Late-night TV has reacted to the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert with shock, sadness, and anger. Samantha Bee, on the other hand, had a very different response to the news, calling it a "no-brainer."
Bee is a late-night TV veteran, spending years as a Daily Show correspondent before moving to TBS to host Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. With that experience comes years of dealing with network interference, corporate politics, and other factors that have little to do with the art of making comedy.
So Bee wasn't exactly surprised to hear CBS and parent company Paramount axed The Late Show earlier this month. “It definitely was hemorrhaging money," Bee said on the Breaking Bread with Tom Papa podcast. "These legacy shows are hemorrhaging money with no real end to that in sight; people are just not tuning in.”

Add Samantha Bee to the list of current and former late-night hosts speaking out about CBS’ cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
On the Breaking Bread podcast, Bee and host Tom Papa discussed the network’s decision and what led to it. Bee said she believes both CBS’ stated rationale that The Late Show is losing money, citing the current state of linear TV, and that the soon-to-close merger of CBS parent Paramount Global with Skydance — which required approval from the Trump administration — played a role.
“I think both things are true and real,” Bee told Papa. “… These legacy shows, they are hemorrhaging money, with no real end in sight. People are just not tuning in even remotely comparatively to how they used to. People are literally on their phones all the time, for one thing. They don’t need a recap of the day’s events.”

Samantha Bee wasn’t the least bit surprised by what happened to Stephen Colbert and The Late Show. She knows exactly what it’s like to get comedy pushback from corporate muckety-mucks who are trying to protect a big deal.
Bee hosted Full Frontal, which aired on TBS, which was purchased by Time Warner in the 1990s, which was bought by AT&T in 2016, which divested WarnerMedia in 2022 so it could merge with Discovery so that… Well, you get the idea. All of the mergers — as well as the deals that didn’t go through — were “a constant source of conversation,” Bee told Tom Papa this week on his Breaking Bread podcast. “It came up all the time.”
So Bee was asked to back away from certain topics? “One hundred percent,” she said. “When a huge corporate merger is happening, nobody wants to cause trouble. Business trumps everything.”

Samantha Bee has said she was “shocked, [but] not surprised” CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, noting that the long-running late-night program was “definitely hemorrhaging money.” Bee, who previously worked alongside Stephen Colbert on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, shared her thoughts on the latest episode of the Breaking Bread with Tom Papa podcast. When asked her opinion on CBS’ decision to axe the show, Bee said she believes it was both a “financial decision” and to “curry favor with the president.” “I think both things are true,” she said, per Variety. “It definitely was hemorrhaging money. These legacy shows are hemorrhaging money with no real end to that… in sight, people are just not tuning in.” CBS cited financial reasons for canceling The Late Show, which will air its final episode in May 2026. However, others have speculated that the decision was made due to Colbert’s criticism...

Stephen Colbert's Late Show was given the axe at CBS, set to wrap up the famous talk show's historic run on television by May 2026. The decision has been met with an outcry from fans along with other talk show hosts, but a former figure in the late-night scene says that it was the right call.
From 2016 to 2022, Samantha Bee hosted TBS' late-night talk show, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. That followed her initial run as a correspondent on The Daily Show, which lasted from 2003 to 2015. As someone who spent many years in the scene until just a few years ago, Bee was asked about the Colbert situation in a recent interview for the Breaking Bread with Tom Papa podcast (via Variety). While she agreed with the idea that CBS canceled the show in part to "curry favor with the president," Bee also suggested that it was just as much a "financial decision,...

Samantha Bee doesn’t find it surprising that CBS decided to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert amid the Paramount and Skydance merger.
The former late-night talk show host made an appearance on the Breaking Bread with Tom Papa podcast where she gave her take on Colbert’s show getting cancelled.
Papa noted that the show was losing $40 million a year and that the show’s “parent company is trying to curry favor with the president” over the merger.
“I think both things are true,” Bee said. “It definitely was hemorrhaging money. These legacy shows are hemorrhaging money with no real end to that — in sight, people are just not tuning in.”
She continued, “People are literally on their phones all the time for one thing, so they actually don’t necessarily need a recap of the day’s events. They’re very well-versed in what has happened.”

Rob Zombie is a divisive figure in the horror space. People either love him or hate him without much middle ground. If you fall into the former category, you may be pleased to learn that one of the director’s lesser known films is now streaming on Tubi. Indeed, Zombie’s animated outing, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, is now available to stream via the ad-supported VOD platform.
The news that an under-seen Rob Zombie film is now available to stream is exciting to fans all on its own, but you may be even more enticed with the added context that El Superbeasto features several beloved characters who fans will surely recognize. Both Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) and Otis Driftwood (Bill Moseley) of Firefly Family fame make a cameo appearance in this 2009 offering. Though they aren’t primary characters, it’s pretty compelling to see them make the leap to animation.

CBS is betting on another show to fill the gap left by “The Late Late Show With James Corden.” Starting in September, “Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen” will take over the 12:30 a.m. slot from “After Midnight.”

While the Seinfeld gang clearly had a deep disdain for humanity in general, at least Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer all seemed to like — and possibly even love — one another. But behind the scenes, the core cast wasn’t quite as tight as you might have thought.

There is perhaps no bigger fan of Netflix than its own CEO, Ted Sarandos. And it feels like it’s every few weeks that he has something tone deaf to say about the state of the industry while also jockeying in heaps of praise for his company.
Appearing on Tom Papa and Fortune Feimster’s podcast, What a Joke with Tom and Fortune, Ted Sarandos actually praised the unique experience that going to the cinema can bring – but couldn’t help himself from saying that it’s a good thing that’s not the only way to see a movie. As he noted, “Most people don’t live anywhere near a movie theater. So this idea, and an interesting fact is that the average American consumer sees two movies a year in a movie theater. The average Netflix member watches seven movies a month.” He added, “Behaviors evolve. Consumer behavior changes.

Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos believes cinemas provide a “special” experience — but he’s sure glad they’re not the only way to watch movies.
Sarandos said on SiriusXM show “What a Joke with Tom and Fortune” (on Netflix Is a Joke Radio) that it is better to have numerous ways to both consume and present a movie, rather just solely relying on theaters.
“From the beginning of television, attendance to movie theaters began to drop, and it’s dropped every year since the ’60s. It mostly stays even because the ticket prices go up. By the way, this is not a slam on what it is, it’s just that’s the way you did it. That’s the way. And then technology evolves,” Sarandos told hosts Tom Papa and Fortune Feimster. “Behaviors evolve. Consumer behavior changes. I do think there’s something very special about it, but thank God...

Ted Sarandos sympathizes with directors who long dreamed their movies would end up on the big screen only to land on streaming as the business continues to shift away from movie theaters.
While talking with Tom Papa and Fortune Feimster on SiriusXM’s “What a Joke” podcast, the Netflix co-ceo tackled the ongoing topic that is the future of the movie theater. Sarandos acknowledged that the business has gotten tougher while saying he feels for directors whose movies never see the silver screen.
“I talk to a lot of directors and I totally respect that they — a lot of them grew up and this was their dream, to have the gigantic screen and a room full of strangers,” he said. “It’s a very tough business model anymore. And I just feel like, I hope it is always around as an option. I just think it will be more and more challenging.

You want to laugh, have some fun, and watch a bit of Netflix, right? And there is nothing worse than going to a stand-up show and not laughing. You feel bad for you and you feel bad for the wannabe comedian.
Luckily, most of the specials that follow will make you literally laugh out loud. In fact, three of them are worth multiple viewings. That is the other part of great stand-ups. You remember some of the greatness they delivered, but not all of it. You almost want to immediately go back and review.
Every comedian that follows is funny, but one simply has a bad special. Maybe he has run out of material. Or maybe he is in a rut. The others are absolutely perfect.

While he began his career telling jokes about frozen garbage pastries, Jim Gaffigan has since become a solid dramatic actor. Recently, he starred in the surreal indie dramedy Linoleum, and before that, he appeared in not one, not two, but three different Law & Order series, for five episodes total.
The TV procedural empire has frequently given comedians opportunities to take on more series roles, including Kathy Griffin, Martin Short and Gilbert Gottfried, who popped up in two episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, playing an NYPD technical wiz opposite fellow guest star Adam Driver.
Gaffigan guest starred in two episodes of the original Law & Order, one episode of Law & Order: Svu and two episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. And he played different characters in each one, thus destroying the believability of the Law & Order-verse.

Most fans of The Office (U.S.) know that Steve Carell wasn’t the only name that was in the mix for the role of regional manager Michael Scott, but not all of us knew just how Oscar-worthy the list of also-rans really was.
In the active online Office fandom, the mythology of the “what could have been” casts basically has its own fan-fiction community — an alternate reality where Bob Odenkirk plays Michael, Patton Oswalt is Dwight, Adam Scott is the office hunk Jim Halpert and Kathryn Hahn is an outrageous, hilarious Pam Beesly is the subject of numerous Dunder Mifflin die-hards’ daydreams. The lore about the other actors up for the roles on the most beloved and enduring sitcom of the 2000s is still popular in part because of the surviving screen tests from the casting process, but there’s an entire world of A-list actors whose names came...

A funny thing happened to comedian Tom Papa as he prepared to promote his hysterical new stand-up special, Home Free — Jerry Seinfeld stopped by Papa’s Breaking Bread podcast. “We were just planning on talking about comedy in general,” Papa told me. “You know, just catching up with old friends.”
It was the pod in which Seinfeld walked back earlier comments about the Left killing comedy, landing Papa directly in the middle of a national conversation. As Home Free premieres today on Netflix, we discussed what happens when Seinfeld weighs in on comedy culture, the time Tom Cruise got him all sweaty before his first Letterman appearance and how the podcast revolution has put comedians right back where they started.

Ray Romano says cruise ships are the worst place to do stand-up comedy. Tom Papa calls them “a dumb idea of a good vacation.” Bill Burr says that if he were dictator of the world and needed to thin the herd, he’d start by randomly sinking cruise ships. Comedians aren’t uniformly aligned on many topics, but they all agree on this: The only thing worse than vacationing on a cruise ship is performing on one.
Well, guess what, smart-ass comics? Turns out cruise passengers hate you too. According to Cruise Passenger, there are several reasons why many floating tourists are sick and tired of jokes on the high seas.

“Some of your comedians think ‘adult’ means all of the material has to be raunchy, vulgar and constantly over the limit,” said cruiser “M” about a trip on Carnival Cruise Lines. “Why do there need to be adult shows?...

Join Chip Harper on a hilarious journey to rebuild his doomsday cult in the wild indie comedy, Let's Start a Cult. Director Ben Kitnick delivers big-budget comedy vibes with indie values, featuring a talented cast and a unique storyline. With this film, Star Stavros Halkias continues to prove why he's one of the funniest comedians of the moment.
Have you ever been ditched by your buddies? Just downright ghosted by your gals? It's a sucky feeling, one that Chip Harper knows very well. It's the year 2000 and his beloved cult, The Cosmic Dynasty, has "transcended" (aka suicided) without him. He's always been the black sheep of the freaky family, a buffoonish loser, if you will, and it makes for a hilarious character well-suited for Stavros Halkias, one of the funniest and most charismatic comedians of the moment. He's fresh off a great, naturalistic performance in the Netflix series Tires, and...
