The Moment Black Mirror's Creators Knew They Nailed The Series' Dark Tone
Image
Charlie Brooker's dystopian "Black Mirror" revolves around the idea of taking a modern-day, technology-inspired concept to the extreme, often with results that are borderline impossible to predict. From the touching tenderness of the best "Black Mirror" episode, "San Junipero," to the disturbing "White Bear" and its connection to a real-life tragedy, few things are off limits for the Netflix anthology series. As such, waiting to see what kind of initial impact the show had on its viewers was an understandably important experience for Brooker and others behind the show.

Fortunately, confirmation for the show's effectiveness came early on, thanks to "The National Anthem" — the "Black Mirror" pilot that was so on point that it accidentally foreshadowed a real-life political scandal. The episode is a pitch black satire of social media and contemporary politics, notable for playing out with a grim determination that deliberately clashes with the ludicrous premise of...

Sean Bean to Play the Sheriff of Nottingham in 'Robin Hood' TV Adaptation on MGM+
Image
The classic English folklore tale of Robin Hood is getting another live-action retelling, and the new TV series has landed some serious talent to play the iconic villain, the Sheriff of Nottingham. The new adaptation from MGM+ was announced last September, with Seal Team's John Glenn acting as showrunner. Robin Hood is one of the most popular classic English folk legends, first being written about as far back as 1377. Adaptations of Robin Hood's mission to steal from the rich and give to the poor have ranged from the dark and dramatic (2010's Robin Hood) to the absurd and whimsical (Robin Hood: Men in Tights). The latest adaptation will take the character back to his Nottingham roots, with one of the most iconic northern English actors now attached to the show... Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones legend, Sean Bean.

Per Deadline, Sean Bean has signed on to MGM...

Colin Firth’s Lockerbie: A Search for Truth Slammed as ‘Tragedy Porn’ by Pan Am Victims
Image
‘Lockerbie: A Search for Truth’ is a British TV drama based on the true story of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. Directed by Otto Bathurst and Jim Loach, it stars Colin Firth as Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora was killed on Pan Am Flight 103.

The show follows Swire’s journey for justice after the bombing, which claimed 270 lives, including his daughter’s, and devastated the small town of Lockerbie in Scotland. The plane was destroyed by a bomb 38 minutes after taking off from London, and parts of the aircraft crashed into homes, killing 11 more people. The series premiered on January 2, 2025, in the UK and on Peacock in the U.S.

However soon after the release, the series was heavily criticized for exploiting the tragedy. On December 21, 1988, Mary Lou Ciulla was cooking dinner when breaking news reported a Pan Am flight had crashed in Scotland. She feared her husband, Frank, might be on board.

'Lockerbie: A Search for Truth' brings a tragic true story to TV
Image
Colin Firth plays a grieving father searching for answers in a series based on Dr. Jim Swire’s book.

I loved everything about Colin Firth in his last TV series, “The Staircase,” except the ending. The Academy Award winner is back in the limited series, “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth” premiering Thursday, Jan. 7 on Peacock. The five-part series tells the story of Dr. Jim Swire, a father who lost his daughter in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, when a terrorist attack brought down Pan Am Flight 103, killing 270 people. But this isn’t likely to be just a retelling of history - it’s a deeply personal look at a father’s grief, resilience, and pursuit of justice. Here’s everything you need to know about this limited series, “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth.”

‘Lockerbie’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Did Jim Swire Find The Truth About Megrahi’s Innocence?
Image
Lockerbie’s ending focuses on whether or not Jim Swire got closure about the innocence of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi in the 1988 terrorist attack on the Pan Am Flight 103, which killed Swire’s daughter, Flora. The miniseries, astutely directed by Jim Loach and Otto Bathurst and based on Swire’s book, follows the events between the 1988 bombing, which killed all 259 passengers and destroyed the titular town, and Megrahi’s death in 2012. The first 2 episodes of the show largely revolved around Swire and the family members of the people who died in the incident pressuring their country’s respective governments to find the people responsible for the killing. In 1999, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi and Lamin Khalifah Fhimah were handed over by the Libyan government, then led by Muammar Gaddafi, but by the time Megrahi was sentenced to life imprisonment (and Fhimah was acquitted of all crimes), Swire was convinced that Megrahi had been unjustly framed.

A bomb was planted on Pan Am 103 Airlines, and approximately 260 people ended up losing their lives. When the initial investigation was conducted, it was speculated that Iran had a hand in the matter, but then suddenly, the entire narrative changed, and the British government found solid evidence to prove that the perpetrators came from Libya. Lockerbie: A Search for Truth Review – An Emotional Odyssey of Loss and Justice
Image
“Lockerbie: A Search for Truth” serves as a somber reminder of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988, which took 270 lives. A turning point in the narrative of international terrorism was marked by this tragedy, which left deep wounds on families and communities.

After the loss of his daughter Flora, Jim Swire, a father, became a tenacious seeker of the truth. As he struggles with the tragedy’s ambiguity, his journey shows a complex interplay of grief and obsession, leading him through a labyrinth of political intrigue and emotional turmoil.

This five-part miniseries on Sky Atlantic, adapted by David Harrower and directed by Otto Bathurst, combines meticulous historical detail with Swire’s personal narrative. It forces viewers to confront the past while navigating the unanswered questions that shape the present.

Unraveling Grief: The Complexity of Character in Lockerbie

‘Lockerbie: A Search for Truth’ Review: Colin Firth Lends Depth to a Peacock Historical Drama That Sorely Needs It
Image
Appropriately somber and sincere-of-purpose, Peacock’s new limited series Lockerbie: A Search for Truth is, to the surprise of nobody who has been watching a lot of TV or reading my reviews recently, an important and powerful story dressed up in an ill-fitting suit.

The five-hour drama consists of two gripping episodes, then two meandering episodes and finally a conclusion of hastily resolved catharsis. Carried by a raw, heartbreaking lead performance by Colin Firth, it’s consistently watchable, but lacking the necessary focus to be truly exceptional.

Not to be confused with the Netflix six-parter, Lockerbie, Lockerbie: A Search for Truth — airing on Sky Atlantic in the U.K. — this one is based on Jim Swire’s memoir and adapted by Scottish playwright David Harrower.

The series begins in December 1988 with doctor Jim Swire (Firth) and wife Jane (Catherine McCormack) saying farewell to beloved daughter Flora (Rosanna Adams, conveying enough...

Lockerbie: A Search For Truth Review — Colin Firth Stars in a Series That is Riveting and Undeniably Powerful
Image
Lockerbie: A Search for Truth is riveting and undeniably powerful. It’s based on the actual events of the terrorist attack that brought down Pan Am Flight 103 on a chilly 1988 December night. The flight set fire to the sky from a bomb over the small Scottish town of Lockerbie, claiming the lives of all 259 people on board, along with 11 others on the ground, from falling debris that unmercifully fell from the heavens, looking like pieces of hell.

While Lockerbie: A Search for Truth occasionally falls into the pitfalls of dramatic clichés often found in true story adaptations, it features two phenomenal performances that stand out. Colin Firth and Catherine McCormack brilliantly portray the rotting core of a family grappling with tragic loss while also conveying the personal toll of grief when it prevents us from moving on and letting go.

Peaky Blinders Creator Teases New Series and Other Plans After Upcoming Film
Image
Peaky Blinders hopes to continue living long in the memories of fans thanks to its anticipated big-screen adaptation, The Immortal Man. However, the hit show's creator insists there's more to come from his popular franchise once the movie debuts.

Speaking with Paris Match (via Screen Rant), Peaky Blinders' brainchild Stephen Knight teased what fans can expect beyond The Immortal Man. According to Knight, he has an idea for a "new generation" sequel series that will be set after the upcoming film. Additionally, he suggested he could expand the Peaky Blinders franchise beyond upcoming screen projects. "We are going to focus on the new generation in a series that will take place after the Second World War. And then, who knows? Why not a clothing line?" Knight said. These comments elaborate on teases he made last year insisting the upcoming film wouldn't be the end of the Peaky Blinders franchise.

Lockerbie | Trailer released for drama series starring Colin Firth
Colin Firth
Colin Firth will headline Lockerbie, a Sky drama series about the real-life airline tragedy that occurred in 1988. Here’s the trailer.

Rightly or wrongly, the British television industry often uses true life tragedies as the basis for drama. As proven with Gwyneth Hughes’ brilliant Mr Bates And The Post Office, such dramas, when done right, can provoke discussion on a national scale.

The latest true-life disaster to make its way to the screen is Lockerbie: The Search For Truth, which chronicles the aftermath of the horrific events of the 21st December 1988, when a bomb caused Pan Am Flight 103 to crash over the Scottish town, killing 270 people.

The synopsis for the five-part series, from Sky itself, reads as follows:

Dr Jim Swire (Colin Firth) and his wife Pam, who tragically lost their daughter in the Lockerbie bombing, have doggedly pursued justice ever since. The series will see Swire nominated spokesperson for...

Created by Steven Knight, the hit BBC crime drama first aired in 2013, chronicling the life and criminal career of gang-leader Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) in early 1900s England. The series came to an end with season 6 in 2022, but a Peaky Blinders movie is confirmed to be moving forward at Netflix with Knight penning the script and Murphy reprising his role for a story set during World War II.

A new update for the Peaky Blinders film now arrives from Deadline, with original series star Stephen Graham telling the publication that he will be returning for the film. Graham, who appeared in Peaky Blinders season 6 as Hayden Stagg, remained tight-lipped regarding his return, but says that he's looking forward to seeing the lads again." It's not clear exactly how large a role Stagg will have in...

Taron Egerton's Biggest Box Office Bomb Is Getting A Second Life On Netflix
Image
Hollywood stardom is a cycle, with It Boys and Girls emerging every couple of years and going through periods of ubiquity before they either make it to mega-stardom or decide to take a different path. While that initial push by producers and studios of "Hey, world, here's your new leading actor!" can be distasteful or off-putting to audiences who haven't quite embraced an up-and-coming actor yet, it can also leave the projects these ingenues make during this period high and dry, the films themselves treated like a byproduct of a separate agenda. Granted, some of these films starring not-quite stars as the leads can feel awkward in retrospect, yet some look like hidden gems in hindsight. Or, if not quite gems, then at least decent entertainment that shouldn't have been lost in the shuffle.

Taron Egerton is a star who, in the few years between his breakout role in "Kingsman: The Secret Service...

Kingsman Stars Infamous Robin Hood Movie With 14% Rt Score Finds Streaming Success 6 Years Later
Image
Despite returning the property to a dormant state after its release, Taron Egerton's infamous Robin Hood reboot has found new life on streaming. Starring Egerton as the titular folklore rogue, Otto Bathurst's 2018 movie saw a disgraced Robin take up arms against the corrupt powers ruling Nottingham that took his wealth and status to further their own cause, joining forces with the rebelling commoners. Robin Hood also starred Jamie Foxx as Robin's accomplice John, Eve Hewson as his love interest Marian, and Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Despite a poor performance at the box office and poor impressions on critics, Robin Hood is finding a surprising new audience on Netflix. Though it holds an unenviable 14% among critics' reviews and a slightly more impressive but still unremarkable 39% among viewers, the feature recently entered Netflix's Top 10 Movies. At the time of writing, Egerton's 2018 reboot holds the No. 8 spot, coming...

‘The Abandons’: Kurt Sutter Exits Netflix’s Upcoming Western Series With One Episode Left To Film
Image
What’s going on with Netflix‘s “The Abandons“? On paper, the Western series has the potential to be a big hit for the streamer: an all-star cast featuring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson; a sprawling Western epic in a similar vein to “Yellowstone“; and “Sons Of Anarchy” alum Kurt Sutter helming the project. But as of this week, Deadline reports Sutter is off “The Abandons” with one episode left to film in Calgary, with executive producers Otto Bathurst and Rob Askins overseeing the rest of filming.

Soa Creator Departs His New Netflix Show Mid-Filming, Report Details Creative Struggle With Execs
Image
Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter has exited his new Netflix western series The Abandons. Starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, the series was also set to serve as a reunion for Sutter with his previous Sons of Anarchy castmates Michael Ornstein and Ryan Hurst. The Abandons was set to be Sutters first major television project after he was fired from the Sons of Anarchy spinoff series Mayans M.C. in 2019, serving as its creator, showrunner, and executive producer.

As originally reported by Deadline, Sutter has exited work on The Abandons with three weeks left before production was scheduled to wrap. While Netflix and Sutter's reps have declined to comment, sources suggest the change came as the result of creative differences that arose after the streamer had viewed rough cuts of the first few episodes.

Friction reportedly began when an early cut of the first episode ran an hour and 40 minutes long,...

Sutter, who created the drama and was serving as showrunner, left the show over creative differences with Netflix. The Abandons, set in the Oregon Territory in the 1850s, has a few weeks of production on its season remaining and will continue filming in Calgary, Alberta.

Netflix declined comment.

Netflix gave a straight-to-series order to The Abandons in October 2022. The series, which stars Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, centers on a group of outlier families in 1850s Oregon who come together to fight a corrupt, wealthy power that wants to force them off their land. Sons of Anarchy Creator Exits New Netflix Series Ahead of Production Wrap
Image
The Abandons, an upcoming Western series in the works at Netflix by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, is enduring some major turbulence behind the scenes. With most episodes already filmed, it's been revealed that Sutter has suddenly left the production.

Per Deadline, Sutter has departed The Abandons just three weeks before the season was set to finish with filming. The news comes as a shock, as Sutter had been executive producing in addition to creating the show. Filming will continue on without Sutter on board, as fellow EP Otto Bathurst and co-executive producer Rob Askins will oversee the rest of the production. There is reportedly about one episode's worth of material left to film, though there are also scheduled reshoots on the calendar.

Kurt Sutter Quits Netflix Series The Abandons Just Before Production Wraps
Image
Shocking news from Netflix today, as controversial showrunner Kurt Sutter has abruptly departed his new series The Abandons.

The show is reportedly in the final weeks of production on its first season.

Perhaps Kurt took the title a bit too literally?

According to a report from Deadline, the departure “is believed to stem from creative differences over the direction of the big-scale production as it is wrapping filming and headed into post.” (Photo by Rich Polk/Getty Images for IMDb)

Sutter, who’s best known for his work on Sons of Anarchy, is famous for his commitment to his singular artistic vision.

That makes him a bit of an awkward fit at Netflix, where execs have a reputation for micromanaging.

Today’s Deadline report claims that Sutter clashed with his streaming bosses over the running time of The Abandons’ pilot.

Sutter’s cut of the episode allegedly clocked in at one hour and forty minutes.

Kurt Sutter's Netflix series The Abandons already mired in mess before releasing
Image
If you are looking forward to Kurt Sutter's upcoming Netflix original Western drama series The Abandons, the latest update on the series probably isn't what you want to hear. Sutter has officially stepped down as executive producer and showrunner on the series mere weeks before the first season was set to wrap filming. No one saw that coming!

According to a report from Deadline, the reason behind Sutter's sudden departure from The Abandons has to do with "creative differences" regarding the direction of the series. As the outlet explains, Netflix wasn't on board with a cut of the seven-episode series' first episode, which clocked in with a 100-minute runtime.

Following the discovery of the movie-length pilot episode, the plan moving forward was to split the first episode into two episodes. That called for the creation of a newly written cliffhanger and additional scenes to allow both episodes to stand on their own.

‘Sons of Anarchy’ Creator Departs His Netflix Show ‘The Abandons’ With Only 3 Weeks Left of Filming
Image
Kurt Sutter has left his new Netflix show, according to multiple media reports. The showrunner best known for creating “Sons of Anarchy” departed “The Abandons” three weeks before production was scheduled to wrap in Calgary.

The upcoming Western drama stars Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson. Its executive producer and director Otto Bathurst as well as its co-exec producer Rob Askins will oversee the rest of the shoot. No new showrunner has been named. It’s been reported that the departure came down to creative differences.

TheWrap reached out to Netflix and representatives for Sutter for comment.

Set in the 1850s, “The Abandons” follows Fiona Nolan (Headey), a devout Irish woman who is incapable of conceiving a child. Believing in a higher purpose, she tries to build a family by adopting four orphans. But it isn’t long before she begins to face hardship after European aristocrats claim possession of her new home in Oregon.

Kurt Sutter Exits His Netflix Series ‘The Abandons’ As Production Nears End
Image
Exclusive: This is a shocker — Kurt Sutter is out of the Netflix series The Abandons just three weeks before the sprawling Western starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson is slated to wrap production in Calgary. Sutter was the executive producer/showrunner on the series, which he also created.

(Sutter and Bathurst are pictured in the above cast photo taken at the start of production in May.) The Abandons is about six episodes into its seven-episode shoot, I hear.
