Reese Witherspoon Recalls Jury Picking Her To Oversee Deliberations Because Of ‘Legally Blonde’: “Definitely Did Not Go To Law School”

Contrary to some people’s beliefs, Legally Blonde is not, in fact, a documentary about the actress Reese Witherspoon.

The Hello Sunshine founder appeared in a recent episode of The Graham Norton Show — joined on the sofa by Ariana Grande, Will Ferrell and Don Gilet — recalling a hilarious instance of being picked for jury duty where her fellow deliberators weren’t able to separate fact from fiction.

“Listen, I did not want to do jury duty,” the Big Little Lies star admitted. “But I remember it was probably seven years after Legally Blonde, I got called for jury duty and it was in Beverly Hills, and I thought, ‘Surely they’re not gonna pick me.’ They picked me for a long trial, y’all. It was like, probably two weeks.”

When Ferrell chimed in that the duration wasn’t “that long,” The Morning Show actress defended, “No listen, it was two solid weeks,...

Death In Paradise Season 14: New Detective, Cast, Story & Everything We Know
Image
Death in Paradise season 14 has been confirmed for some time and news about the cast, story, and more has slowly rolled out since season 13 ended in March 2024. A highly underrated British crime show that many American viewers may have never heard of, Death in Paradise brings the grit and deadpan comedy of British mystery shows to the tropical locale of Saint Marie, a fictional Caribbean island and a British Overseas Territory. There, a series of Detective Inspectors from London arrive on the island to solve local crimes and make a home in this strange land.

Death in Paradise is filmed on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and the setting of the series, which first premiered in 2011, is a key aspect of the show's success. A major part of the show and a source of comedy is the fish-out-of-water aspects of the London-bred officers arriving in the relaxed and sunny Saint Marie.

The Hub will first air Wizards vs. Aliens' two-part opener at 7Pm on June 1; subsequent episodes will follow every Saturday at 7:30Pm.

First look at Wizards Vs Aliens
Earlier this month, Screenterrier reported on the casting of two young newcomers Scott Haran and Percelle Ascott in Cbbc’s new action adventure drama, created by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford (The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who), Wizards Vs Aliens.

And now here's a first look at Scott as Tom Clarke, and Percelle as Benny Sherwood.

Wizards Vs Aliens brings magic and sci-fi together to tell an epic tale. Aliens are intent of devouring all the magic on Earth - one 16-year-old boy stands in their way.

Tom Clarke is a seemingly ordinary boy who loves football. He lives with his dad Michael and grandmother Ursula in an ordinary house in an ordinary street - but there’s something different about Tom. He has an astonishing secret - his family are Wizards! When the alien Nekross arrive on Earth hungry for magic, there’s big, big trouble in store for all wizardkind.

Doctor Who complete reviews: The Runaway Bride
Stale turkey sandwiches. That's one of the things I most link with Christmas. Forget your crackers and tinsel or your mince pies and Tunis Cakes, or even your Slades and Band Aids, no, it's the thought of the stale turkey sandwiches that lingers in the mind. Simply because the turkey's invariably so big, that it's enough to feed the family for those come-down days from December 26th. And so the family gets that familiar Déjà vu, to the point where summer can't come fast enough.

There's a similar sort of feeling among some of the Doctor Who fans when it comes to The Runaway Bride. For the uninitiated, I'm not talking about the screwball comedy starring Richard Gere, Julia Roberts and Julia Roberts' huge mouth – no, this is the second all-important Doctor Who Christmas special, which was now becoming the big festive treat of the season. A common complaint...

Don Gilet shops to 'murder' chants
Don Gilet keeps getting called a ''murderer'' following his latest 'EastEnders' storyline. The actor - who plays murderous preacher Lucas Johnson in the BBC One soap - admits he often has run-ins with fans in his local supermarket, although most of the jibes are being made in good humour. He said: ''I only go out earlier or late at night to avoid all the people shouting murderer at me. People shout at me in the supermarket and then run into the next aisle! ''But luckily they know it's all pretend - at least I hope they do.'' It has been a hectic few months for ..

EastEnders (1985)
Don Gilet defends 'EastEnders' storyline
EastEnders (1985)
EastEnders star Don Gilet has insisted that his character Lucas Johnson's current storyline is "not about religion". The actor spoke out in response to suggestions that the killer preacher's long-running plotline is offensive to Christians as fans have seen him using the Bible to justify his actions. Since last year, Lucas has left his ex-partner Trina to die following an accident, killed the ex-husband of his current wife Denise, and - most recently - held Denise captive after attacking her in a rage. However, in an interview with BBC Newsbeat, Gilet commented: "It's (more)...

EastEnders (1985)
Don Gilet 'ecstatic' over 'Enders Lucas
EastEnders (1985)
EastEnders producer John Yorke has revealed that Don Gilet was "ecstatic" about his character Lucas Johnson's murderous personality. Yorke was responding to criticisms from author and journalist Hannah Pool, who claimed that writers turned Lucas into a killer with little reasoning. Pool had suggested: "When Lucas first appeared and as a man of the cloth, I was really interested because religion plays a big part in many black communities. "But then he started killing people and my heart sank. I thought, 'When you have so few black male characters, is this really the best you can do?' "EastEnders very nearly had a credible, working black family and they ruined it by making Lucas a murderer. I feel that a whole family has been written off." Yorke said in response: "If you look at the history of Afro-Caribbean men (more)...

BBC defends 'EastEnders' Lucas storyline
EastEnders (1985)
The BBC has dismissed complaints that EastEnders' current storyline featuring Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet) is offensive to Christians. Viewers have seen Johnson murder his wife's ex-husband and leave his own ex-wife to die following an accident. Most recent scenes aired appeared to show the preacher strangle wife Denise (Diane Parish). The BBC said in a statement: "Lucas is certainly not intended to be representative of Christians. He is a very damaged and dangerous individual who has created a twisted version of the Christian 'faith' in his mind to hide behind and to convince himself that his actions are acceptable. As the story unfolds, we will see other characters questioning Lucas's claim (more)...

Denise Johnson needs Enders miracle
Diane Parish thinks it will be a ''miracle'' if her 'EastEnders' character isn't murdered by her husband. The actress - who portrays Denise Johnson in the BBC One soap - admits her alter-ego has troublesome times ahead, after her murderer spouse Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet) takes her hostage in his car and tells her he killed his ex-wife and her ex-husband. She said: ''Lucas is so calm that it's eerie. He tells her that today is a special day and she's going to be baptised. Denise has always struggled with his religious fervour, but tries to play along because he really could do ..

The preacher's wife, played by Diane Parish, is bundled into a car and taken to a mysterious flat by her serial-killer husband Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet) when she confronts him about after finding make-up on his shirt and a condom in his pocket. But he wants her to see what's behind his suspicious behaviour, so she has no choice except to go with him for answers.'' Little does Denise know, ..

EastEnders (1985)
British Soap Reshoots Prostitute Scenes After Real-life Murders
EastEnders (1985)
TV bosses behind British soap opera Eastenders are reshooting scenes for a controversial storyline involving an attack on a prostitute in the wake of a series of shocking murders in the U.K.

An episode of the soap, due to air next week (beg07Jun10), shows character Lucas Johnson, played by Don Gilet, visiting a red light district and attacking a sex worker named Jade.

But several scenes are now being reshot by TV executives as a mark of respect to the families of three murdered prostitutes in Bradford, England.

PhD student Stephen Griffiths, 40, has been charged with the killings.

A representative for the BBC show says, "EastEnders storylines are written many months in advance and any similarity to real-life events is coincidental.

"However, on this occasion, to ensure we do not cause distress to the families involved in the recent tragic events in Bradford we have decided to reshoot some parts of the storyline involving Lucas Johnson."

The news comes shortly after TV bosses in charge of another British soap opera, Coronation Street, cancelled the broadcast of an episode featuring an armed siege after a gunman went on the rampage in North-West England on Wednesday killing 12 people and injuring another 25 before turning the gun on himself.

EastEnders re-film prostitute storyline
'EastEnders' cast members are re-filming next week's episodes out of respect for victims of a recent news story. Bosses on the BBC One soap have decided to make a last-minute change to the storyline, which would have shown Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet) killing a prostitute after making her pray to God for forgiveness, after a British man Stephen Griffiths was charged with murdering three sex workers in Bradford, England last week. A spokesperson said: '''EastEnders' storylines are written many months in advance and any similarity to real life events is coincidental. 'EastEnders' to drop Lucas prostitute link
EastEnders (1985)
EastEnders bosses are to refilm some parts of Lucas Johnson's story following the recent prostitute murders in Bradford. During next week's episodes - which were planned months ago - man of the cloth-gone-bad Lucas (Don Gilet) was to be seen visiting a local red light district and picking up a call girl named Jade. From there, he would drive her away to a remote location and force her to pray for God's forgiveness. After she attempts to run away, Lucas gives chase and creating a ligature with his tie - as he previously did while killing his wife's ex Owen - he would then seemingly strangle the innocent girl to death. However, following the Cps's decision to charge 40-year-old criminology student Stephen Griffiths with the murders of three call girls, EastEnders execs have decided to drop the prostitute (more)...

Lucas Johnson's Enders breakdown
'EastEnders' murderer Lucas Johnson will have a breakdown when his son is hospitalised. The Christian criminal will be left distraught when his young son Jordan Johnson (Michael-Joel David Stuart) ends up in a coma following a fight with his school friend Ben Mitchell (Charlie Jones) and believes his child is unwell because God is punishing him for his crimes. Actor Don Gilet, who plays the part, said: ''Lucas is fragile. The guilt of what he's done has been building up for so long, and he really blames himself for what's happened to Jordan. He believes that it's God's way of punishing him for ..

Tameka Empson returns to 'EastEnders'
Tameka Empson in Beautiful Thing (1996)
Actress and comedienne Tameka Empson returns to EastEnders next month, show bosses have confirmed. The 33-year-old reprises her role as Denise Fox's outlandish sister Kim, who is expected to "cause mayhem" with the locals as she settles into life on Albert Square. Beneath her "viscous and bubbly" exterior lies a "vulnerable creature with low self-esteem". Her comeback fails to impress her brother-in-law Lucas (Don Gilet) who is desperate for her to leave almost as soon as she arrives. Empson last appeared as Kim at the end of 2009 when she and her alcoholic boyfriend Dexter (Robbie Gee) turned up to Denise and Lucas's wedding in November. When Dexter fails to return with her, Denise is left wondering where he is and it soon transpires that Kim (more)...

'Enders star jokes over dog death reaction
EastEnders (1985)
EastEnders star Don Gilet has joked that he is scared to go shopping following the latest crime of his character Lucas Johnson. Last month, an episode of the Walford soap hinted that Lucas had killed his son's dog Sugar after the collie started sniffing around the spot where his previous victim Owen Turner lay buried. More than 100 viewers went on to complain to the BBC over the matter, prompting the corporation to reassure fans that "EastEnders does not condone the killing of dogs, just as it does not condone killing people". Speaking to TV Times about the controversial moment, Gilet commented: "I don't know how I'm going to cope on the streets when people see me! "No-one's attacked me yet, but I haven't been (more)...

Over 100 EastEnders viewers have complained to the BBC over isinuations that one of the show's key characters killed a dog. This week's final two instalments of the Walford soap saw Lucas Johnson - played by Don Gilet - begin to panic about his murderous ways being uncovered when Sugar the collie continued to dig in the soil around Trina's tree. With Owen Turner's body buried beneath, Sugar could still smell her previous owner's scent and with no-one else knowing Owen's whereabouts - or even that he's dead - Lucas decided to deal with Sugar in his own way. Holiday season gifts for the Black film lover
In my quest to figure out good Xmas and Kwanzaa gifts for my people this year, I realized we always recommend movies, DVD’s and VODs, but I’ve seldom read about good books here on S&A. So, I’ve compile a great list for of Black cinephile-based books for the filmgoing audience. Some you’re definitely familiar with, others maybe not, but nonetheless here it is:

Donald Bogle’s books

I’ve been reading Bogle’s books for 20 years now, so considering I’m just on the precipice of my (eek!) mid-30’s, that’s saying a lot of the amount of Black film knowledge that he’s imparted to the masses for decades.

Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies & Bucks

Arguably Bogle’s greatest, if not simply his best known book, “Toms…” is the definitive study of American Black film images going back to the beginning with Birth of...
