Chava Cartas

Our Times Review: Two Physicists, One Culture Shock
Image
In the cinematic landscape, time travel is often a mechanism for grand spectacle or world-saving heroics. Chava Cartas’s Our Times (Nuestros Tiempos), however, uses the device for a more intimate purpose, recalling the social comedies of Indian cinema where a simple shift in environment exposes deep-seated truths. The film opens in 1966 Mexico City, introducing Dr. Nora Cervantes and Dr. Héctor Esquivel, a married pair of physicists bound by affection and a shared scientific ambition.

They are secretly building a time machine. The film quickly establishes its central tension: Nora is a brilliant scientist in an era that patronizes her, forcing her to channel her ideas through her husband. Héctor, who acts as the project’s public face, loves his wife but is a passive participant in the patriarchal system that diminishes her.

Their plan for a minor fifteen-minute hop into the future goes awry, stranding them sixty years ahead...

Netflix’s Counterstrike / Counterattack Cast And Character Guide
Image
Netflix’s latest Mexican shoot-’em-up, Counterstrike, directed by Chava Cartas, is as straightforward and entertaining an outdoor action movie as can be. With a fairly simplistic plot that sees a small band of special agents surviving against great odds while taking down waves of cartel militia, Counterstrike utilizes a compact, streamlined narrative style that never lets viewers feel the weight of successive action sequences throughout its 80 minute runtime. When it comes to characterization, despite being nothing extraordinary, it does the job of making viewers relate to the key characters and establishes the basic emotional connection that is needed to heighten the tension and balance the action spectacles. Although it would have been better if the Murcielagos unit members, whose interpersonal relations are the heart of the movie, were fleshed out a bit more, and I don’t think it would have hampered the flow of the narrative in any way either.

‘Counterstrike / Counterattack’ Netflix Review: A Straightforward Survival Action Film
Image
Movies centered around the military, which are pumped with all flavors of hypernationalism and machismo, have always been, and still are, an easy sell nowadays. If it’s a biopic of someone who gave their life while committing all kinds of war crimes, which were obviously whitewashed to make the narrative palatable for the family audience, then it’s a guaranteed hit. But for reasons I don’t want to specify, because I don’t want to be labeled an anti-national, this subgenre of action films has never impressed me. Now, if you put a small group of soldiers in a forest and make them go through hell, then you have my undivided attention. For starters, there’s Triple Frontier, which is also one of the best heist movies. Da 5 Bloods is a great example too. Factually inaccuracies aside, Lone Survivor is amazing. Despite veering into sci-fi territory, Predator...

“Counterstrike” on Netflix: a Mexican thriller about the world of drug cartels and police
Image
“Counterstrike” is a Mexican Netflix film directed by Chava Cartas, starring Luis Alberti, Noé Hernández, Luis Curiel, and Leonardo Alfonso.

Netflix releases “Counterstrike”, a Mexican thriller that takes us into the world of the fight against drug trafficking in Mexico and the tough operation to arrest one of them (Josefo Urías).

An action movie, a genre thriller that aims to be an action thriller more than a realistic film, with good cinematographic scenes and well-drawn characters.

“Counterstrike” tells us about the mass graves left behind by drug cartels in Mexico but, beyond being a social commentary, it focuses on its action aspect and on giving the viewer a balanced dose between realism and pure thriller.

Directed by Chava Cartas and written by José Rubén Escalante Méndez, “Counterstrike” immerses the viewer in the heart of a dangerous military operation that goes awry. The film follows Captain Guerrero and his squad of...

Mexican Action Movie 'Counterstrike' Trailer About Five Elite Soldiers
Image
"I want each and every one of them torn to shreds!" Not if they take you out first. Netflix has revealed an official trailer for an intense action thriller movie called Counterstrike, made by the Mexican filmmaker Chava Cartas. This is set for a streaming debut on Netflix starting at the end of this month. When a hostage rescue mission creates a new enemy, Capt. Guerrero and his elite soldiers must face an ambush by a ruthless drug cartel. While there have been a few other movies titled Counterstrike before (like this one), this new movie reminds me of the popular video game Counter-Strike made by Valve. With a similar concept about a group of five elite soldiers (basically a group of players hanging out & working together on the same team?) outsmarting the dangerous cartel and taking out the bad guys. Starring Luis Alberti, Noé Hernández, Mayra Batalla, Leonardo Alonso,...

Vix+, the largest Spanish-language streaming service, owned by TelevisaUnivision, has released three new original Mexican horror films, for fans of Spanish-language horror. These films vary from creepy supernatural to a slow-burn family tragedy, to a zombie rollercoaster ride.

While getting ready for a Halloween party, a zombie apocalypse explodes in a private gated community, threatening everyone inside the community. Toronto After Dark Film Festival 2022 Review: Mexzombies Blends Blood and Sunshine for a Delightful Take on the Impending Apocalypse
Image
We’ve had flesh eaters populating so many cinema screens, it’s sometimes difficult for zombie movies to portray a world wherein zombie movies don’t exist. MexZombies, a horror comedy out of Mexico taking its festival tour now to the Toronto After Dark Film Fest, doesn’t ever try to ignore zombie movies, but instead, treats them as important information for the characters. MexZombies plays to those of us who made our contingency plans after consuming zombie media and maybe kind of secretly hoped we’d be validated when the monsters showed up, making our movie geekdom suddenly incredibly cool and tough.

Tavo (Iñaki Godoy) lives on the other side of the gate. His friends are residents of the private community, Sierra Linda, a polished little slice of land patrolled by guards in golf carts. Here lives his best pal, Jacob, his crush, Ana (Roberta Damián), and of course,...
