A long-time Doctor Who (1963) fan, his first television appearance was on Open Air (1986) in 1986, in which he was part of a group of fans in the studio who were putting their opinions on the 1986 "Trial of a Time Lord" season of Doctor Who (1963) to writers Pip Baker and Jane Baker.

As the new executive producer and writer of Doctor Who (2005), one of his first acts was to cast Jodie Whittaker, an actress he had worked with on Broadchurch (2013), as the first woman to play the Doctor, thereby transforming the character from a Time Lord into a Time Lady.
