middle of a battle between Glinda the Good-Witch (played by Michelle Williams) and the Wicked Witches of the East and West (played Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis). The movie has some big ruby slippers to fill (but you won't see them in the film), so how does it play out? Moviefone breaks down the ten things you need to know about "Oz the Great and Powerful.

Interview: Zach Braff monkeys around in Oz
Though "Scrubs" ended its impressive, nearly decade-long run three years ago, its star Zach Braff has only done a TV cameo here and there, and wowed in the little-seen 2010 Canadian drama The High Cost of Living, but his next part in Oz: The Great and Powerful will be his most visible role in years, even if he is playing a CGI monkey for most of the movie.

The actor plays mutton-chopped assistant Frank, who helps James Franco's small-time charlatan with big-time dreams pull off carnival shows in the black and white Kansas-set opening, and then turns into Oz's flying primate pal Finley when the top-hatted magician blows into the wondrous, chromatic town that bears his name.

It's a candy-coloured, 3D world that director Sam Raimi creates for the prequel to The Wizard of Oz and Braff admitted he was enchanted by the elaborate sets where he and Franco...

Robert Altman: The Hollywood Interview

Robert Altman: Eclectic Maverick

By

Alex Simon

Editor’s note: This article originally appeared in the April 1999 issue of Venice Magazine.

It's the Fall of 1977 and I'm a bored and rebellious ten year old in search of a new movie to occupy my underworked and creativity-starved brain, feeling far too mature for previous favorites Wily Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Return of the Pink Panther (1975), and wanting something more up-to-date and edgy than Chaplin's City Lights (1931). I needed a movie to call my favorite that would be symbolic of my own new-found manhood (and something that would really piss off my parents and teachers). Mom and Dad were going out for the evening, leaving me with whatever unfortunate baby-sitter happened to need the $10 badly enough to play mother hen to an obnoxiously precocious only child like myself. I scanned the TV Guide for what...

TV on Tap: "Ben & Kate" Shuts Down, AMC Might Go from "Talking Dead" to "Talking Bad" and "Sex and the City" Goes Where No One Has Gone Before
RuPaul gets to tell a new cast to "Lipsynch for their lives" in a new season of RuPaul's Drag Race.

Kansas City And San Francisco Critics Name The Master Best Picture Of 2012
Both the Kansas City Film Critics Circle and the San Francisco Film Critics Circle announced their annual awards this evening, naming Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master the best picture of 2012. The film also received Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay from Kansas City, while also taking Best Actor from San Francisco.

Kansas City didn’t really hold any other surprises other than an award that we don’t see much among critics groups, one awarded to the Best Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Horror Film of the Year. The recipient was the outstanding The Cabin in the Woods.

San Francisco spread their awards out quite a bit, giving two to several films including Zero Dark Thirty (Best Director and Best Original Screenplay), Lincoln (Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay), and Amour (Best Actress and Best Foreign Language Film).

It’s very interesting how Zero Dark Thirty‘s reign...

Disney Shareholders Support Exec Pay, But By Lower Margin Than Last Year
About 56.6% of Disney‘s shares were cast in favor of its controversial executive compensation plan while 42.8% opposed — down from last year when 76.8% supported and 22.7% opposed – according to the preliminary results announced today at the annual meeting in Kansas City. Shareholders also elected the company’s slate of directors; numbers weren’t broken out for each member. Executive pay became a big issue this year after corporate governance analysts Institutional Shareholder Services (Iss) and Glass Lewis & Co urged investors to oppose the package in an advisory vote. Glass Lewis gave Disney a “D” grade on its pay-for-performance analysis — the fourth consecutive year Disney got the grade. “Overall, the Company paid more than its peers, but performed moderately worse than its peers,” the firm said in a recent report. It urged a “no” vote “to signal dissatisfaction with the Company’s executive compensation program and to compel the board and the compensation committee to take corrective action.

Lisa Lampanelli
Lisa Lampanelli Out $50 Grand Over Twitter And Westboro Baptist
Lisa Lampanelli
Lisa Lampanelli had a cautionary tale about Twitter for David Letterman on "Late Show" (Weeknights, 11:35 p.m. Est on CBS). Be careful what you Tweet or you might find yourself having to put your money where your mouth was. For Lampanelli, it was fifty grand.

A Tweet Costs Lisa Lampanelli $50,000
Lisa Lampanelli
Lisa Lampanelli had a cautionary tale about Twitter for David Letterman on "Late Show" (Weeknights, 11:35 p.m. Est on CBS) -- be careful what you tweet or you might find yourself having to put your money where your mouth was. For Lampanelli, it was $50,000.

J.R. Martinez's 'DWTS' Win Inspires Burn Victims To Proudly Bear Scars
J.R. Martinez
As Iraq War veteran J.R. Martinez hoisted the "Dancing With The Stars" Mirror Ball on Tuesday, countless injured warriors and burn victims walked away with the inspiration to carry on.

"I think J.R. has made an incredibly bold statement to the world, and especially to wounded warriors, that no matter what happens, you can overcome it," military psychologist Tony Franklin told the Leaf Chronicle.

Martinez had every excuse to shy away from the spotlight and just give up hope.

When Martinez's Humvee truck ran over a landmine in Iraq when he was 19, he suffered a coma and intense burns on more than 40 percent of his body. He spent more than two years in the hospital and underwent 33 surgeries, which included painful skin grafts and tissue expansions.

The veteran told the Houston Chronicle that he would cry and yell, "Why are you doing this to me? I don’t even know you!

Zookeeper
Zookeeper

Directed by: Frank Coraci

Cast: Kevin James, Rosario Dawson, Leslie Bibb, Sylvester Stallone, Cher, Adam Sandler, Maya Rudolph, Judd Apatow, Jon Favreau, Nick Nolte

Running Time: 1 hr 44 mins

Rating: PG

Release Date: July 8, 2011

Plot: After a friendly zookeeper (James) threatens to leave his job in order to impress his dream lady, a group of zoo animals break their code of silence to help him nab his mate.

Expectations: Considering the success of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, it was curious to see what James’ next leading family comedy would turn out to be, especially with such a cast voicing his character’s animal friends. Would this be a Hollywood misfire,...

Zookeeper Review: Describing the Final Moments Before I Blacked Out
There's no point in getting into the details, as a review of Zookeeper will only confirm the obvious. So, instead of belaboring the point, let me just describe to you what I saw on the screen in the minutes before I blacked out.

The gorilla had been feeling sad ever since it was locked in a below-the-ground closure with no view of the rest of the zoo, which an assistant zookeeper played by Donnie Wahlberg had put him. The gorilla had of course explained all of this to Kevin James' character, Griffin, who is essentially a bumbling fat guy who falls down a lot and is nervous around women, i.e.

Top 10 Movies: Most Quotable Films
A lot of our modern popular saying and ideas come from movies.  We are a movie saturated society and it shows in everything we do.  Some films are more memorable than others and have a longer shelf life when it comes to repeating key lines.

We thought we'd make up a list of the top 10 most quotable movies of all time.  It was an extensive list and extremely difficult to narrow down.  We could only pick 10, so we did it based on number of memorable quotes and impact of those quotes.

What movies make your list?

10. Clueless:

Tai: "no s*^t, you guys got coke here?!"

Cher: "well yeah, this is america"  Tai: Why am I even listening to you to begin with? You're a virgin that can't drive!  Cher: You know how picky I am about my shoes, and they only go on my feet.  Cher: Oh look,...
