Young Love (2023)
The first trailer for Max’s family-friendly animated comedy “Young Love” has arrived. The 12-episode series comes from Matthew A. Cherry, the Oscar-winning creator behind the short “Hair Love,” and Sony Pictures Animation.

As Angela struggles to maintain a work-life balance in the wake of her battle with cancer, Stephen attempts to make a name for himself in the highly competitive music industry. How ‘Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur’ and ‘My Dad the Bounty Hunter’ Break Ground for Black Families in Animation
Image
When The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder debuted last year on Disney+, it called back to the bygone era of Black TV sitcoms in which its 2001 Disney Channel predecessor shined. One where Black families, culture and people were not only celebrated on the small screens in living rooms across the country, but the central focal point of multiple simultaneously airing (though mostly live-action) series.

Its return on Feb. 3, however, pointed to a stunning reality. While the original series aired in the 2000s alongside a handful of animated kids shows also featuring Black leads, including Filmore!, Static Shock, Tutenstein and Little Bill, there has since been only a handful of animated shows aimed at non-adult audiences that explicitly center Black leads and, more specifically, their families.

“Ralph [Farquhar] and I always thought there were gonna be people coming up beside us, making shows that will continue to display this potpourri of Blackness in animation,...

‘My Dad the Bounty Hunter’ Creators on What Inspired Their New Netflix Animated Series
Laz Alonso, Keith David, Patrick Harpin, Yvonne Orji, Priah Ferguson, Thando Thabethe, and Jecobi Swain in My Dad the Bounty Hunter (2023)
On the surface My Dad the Bounty Hunter is a typical fun kid-friendly animated adventure series. Venture a little deeper and it becomes apparent that this is a space story grounded in a family dynamic that will resonate with all ages. Terry (Laz Alonso) is a galactic bounty hunter named Sabo Brok who takes on jobs from some bad dudes. He does it to support his two kids Lisa (Priah Ferguson) and Sean (JeCobi Swain). Unfortunately, being away from home so much meant not being there for them the way he would have wanted and ultimately caused a separation from his wife Tess (Yvonne Orji). From creators and executive producers Everett Downing (Hair Love) and Patrick Harpin (Hotel Transylvania 2), the Netflix show really picks up when Lisa and Sean sneak aboard Terry’s ship and find out quickly what their father really does for a living. Talk about an epic future Career Day presentation!

Annecy: Netflix Animation Debuts New Footage From Filmmakers Including Henry Selick and Jordan Peele
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Netflix Animation showcased a bevy of upcoming, diverse projects this week at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival: That included the unveiling of a scene from the anticipated Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio; the world premiere of Oscar winner Chris Williams’ original The Sea Beast, which premieres July 8 on the streaming service; and new footage from Henry Selick and Jordan Peele’s stop-motion Wendell & Wild.

The animation arm has been closely watched since April, when during its first-quarter earnings announcement, Netflix reported it had lost 200,000 subscribers in the quarter and expected to lose an additional 2 million during the second quarter. Since then, its animation business was affected by layoffs and several cancelled projects, such as Meghan Markle’s Pearl.

At the the same time, Netflix Animation is the process of opening a new Burbank facility to house its original feature animation projects.

During Annecy,...

Nickelodeon Recreates Iconic ‘Great Day in Harlem’ Photograph With 54 Black Animation Professionals (Exclusive)
Image
In 1958, Esquire published “A Great Day in Harlem,” a photo taken by Art Kane of 57 jazz musicians ranging from Thelonious Monk to Coleman Hawkins gathered together on a New York City stoop. In an homage to that historic picture, on June 5, 2022, Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Pictures organized “A Great Day in Animation,” which features 54 Black professionals working in animation today. Taken by Randy Shropshire with Jeff Vespa as production lead and obtained exclusively by Variety, the photo is above.

Though Nickelodeon and Paramount put the event together and hosted it on the Paramount backlot, “A Great Day in Animation” includes artists from all across the industry. The idea for the photo came from Marlon West, a visual effects supervisor for Disney whose credits include “The Lion King,” “Encanto” and the upcoming Disney+ series “Iwájú.” For decades, West has been moved by “A Great Day in Harlem,” as well as Jean Bach...

View 2020 Conference Boosts Profile, Expands Reach, Going Digital and Free
Image
Italy’s View Conference, the week-long confab featuring top creatives from around the world in film, television, games, virtual reality, and more is going entirely digital this year with all live sessions being made available for free to a global audience.

Usually the high-caliber event, now in its 21st edition, which spotlights the latest in computer graphics, animation, and visual effects of various types, is held in Turin against an Alpine backdrop. Over the years it has evolved into a Davos-like conference where the digital creative community’s top execs fly in to hear each other’s talks and hobnob, perhaps over a nice bottle of Barolo. That aspect due to Covid-19 is being scrapped this year though “virtual rooms” following presentations are being set up.

Of course it won’t be the same thing. But conference director Maria Gutierrez says there are also some advantages to being online only.

Watch This Year’s Oscar-Winning Short Films for Free
Bong Joon Ho
While Bong Joon Ho and the historic Parasite victories deservedly dominated Academy Awards-related headlines this past week, one of our favorite moments of the ceremony is when they put the spotlight on short film work. All 15 of the nominated films enjoyed a theatrical release and digital release in the past weeks, but now it’s easier than ever to watch the victors.

The trio of impressive winners in Animation (Matthew A. Cherry’s Hair Love), Documentary (Carol Dysinger’s Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)), and Live Action (Marshall Curry’s The Neighbors’ Window) are now available for free, offering a preview of the talented directors who we imagine will return to awards season with expanded projects in the years to come.

Oscars 2020: Though It Lost Best Picture, ‘1917’ Dominated the Crafts Awards
Stuart Wilson plays Don Rafael Montero
Though it lost Best Picture, “1917,” Sam Mendes’ single-shot, World War I extravaganza, was rewarded with the most crafts Oscars Sunday night. For its technical virtuosity it received three awards, powered by cinematographer Roger Deakins’ second win for his brilliant camera choreography.

Deakins was joined by the sound mixing team of Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for their intricate soundscape as part of the continuous-shot narrative, and, surprisingly, Mpc Film (the dark horse winner) for VFX. Ironically, though, Mpc’s win overshadowed its own innovative virtual production and photoreal animation on Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King.” Yet this supporting visual effects work played an integral role in making stitches invisible and creating CG environments (including No Man’s Land and the burning village of Écoust).

Meanwhile, Pixar won its 10th animated feature Oscar for “Toy Story 4,” and “Hair Love,” the black father-daughter bonding work, took home the animated short Oscar.

‘2020 Oscar-Nominated Short Films: Animation’: Film Review
No 2020 Oscar category can boast a higher level of quality — or diversity, for that matter — than the animated shorts, and though the five nominees are among the least-seen, film buffs would do well to track them down all the same. This also happens to be the category that scales best to smaller screens, and which can be watched in increments ranging from seven to 15 minutes apiece, so do yourself a favor and seek them out. Despite the range of origins and animation styles represented, , and so on, with a fifth short about an unlikely pairing of pets thrown in for good measure.

In ShortsTV’s theatrical lineup, the first short is the likely winner, “Hair Love,” written by Matthew A. Cherry, a former NFL wide receiver who made his directing debut with the live-action football drama “The Last Fall.” Here, Cherry imagines an instantly engaging — if somewhat emotionally manipulative — way...

‘2020 Oscar Shorts: Animated’ Film Review: Nominated Cartoons Run the Gamut from Heartfelt to Heartbreaking
The Oscar-nominated animated short films don’t get nearly as much press as the Oscar-nominated animated features, and that’s a bit of a tragedy. Every year the nominees are artistically ambitious, stylistically varied, and often deeply personal. Even the worst of this year’s nominees has something to say, and a fascinating way of saying it.

And since all of this year’s nominees are all genuinely short — the longest tops out at just under 15 minutes — the theatrical release of the Oscar-nominated animated shorts by ShortsTV is accompanied by four additional “Highly Commended” works of animation. At least one of the additional films probably deserved a nomination too.

The animated short that most audiences are probably familiar with is Matthew A. Cherry, Everett Downing Jr. and Bruce W. Smith’s “Hair Love,” which originally premiered in front of the blockbuster “The Angry Birds Movie 2.” The film is about an...

Oscars 2020: Why ‘Hair Love’ Leads Strong Best Animated Shorts
The Best Animated Shorts race is about the difficulty of connecting as families and friends. There are three stop-motion works, and two that are 2D (“Hair Love” and “Kitbull”). Three are directed by women — “Daughter’s” Daria Kashcheeva, “Kitbull’s” Rosana Sullivan, and “Sister’s” Siqi Song” — and “Hair Love” is directed by black filmmaker Matthew Cherry. All are very personal in tackling loneliness and fear and advancing animation to achieve intimate, abstract expressions.

“Hair Love,” the frontrunner, concerns a single black father trying to do his daughter’s hair for the first time. It was financed through Kickstarter, animated by Six Point Harness, and distributed by Sony Pictures Animation. Animation newbie Cherry (“BlacKkKlansman” executive producer) was intrigued about the trend of black dads doing their daughters’ hair on YouTube videos going viral. “I wanted to [turn around] those negative stereotypes of dads not being involved in their kids’ lives, and represent that mainstream,...

Daughter (Dcera) | Czechia | 15 Mins

Our lives are full of regret. Sometimes we possess the strength to overcome it. Sometimes we don’t try until the opportunity is already lost. This risk is present at the heart of Daria Kashcheeva’s Daughter and its father/daughter duo quietly at odds while he lies in a hospital bed. Neither is willing to break the silence and we’re unsure why until a crash is heard and a bird found beneath a broken window. It jogs both characters into a state of remembrance: the daughter recalling a moment where her dad let her down and then her returning the favor years later. The distance between them is revealed as something both have manifested in their heads, but its power refuses to let them confront its pain.

Breakthrough Animated Short ‘Hair Love’ Embraces Black Father-Daughter Bonding: Watch
John David Washington in BlacKkKlansman (2018)
Animation newbie Matthew Cherry (“BlacKkKlansman” executive producer) has entered the Best Animated Short Oscar race with “Hair Love,” which warmly embraces black father-daughter bonding over doing her hair for the first time. “I was intrigued about the trend of black dads doing their daughter’s hair on YouTube videos that went viral,” he said. “I wanted to [turn around] those negative stereotypes of dads not being involved in their kids’ lives, and represent that mainstream, modern day family that exits right now.”

The indie-produced short, distributed by Sony Pictures Animation, launched as a Kickstarter campaign in 2017. With strong black industry support, though, it amassing nearly $300,000, the most highly-funded short film campaign in Kickstarter history. Cherry formed a directing team with animators Everett Downing Jr. and Bruce Smith (creator of “The Proud Family”), and received early support from Karen Rupert Toliver during her transition from Blue Sky to Sony (where she’s currently...

Stories can change the world. That’s what Alchemy Engine, the team behind “Book of Mojo” believes. And they’re hoping to prove it with an urban fantasy about a 13-year-old runaway witch and her unlikely ally, an amnesiac 7-foot enchanted statue. But Alchemy Engine needs your help to bring the pilot episode to life. The story of “Book of Mojo” centers around Creepy, a homeless teenage witch in search of her missing father. Then Mojo, a giant enchanted statue, literally falls into her life. With no memory of his past, Creepy agrees to help Mojo, for her own reasons. But things quickly spiral out of control when a group of black magic users called The Brokerage come to claim Mojo, saying they created him. The duo must then go on the run into the labyrinth of city streets, avoiding a magic-wielding crime syndicate, the cops, and Creepy’s personal rivals.

Pixar Artist Illustrates 365 New Superheroes for 2013
Pixar artist Everett Downing has epic New Year's resolutions. He's creating and illustrating 365 newly invented superheroes in a year. He started the project a few years ago, but website Design Taxi reports that he got into a bit of a rut. In an interview with Wired, Downing said working on his 365 Supers series has been an enormous creative aid. "It helped me loosen up — I was getting stagnant in my drawing. I was reluctant to take risks." At the moment, Downing has completed 291 artworks. You can track his progress over here. Some of his illustrations include little quotes or snippets of text that seem to inform the character's personality or powers. The superheroes range from the absurd, to the kind we definitely wouldn't mind reading more about...

Epic Superhero Art from Pixar Artist Everett Downing
Pixar artist Everett Downing (Wall-e, Up and Ratatouille) decided 3 years ago that he was going to attempt to draw one superhero a day for a full year. The project, called 365 Supers, features heroes with some interesting names, such as "The Man Handler", "Dober-Man", "Epidermis", "Blacksmith", and more.

The project was initially started to break through a creativity block he was facing. While he did not complete his resolution, the art he did create is pretty darn cool. Check it out and share your thoughts.
