Video: Producer Jeffrey Seller Talks Working with Jonathan Larson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, & More on The View
Image
Tony-winning producer Jeffrey Seller recently visited The View to discuss his new memoir, "Theater Kid." During the conversation, Seller opened up about discovering his love of theater at a young age, why he created the rush and lottery ticketing system, and his experience producing hit musicals like Hamilton. He touched on Jonathan Larson, with whom he worked during the original production of Rent. "Jonathan was ferocious in his mission, and he had a singular mission," shared Seller. "We did not have a contemporary musical [at that time], and Jonathan used to say, 'I want to write musicals for our characters, for our stories, with our music.' And that's what Rent was." Seller has also collaborated extensively with Lin-Manuel Miranda. It was at the producer's...

From the Oscars Red Carpet to Open Heart Surgery: What Variety’s Marc Malkin Wants You to Know About His Life-Saving Journey
Image
I had just finished interviewing Ariana Grande on this year’s Oscars red carpet when someone from her team asked me, “Are you going to get away after all this, take a little vacation?”

I nodded my head and smiled.

The “all this” was awards season. In the past, I spent my post-Academy Awards days and nights getting much needed rest and relaxation after a seemingly endless cycle of red carpets, FYC panels and events and parties.

I did take time off again this year. But it wasn’t a vacation.

On March 19, I underwent open-heart surgery.

It all began three years ago when my brother, Kevin, my only sibling, died of a heart attack at age 54. He collapsed while shoveling snow for a neighbor. He was rushed to a hospital. He never woke up. It was during Covid, so my mother and I said goodbye to Kevin via a...

A Legendary SoHo Diner Has Quietly Starred In Some Major Movies
Image
New York is known for its famous on screen eateries like Tom's Restaurant in "Seinfeld" or Katz's Delicatessen in "When Harry Met Sally" (which appears in the scene featuring that famous punchline), but rarely has a diner appeared as frequently in film and television as the Moondance Diner. Located on the corner of Sixth Avenue between Grand Street and Canal Street in the New York neighborhood of SoHo (South of Houston Street), the Moondance Diner was a railroad car-style diner built in 1933 made of shiny chrome. It had an adorable spinning crescent moon sign on top and shimmering glitter around its logo. On the inside, it had laminate tables squeezed next to shiny blue vinyl stools in front of a counter.

The diner's cartoony and 20th-century Americana aesthetic stood out against the surrounding brick apartment facades and other historic buildings, which made it really pop on screen. In addition to its motion picture appearances,...

Lin-Manuel Miranda Really Wanted To Play One Wicked Character
Image
Songwriter and Tony Award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda really, really wanted to appear in Jon M. Chu's recent "Wicked" adaptation — but I bet you'll never guess which role he was gunning for.

During an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in February 2025, Miranda, the man behind Broadway hits like "Hamilton" and huge cinematic songs like "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from "Encanto" revealed that he basically begged Chu for a specific and incredibly small role in the adaptation of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's acclaimed Broadway musical. "In the opening number of the show, this one munchkin runs out and goes, 'Is it true you were her friend?'" Miranda told Colbert. "Because, man, I don't know if you've seen a live production of 'Wicked,' but sometimes they really put some sauce on the ball when they deliver that line. It's where the story starts. So I was like,...

Andrew Garfield & Florence Pugh's 2024 High-Acclaimed Tearjerker Movie Is Coming To Streaming Next Month
Image
English actors, Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, are some of the biggest stars currently working in Hollywood, with a strong following thanks to the varied range of their filmography. Both Garfield and Pugh attracted major mainstream attention as they took on the roles of two arachnid-themed heroes when they played Spider-Man and Yelena Belova in several projects inspired by the Marvel Comics characters. While their superhero roles may have netted them major attention across the globe, Garfield and Pugh's respective ranges can be seen throughout their past roles.

Garfield's mainstream breakout came when he portrayed social media entrepreneur Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network, while his portrayal of pacifist World War II corporal Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge and playwright Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick... Boom! saw him receive nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor. After Pugh made her breakthrough through her roles in Fighting with My Family,...

Why Timothée Chalamet and Angelina Jolie could sing their way to Golden Globe wins
Image
What do the Golden Globes love more than a juicy dramatic performance? A juicy dramatic performance that sings.

From Austin Butler to Renée Zellweger, the Globes have long rewarded actors not known for their musical abilities who decided to show off their chops on screen in biopics. This year, that historical trend could boost the chances of two nominees: Timothée Chalamet for Best Film Drama Actor in A Complete Unknown and Angelina Jolie for Best Film Drama Actress in Maria.

In A Complete Unknown, Chalamet plays Bob Dylan. The film follows the legendary singer-songwriter from January 1961, when he moves from Minnesota to New York City, to his 1965 concert at the Newport Folk Festival, where he notoriously introduces electric instruments. Chalamet does all of his own singing in the film, refusing to lip-synch along to Dylan’s original recordings. As of today, the actor ranks second with 4/1 odds.

In Maria, Jolie plays Maria Callas.

Andrew Garfield Says He Had to Work Incredibly Hard to Break Free of Spider-Man Questions
Image
Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man movies elevated the actor’s career to a stratospheric level overnight. However, the success and fame that comes with donning the red and blue costume of Marvel’s most profitable and iconic hero comes at a price. As part of the jury at the festival, Garfield has found himself in a commanding position in Hollywood over the last decade, from being sought for some coveted roles to finding himself on nomination short-lists for many awards. As he explained to the press, though, there have been many struggles to break free from the shadow cast by his short time as a Marvel hero. He...

Lin-Manuel Miranda Is Adapting The Warriors As A Stage Musical. We Have Thoughts
Image
Walter Hill's 1979 cult action thriller "The Warriors" is a favorite among film fans, adapting Sol Yurick's 1965 novel of the same name into an addicting tale about a group of rival gangs in New York City all trying to track down and take out a group known as the Warriors after they're framed for the killing of a powerful gang leader named Cyrus who had been attempting to unite the different groups. The Warriors, miles from home in the Bronx, attempt to make it back to their turf on Coney Island, as the various groups try to kill them once they enter each new territory. Hill's film is as gripping as it is gritty, but Yurick's novel is an even bleaker examination of gang culture and urban rot. So of course, it's only fitting that "The Warriors" would become the subject of a large-scale musical theatre adaptation.

In 2022, Jessica Chastain won for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” after two prior nominations, and, in 2020, Joaquin Phoenix won for “Joker” after three previous bids. Expect this year to be no different — we have a whole crew of actors all searching for their first Oscar wins after years of nominations, near-misses, or just plain being snubbed. Here are eight actors who could break that curse this year.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Film Plan Is To Direct “Funky Little Musicals” And Leave The ‘Wicked’-Scale Projects To Others
Image
Lin-Manuel Miranda wants to keep directing movies, but don’t look for him to mount any large-scale spectacles.

“My responsibility as a filmmaker — and I really hope to make more movies — is to make the weird little musicals that no one else can get made,” he told Rosie Perez during an appearance Tuesday at the Tribeca Festival. His 2021 debut as a director, tick … tick … Boom!, was “a really nice size for me,” the Hamilton creator said. “I really love working with actors. I really love unlocking musical storytelling, and that’s the fun part.”

Miranda maintained he “would never” attempt something as lavish as Wicked, the forthcoming Universal adaptation of the long-running Broadway show. Jon M. Chu, a friend as well as the director of the film adaptation of Miranda’s In The Heights, “is going to do something amazing, and I can’t wait to see it,” he said.

Rent: How the Film Was Ahead of Its Time
Image
Making the best of a bad situation is often easier said than done. When characters live a life of poverty, several are battling life-threatening diseases, and it seems like there is absolutely no relief in the near future, a storyline can fall into a dark place. In 1996, Jonathan Larson thought differently. He took the daily struggles of the average person in East Village, New York along with inspiration from Giacomo Puccini's opera, La boheme, and he created a piece of art that shed light on harsh truths in an upbeat way. Larson was able to focus on devastating topics while maintaining a sense of hope for each of the spirited characters.

In 2005, Chris Columbus took on the challenge of adapting Larson's play, Rent, into a musical film to make the unique story more accessible to people. He managed to keep six of the original Broadway cast members, so the...

Tick Tick Boom Cast, Real Life Character & Broadway Cameos Guide
Image
Andrew Garfield and the Tick, Tick… Boom! cast helped to bring the beloved musical to life in a geature film with stunning results. The feature directorial debut of Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tick. Tick… Boom! is the on-screen adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s semi-autobiographical musical of the same name. With a screenplay by Dear Evan Hansen writer Steven Levenson, Tick, Tick... Boom! follows Larson as he struggles with the internal turmoil of turning 30 and not achieving anything yet.

In 1990, Jonathan Larson originated the show off-off-Broadway, calling it Boho Days. Over the next three years, he performed the rock monologue, now called Tick, Tick… Boom! in different festivals, venues, and theater workshops. This caught the attention of producer Jeffrey Seller, leading him to become a fan of Larson’s Rent and bring the musical to Broadway. Following Larson’s death in 1996, Pulitzer Prize winner David Auburn reshaped Tick, Tick… Boom! into a three-actor musical.

Who Owns Those Donald Trump Interviews?
Image
Donald Trump may have stumbled onto a novel copyright issue.

On Jan. 30, the ever-litigious Trump sued Bob Woodward and his publisher Simon & Schuster over the public release of audio recordings from their interviews for Woodward’s book, aptly titled The Trump Tapes. More than eight hours of excerpts from the interviews were published in October as an audiobook, and Trump says he’s entitled to all or most of those profits because he only granted Woodward permission to use his responses in a book. The former president asked for a court order declaring that he owns the copyright to the recordings or, at least, to his responses to the questions in the back-and-forth.

Woodward, in his motion for dismissal, argues that Trump’s claim fails because he hasn’t obtained the requisite copyright registration. While few courts have addressed interview ownership, he also argues it’s “obvious that ownership vests in the journalist,...

What happened to melodies in today’s movie musicals?
Image
Film musicals. You love them or you hate them. Your cringe-o-meter pings into the red or your heart swells with joy, and I’m not convinced there’s any in-between. There once was a time, though, when a simple tune had the ability to stitch itself into the cultural fabric for anyone and everyone. What’s changed?

In recent years, we’ve been served the hip-hop-infused, cultural soup of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton and In the Heights, the chart music bombast of The Greatest Showman, even stabs at nostalgia via Disney reboots and the Golden Era homage La La Land, the inevitable Broadway adaptation of which was announced last week. They tell good stories, have high-budget productions, and rake it in at the box office. At the centre of it all, though, I’m not convinced I hear any truly timeless melodies to be remembered or rebooted for the years to come.

All 13 Songs In Matilda The Musical Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, an adaptation of the hit stage musical, came to Netflix on Christmas day and features 13 songs, and the musical numbers are all memorable in their own way. Matilda the Musical was the first musical by composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, who has a background as a theater actor and musical comedian. Of the 13 songs in the film, all but one had appeared in the stage show, with Minchin having composed a brand-new finale number. Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is full of musical numbers ranging from soft ballads to large ensemble numbers that make for an interesting ranking.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is not Netflix’s first movie musical adapted from a stage show, recently having distributed adaptations of Jason Robert Brown’s 13: The Musical and Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick … Boom, the latter being the critically acclaimed directorial debut of Lin Manuel Miranda.

‘Dreamin’ Wild’ Review: Casey Affleck and Walton Goggins Are Faded Rockers Famous at Last
Image
Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. Roadside Attractions releases the film in theaters on Friday, August 4.

There is such raw tragedy when it comes to artists like Van Gogh or Jonathan Larson, with success and recognition of their genius only coming after they died. That fear lies in the heart of so many creative people, but “Dreamin’ Wild” is the real-life story of something even stranger. Based on the real story of Donnie and Joe Emerson, and based on the “Fruitland” article published by Steven Kurutz in The New York Times in 2012, “Dreamin’ Wild” is the tale of two musicians finding success when the 30-year-old record they recorded as teenagers finds a new audience.

Donnie Emerson (Casey Affleck) has never fully given up on his dreams of making it as a musician. He lives, unfulfilled, with his loving musician wife Nancy (a conspicuously...

‘A Strange Loop’ is 7th musical to win at both Pulitzers and Tony Awards
Image
“A Strange Loop” won the much-coveted Tony Award for Best Musical at the 2022 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12. The tuner from Michael R. Jackson claimed a total of two Tonys at the ceremony. In addition to its strong showing at Radio City Music Hall, “A Strange Loop” is now just the 7th Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner to also win the Tony for Best Musical.

The drama prize at the Pulitzers was first handed out back in 1918, but the voters of that American institution tend to prefer plays rather than song and dance. In 104 years of this award, only 10 musicals have been awarded the Pulitzer: “Of Thee I Sing” (1932), “South Pacific” (1950), “Fiorello!” (1960), “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (1962), “A Chorus Line” (1976), “Sunday in the Park With George” (1985), “Rent” (1996), “Next to Normal” (2010), “Hamilton” (2016), and “A Strange Loop” (2020). The Pulitzers also gave a special award to “Oklahoma!” in 1944, but this...
