Hellish Hags and Grisly Grandmas: Six Modern Horror Films Featuring Dangerous Older Women
Image
We’re accustomed to viewing the elderly as kind and benevolent. Perhaps they’re our diminutive granny still married to her landline or our chatty great aunt who’s obsessed with her garden. We make duty calls on Sundays and trust them to safeguard family traditions. They are pleasant, benign, and ultimately absent from the day to day bustle of everyday life.

But the horror genre knows better with sinister octogenarians hiding in plain sight. They may fool us with quaint sayings, rambling stories, and a slightly vacant smile, but they’re often just as devious as women half their age.

Karl R. Hearne’s The G. follows an extremely dangerous older lady. Nicknamed “The G,” Ann Hunter (Dale Dickey) may seem feeble and frail, but when she’s forced into elder care by a devious thief, she has no problem taking justice into her own gnarled hands. Dickey stuns...

Weezer Appears to Be Dream-Casting Their Movie — Starting With Jack Black
Image
Unfortunately for pretty much everyone, Jack Black is not joining the cast of the upcoming Weezer movie.

Rumors began to swirl that the Tenacious D musician was attached to the movie after frontman Rivers Cuomo, shared an AI-generated film poster on band’s Discord server. The poster features photos of Cuomo and Black, as well as the band, and reads: “Weezer costarring Jack Black.” Cuomo added in a caption, “Nope, it’s real.”

However, it appears that it wasn’t so real after all, and perhaps more of a manifestation or dream-casting situation,...

Keanu Reeves to Play Villain in Weezer Movie: Report
Image
While playing at Coachella last weekend, frontman Rivers Cuomo let it slip that the band was working on a “Weezer movie back in L.A.” While he stopped short of divulging any other details, according to a report from film insider Jeff Sneider, the project is “mockumentary” described as a cross between Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. And none other than Keanu Reeves has reportedly been cast to play the villain in the film.

Reeves and Weezer actually go way back: the band’s first-ever public gig was opening for Reeves’ own group, Dogstar, in 1992. In 2024, the two bands reunited — this time with Dogstar opening for Weezer as they celebrated the 30th anniversary of The Blue Album. Apparently, Weezer and Reeves’ three-decade “rivalry” is a key part of the film’s plot.

Along with Reeves, the Weezer movie will reportedly star Juliette Lewis, Eric Andre,...

A Soldier and a Cop Get Superpowers in Netflix's Unpredictable Sci-Fi Action Movie Starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Image
"What would you do if you had superpowers?" This is a question that's been asked by science-fiction and comic book buffs, but Netflix took it to a whole new level with the 2020 blockbuster Project Power. Written by Mattson Tomlin and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, Project Power tracks the rise of a mysterious drug named "Power" that grants superhuman abilities to whoever ingests it. Teenager Robin (Dominique Fishback) is dealing Power, but soon gets caught up in a conspiracy that involves police officer Frank Shaver (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and the mysterious Art (Jamie Foxx), who is seeking the source of Power. The end result is a movie that's both action-packed and is one of the few Netflix original movies to live up to its promise, or at the very least be more than something to put on while the viewers fold laundry.

Think You Understand Catfishing? You Need To Watch the Shocking Documentary That Invented the Term
Image
You can never know what to expect when you find yourself on the journey of uncovering the truth. That's what MTV's highly popular reality series, Catfish: The TV Show, is about. Yaniv "Nev" Schulman leads viewers on a quest to bring couples who have only interacted online together in real life. Those first-time interactions usually break into fights and over-the-top meltdowns when they discover that the people they have been "in love" with have lied about their identities. It's a bizarre and entertaining show that stems from the 2010 documentary film Catfish, directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost. The film is not as salacious as the series, but it is a fascinating documentary that starts on a mysterious tone with Ariel's brother, Nev, taking center stage with his online crush. It started with a Facebook request from an 8-year-old child named Abby Pierce, and from then on, Nev was...

Ten Best: Horror Movie Threequels That Nailed the Fear Factor
Image
The third film in a horror franchise often carries the weight of high expectations and franchise fatigue. However, some horror “threequels” break the mold, delivering scares, thrills, and fresh twists. Here are ten of the best horror movie threequels that deserve your attention.

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

Director: Chuck Russell

This third instalment reinvigorates Freddy Krueger with a mix of dark humour, creative dream sequences, and a cast of characters who fight back. It’s a fan favourite for good reason.

2. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Director: Tommy Lee Wallace

Although it departs from Michael Myers entirely, this standalone entry is a cult classic in its own right. Its eerie plot about a sinister mask company and haunting jingle makes it a unique entry in the Halloween franchise.

3. The Exorcist III (1990)

Director: William Peter Blatty

Returning to the chilling tone of the original, this sequel...

The Full Timeline Of The Paranormal Activity Movies Explained
Image
Oren Pelis supernatural found-footage horror film Paranormal Activity spawned a franchise that included seven movies, so the Paranormal Activity timeline needs some explaining. The films follow the history of two sisters named Katie and Kristi who are tormented by a demonic entity, "Toby." As the franchise expanded with sequels, prequels, and parallel installments, the exact timeline of events remains complicated. The franchise shares a basic premise: supernatural occurrences that are caught "found-footage" such as security systems, webcams, and more.

The 2021 installment Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin was a soft reboot since it is the first installment in the franchise to feature a new demonic entity: Asmodeus, based on the real-life Abrahamic dogma. The next title in the franchise, The Other Side, returned to Paranormal Activity's core story, centering on "Toby" once again and continuing the story from where Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension left off. The installments aren't released chronologically,...

‘Catfish’ Co-Host Kamie Crawford Announces Exit After 6 Years
Image
Nev Schulman has some particularly wise heels to fill with his next onscreen partner.

She joined the show with Season 7 in 2018 after being one of several to guest host alongside Schulman, following the departure of Max Joseph, who co-hosted Catfish since it premiered in 2012.

Jamie Foxxs Forgotten Superhero Movie Was Much Better Than His First Comic Book Role
Image
Jamie Foxx has come a long way since playing Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and he starred in Project Power, a 2020 original superhero movie that was better in many ways. Foxx, a well-rounded and widely respected performer, has played a lot of great characters and never limited himself to one genre, ranging from action to comedy and everything in between. One of his most infamous roles, however, was the electrifying villain in the 2014 sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which many people consider one of the weakest Spider-Man movies.

Foxx did get to redeem his venture as Electro in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but not before he proved that he could bring something fresh to the superhero genre. In the Netflix original Project Power, which spent the first two weeks of release at the top of the streaming charts, Foxx plays the military fugitive, Art, the main protagonist who hunts...

Where The Term "Catfish" Comes From (Not The TV Show)
Image
The term "catfish" originated from a 2010 documentary that inspired the hit MTV reality series, shedding light on online deception. Catfish: The TV Show, now in its 9th season, continues to capture the emotional impact of being misled in online relationships. Manti Te'o's public scandal in 2013 further popularized the term "catfish," leading to its inclusion in the Miriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary.

While many associate the term "catfish" with the 2012 MTV reality show, Catfish: The TV Show, its origins trace back to a 2010 documentary that inspired the series. The term has become ingrained in common language, often used to describe a person who creates a fake online persona with the purpose of deceiving others, particularly in romantic contexts. The documentary not only highlighted the emotional impact of online deception, but also introduced a word to describe it. The problem with catfishing hasn't subsided; people are still being catfished today, and the MTV reality series,...

Paranormal Activity Order, Explained
Image
Horror movies can occasionally float just above the "average" line when it comes to cinematic quality. They're considered more of an "entertainment" genre than anything else. Only a few horror standalone movies and franchises have managed to establish themselves as a quality product of good writing, direction, and execution. In the horror genre, franchises like Paranormal Activity have established a solid fan base by playing with the worst possible human fears of the unknown and out-of-the-box ideas. Paranormal Activity redefined the found-footage trope after The Blair Witch Project and became a prominent club member even though it wasn't as iconic as The Exorcist or The Conjuring.

However, the franchise did develop a cult following with its surprisingly accurate portrayal of human anxieties related to what might happen around the house when everyone is in a deep eight-hour night's sleep. Almost every person who watched Paranormal Activity must have thought about...

Catfish: The TV Show Hosts Talk Psych Evaluations, Scammers, and the Moments They Can’t Air
Image
It’s getting harder to make a real romantic connection these days, and no one understands that more than Nev Schulman. Back in 2010, the native New Yorker became the subject of a successful documentary directed by his brother Ariel and Henry Joost. Nev had forged a sweet, romantic relationship with a beautiful woman on Facebook – or at least he thought he had. As the documentary crew dug deeper into the woman’s life, they discovered that much of what she had told Nev was a lie, and the term “catfish” was coined.

Over a decade later, Catfish and its meaning are part of the cultural lexicon, and Schulman is still heavily involved in the investigative concept of the original movie, producing and co-hosting a hugely popular MTV docuseries exposing the online truths, lies, and scams encountered by a seemingly endless stream of lonely and lovelorn people over hundreds of episodes.

Sadly, Pressman passed away earlier this year at the age of 79. Now his son Sam Pressman is the CEO of Pressman Film, which recently rebooted The Crow – and landed an eight-figure domestic distribution deal for the film with Lionsgate. Moving forward, the company is working with Antoine Fuqua on a project called The Street, which was written by Goodfellas‘ Nicholas Pileggi, and planning an adaptation of the 1975 Edward Abbey novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, which will be directed by Catfish‘s Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. They’re also trying to figure out how they can exploit titles in the Pressman Film library… and in a recent article, Deadline mentions that endeavor might involve remakes of the 1980 holiday horror film Christmas Evil...

Sam Pressman Talks ‘The Crow’ Reboot, Continuing His Father’s Legacy And Why Industry Should Look To Embrace AI

Growing up as the only son of Ed Pressman, the prolific Hollywood independent producer behind more than 90 major productions including Wall Street, American Psycho and The Crow, it’s fair to say that the film business has always been in Sam Pressman’s blood.

“As a little kid, I got to be on set a lot and feel that beautiful sense of live shoots,” says Pressman, now CEO of Pressman Film, which was established by his late father in 1969. “Movies are deep inside of me, but I didn’t always believe that I would go into film. I really loved it more as an art. I remember taking a silent film class in my freshman year of college where we watched the really tough silent documentary Man With a Movie Camera and we studied it as a cultural phenomenon – it was fascinating.”

But his father’s love of the independent...

The following day, creator Ryan Murphy hopped on the phone with the press to reveal that the story presented in the first season of the show (retroactively dubbed American Horror Story: Murder House) was definitively over and future seasons of the show would feature new characters, new locations, and new plot lines. In short, American Horror Story was a surprise anthology series, something that Murphy and fellow co-creator Brad Falchuk had planned from the start.

Some 11 years later, the decision to turn American Horror Story into an anthology does not seem that radical. In the streaming era, many shows opt to continue on as anthologies after wrapping up a story to their satisfaction in season 1. Some recent examples include The Terror,...

Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster,’ ‘The Watcher’ Renewed at Netflix
Image
Click here to read the full article.

After breakout successes from Ryan Murphy’s two latest Netflix series, the streamer is doubling (and tripling) down on both.

Netflix has ordered two additional installments of Monster after huge viewing figures for its Jeffrey Dahmer-focused season and picked up a second season of The Watcher. The former will become an anthology series a la Murphy’s FX shows American Horror Story and American Crime Story, with “stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society,” per Netflix. Creative details about season two of The Watcher are being kept quiet for now, so it’s unclear if it too will become an anthology or continue the unsettling story from the first season, which left several things open-ended.

Murphy and long-time collaborator Ian Brennan created Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and the two teamed with Narcos boss Eric Newman on The Watcher.

Netflix is going the anthology route with “Monster,” with the streamer ordering two additional seasons of the series. Netflix has also ordered Season 2 of “The Watcher.”

Both shows were created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. “Monster” launched Sept. 21, while “The Watcher” debuted on Oct. 13.

The first season of “Monster” was officially titled “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” and followed the life and crimes of the infamous serial killer. The two new installments will each focus on “other monstrous figures who have impacted society,” per Netflix.

“Monster” proved to be a massive success, debuting atop both the Netflix and Nielsen streaming charts. It was also the number one show on the Nielsen chart for three straight weeks. According to Netflix, it is the streamer’s second most popular English TV season ever.

“Audiences can’t take their eyes off ‘Monster’ and ‘The Watcher,'” said Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s head of global TV.

Netflix Expands Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster’ Franchise With Two More Installments Following ‘Dahmer’ Success & Renews ‘The Watcher’ For Season 2
Image
Ryan Murphy has another anthology after Netflix ordered two additional installments of his Monster franchise following the success of Dahmer.

The streamer has also ordered a second season of his drama series The Watcher.

Neither move is a surprise given the ratings success of both shows, particularly the outsized ratings of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which is on course to reach 1B hours viewed in the coming weeks.

Both Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher come from American Horror Story co-creator Murphy and Glee co-creator Ian Brennan.

Netflix didn’t disclose what the two additional installments of the Monster anthology franchise will cover but said that they will “tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society”.

Murphy is behind an incredible number of franchises including American Horror Story, American Horror Stories, American Crime Story, American Love Story, Feud and 9-1-1.

‘The Watcher’: Ryan Murphy Takes Pride In Having Cast Older Women In His Limited Series For Netflix
Image
Ryan Murphy sat down with the female cast members of The Watcher to reflect on the true crime genre and discuss who may have been the true voyeur who inspired his Netflix limited series.

But first, Murphy was happy to take credit for accomplishing what few — if any — Hollywood projects try to accomplish these days: casting not one, but five women of a certain age.

“People are always writing articles about how there are no roles for women over 40,” Murphy said to stars Naomi Watts, Jennifer Coolidge, Margo Martindale, Mia Farrow and Nova Dumezweni. “That’s not true … I try. I love the scenes that you women all have together.”

He also told the cast members that for the first time in his career, every one of them was his first choice for the seven-parter that dropped Oct. 13. Watts plays Nora Brannock, the co-owner of the house (with Bobby Cannavale...

‘The Watcher’ Teaser: Jennifer Coolidge Can’t Wait To Sell You A Home In Ryan Murphy’s Limited Series
Image
Netflix has unveiled an unconventional teaser for Ryan Murphy’s upcoming limited series The Watcher. It’s also the streamer’s first official confirmation of the series.

The White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge hosts a three-minute “open house” video as realtor Karen Calhoun.

“Hi, I’m Karen Calhoun from Darren Dunn Realty,” says Coolidge at the opening of the teaser. “This is 657 Boulevard,” she continues, “and this is my listing.”

“Are you ready?, your dream home awaits,” she adds.

The teaser could pass for a legit open house tour, except for a couple of things that are a bit telling — such as when Karen suggests you could fit an entire body in the home’s dumbwaiter, and when she fears opening the bedroom curtains because of “weird neighbors” who might be peering in.

Co-created by Murphy and Ian Brennan, the series, starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale,...
