BruceFest 2022 Recap: A Groovy Three-Day Extravaganza with Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi
Image
Nestled at 7,800 feet above sea level in Estes Park, Colorado, The Stanley Hotel sits in the snowy mountains with an air of regality. This is where BruceFest, the definitive Bruce Campbell film festival, returned for its second year from Dec 1st-3rd. This time around, it featured the exciting addition of fellow horror icon Ted Raimi as co-host of honor.

Tickets were sold as three-day passes for access to events in various buildings on the hotel grounds for a blend of immersive Arg, screenings, trivia, tabletop games and prop exhibits. Attendees referred to the Eventzee app for schedule updates and participated in challenges that would award a special prize to the highest scorer. Ways to up your points included self taped submissions of Campbell impressions, photos of swag you brought to get signed, answering S-Mart questions and then some. This also tracked your progress on the scavenger hunt, where you...

Is anyone else old enough to remember Three O’Clock High? You are? Well you might get a feeling of deja-vu watching Fist Fight. Which follows a very similar storyline, only this time it’s teachers planning to fight Not the students!

Set on the last day of the year, Fist Fight sees mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Day) trying his best to keep it together amidst senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that put jobs on the line. Things go from bad to worse when he accidentally crosses his much tougher and deeply feared colleague, Ron Strickland (Ice Cube), who challenges Campbell to an old-fashioned throw down after school. Fist Fight review - crass comedy
A bullying mob mentality informs this far-fetched tale of a fight between American high school teachers

Charlie Day deploys his most irritating strangulated voice and twitchy performance as a high-school English teacher who finds himself challenged to a fight by a fellow teacher (Ice Cube) in this crass, painfully overstated comedy. Day plays Andy Campbell, a meek husband and soon-to-be father who understandably fails to cover up the fact that his colleague smashed up a desk with a fire axe. With its bullying mob mentality and inexplicable character motivation, this is film-making for people who watch YouTube clips of happy-slapping for kicks.

Fist Fight Review
Author: Stefan Pape

The premise to Richie Keen’s Fist Fight is simple, to a point where it’s hard to fathom quite how it’s sustained a feature length narrative. It’s, quite literally, about two men having a fight, and in the most contrived way imaginable that is stretched out across 90 painfully unfunny minutes, with the one paramount, lone joke being that of teachers acting more immaturely than the students they educate. And believe me, it gets tedious pretty quickly.

Charlie Day plays Andy Campbell, a beleaguered high school teacher who remains perpetually bemused, and almost impressed, with the sheer level of irresponsibility in the pranks pulled by his students. Fearing his job may be on the line, and with a pregnant wife at home, life is somewhat stressful – and it’s made even more so when he finds himself in the principle’s office next to the...

Matt Damon in The Great Wall (2016)
Lego Batman Wins Weekend #2 at the Box Office with $34.2M
Matt Damon in The Great Wall (2016)
After easily conquering highly-anticipated sequels Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick 2, Warner Bros.' animated spin-off Lego Batman Movie faced three newcomers in its second weekend at the box office. The animated spin-off will go up against Universal's big budget action epic The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, Warner Bros.' comedy Fist Fight starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day and 20th Century Fox's A Cure For Wellness starring Dane DeHaan. As expected, The Lego Batman Movie retained its spot atop the box office with a better than expected $34.2 million

While there are certainly many factors that lead to The Lego Batman Movie staying on top of the box office, one of these factors is that it is still playing in hundreds of more theaters than any of these newcomers. The Lego Batman Movie debuted in 4,088 theaters last weekend, which, according to Box Office Mojo, remained unchanged this weekend. reporting...

Fist Fight – Review
A showdown’s a’ comin’! Not on the main street of Dodge City, but at the multiplex once again. The final throw down between the hero and villain has been a staple of cinema since its earliest days, mainly in action films and primarily the western. There have been countless screen versions of that infamous incident , the gunfight at the O.K. Corral (the most famous being the Kirk Douglas/Burt Lancaster 1950’s classic) . This most likely inspired many other “oaters”, the most celebrated being the iconic 1952 High Noon (which garnered an Oscar for star Gary Cooper). It’s set in real-time as the clock ticks to 12, while Will Kane readies himself for the arrival of the Miller gang. We’ve seen this plot used in many other genres, providing extra excitement to the final acts of every movie hero’s exploits from Rocky to Bond to Batman. But it...

Ice Cube, Charlie Day, Christina Hendricks, Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, and Kumail Nanjiani in Fist Fight (2017)
‘Fist Fight’ Review: An Empty, 90-Minute R-Rated Sitcom Episode Starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day
Ice Cube, Charlie Day, Christina Hendricks, Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, and Kumail Nanjiani in Fist Fight (2017)
One of the greatest services a comedy can provide is to let its performers be unbridled. Give talented actors the chance to play to their purest strengths and you’re already well on your way to an entertaining time at the movies. The biggest risk with that move is that without reins on either story or performer, things can get out of hand in a hurry. “Fist Fight,” the latest buddy comedy starring Charlie Day and Ice Cube, stands firmly on the other side of that divide. Even though it’s able to play to some of the strengths of its central characters, by the time the film arrives at its advertised confrontation, the story limps along when it should be hard-charging.

From the movie’s outset, Andy Campbell (Day) and Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) are set up as convenient opposites. Campbell is an English teacher, pottering around high school hallways,...

Review: ‘Fist Fight’ is Mindless, Crude, and Thoroughly Funny
It’s hard to believe that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been on the air for twelve years now, but it’s still going strong. While the show opened doors for the entire quartet of relative unknowns, Charlie Day has been the one who’s leveraged his rising star into a pretty prolific film career, generally as the confused, manic comic relief. He fills that role on the show too, albeit at a level of imbecilic illiteracy that’s hard to fathom without watching yourself. But in 2015, ten years after the comedy’s debut, a different side of Charlie was shown. The episode was “Charlie Work” and it allowed Day to flip that energy into no-nonsense frustration and uncharacteristic productivity. He was confident, assertive, and coherent—and funnier as a result.

I wonder if it was fate then that Day would sign onto Fist Fight four months after...

The Weekend Warrior 2/17/17: Fist Fight, The Great Wall, A Cure for Wellness
Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

The Lego Batman Movie won the weekend as expected, but not with nearly as much money as I had predicted, not besting the opening of The Lego Movie as expected, but instead ending up with a reasonable and not so bad $53 million. Fifty Shades Darker proved that the audience for movies based on the popular books was still great enough for it to win Friday with $21 million (to Lego Batman’s $15 million) and end up second for the weekend with a strong $46.6 million. That was still almost $40 million less than the opening of the previous movie Fifty Shades of Grey, but the sequel also didn’t have the benefits of Valentine’s Day and a four-day holiday. Coming in...

Matt Damon in The Great Wall (2016)
Can The Great Wall Overtake Lego Batman at the Box Office?
Matt Damon in The Great Wall (2016)
After easily conquering highly-anticipated sequels Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick 2, Lego Batman Movie has its sights set on three more newcomers hitting theaters this weekend, to retain its box office crown. We're predicting that, at least for this weekend, The Lego Batman Movie finds a way to stay on top at the box office, with a projected $29.6 million.

One reason that The Lego Batman Movie will likely stay on top is because it will still be playing in hundreds of more theaters than any of these newcomers. The Lego Batman Movie debuted in 4,088 theaters last weekend, a number that will likely remain unchanged this Friday, with Box Office...

Hilarious Red-Band Trailer for Fist Fight Shows Ice Cube Ready to Fight Charlie Day
Ice Cube is ready to beat the shit out of Charlie Day in the new red-band trailer for Fist Fight. This looks hilarious, and it's one one of the few comedies that I'm actually excited about seeing this year. I have no idea if it will do well or if there's a big audience out there looking forward to seeing it, and it probably won't appeal to everyone, but I'm a fan of Day, Cube, and the rest of the cast. I just think it will be a crazy, silly, and entertaining comedy. The movie was directed by Richie Keen (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and this is the synopsis:

On the last day of the year, mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Day) is trying his best to keep it together amidst senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that put jobs on the line. But...

The Gloves Are Off In Red Band Trailer For New Line’s Fist Fight
High school, the best years of your life – at least, that’s what nostalgic adults would have you believe, as they look back on their days in education through rose-tinted glasses. But in New Line’s imminent comedy Fist Fight, high school is transformed into a gladiatorial arena in which Charlie Day and Ice Cube lock horns.

Pegged for release on February 17th, New Line has today unleashed the bonkers red band trailer for Richie Keen’s (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) caper, which sees a seemingly innocuous rivalry bubble over into a full-blown war. Once the battle lines are drawn, Charlie Day’s mild-mannered English teacher Andy Campbell finds himself avoiding Ice Cube’s Ron Strickland at all costs, with the latter out to enact his revenge after Campbell’s complacencies lead to him getting the sack.

Cue the ridiculously over-the-top battle sequence involving horses trotting through the...

Ice Cube and Charlie Day Go Head to Head in New Fist Fight Trailer
Fist Fight has one of the simplest, most boiled down premises I've seen in a long time: a tough teacher wants to fight a wimpy teacher after school. It's funny because they're the adults, guys! They're supposed to be the responsible ones! But there's nothing responsible about tying a teacher's leg to a horse and having the horse drag him through the hallways...it's hilarious, sure, but nowhere near responsible. In fact, more than anything else, that single moment is what has me interested in this movie at all — it's an inventive, ridiculous bit of physical comedy that seems to be a step above, oh, I don't know, Seth Rogen landing on an airbag in the Neighbors movies or whatever American comedies are trying to pass off as "crazy" unexpected moments these days.

Fist Fight stars Ice Cube, Charlie Day, Christina Hendricks, Jillian Bell, Kumail Nanjiani, Tracy Morgan, and more,...

Fist Fight Trailer #2: Ice Cube and Charlie Day Throw Down
Ice Cube, Charlie Day, Christina Hendricks, Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, and Kumail Nanjiani in Fist Fight (2017)
Back in September, just as the school year was getting started, Warner Bros. debuted the first trailer for the upcoming comedy Fist Fight, which hits theaters February 17, 2017. Fist Fight stars Ice Cube and Charlie Day as two high school teachers prepared to solve their differences the hard way. Today, we have the second trailer with even more new footage of what could be a huge comedy hit early next year, along with the new poster. This raucuous show down will have plenty of competition standing in its way, though.

Fist Fight will go up against Universal's action-adventure The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, 20th Century Fox's thriller A Cure For Wellness, starring Dane DeHaan and Sony's horror film Patient Zero, starring Natalie Dormer. It will also open one week after a trio of highly-anticipated movies arrive on February 10, 2017, Universals' Fifty Shades Darker, Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter Two and Warner Bros.

Watch Ice Cube, Charlie Day Spar in 'Fist Fight' Trailer
Ice Cube
Most everyone has witnessed fights break out while in school, but teachers are supposed to potentially keep the peace. However, that's not the case in the forthcoming Fist Fight, where teachers played by Ice Cube and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Charlie Day gear up to kick each other's asses in what's built up in the trailer to be an epic battle at the school where they both teach.

"Ali vs. Frazier," "2Pac vs. Biggie," "Batman vs. Superman" flash across the screen in the trailer clip. That's clearly hyperbole judging from the video,...

Ice Cube And Charlie Day Become Embroiled In A Fist Fight In First Trailer For High School Comedy
Over the summer months, HBO rolled out its gleefully dark comedy series Vice Principals, pitting Danny McBride and Jody Hill against one another in a bid for supremacy. It fared relatively well with critics, even nabbing a second season renewal at the network. But now, it’s Ice Cube and Charlie Day’s turn to go a few rounds for Fist Fight, an upcoming high school comedy that hails from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia director Richie Keen.

Keen, who has arguably extracted the very best from Charlie Day across his beloved sitcom, spoke to USA Today regarding his move over to the big screen, and how Fist Fight can be viewed as a more adult-oriented spin on ’80s cult hit Three O’Clock High. There’s more to this drama than a wildly over-the-top scuffle, though, with Keen revealing that, “the truth of the matter is at this...

Fist Fight Trailer: Ice Cube Wants to Brawl With Charlie Day
Here's the first trailer for Fist Fight, a new movie that stars the unlikely combo of Ice Cube and Charlie Day. They play high school teachers, and for some reason, Cube wants to knock Day out in a fight after school. The whole trailer basically looks like a slight twist on that recent Will Ferrell movie Get Hard; this time, Day tries to learn what to do and how to fight from other faculty members while constantly making a fool of himself. It's a little cheesy, but it seems like the leads are well-cast for what they're being asked to do here. Let's hope the script is up to snuff.

With a solid supporting cast that includes Tracy Morgan, Kumail Nanjiani, Jillian Bell, Christina Hendricks, and more, this one could end up being pretty funny.

Fist Fight opens on February 17, 2017.

On the last day of the year, mild-mannered high school...

Ice Cube and Charlie Day Prepare For a ‘Fist Fight’ in First Trailer
If Vice Principals isn’t fulfilling your desire for high school-set hijinks amongst faculty, next year we’re getting Fist Fight, a new comedy from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia director Richie Keen. Continuing down the box-office-winning formula of teaming Ice Cube with someone who plays opposite his persona (this time Charlie Day), the first trailer has arrived.

The first trailer sets up the thinnest of premises, but with its varied cast, hopefully there’s a good amount of laughs come February. Also starring Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, Dean Norris, Christina Hendricks, Dennis Haysbert, Kumail Nanjiani, and JoAnna Garcia Swisher, check out the trailer and poster below.

On the last day of the year, mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Day) is trying his best to keep it together amidst senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that put jobs on the line. But things go from...

Coming Distractions: Charlie Day and Ice Cube get ready to rumble in the trailer for Fist Fight
Some movies are governed by such a potent premise that their logline titles tell you everything you need to know. Runaway Train. Castaway. Maniac Cop. Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo. Samuel Jackson is rumored to have signed on to Snakes On A Plane after hearing the title (that’s actually not true).

And so it is with Fist Fight. The trailer opens with a highly economical first second, juxtaposing a mad-as-hell schoolteacher Ice Cube against a scared-shitless schoolteacher Charlie Day—culminating in screaming and a foley-enhanced punch. Ushered in by the sweeping opening of Carl Orff’s overused cantana, Ice Cube’s Ron Strickland makes a quietly intimidating promise to colleague Andy Campbell (Day): “I’m gonna fight you.” And from there, the tempo of “Carmina Burana” escalates the unfolding insanity. The promise of adult fisticuffs causes jubilation among the student body, while unraveling their milquetoast English teacher (#teacherfight is...

Fist Fight First Look Has Charlie Day and Ice Cube Ready to Rumble
Charlie Day
New Line Cinema has released three photos from their upcoming comedy Fist Fight, which hits theaters on February 17, 2017. These images give us our first look at stars Ice Cube and Charlie Day, who play a pair of starkly different teachers who end up in an intense showdown on the last day of school. We also get much more insight on the story from director Richie Keen.

USA Today debuted these new photos, which also feature co-stars Jillian Bell and Tracy Morgan, in his first major movie role since the harrowing 2014 car crash that almost killed him. The site also spoke with Richie Keen, who previously worked with Charlie Day by directing 11 episodes of his hit FX series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and makes his feature directorial debut on this comedy. The director revealed that this story "felt like a rated-r John Hughes movie to me."

aGLIFF 2010 Daily Dispatch: The Weekend, or Juries and Parties and Bears, Oh My!
Take a look at this picture, it's a prime example of what makes aGLIFF and in fact every film festival in town work.  Pictured above (clockwise from upper left) are David Sweeney, Jenn Garrison, Jean Lauer, Andy Campbell, Michelle Faires and lastly actor Alex Di Dio from closing-night film BearCity. Together they represent the aGLIFF board, 2010 juries, volunteers, filmmakers, and the local film community on all levels.  If it looks like they're having fun, they are. It's been a long festival, but a very successful one with many sold-out or close to capacity screenings.

You've read Don's hilarious and enlightening dispatch from Saturday, but allow me to wrap up my weekend with you as well. I was able to make the doc The Real Anne Lister, an hour-long look at the life and diaries as seen by Britain's version of Ellen DeGeneres, Sue Perkins. It's as much a musing on...

DVD Releases: Trapped in the Insanitarium Asylum
It’s all about the traps this week. Check out what horror flicks are hitting DVD on Tuesday, July 15th, 2008...

Asylum (2008)

Directed by David R. Ellis

It seems all the madness surrounding Ellis’ last effort, Snakes on a Plane, popped something in his head and he decided the only way to follow it up would be with the most generic, bland, impotent kind of horror film. Enter Asylum, the story of a group of new kids at college who find out their new dorm is adjacent to the former stomping grounds of a doctor who got off on conducting experiments on kids their age. Lameness follows. Be sure to read our Asylum DVD review for more! Buy it here!

Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell (2007)

Directed by Kevin Wheatley & Jonny Gillette

How strange; I remember when this film first was getting festival play it was the talk of the...
