2 Veteran Superhero Actors Join Bad Boys Creator's New Thriller
Image
Halle Berry and Djimon Hounsou are heading to Africa. The two actors are set to lead the upcoming thriller Red Card.

According to Deadline, Joel Souza has been tapped to direct Red Card. The filmmaker's previous credits include Christmas Trade, Crown Vic, and Rust, the latter of which became notorious for a fatal shooting accident involving actor Alec Baldwin. Unlike Rust, which Souza also wrote the screenplay for, Red Card was written by George Gallo and Nick Vallelonga (Green Book) from a story by Ava Roosevelt, Robert Menzies, and Michael J. Hershman, who were, in turn, inspired by real events out of Africa.

"Red Card is a fantastic script, from writers who have created film classics, and Djimon is an actor of uncommon power and depth," said Souza in a statement. "Together, we all look forward to telling a thrilling story we truly believe will grip audiences worldwide."

Red Card: Halle Berry & Djimon Hounsou join the upcoming thriller written by Bad Boys creator George Gallo and Nick Vallelonga
Halle Berry
Halle Berry and Djimon Hounsou are booking a trip to Africa for Red Card, the upcoming thriller written by Bad Boys creator George Gallo and Green Book screenwriter Nick Vallelonga. The newly announced project finds Berry and Hounsou traveling to the sprawling grasslands of Kenya’s Maasai Mara and the Moroccan port city of Casablanca. The National Centre for Missing & Exploited Children backs the project, which the Soloviev Foundation also supports.

Rust and Crown Vic helmer Joel Souza directs Red Card from Gallo and Vallelonga’s screenplay. The film is based on an original story inspired by real events in Africa by Ava Roosevelt, Robert Menzies, and Michael J. Hershman.

According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Hounsou plays Max Elmi, “a veteran ranger battling poachers in Kenya who joins forces with Dane Harris, a tenacious special agent and part of a team led by FBI supervisor Amanda Bruckner (Berry) working...

‘And Just Like That’ Creator, Sarah Jessica Parker Break Down That Charged Aidan Dinner
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “And Just Like That” Season 3, Episode 4.

When “And Just Like That” brought (John Corbett) back, the writers knew Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan’s new shot at romance would be far from simple.

“We made a decision that Aidan got pulled away from Carrie because of his family, which felt realistic. Our goal was then to make a realistic family so that you could believe it,” series developer and EP Michael Patrick King told TheWrap.

In Season 2, Aidan explains that he has to return home to Virginia to deal with his youngest son Wyatt (Logan Souza), who’s acting out in the wake of Aidan’s separation from his ex-wife. For most of Seasons 2 and 3, Aidan’s home life is a murky concept that simply stands in the way of Carrie and Aidan being together. But with Carrie’s visit to Virginia, the...

“I Gave it Full Tilt”: ‘MobLand’s Pierce Brosnan Addresses Criticism Over His Irish Accent in Guy Ritchie’s Crime Series
Image
There’s only one episode remaining in Guy Ritchie’s new crime series, MobLand, which features a top-heavy roster of talent. Leading the charge is Tom Hardy as Harry da Souza, and starring alongside him are Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren as Conrad Harrigan and Maeve Harrigan, respectively. The show follows Souza, a street-smart fixer who finds himself in the middle of two families warring for power. The Harrigans are an Irish crime family who operate in London in MobLand, and one of the stars has come under fire for his Irish accent. Fans have criticized Brosnan’s accent in the series, so much so that he’s finally clapped back at the haters. During an interview with Radio Times, Brosnan, who was born in Ireland and moved to England when he was young, spoke about this and even mentioned how much Conrad’s accent differs from his own, which...

Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna Review – Cinematic Craft and Corporate Cost-Cutting
Image
In the opening moments of Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna, we hear Halyna Hutchins’s voice calling, “That looks great,” just before the sun dips below the New Mexico horizon. It’s a haunting invitation into Rachel Mason’s deeply personal documentary, which stitches together Halyna’s final day on the Rust set with the wider story of how an indie Western shoot became the scene of a fatal accident.

Mason pays tribute to Hutchins’s vibrant creativity—her flair for wide, dynamic compositions and her passion for storytelling—while tracing the events of October 21, 2021, when a prop gun discharged live ammunition. Key figures step forward: Hutchins herself, viewed through personal footage; Alec Baldwin, whose role as actor and producer looms large; Joel Souza, the director who survived the same shot; and Mason, whose friendship with Halyna anchors the film’s heart.

This documentary weaves heartfelt remembrance...

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Rust Finally Arrived At The Box Office – And It Was Totally Ignored
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

More than three years after the on-set incident that put the movie on the world's radar, Alec Baldwin's "Rust" has arrived. In late 2021, during the initial phase of production, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed when Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun that he thought only had blank rounds in it. It's a tragedy that has reshaped the conversation about on-set safety regarding firearms. But in part because Hutchins' family is benefiting from the proceeds generated by the movie, it has officially been released both in theaters and on digital marketplaces.

Despite the high-profile nature of everything surrounding the production of the film, its theatrical debut was all but ignored. "Rust" made just $25,000 during its opening weekend, playing on 115 screens. That put it at 27th on the domestic charts, just behind the documentary "Secret Mall Apartment," which made $29,750 on just 39 screens,...

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Film Gets More Bad News at Box Office After Leaving Critics Unimpressed
Image
This weekend’s box office saw Thunderbolts*easily take the No. 1 spot with $76 million from 4,330 theaters. However, it was another story for Rust, the problematic film from actor and writer Alec Baldwin. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Rust, directed and co-written by Joel Souza, took in $25,000 in its debut weekend in limited release. The film had a budget of around $8 million.

The $25,000 total comes from just 115 theaters after the movie was finally released four years after its star, Baldwin, accidentally discharged a weapon on set that killed the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and wounded Souza. Baldwin thought the weapon contained only blanks, but the chamber contained a live round of ammunition.

The Lawsuit was Ultimately Settled

A lawsuit followed the events, with Hutchins’ family settling and all charges being dropped against Baldwin. Baldwin paid a settlement to the cinematographer’s family, and Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, was made an executive producer on the film.

Box Office: ‘Thunderbolts*’ Flies to Solid $76M Opening, Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust’ Flails
Image
A group of misfits and outsiders are making headlines at the box office after winning over audiences and critics in a major way.

Marvel and Disney’s Thunderbolts* soared to the top of the domestic chart with an estimated domestic opening of $76 million from 4,330 theaters, slightly ahead of expectations for a superhero pic that features lesser-known characters. While Marvel and Disney would no doubt have liked north of $80 million, the biggest factor will be how the $180 million movie legs out.

Overseas, the star-studded ensemble pic led by Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan pulled in $86.1 million for a global start of $162.1 million; again, in line with expectations. The global Imax haul was a huge $20 million.

It drew impressive audience sentiment across the board, including boasting a glowing 95 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the third-highest score for a title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a tie with Spider-Man: Far From Home...

Rust Review — Alec Baldwin’s Western is Quietly Moving, Haunting
Image
Four years after the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, Alec Baldwin’s Western is finally releasing in theaters. Despite, or perhaps because of, the controversy surrounding it, this film will likely go under most people’s radar. It’s a surprisingly heartfelt Western about the bond between a young vagrant and an aging cowboy, beautifully shot and nicely paced. Still, it’s difficult to watch without the weight of its history looming over it.

Rust Review

Rust is, unfortunately, doomed to always be overshadowed by the tragic events of its production. In October 2021, Hutchins was killed after a live bullet was discharged from Baldwin’s prop gun. This horrifying accident came as a result of multiple catastrophic failures in the production process. The film now carries an unavoidable legacy of tragedy that colors every frame.

The story follows Lucas Hollister (Patrick Scott McDermott), a...

'Rust' Stars Comment on the Polarizing Film Release and Honoring Halyna Hutchins
Image
The cast of the controversial Western film Rust has commented on the film's release after a difficult process to complete production after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was accidentally shot and killed on set in October 2021. In 2023, production resumed, and while some returned to finish their scenes, others had to be replaced. Among the new stars were Patrick Scott McDermott and Josh Hopkins, who replaced Brady Noon and Jensen Ackles, respectively, due to scheduling reasons. It was McDermott and Hopkins who shared their comments on completing the Alec Baldwin movie, which is now in cinemas.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the actors opened up about finishing and releasing what's already a controversial movie. Even though Hutchins' family settled with production, and they're set to receive the film's eventual profits, the project has been met with divisive reactions from the public. Baldwin, as the actor who was manipulating the pistol containing a...

Alec Baldwin’s Tragedy-Stricken ‘Rust’ Debuts with a Subpar Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Rusthas become one of the most talked-about films in years due to the tragic events surrounding its filming. Four years after an accidental shooting left the film's cinematographer Halyna Hutchinsdead and director Joel Souza injured, the Western has finally been released courtesy of distributor Falling Forward Films. But viewers appear to be unmoved, as Rust's Rotten Tomatoes score is largely underwhelming.

At the time of this article's publication, Rust is sitting at a "rotten" critic's score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 21 reviews. However, it should also be noted that the film currently has no audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so there is a chance that audiences could end up liking it far more than the critics, as is the case with many films. The film is as "about as standard a Western as you can imagine, one that hits all the narrative beats and clichés expected of the genre,...

'Rust' Director Opens Up About Controversial Western & Alec Baldwin's Reality Show
Image
Rust director Joel Souza has shared his opinion of the TLC reality show The Baldwins, in which Alec Baldwin finds himself facing the cameras after the Rust shooting incident dramatically changed his life. Souza is not exactly friends with Baldwin today, and when asked if he saw The Baldwins when it premiered, the director candidly replied: "I think I was busy hitting myself in the face with a frying pan that night."

Souzais not enjoying the release of his latest film. Rust, the western thriller starring Baldwin, has finally seen the light of day, but the incident that took place during its production is still hard to process for most. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot in 2021 during a rehearsal in which Baldwin manipulated a pistol that contained a live round. After a dense judicial process, people were sent to jail, others had their charges dismissed, and production eventually resumed.

After On-Set Tragedy and Controversial Release, Alec Baldwin's Western Gets Unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Alec Baldwin's latest film, Rust, has just hit theaters. However, the film had been long in the making following the fatal shooting accident on set and the controversial release.

Rust has officially released in theaters on May 2, and it's already not a favorite. The Western, which was written and directed by Joel Souza, stars Baldwin in the leading role, besides his role as co-writer and producer. As Rust hit theaters, the movie debuted with an unfortunate score of 56% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which makes the movie considered "rotten." After this debut score, the number has begun to sink lower.

Rust had its world premiere last year on Nov. 20, 2024, at the Camerimage Festival in Poland, but to smaller audiences. The movie's release at the festival was also controversial, as Hutchins' former cinematography peers were wondering if premiering the movie was the right thing. Now, the movie is officially...

‘Rust’ Review: Defined by Tragedy, Alec Baldwin’s Cursed Western Offers Halyna Hutchins’ Story a Small but Necessary Sense of Closure
Image
When cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was inadvertently shot and killed by a live round on the set of “Rust” in October of 2021, it seemed unfathomable to me that production would ever be completed — let alone that I would be tasked with reviewing the finished product one day.

“Twilight Zone: The Movie” and “The Crow” were both released in spite of similar tragedies, but that was before the internet had so thoroughly flattened every film into the context of its own creation. The horror took on a life of its own when second assistant camerawoman Sarah Jones was fatally struck by a freight train on the first day of filming “Midnight Rider” in February 2014, and the Facebook group that crew members started to oppose resuming the shoot had swelled to more than 10,000 members by April of that year.

And what happened on the set of “Rust” caused such an instant firestorm that...

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Western 'Rust' Gets Middling Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
It's no secret that Rust is one of the most controversial projects to get completed in recent memory due to the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. However, despite that fact, critics have weighed in on the final product, and it seems to be a heavily divisive entry in the Western genre. It's hard to separate the behind-the-scenes tragedy from what is on-screen, but thankfully, it seems Hutchins' work is getting the bulk of the praise despite mixed reviews.

As of this writing, Rust debuted with a 50% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 20 reviews, which gives it a rotten label. The middling score is reflective of the deeply controversial nature of the film and everything surrounding it. Some critics were quick to point out the film's "bare-bones" plot, while others were impressed by the film's grim visual aesthetic. Meanwhile, MovieWeb's own review by Julian Roman praised Rust as...

‘Rust’ Is Both a Tribute and a Major Tragedy
Image
There is an alt-timeline in which Rust, writer-director Joel Souza’s pulpy and pathos-fueled Western, is just another tale of an outlaw in his autumn years. It’s simply the latest entry in a genre whose century-plus history is filled with similarly modest sagebrush epics. After a brief theatrical run, a slightly longer tenure on VOD and a lifetime of cable re-runs every Father’s Day, this frontier opus would trot off into the sunset as a footnote in Alec Baldwin’s post-30 Rock, pre-reality TV show career. You know,...

‘Rust’ Director Regrets Movie, Disses Alec Baldwin’s Reality Show
Image
After several years and enormous tragedy, the ill-fated Rust will finally be released on Friday.

And the Western’s writer-director, Joel Souza, has complicated thoughts on his creation — given the death of the movie’s cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was accidentally shot in 2021 by the film’s star, Alec Baldwin. After much debate, Souza and the cast and crew returned to finish the film.

“[Hutchins’ family] wanted it completed,” Souza told The Guardian. “I’d been repelled by the thought of going back, but [then] it started to appeal. And I couldn’t live with the idea of someone else doing it.”

That said, Souza quite naturally wishes he could go back in time and have never made the film. “Talk about the butterfly effect — I wish I never wrote the damn movie,” he said. “You think about the chain of events that started that morning [of the shooting]. Bad decision after bad decision was made.

Joel Souza Reflects on Finishing Rust as Film Opens in Limited Release
Halyna Hutchins
More than three years after an on-set shooting killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza, Rust is opening to the public. The film will be available through a limited theatrical release beginning May 2 and for digital purchase on platforms including Apple TV and Prime Video starting May 1.

Souza, who co-wrote the script and directed the film, has spoken about the decision to complete the project following the incident. “I’d been repelled by the thought of going back,” he said in an interview with The Guardian. “But now it started to appeal. And I couldn’t live with the idea of someone else doing it.”

The October 2021 shooting occurred when Alec Baldwin discharged a prop revolver that was believed to be safe. A live round was in the chamber, resulting in Hutchins’ death and Souza’s injury. Production was suspended, and the film’s future was uncertain until Hutchins’ family encouraged its completion.

‘Rust’ Review: Tragedy Hit The Set But Now Alec Baldwin’s Western Hits The Screen – What’s The Verdict?
Image
Rust is certainly one independently made movie that doesn’t need publicity.

The Western starring Alec Baldwin, who also came up with the story and serves as a producer, was hit by tragedy during production in October 2021 when Baldwin’s prop gun discharged during a rehearsal, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and also injuring director-screenwriter Joel Souza. Production on the film halted immediately and finally resumed in April 2023. Legal cases involving Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, both charged with manslaughter, ended with Baldwin’s case being dismissed and Gutierrez-Reed found guilty.

The events of this tragedy made headlines around the globe and certainly raised doubts that the film itself would be finished, let alone see the light of day. In the end it was decided that to honor Hutchins’ final work the film would be completed, no profits would be shared by the original producers, and Hutchins’ widower Matthew Hutchins would...

‘Rust’ Review: Alec Baldwin Leads a Competent but Uninspired Western Haunted by Death and Scandal
Image
In another timeline, Joel Souza’s Rust would come and go with mild fanfare and maybe some critical praise. The film follows a 13 year-old boy (Patrick Scott McDermott) who runs from the law — he’s been sentenced to death after accidentally shooting a local rancher — with his estranged grandfather (Alec Baldwin). It’s a no-frills Western, a classic story of cowboys and outlaws that revels in gorgeous scenery and the Puritanical moral dilemmas foundational to much of this nation’s mythology.

But Rust is a more fraught cultural product. Four years ago, Baldwin, who co-wrote as well as produced the film, accidentally discharged a weapon he thought only had blanks. A live round was in the chamber, and the bullet fatally wounded cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and also hit Souza. What followed was a dramatic, closely reported story that revealed on-set negligence and raised questions about industry practices around gun safety.

‘Rust’ Director Says He Didn’t Watch Alec Baldwin’s Reality Show: ‘I Think I Was Busy Hitting Myself in the Face With a Frying Pan That Night’
Image
“Rust” director Joel Souza says he couldn’t have imagined anyone else completing the Western movie after the on-set accident that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins when Alec Baldwin’s gun accidentally discharged, also injuring Souza. Three and a half years later, the movie is finally opening in theaters Friday.

Souza told the Guardian that when he first considered finishing the film, “I’d been repelled by the thought of going back, but now it started to appeal. And I couldn’t live with the idea of someone else doing it.” But Hutchins’ family wanted to honor her by having the film with her final work completed, so he agreed to complete the Western.

It wasn’t easy returning to the set, Souza said: “I was a mess going in and a mess coming out. The crew carried me through. My family carried me through. Emotionally, I was all over the map.

‘I wish I’d never written that damn movie’: Rust director Joel Souza on finishing his film after the fatal on-set shooting
Halyna Hutchins
He was hit by the same bullet that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The film-maker talks about his hopes for his western, his complicated feelings towards star Alec Baldwin – and why the industry hasn’t learned

Joel Souza never liked guns. “I didn’t grow up around them and I don’t like the culture,” says the grey-haired 51-year-old film-maker sitting at a desk at his home in Pleasanton, California. “Guns make me recoil. The idea of touching one, picking one up, I find very off-putting.”

In October 2021 he was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on the set of his sixth feature, the western Rust, when a gun being held by the film’s star, Alec Baldwin, was discharged accidentally during rehearsals. The weapon should have been loaded with blanks but a live round had found its way into the chamber. The movie’s Ukrainian cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally wounded.

In Rust, a boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following their parents' deaths in 1880s Kansas, ends up on the run with his long-estranged grandfather after he is sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher. Rust Trailer Reveals First Footage From Alec Baldwin's Controversial Western
Image
It's difficult to know how to feel about the potential release of Joel Souza's "Rust." This is the independently produced Western that became a major news story in 2021 when a .45 Colt revolver brandished by star Alec Baldwin -- who continues to claim he did not pull the trigger, hence the bizarre wording here -- fired a live round directly through the chest of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and into Souza's shoulder. The set's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was ultimately found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for her negligence in loading the weapon. Meanwhile, involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin were dismissed with prejudice by New Mexico Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer.

Principal photography on "Rust" was eventually completed in 2023. This delay caused cast members Brady Noon and Jensen Ackles to drop out of the movie, but Souza and company dragged the film across the finish line and screened it at the Camerimage film...

‘Rust’ Trailer Reveals First Footage From Alec Baldwin Film Ahead of May Release
Image
The trailer for Alec Baldwin’s “Rust” dropped on Wednesday, three and a half years after the on-set shooting incident that left cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead and director Joel Souza injured.

Since this is a Western, the clip features multiple shooting scenes despite the real-life tragedy. People was first to premiere the trailer.

As seen at the end of the video, Hutchins’ widower Matthew Hutchins gets an executive producer credit, which was a stipulation in her family dropping their initial wrongful death lawsuit. Baldwin is also a producer on the movie and gets a story by credit alongside writer/director Souza.

According to the logline, “In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico. ‘Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna’ Review: A Fascinating Probe Into the Death of Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins
Image
During my interview a while back with a director of small-budget Westerns, he explained to me that if you keep your costs down low enough and, better still, cast a recognizable character actor or country music star — not a superstar, but someone recognizable — to promote in packaging and advertising, you could turn a profit just on DVD and Blu-ray sales. “You do it right,” he said, “and you make your money back from Redbox and big-box stores. You do it wrong — you get ‘Rust.’”

It’s a theory that might seem dated today — more than likely, that director now relies heavily if not exclusively on sales to streaming platforms — but the industrial-strength pressure to pinch pennies and stretch dollars continues apace for indie genre filmmakers. As director Rachel Mason makes abundantly clear in her exceptional Hulu documentary “Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna,” such measures can have fatal consequences.

Can a New ‘Rust’ Doc Bring Closure to the Death of Halyna Hutchins?
Image
Today, the anticipated new documentary about the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western “Rust” premieres on Hulu. For all the reporting and very public court cases searching for who was culpable in actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shooting Hutchins during filming with what he believed to be a prop gun, what distinguishes “Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna Hutchins” is access.

With the documentary being directed by Hutchins’ close friend Rachel Mason (“Circus of Books”) and originating with the cinematographer’s widow Matt Hutchins, who is an executive producer on the film, those involved with the “Rust” production and the subsequent court cases felt free to speak openly on camera.

With the exception of Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the latter of whom was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, Mason received unfettered access from the entire...

Image
Production on the film Rust was suspended after Alec Baldwin accidentally fired a prop gun with live rounds and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during production in October 2021. The incident sparked various lawsuits, leaving the status of the movie in question. But did production ever resume on the western film, and did the movie ever actually come out? TV Insider rounded up everything you need to know below ahead of the documentary Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna streaming on Hulu on March 11. Did the movie Rust ever come out? The movie was released in November 2024 at the EnergaCamerimage festival in Poland, and director Joel Souza said in March that it will be available to viewers at home in the months ahead. First Look Images of 'Rust' Reveal Controversial Alec Baldwin Western
Image
Nearly four years after the accidental shooting incident that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the Alec Baldwin-starring Rust will soon hit screens in a limited theatrical run followed by a home release sometime in the coming months, according to the film's director Joel Souza. With an official release date on the horizon, Souza sat down for an interview with Vanity Fair, who also published a series of exclusive first-look stills from Rust.

In the interview, Souza, who was also injured in the shooting incident, revealed that he struggled with whether to finish Rust, but he ultimately felt it was what Hutchins would have wanted.

"We worked very closely together. The work she was doing was her best work, and for it to just vanish... I don't expect people to necessarily all agree or understand, but every fiber of my being just tells me that I can't let that disappear. It's...

Tense exchange at ‘Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna’ screening questions documentary’s direction: ‘I hoped it might have a little more Halyna’
Image
What was supposed to be a celebratory kickoff event for the new Hulu documentary Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna devolved into a tense confrontation on Tuesday night.

Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot Oct. 21, 2021 on the New Mexico set of Rust when star Alec Baldwin's prop gun discharged a live round. The bullet passed through the shoulder of director Joel Souza and then struck Hutchins, who was working as a cinematographer on the Western.

The documentary directed by Rachel Mason investigates the safety lapses that led to the horrific accident that killed her friend. Following the screening in front of a packed audience at the Silver Screen Theater in the Pacific Design Center, moderator Steve Chiotekis hosted a Q&a panel featuring Mason, producer Julee Metz, and Souza.

Although he was interviewed for Mason's film, Souza had no hand in making the documentary. He expressed frustration that...

A Tense ‘Rust’ Doc Screening Reveals the Painful Evolution of a Film About Dead Cinematographer
Image
A tense Q&a session on Tuesday night at an FYC screening of a new documentary about late Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins suggests the film underwent substantial changes in tone and content from the filmmakers’ original intent.

Ever since Hutchins died on the 2021 set of the indie Western, the Ukraine-born cinematographer has slipped into the background, as the sprawling investigation into her accidental shooting death and the high-profile trials of Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have claimed the spotlight in news coverage.

The documentary, Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna Hutchins, which will premiere on Hulu March 11, seemed like it might push Hutchins back into the center of the frame. Made by Hutchins’ close friends, Circus of Books and An Update on Our Family director Rachel Mason and producer Julee Metz, and executive produced by her widower, Matthew Hutchins, the doc had extraordinary levels of access. Mason...

‘Last Take’ Trailer Examines Human Toll of Halyna Hutchins’ Death on ‘Rust’ Set
Image
It was a story that shook Hollywood: A scene gone wrong on an independent film killed a rising cinematographer, with a well-known star holding the prop gun that fired the fatal bullet.

Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna will feature emotional conversations with Rust director Joel Souza, camera assistant Lane Luper, costume designer Terese Davis and the film’s new cinematographer Bianca Cline talking about the day of Hutchins’ death and the aftermath, the film’s first trailer demonstrated on Monday.

The trailer features police bodycam footage from the investigation of the death, news coverage of the story and what appears to be behind-the-scenes video from Rust. “What people really wanted from this is entertainment,...

Forget ‘The French Connection’ — the Best Chase Scene in American Movies Belongs to ‘Hollywood Homicide’
Image
Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from wrongheaded to the correct opinion.

What’s the greatest chase scene in American movies? One could easily make a convincing argument for the lengthy action sequence that anchors Buster Keaton’s “The General,” or for the kinetic urban set pieces of “Bullitt” and “The French Connection.” Movies like “Duel,” “The Driver,” and “Speed” are essentially feature-length chases broken up by occasional dialogue sequences, and for sheer scale, the final act of “The Blues Brothers” is tough to beat.

One movie that doesn’t get mentioned in this company but should is Ron Shelton’s 2003 action-comedy “Hollywood Homicide,” a film that...

Bruce Willis Takes Pride In One Of His Most Notorious Flops
Image
Prior to its release in 1991, there was every reason to believe that Michael Lehmann's heist comedy "Hudson Hawk" would be a hit. It was written by star screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who had already had gigantic success with film like "48 Hrs.," "Commando," "Jumping Jack Flash," and "The Running Man." His biggest smash was "Die Hard" in 1988, and he was tapped to write the sequel two years later. "Hudson Hawk" would re-team de Souza with "Die Hard" star Bruce Willis, and the film would boast performances from Danny Aiello, fresh from "Moonstruck," as well as James Coburn, Richard E. Grant, Sandra Bernhard, and Andie MacDowell. Lehmann, meanwhile, also had a big cult success in 1988 with "Heathers." Never mind that his bonkers mutant-bug movie "Meet the Applegates" bombed in 1990. The sensibility was there.

"Hudson Hawk" is an odd duck. Willis plays the titular cat burglar, freshly released from prison,...

Alec Baldwin Is Done with the 'Rust' Manslaughter Shooting Case
Image
Alec Baldwin will no longer face involuntary manslaughter charges related to the 2021 accidental killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, Variety reports. On December 23, 2024, special prosecutor Kari Morrissey announced that she was dropping her appeal of a judge's previous dismissal of the case.

Baldwin went to trial in July 2024. The prosecution intended to prove that the actor had been reckless and criminally negligent when he fired a gun while preparing for a scene on set. The bullet struck Hutchins in the chest and also injured director Joel Souza. Three days into the trial, however, the charges against Baldwin were dropped by Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, who criticized Morissey's handling of the case, calling it "so near to bad faith as to show signs of scorching."

Specifically, Morrissey failed to introduce key evidence — a cache of bullets — that Baldwin's lawyers, Alex Spiro and Luke Nikas, argued would help his case.

Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust’ Manslaughter Case Finally Over As Appeal Withdrawn By Prosecutor – Update
Image
Updated with appeal withdrawn: More than three years after Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed by a bullet from Alec Baldwin’s gun on the New Mexico set of the indie Western, the involuntary manslaughter criminal case against the actor has been put to rest.

A month after Special Prosecutor Karri Morrissey tried to revive the matter, which had been dismissed just a few days into the trial this summer over suppressed evidence, the office of New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez decided Monday not to “pursue the appeal of behalf of the prosecution.”

Not long afterwards, Morrissey dropped her efforts to overturn Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer’s tossing of the case, Deadline has confirmed.

“Today’s decision to dismiss the appeal is the final vindication of what Alec Baldwin and his attorneys have said from the beginning—this was an unspeakable tragedy but Alec Baldwin committed no crime,” said...

Image
What Did Rust Director Joel Souza Say About People Who Will Avoid Watching The Film? (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Rust director Joel Souza is hopeful that people will “give it [the movie] a chance.” The director recently addressed those who are reluctant to watch the film three years following cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ death in an accidental on-set shooting in 2021.

“If people don’t want to watch this movie, for any reason, they certainly don’t need to and there’s no hard feelings from me,” Souza told The Hollywood Reporter. “But what I hope is that people give it...
