Willem Dafoe Named Artistic Director of Venice Biennale Theater Department: “I Am a Stage Animal”

Willem Dafoe is the new artistic director of the theater department of the Italian arts organization La Biennale di Venezia, the Venice Biennale, for a two-year term 2025-2026.

“Theater is in fact the original home of his lustrous career,” said Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, chair of the board of directors of the Biennale, which is the foundation that oversees the Venice Film Festival. “One of the founders of the legendary Wooster Group in 1977, the perfect control of his body on stage has always stemmed from discipline, knowledge, passion and a profound awareness of theater. I can’t wait, like everyone else, to be a spectator at the festival he will build as artistic director and — from his lectern as an absolute maestro — to watch the young men and women of the Theater College grow in their art.”

Pupi Avati's "Giovanna's Father" will have its world premiere at the Mann Chinese 6 Hollywood Theatre on Feb. 15 as the opening event of the weeklong fourth annual Los Angeles Italia -- Film, Fashion and Art Festival.

The celebration of Italian culture will showcase of the U.S. premieres of four other Italian films: Massimo Spano's documentary "Franco Cristaldi: An Italian Legend," Maurizio Scaparro's "The Last Pulcinella," Brando de LSica's "Christian de Sica: Talk About Me" and Pierpaolo Pasolini's "La Rabbia."

Chaired by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bobby Moresco and co-chaired by Marina Cicogna, Tony Renis, Mark Canton, Paul Haggis and Steven Zaillian, the fest, headed by festival director Pascal Vicedomini, also will include a tribute to the late Anthony Minghella.

Francesconi new head of Italy's AGIS
ROME -- Italian exhibition executive Alberto Francesconi has been appointed president of entertainment industry trade organization AGIS, the group said Tuesday. Francesconi is the former chief of ANEC, Italy's exhibitors organization. He replaces playwright Giorgio Van Straten at AGIS' helm. Renowned Italian theater director Maurizio Scaparro will be AGIS' deputy chief. AGIS comprises the country's trade organizations in the fields of cinema, theater, dance and music. As head of AGIS, Francesconi becomes the Italian film industry's main liaison with the government.
