Warner Bros.’ Mishandling of ‘Looney Tunes’ Under David Zaslav Is Nothing New — Just Extremely Silly
While it looks like there may yet be some justice in the case of “Coyote Vs. Acme” — if it indeed finds a new home and a theatrical release with Ketchup Entertainment — fans of the “Looney Tunes” still find themselves at the mercy of far greater forces than Bugs Bunny behind an animator’s desk.
Warner Bros. Discovery pulled its catalog of the original “Looney Tunes” cartoons, a collection of animated shorts that stretch from 1930 to 1969, beginning on March 16 as part of a wider effort to rebrand the streaming platform as a place much more for adult and family content as opposed to children’s programming. One consolation is that there are some iterations of “Looney Tunes” made between 1995 and 2022 that are still available. Another is that this isn’t the first time Warner Brothers has decided to vanish “Looney Tunes” content.
Back in the early 2000s, Warner Bros. pulled “Looney Tunes” off of Cartoon Network.

Pete Browngardt’s delightful The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, a love letter to Warner Bros.’s iconic Looney Tunes franchise, knows the history of its source of inspiration so well that it has the confidence to work without the safety net of Bugs Bunny. Here we get a rare modern-day spotlight for Porky Pig and Daffy Duck (both voiced by Eric Bauza) that leans into their earliest character traits: Porky as the hapless but fundamentally decent, even good-natured, average joe, and Daffy as an uncontrollable chaos god no longer bound by fate to be humiliated by his nemesis. This Daffy can do bad all by himself.
As far back as 1943’s “Porky’s Pig Feat,” Porky and Daffy have shared a chemistry premised on the tension between the former’s dignity and the latter’s penchant for anarchy. That dynamic is brought to bear here...

Ketchup Entertainment dropped the trailer for “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” on February 28 ahead of its March 14 theatrical release. The indie picked up the Daffy Duck and Porky Pig sci-fi origin story last year after Warner Bros. Discovery killed it for tax purposes (like the live-action/animated Looney Tunes hybrid “Coyote vs. Acme”).
The franchise’s first fully 2D-animated theatrical feature finds Daffy and Porky (both voiced by Eric Bauza) stumbling onto a secret alien plot to take over the world via mind-control and chewing gum. But they attempt to gum up the works with their inimitable antics.
Director Peter Browngardt (“Looney Tunes Cartoons”) admirably captures the essence of the wacky odd couple with wit and warmth, channeling the outrageous look and gags of his favorite Warner Bros. director Bob Clampett. “We wanted the audience caring about these characters,” Browngardt told IndieWire, “but still also...

Assuming the Earth doesn’t blow up before February 28, 2025 — not a complete impossibility given our political climate — you’ll have an opportunity to watch “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” in theaters. It almost didn’t happen.
The Warner Bros. Animation-produced “The Day the Earth Blew Up” was one of those movies that Warner Bros. Discovery blew up for tax purposes. Distributor Ketchup Entertainment back in August picked the animated film’s carcass up off Wbd’s (cost-)cutting room floor, aka the floor in David Zaslav’s corner office.
That other Looney Tunes film, “Coyote vs. Acme,” wasn’t so lucky — or it was simply too attractive a write-off to pass up. Warner Bros. Discovery still has roughly $45 billion of debt to pay down, and Zaslav and CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels have been brutal about the content cuts.

Did you know "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie" was even happening before you clicked on this article? You would think Warner Bros. would treat the first-ever fully animated feature-length theatrical film (not including any of the previous "Looney Tunes" package movies that compile multiple shorts) featuring some of the most iconic cartoon characters in cinema history as a momentous occasion. But no, under the reign of current WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav, "The Day the Earth Blew Up" has thus far been treated as little more than extra "content" for the fire (apologies for using the C-word).
Case in point, the original plan was to quietly shuffle "The Day the Earth Blew Up" onto Max with little fanfare -- right up until Zaslav's regime went all Freddy Krueger on the streaming platform's animation department and canceled half a dozen of their developing projects back in...

HBO Max has released a brand new Looney Tunes Cartoons short. The episode was dropped as part of the show's Comic-Con@Home panel. With San Diego Comic-Con unable to proceed as planned this year, a virtual version of the massive pop culture event is happening in its stead. The folks at Warner Bros. brought Bugs Bunny and the gang to the party, with a panel diving into the new animated series featuring the iconic characters. As a little treat for those who tuned in, this brand new short dropped.
The new short, titled Postalgeist, debuted 20 minutes into the panel. It features Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. The two are working for Daffy's Delivery and driving through a vicious storm with a package. Porky isn't overly fond of the thunder, pleading with Daffy to deliver the package later once the weather clears up. Daffy, worried about getting a negative online review,...

Before a packed house of fans at Annecy’s Bonlieu Theater, Warner Bros. Animation premiered nearly a dozen new episodes of its upcoming Looney Tunes Cartoons, which will be broadcast on TV and online sometime later this year.
Rebooting the beloved animated shorts that have been a cornerstone of Warner Bros. since the 1930s, series executive producer Peter Browngardt (creator of Uncle Grandpa), supervising producer Alex Kirwan and WB Animation vice president Audrey Diehl were on hand to take viewers through the creation process and to offer the first-ever public screening of what will ultimately be around 200 original cartoons.

Annecy, France — One of the most highly-anticipated presentations at this year’s Annecy Intl. Animation Festival was the world premiere of a slate of new “Looney Tunes Cartoons” shorts. To celebrate the occasion, and include fans from around the world that couldn’t make it to French festival, Warner Bros. Animation has shared an exclusive 90 second short with Variety.
As classic as they come, “Dynamite Dance” is an explosive thrill ride featuring Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, dressed in his traditional brown hunting suit and hat, in a cartoonishly-violent, non-verbal and classically orchestrated back and forth.
Set to Amilcare Ponchielli’s classic “Dance of the Hours,” Elmer fails time and again to get his hands on bugs, instead ending up with hands, mouth and ears full of the iconic red sticks of Acme dynamite.
The short was one of more than a dozen which screened this week at Annecy, two...

The Looney Tunes are back, and world premiering at the opening ceremony for this year’s Annecy Intl. Animation Festival, in what looks set in all probability to be one of this year’s highest-profile bows at the French animation gathering.
After teasing the series with an in-progress short at last year’s Warners animation showcase, to riotous laughter and applause, Bugs and his gang return in a fully-finished short ahead of Monday night’s opening feature “Playmobil: The Movie.”
In addition to Monday’s world premiere, on Wednesday executive producer Peter Browngardt and supervising director Alex Kirwan will present a behind-the-scenes look at the project including storyboards, animatics and more fully-finished shorts. According to them, the studio already has more than 20 finished shorts, a number which will grow to 200-plus, or 1,000 total minutes of “Looney Tunes Cartoons.”

Bugs, Daffy, Porky and the lot are headed to the French-Swiss border where they will open the 2019 Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival, in what the festival has announced as the world premiere of new episodes of the rebooted franchise titled “Looney Tunes Cartoons.”
They will screen ahead of the previously announced opening film “Playmobil: The Movie.”
Last year’s Works in Progress presentation by Warner Animation Group and Warner Bros. Animation at Annecy was among the best received in recent memory. For a few brief minutes, the audience of industry pros, animation students and press were transported back to Saturday mornings spent on the living room floor eating dry cereal out of the box in their pajamas. The laughter was raucous and persistent throughout the brief screening.
The clip screened was a spoof on the “Indiana Jones”-type tomb-caper, and shown in animatics. “The Curse of the Monkey Bird” featured...
