Biography

    • Jamila Pomeroy is a Kenyan-Canadian screenwriter, director, producer and on-screen personality. She began her career as writer-journalist; writing for outlets like Hypebeast, Hypebae, BBC, Red Bull, CBC; with works published in online and in print, internationally. Her writing across all mediums is known to be impact-driven, with immersive worlds that unpack contemporary social issues. Specifically, her work often champions historically underrepresented people and narratives, while generating both accessible, comedic and intellectually-charged storylines.

      After working in a few factual TV writers rooms, Jamila went on to write, direct, produce and host the CBC mini series A Happier Planet With Jamila Pomeroy, in 2022. Her debut documentary feature, Union Street, was then released in 2023 was then credited as the top "10 VIFF films to see" by outlets like the Province, Vancouver Sun and Vancouver magazine; won Best Director for a Feature Film at Reelworld Film Festival; and Best Documentary and the Milan Independent Film Festival. In 2024, Jamila starred in the Daytime Emmy-nominated series, How I Got Here, alongside her dad; embarking on a touchingly personal adventure to Kenya. In 2025 she released the CBC Absolutely Canadian TV special, Muzizi, which she wrote, directed, starred in and executive producer, alongside producers Richard Raghoo & Haydn Wazelle.
