Harden will appear in a series regular role, playing Mayor Christie Holman in the mystery drama. Murder in a Small Town is the ideal cozy mystery series, but it could improve in several ways if it gets a second season.
Even though Fox airs the series in the United States, the show feels like a Canadian procedural with a twist. It featured prominent Canadian actors and was filmed primarily in Gibsons, which has the same name as the series.
The series typically uses a murder-of-a-week format instead of a lingering case throughout the season. It’s been compared to classics like Murder She Wrote and Columbo.
(Fox/ YouTube Screenshot)
While the series has been entertaining, Global TV and Fox must address some issues to renew it for a second season.
Adapting the Source Material So Cases Breathe Better
Book-to-screen adaptations, especially mystery procedurals, are often challenging when the series strives to cover an overlying theme and a case-of-the-week. They also need to balance character dynamics and interpersonal relationships.

Murder in a Small Town, a new mystery series premiering on Fox in the fall of 2024, features a touching connection to Donald Sutherland made all the more remarkable after his death. The series will follow police chief Karl Alberg as he uses his innate instincts, artistic background, and humanity to get to the bottom of murder mysteries that haunt the small coastal town. Trench 11's Rossif Sutherland, one of Donald Sutherland's sons, will lead the series as Karl. Unbeknownst to the younger Sutherland, the Murder in a Small Town series has its roots in his recently deceased father.
Donald Sutherland died at 88 in 2024, from a variety of health complications. When Murder in a Small Town premieres in September 2024, the series will, in part, be dedicated to the Canadian actor. The reasoning is more profound than Donald Sutherland being the Karl Alberg actor's father; Fox's new series ties directly back to the late star,...

After production on Fox’s upcoming series Murder in a Small Town wrapped on the southern Sunshine Coast of Canada in mid-May, star Rossif Sutherland headed to America’s Sunshine State to be with his father, Donald Sutherland, who would die a month later. Rossif was actually scheduled to do voice-over (Adr) work for the show from Miami on the day his father died — one of several elements that tie the two men to Murder in a Small Town, a passion project of Donald’s for 30 years. Reflecting that, the series will include a dedication to the late actor when it debuts on Fox on September 24 with a 90-minute premiere.
“There was a lot of serendipity around this project,” Rossif, in his first interview since his father’s death, said about the series based on late Canadian author L.R. Wright’s Alberg novels, which follows big-city detective Karl Alberg (Sutherland...
