The most prestigious film festival in the world has officially commenced at the French Riviera with 2024 being a significant year for Indian cinema. Seven Indian films have been chosen to be screened at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, with Payal Kapadia-directorial leading the line.

The Malayalam film “All We Imagine as Light” broke the jinx as it became the first Indian cinema in three decades to compete at the festival’s main segment, Palme d’Or. Shaji N. Karun’s 1994 film “Swaham” was the last film to compete in this category.

Though not the Palme d’Or, several other Indian productions have won big in these 30 years and brought glory to the Indian cinema.

‘Tarla’ (2023) Review: Huma Qureshi Is The Star Of This Run-Of-The-Mill Film
Image
The story of India’s first home chef is fascinating and should be brimming with food. We don’t get served any platters, I’m afraid! For those of us who didn’t have the chance to see her become a force to be reckoned with in real-time, the film Tarla should’ve given us some real insight into her food and life. While to the uninitiated, the story may come across as a heartwarming tale of endurance and a feel-good film, it tells a very limited tale, ending much before the real story began. Personally, I looked up the chef after watching the film because I remembered hearing her name but not much more. When I saw that she became an entrepreneur in the process of becoming one of India’s most revered home chefs, I was disheartened not to have seen that side of things in the film.

Bharati Achrekar: ‘Wagle Ki Duniya’ has always been about values and it will never change
Image
Excerpt from an interview with Bharti Achrekar who plays Radhika Wagle in Sony Sab’s Wagle Ki Duniya – Nayi Peedhi Naye Kissey

How does it feel to be back with Wagle Ki Duniya this time on Sony Sab?

I am thrilled because it has been 33 years now since the show was first telecasted in 1988. We were satisfied that the show had a wonderful run and nobody wanted to risk Rk Laxman’s writing anymore. But I was pleasantly surprised when Jd Majethia approached me with his idea and story for the new Wagle Ki Duniya – Nayi Peedhi Naye Kissey. I was excited because I had already seen his work and I was convinced with the quality of shows he has created so far. I knew he would be able to do a great job with Wagle Ki Duniya.

What made you accept the show? Did you have any apprehensions?

Movie Review | Coolie No 1: Back to the 90s entertainment
Image
David Dhawan is not called the director of the masses no. 1 for nothing. His ‘no. 1’ series back in the 90’s have had been hits with the hero of masala no brainers – Govinda. This 25th December, it’s like celebrating the 25th anniversary of the comedy Coolie No 1 with its new-wine-in-old-bottle remake of the same name. The cast headlined with the namesake Govinda of current times – Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan supported by Paresh Rawal, Jaaved Jaffery and Sahil Vaid.

Coolie No 1 is strictly for the audience who enjoy no-brainer potboiler entertainers. Produced by Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Films, the movie was slated to be released earlier this year in May but had to be postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic so much so that it finally skipped the theatres and released on Amazon Prime Video.

Don’t miss Amitabh Bachchan’s very special appearance as coolie in a very special sequence blessing Varun Dhawan,...

Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hai: Shubhangi Atre finds comedy easier than high-on-drama roles
Johnny Walker
She is loved unconditionally by her fans for playing one of the most loved characters on Indian television.

Think of Angoori bhabhi from producers Binaifer Kohli and Sanjay Kohli's show Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hai! and actor Shubhangi Atre's face pops up.

The talented actor has been playing the character for almost four years and making people laugh. While everyone feels that comedy is a very tough game, Shubhangi feels more comfortable in making people laugh.

Doing comedy shows is more difficult than regular shows. Comment.

I feel that crying is difficult and doing comedy is easier for me. I find it easier and I have been a little funny from childhood. I wonder how I will ever get back to doing that in daily soaps. But I do love emotional scenes also. It is tough to make people laugh but if the content is good and writing and scripting is good,...

Yours Truly Movie Review: A sincere take on loneliness
The only cure to old age is death. The only remedy to loneliness during old age is memories, at least for some. Others who prefer to live in the here-and-now may choose to seek reluctant company. There are stories of how veteran actress Nadira would bribe her guests to stay a little longer with drinks.

Violet Stoneham, the character that Jennifer Kapoor played in Aparna Sen's "36 Chowringhee Lane" allowed a young couple to use her apartment for sex, just so that she would be in company. Creaky bed notwithstanding.

There is a couple making noisy love in "Yours Truly", though their sounds of passion sound fairly phoney, as though they were faking it just to make the ageing protagonist feel lonelier.

In Yours Truly, Soni Razdan playing an autumnal Bengali woman Mithi Kumar in Kolkata, is a direct descendent of Violet Stoneham, though far less intimidated by her solitude.

Poster Boyz Is Fun In A Lowbrow Way
Starring Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Shreyas Talpde

Directed by Shreyas Talpade

If you looking for some naughty fun this weekend you might want to try out this wacky piece of big-screen chortle… provided you can bear with the brainless bacchanalia sheathed in a sexual innocence that the protagonists are able to convey without straining at their collecting leash.

For a film about family planning and vasectomy there is a remarkable absence of vulgarity and double meaning in the conversations. The characters speak to each other loudly and irrelevantly. They don’t know any better.

Sunny and Bobby Deol are in the fun zone doing lowbrow comedy with disarming relish. Shreyas Talpade, with his redoubtable comic timing, joins the Deol brothers. The result is boisterous humour, not all of it funny or even coherent, I am afraid. In fact some of the gags overstay their welcome like bin bulaye mehmaan.

Pari (Hetal Gada), 10, and her younger brother, Chotu (Krrish Chhabria), 8, live with their aunt and uncle after their parents were killed in an accident. Chotu is blind – though we discover as the film unpeels itself that Chotu wasn’t always blind, that he became that way after becoming ill after being badly nourished, something which could have been prevented. Pari, though, promises her brother that he will regain his eyesight in time for his ninth birthday, that they will see rainbows when he finally can see again. When she sees a poster of her idol, Shah Rukh Khan, encouraging people to donate their eyes, Pari decides to write to him, sure in the belief that he will help Chotu regain his sight.

The village postmaster is indulgent, at first, sending a few of Pari’s letters on. But then he tells Pari’s uncle that enough is enough, he must talk to Pari,...

Sundance Film Fesival 2014 Midnight Movie Lineup
The Sundance Institute has released the movie line-up for their Spotlight, Midnight and Sundance Kids selections for The Sundance Film Festival 2014. The Midnight selection has always been my favorite because its always packed with really crazy, fun, and messed up films. It looks like another great collection of films this next year! They include films such as Cooties with Elijah Wood, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead and more. Sundance Kids is a new addition this year which, if you couldn't tell, is meant for younger audiences.

The Festival takes place January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah, and we will be there to cover as many of the films as humanly possible. Director of Programming, Trevor Groth, had this to say in a statement.

“The films in the sections announced today round out our 2014 Sundance Film Festival program and further reflect the depth and...

Proposition 8: Jeremy Saulnier & Richard Ayoade Among Sundance Spotlight Films
Sundance’s Spotlight section works as a sampling of quality items that dug their knees in the sand of the Croisette, or hit the asphalt payment in Toronto. It’s an acknowledgment of U.S film distributors (in this case: Radius-twc, Magnolia, Music Box Films, A24, Sony Pictures Classics, Strand Releasing) who’ve all contributed to my favorite disease – one that is called cinephilia. It’s also a look into 2014 – which is when they’ll be unveiled theatrically. And finally, it’s a way in which to receive the extended Sundance family once again such as Richard Ayoade (preemed his debut feautre here – Submarine) and Jeremy Saulnier (was at the fest as a cinematographer for Matthew Porterfield’s I Used to Be Darker). Here are the eight selections:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy headline Sundance sections
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
When Sundance announced the films in competition for the 2014 festival yesterday, its organizers noted that they were impressed by the caliber of cinematic artistry — mostly due to technology — that freed up filmmakers to experiment with different genres. No category of the festival is more rooted in genre than Park City at Midnight, the late-night section that specializes in horror and the supernatural, and this year’s slate has several potential breakouts. “The Midnight lineup came together in a way that is about the strongest group we’ve ever had, top to bottom,” says Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming.

Tommy Wirkola
Tommy Wirkola’s Dead Snow sequel, Adam Wingard’s The Guest and Xyz Films’ Killers from The Mo Brothers are among the Park City At Midnight line-up as festival heads also unveiled Spotlight selections and the inaugural Sundance Kids section on December 5.

The Sundance Kids strand is programmed in cooperation with Utah children and youth festival Tumbleweeds, and will premiere Ernest And Celestine starring Forest Whitaker and Lauren Bacall and Zip & Zap And The Marble Gang with Javier Gutiérrez.

“The films in the sections announced today round out our 2014 Sundance Film Festival programme and further reflect the depth and diversity of modern independent film-making that will satisfy everyone from festival fledglings to fanatics,” said director of programming Trevor Groth.

The Sundance Film Festival is set to run from January 16-26 2014 in Utah. Organisers will showcase 117 feature selections, of which 96 are world premieres, representing 37 countries and 53 first-time film-makers, including 34 in competition.

Tiff Special Review: The Lunchbox (dir. Ritesh Batra, 2013)
“The 5,000 or so dabbawalas in the city have an astounding service record. Every working day they transport more than 130,000 lunch boxes throughout Mumbai, the world’s fourth-most-populous city. That entails conducting upwards of 260,000 transactions in six hours each day, six days a week, 52 weeks a year (minus holidays), but mistakes are extremely rare.”

- Stefan Thomke, Harvard Business Review, Nov. 1, 2012

It’s one of those “extremely rare” mistakes that Stefan Thomke writes about that results in the dabba (lunchbox) that Ila (Nimrat Kaur) has prepared for her husband landing on the desk of Saajan (Irrfan Khan). Ila is a housewife whose busy husband ignores her, prompting her to take the advice of the upstairs Auntie to spice up their relationship by spicing up the food she puts in his dabba; Saajan is a widowed, middle-aged government claims adjuster whose weariness and sadness envelop him. When Ila realizes that the special...
