Say what you will about the British tabloids but they've always been pretty on point when it comes to Doctor Who gossip. As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, The Sun has run a story claiming that Ncuti Gatwa is indeed moving on from the series when the upcoming second season ends.
The trades said that was a possibility last year and, according to the site's sources, "Ncuti doesn’t want to be tied to the series beyond this and plans to relocate to Los Angeles with several Hollywood projects standing by for him."
"His team also see a lot of fan backlash from the series, and don’t want the perception of him still being The Doctor to get in the way of any future work," the insider alleges. "The show has been poorly managed in recent years and there’s a lot of people who’ve been working...

Two cosplayers create a first-time encounter between the Thirteenth Doctor and her Weeping Angel-self from Doctor Who season 13. Jodie Whittaker became the first female actor to play the Time Lord in 2017 following Peter Capaldi's departure from the role and portrayed the character for five years across three seasons and a number of holiday specials. In Whittaker's final full season, the Thirteenth Doctor had a fateful encounter with the Weeping Angels in "Village of the Angels," leading to a chilling cliffhanger.
As @thats.so.cosplay attended the Chicago Tardis convention, she joined forces with fellow Thirteenth Doctor cosplayer Katie Haynes for a short video featuring their fantastic renditions of the Time Lord. As the former stood in the all-too-familiar Weeping Angel pose while wearing her incredibly detailed cosplay, Haynes embodied the Time Lord and acted out Whittaker's character reacting to her transformed self. Since "The Church on Ruby Road" resurrected the tradition of the Doctor Who Christmas special in 2024, "Joy to the World" has continued to add to the category of episodes. Doctor Who's modern era began in 2005 when Russell T. Davies revived the show. Before then, there had only ever been one Christmas special, the First Doctor (William Hartnell) episode "The Feast of Steven", which aired on Christmas Day, 1965. 40 years later, David Tennant's Doctor Who debut, "The Christmas Invasion" established the annual tradition of the festive special, something which has been brought back by returning showrunner Russell T. Davies.
During the Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall era, the BBC took a different approach to the traditional Doctor Who Christmas special by releasing it on New Year's Day. Chris Chibnall's Dalek trilogy was far different in tone from both the overtly festive spectacle of Davies and the wintry melancholy of Steven Moffat.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas special, "Joy to the World."
"Joy to the World" adds a massive piece of canon into the Doctor Who universe that subtly explains one of the abilities of John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness. Although the story of the 2024 Christmas special sweeps aside its pivotal piece of sci-fi lore, the magnitude of the introduction and its impact on the larger universe can't be ignored. As one of the best Doctor Who companions not from present-day Earth, Jack brought something very interesting to the position, but his pre-installed backstory left some intriguing gaps. Thankfully, one of the more compelling blank spots has now been partially filled.
Barrowman played Jack during Russell T Davies' first stint as the Doctor Who showrunner, and he enjoyed a brief return to the role alongside Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor during the Chris Chibnall era. Perhaps most significantly,...

Despite rumors swirling for decades about a female Doctor happening in Doctor Who, the BBC avoided it until Jodie Whittaker's run as the Thirteenth Doctor. As the first female Doctor, Whittaker was failed by showrunner Chris Chibnall, whose controversial "Timeless Child" storyline drastically changed Doctor Who canon. Still, as the first woman to play the Doctor, Whittaker herself was praised for her fun, fresh take on the Doctor, her warm, lively personality bubbling through as one of the most empowering female TV characters of the decade. So to say the first run of a female Doctor was a mixed bag would be accurate.
That's not to say Doctor Who hasn't come close to a female regeneration - it has, a few times. But it never panned out, for various reasons, though arguably the real reason has never been given publicly. For a show that's as long-running as Doctor Who,...

Steven Moffat is one of only three showrunners to have been involved with Doctor Who since it was revived in 2005, but "Joy to the World" was not the best episode from the former showrunner in 2024. Doctor Who first began airing in 1963, and with that substantial legacy spanning more than 60 years, the show has seen countless writers come and go. However, in the modern era, there have only been three showrunners in the last 20 years helping to shape and guide the series.
Russell T Davies brought the series back in 2005, and he worked closely with a team of trusted writers to deliver episodes that saw the show come back from obscurity to the point of becoming a national treasure again in the UK. Then, Steven Moffat, another writer who worked under Rtd during that early revival era, stepped up as the showrunner, and with his considerable success working on both Doctor Who and Sherlock simultaneously,...

Doctor Who's "Joy to the World" belongs to a specific group of Christmas specials for an unfortunate reason, but the festive installment in 2025 can easily break away from the predictable trend. All the Doctor Who Christmas specials (and New Year specials under Chris Chibnall's reign) hold an interesting place in the show's timeline. Because they're one-off installments, they need to include high-paced action while also maintaining the spirit of the holidays. However, there's often a behind-the-scenes hurdle that needs to be overcome at the same time.
Although Doctor Who's classic era rarely acknowledged Christmas, the festival specials have been a big hallmark of the show since its 2005 revival. Doctor Who's modern era has taken the Doctor through several holiday tropes to varying degrees of success, but the person by his side can often be an unfamiliar face. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it does...

The new Doctor Who season 15 trailer teases the continuation of the Toymaker plot that's been a major part of Russell T. Davies' return as showrunner. When showrunner Russell T. Davies returned to helm a new (Disney-funded) era of Doctor Who, few expected the show to have a clear narrative throughline. But Davies soon revealed he planned to switch things up, with the 60th anniversary specials reintroducing the Toymaker, a godlike being from outside the universe itself.
The Toymaker was just the beginning. The Doctor accidentally made a way for mystical, godlike beings to enter the universe and wreak havoc, and Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor has gone up against dangerous creatures such as the Maestro and Sutekh. It's become clear the rules of the show have changed, and there have even been hints Unit - the Doctor's Earth-bound allies - is now concerned with the supernatural as much as they are with aliens.

There's a lot of debate among the "Doctor Who" fandom over which showrunner is the best at Christmas specials: Russell T. Davies or Steven Moffat (who ran seasons 5 through 10). The debate is made simpler by how showrunner Chris Chibnall (seasons 11-13) inexplicably decided to make New Year's Day specials instead, so this debate only comes down to Davies v Moffat. They both have different approaches to the format of a Christmas episode, so a lot of this comes down to simple taste.
Davies took a pretty dark approach. His first Christmas special, "The Christmas Invasion," revolved around aliens who tried to get one third of humanity to throw themselves off of buildings, and it ends on the surprisingly brutal note of the new Doctor killing Harriet Jones' political career after she blows the fleeing aliens up. The Doctor vs. Harriet dispute is a messy, bitter one with no clear answers...

Doctor Who has been through several formats over the years, from the classic era that began in 1963, to the revived era that saw the show reach its peak popularity, and now to the rebooted era streaming all over the world. However, one thing thats remained constant throughout all these variations of the show is the recurring characters and villains, creating a sense of connectivity that really binds this show together. And Doctor Who season 15 seems to be continuing this trend with a sneaky reference to a much earlier point in the show.
The fourteenth season of Doctor Who saw the long-awaited return of the Christmas specials, an annual tradition that began way back in 2005 and continued for over a decade until showrunner Chris Chibnall replaced them with New Years specials in 2019. While these offered some clever ideas and fascinating stories, the festive spirit of the Christmas adventures was sorely missed.

Doctor Who said goodbye to David Tennant for the first time in 2009 when the Tenth Doctor regenerated, but his iconic departure stands apart from that of his predecessors in a way that the show never openly acknowledges. Of all the actors to play the Doctor, Tennant's Tenth arguably experienced the most drawn-out version of the regeneration process. While preparing to change his face, he managed to hold off the ordeal long enough to visit all his old friends one last time. However, there's another reason beyond Ten's emotional farewell tour that makes his regeneration so unique.
Every Doctor Who regeneration sequence comes with consequences, but the main one is that the long-running sci-fi show's lead actor is replaced. The phenomenon has contributed massively to the franchise's 60-year history, as no single actor is required for the story to continue. That being said, there was a time when the Doctor's...

Steven Moffat, known for his work on ‘Doctor Who‘ and co-creating ‘Sherlock,’ recently shared his experiences and views at the Toronto International Film Festival.
With a Christmas special titled ‘Joy to the World‘ on the way, Moffat is set to become the writer with the most episodes of ‘Doctor Who’ under his belt, reaching fifty with this release.
Moffat humorously highlighted the unique aspect of ‘Doctor Who,’ where the lead can be replaced, unlike most other shows. This feature, he pointed out, adds a playful complexity within the community, especially among the actors who have previously played the role.
Each actor, including David Tennant, believes they are the quintessential Doctor, which Moffat finds both amusing and challenging.
During the festival, Moffat discussed the concept of storytelling through reboots, using ‘Doctor Who’s’ regenerations as a prime example. He believes all stories are essentially reboots, where new storytellers reimagine characters and plots in their unique ways.

Chris Chibnall's Timeless Child twist is probably the former showrunner's biggest and most controversial addition to Doctor Who canon, but it also paradoxically explains one of the potential plot holes opened by the storyline. Doctor Who's Disney era has gently referenced Chibnall's divisive addition to the show's continuity, but it hasn't focused on it all that much. The Doctor's Tardis was also affected by the shocking reveal due to the strong connection between the Time Lord and the iconic blue box. However, the Timeless Child storyline also explains why the Tardis looks so recognizable.
The Tardis has been a huge part of the show's formula ever since the very first episode of Doctor Who's classic era. Although it holds the potential to blend in seamlessly with its surroundings, it's never seen as anything other than a 1950s police box. Of course, the show had long explained why...

Jo Martin's Doctor Who character completely shattered what I thought I understood about the Doctor's timeline, but the confusing Timeless Child twist aside, her Tardis created another problem with franchise canon. Because Doctor Who has been going for so long, I completely understand why there would be certain inconsistencies with the universe's lore. With so many writers contributing to the vast worldbuilding, some things are going to slip through the cracks. However, some information, in my opinion, needs to remain concrete, and Chris Chibnall toyed far too much with some of the greatest Doctor Who stories of all time.
When the Fugitive Doctor made her debut back in 2020, I'm sure I wasn't alone in thinking she was a future version of the famous Time Lord. She wasn't one of the many actors to have already played the Doctor, so logic would dictate she was from a later point in the character's timeline.

Doctor Who has been through several iterations of the titular Time Lord since it began in 1963, but while most audiences would understandably consider William Hartnells original version to be the First Doctor, this technically isnt true. Throughout the shows extensive history, there have been plenty of different writers and showrunners in charge of the project, and each one has made dramatic changes to the canon that make it somewhat difficult to understand exactly where every single version of the Doctor sits on a timeline.

Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has candidly reflected on the vitriol he would receive from the show's fandom seven years after his exit from the role. The lead writer is responsible for some of the greatest Doctor Who stories of all time, and without his efforts, the show wouldve never been rebooted after its 1989 cancelation. The incredibly talented Davies is behind some of the most impactful episodes of the show, as well as the creation of many top-notch storylines and excellent companions.
Despite writing so many great pieces in the past and then allowing Steven Moffatt and Chris Chibnall to take the reins, Davies is still drawn to Doctor Who and has recently returned as showrunner. Doctor Who season 15 will start on Christmas Day 2024, the second holiday special for Ncuti Gatwas Fifteenth Doctor. While its expected to be another spectacular Doctor Who story, it faces significant pressure to be as good as Davies best episodes.

The two main characters from Broadchurch get reimagined into dour art. Broadchurch is a BBC series that ran for three seasons from 2013 to 2017. The procedural series starred David Tennant and Olivia Colman as D.I. Alec Hardy and D.S. Ellie Miller, two police workers investigating the murder of a young boy in a small, coastal British town. Broadchurch was created and showrun by Chris Chibnall, and featured a leading cast including Tennant, Colman, Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Carolyn Pickles, Arthur Darvill, and Charlotte Beaumont.
Now, new art from @nipunidraws shows a look at Miller and Hardy.

It’s been almost been 20 years since Doctor Who was revived for a new audience, and the show has brought us lots of Christmas and New Years specials since then. Although Christopher Eccleston rang in this new era with his Ningth Doctor in 2005, David Tennant's Tenth Doctor was the first to star in a holiday special.
We're going to rank every holiday special of the New Who era, including the New Years specials produced during Jodie Whittaker's run as the Thirteenth Doctor. Let's begin!
Bradley Walsh as Graham, Mandip Gill as Yaz, Tosin Cole as Ryan - Doctor Who Special 2020: Revolution Of The Daleks - Photo Credit: James Pardon/BBC Studios/Bbca 17. "Resolution" — 2019
The Doctor: Jodie Whitaker, the Thirteenth Doctor
Director: Chris Chibnall
While “Resolution” is certainly a visually impressive episode, it's dragged down by a lack of urgency and imagination. This is the first time we see Thirteen meet Daleks.

The BBC has issued a strong statement against complaints surrounding Doctor Who's gay romance between Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor and Jonathan Groff's Rogue. The Doctor Who season 14 episode "Rogue" saw Groff take on the role of an intergalactic bounty hunter on the trail of aliens causing chaos in Regency-era England. Upon crossing paths with the Fifteenth Doctor, their relationship is initially frayed and tense thanks to a case of mistaken identity, but quickly blossoms into something more intimate before it results in tragedy for the Time Lord.
Deadline reports that the BBC has issued an official response to complaints made about the Doctor's romance with Rogue. While two viewers issued carefully worded complaints about the episode that took issue with certain dialogue and the pace of the relationship in front of young viewers, the BBC dismissed each as not inappropriate for any audience members, no matter their age.

Doctor Who season 14's two-part finale brought to mind a legendary tale from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but I found the long-running British sci-fi show to be seriously lacking in its homage to the MCU in one key area. Although Doctor Who's Disney era technically kicked off with David Tennant's return as the Fourteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa's run as Fifteen is what truly marked the beginning of a new story. While Doctor Who season 14's ending was arguably a higher-stakes affair than that of the MCU tale I felt it was mirroring, Marvel executed the original plot far more effectively.
I was concerned when Disney signed the deal to co-produce Doctor Who with the BBC. Thankfully, I really enjoyed Gatwa's first season as the Doctor. The MCU, owned by Disney, has gone through a rough patch since the end of the Infinity Saga, so I didn't want...

Helena Bonham Carter had a blast on the Harry Potter set, especially during a memorable scene with Daniel Radcliffe. Despite her veteran status, she was playfully treated like a teen by her younger co-stars. Waving a wand wasn’t as glamorous as it seemed—Carter hit the wand-waving school hard and even picked up a blister from all the practice.

Season 14 of Doctor Who saw a departure from Russell T. Davies' previous grounded storytelling to a more lighthearted, fantastical approach. Davies intentionally switched up the show's style to break traditional TV rules, introducing musical numbers and more comedy in season 14. Fans hope for a blend of the best elements from Davies' two eras in season 15, combining fantasy with real stakes and darker moments.

Season 14 of Doctor Who saw ex-showrunner Russell T. The Timeless Child twist in Doctor Who explains the Doctor's origin, creating a unique narrative within the multiverse. Multiverse episodes lack alternate Doctors because of the Timeless Child's distinct origin story created by Chibnall. The Doctor's absence in alternate timelines would mean no Time Lords, highlighting the central role of the Timeless Child in their creation.
Ever since former Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall introduced the Timeless Child twist, several related plot holes have arisen, but the divisive storyline can actually explain a mystery that's existed for over half a century. Despite addressing almost every sci-fi trope during its lengthy run on TV, not all actors to have played the Doctor get to experience every story usually found in a show like Doctor Who. In fact, some of the best Doctor Who stories of all time are incredibly grounded, but that isn't the case for the Timeless Child and a specific franchise enigma it solves.

The Doctor's real name is now irrelevant post "The Timeless Children," adding a new depth to the character's mysterious past. The mystery surrounding the Doctor's name was a burden, now lifted with the revelation that the Doctor doesn't even know it themself. Scrapping the Doctor's "real name" mystery benefits Doctor Who by avoiding a potentially unsatisfying reveal after 60 years.
In 2020, Doctor Whos history dramatically changed with "The Timeless Children" episode of season 12, and the controversial storyline means the Doctor's name no longer matters. Written by then-showrunner Chris Chibnall, the episode sees the 13th Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) discover that she is not actually from the Time Lords home planet of Gallifrey and is instead part of an unknown species in a different universe. This reveal also included discovering an unknown number of previous regenerations that have been wiped from her memory by the mysterious organization known as the Division. Before this revelation,...

Post-2005 Doctor Who main TV-show companions. That’s the first qualifier to add to the following list. For now at least, we’re celebrating only the Nu-Who main companions who had their own proper stint travelling in the Tardis, or any of the many wonderful actors who preceded them in the classic era.
Now that the rationale has been set out, join us to round up some of the best after-Who roles from the likes of Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman, Catherine Tate, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Jenna Coleman, Pearl Mackie, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole. It’s too early to add Millie Gibson to this gang but look out for her in rebooted period drama The Forsyte Saga when it arrives.

The BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who spin-off The War Between The Land and the Sea will begin filming later this year. Here are the details.
When Russell T Davies came back to Doctor Who, one of the first things he mentioned was the idea of building a Whoniverse, where Doctor Who and associated spin-offs would all come under one banner.
The Whoniverse launched on iPlayer last year, and it included all surviving episodes of Classic Who and every episode of New Who, plus all the spin-offs like Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and even K-9 and Company. Every episode of Confidential is available to watch, along with a wealth of material from the BBC archive. Tales of the Tardis was a lovely treat too.
But what Doctor Who fans have been wondering ever since Davies returned was when he would launch a new spin-off. Rumours have been rife for months,...

Doctor Who season 14's finale felt similar to the previous season's, with both featuring a catastrophic energy wave. The show's storytelling and imagination in recent finales have been criticized as lacking depth and excitement. Doctor Who needs to find its way back to character-driven moments and meaningful connections to remain engaging.
Doctor Who season 14 featured one of the more divisive season finales in the show's run, but it also reminded me of the finale that immediately preceded it. Doctor Who is the longest running sci-fi show on TV, with the show's first episodes airing way back in 1963. Now, more than 60 years later, the show has undergone a few regenerations of its own, and it appears almost unrecognizable from the original, aside from some key characters, the mode of transport, and the core concept.

Author Agatha Christie passed away nearly fifty years ago, but her stories are still alive in a major way. A year rarely goes by without some sort of Christie adaptation making its way out into the world, with recent examples including the Kenneth Branagh films Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and A Haunting in Venice, the BBC series Murder Is Easy, and the upcoming three-part limited series Towards Zero. Chris Chibnall's stint as Doctor Who showrunner saw many longtime fans give up on the series. While some have blamed that on Jodie Whittaker being cast as the Doctor, the show's first female Time Lord actually excelled in episodes which ranged from mediocre to downright awful.
The pandemic also didn't help (there were significant delays between episodes and seasons), but the BBC has made a last-ditch effort to save the long-running sci-fi series by partnering with Disney+ and enlisting Russell T Davies to take charge.
He revived Doctor Who to great success in 2005 and was in charge during Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant's respective stints in the Tardis. As for Disney+'s input, it's given the series its biggest budget to date and now streams globally.
However, as we first noted on SFFGazette.com, ratings in the UK for this latest revival - starring Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson - are not good.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 14, episode 6, "Rogue."
Rogue's return to Doctor Who could spell tragedy, as the Chuldur may take his form and take revenge on the Doctor for sending them into exile. The Doctor's lack of familiarity with Rogue could make him vulnerable to a Chuldur in disguise. Shapeshifting aliens like the Chuldur in Doctor Who can complicate storytelling by introducing uncertainty and impermanence to characters.
Doctor Who season 14, episode 6, "Rogue," introduced a new love interest for Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor, but the eventual reunion the episode sets up could very likely be laced with tragedy. "Rogue" adds Jonathon Groff to the Doctor Who season 14 cast as the installment's titular bounty hunter, and although he's separated from the Doctor during the episode's closing minutes, the possibility remains for Rogue's comeback. However, if Groff does return to Doctor Who, there could be a catch regarding the character he'll be playing.

BAFTA Rising Star Mia McKenna-Bruce has been cast to lead as ‘Bundle’ a young, determined sleuth in ‘The Seven Dials Mystery,’ the new Agatha Christie series for Netflix.
McKenna-Bruce joins Helena Bonham Carter who takes on the role of Lady Caterham and Martin Freeman (The Responder and Black Panther) as Battle.
The series is set in England. 1925. At a lavish country house party, a practical joke appears to have gone horribly, murderously wrong. It will be up to the unlikeliest of sleuths – the fizzingly inquisitive Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent – to unravel a chilling plot that will change her life, cracking wide open the country house mystery.
Also in news – Jensen Ackles set for thriller series ‘Countdown’
The Netflix series is penned by Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall executive produced by The Crown executive producer Suzanne Mackie through her company Orchid Pictures and Chris Sussman (Good Omens). Chris Sweeney will direct.

Gatwa's performance as the Fifteenth Doctor is darker and more sinister, adding a unique and exciting twist to the character's usual heroism. Despite a slightly reduced role, Gatwa's powerful portrayal hints at the character's potential for evil, reminiscent of past Doctors who showed darker tendencies. Gatwa' should have an increased presence in Doctor Who Season 15, where his character's darker side may be further explored and developed.
Ncuti Gatwa brings something exciting to Doctor Who, and I really want it to continue. Although it was technically David Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor who passed the baton to Gatwa at the end of the Doctor Who 60th-anniversary specials in 2023, the Sex Education star is arguably taking over from Jodie Whittaker, as her version of the Doctor was the last to lead the show on a full-time basis. I had many issues with Chris Chibnall...
