Chuku Modu Extends ‘Good Doctor’ Return With Promotion To Series Regular
Image
Original The Good Doctor cast member Chuku Modu is once again a series regular on the ABC medical drama, playing Dr. Jared Kalu.

Modu, who originally returned midway through last season as a recurring, has been promoted to regular for the upcoming seventh season, now in production.

Modu’s surgical resident Dr. Jared Kalu was a breakout character in Season 1. He got into trouble for punching a doctor who had sexually harassed his girlfriend, resident Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) and ultimately headed to Colorado for a surgeon job.

Kalu eventually left that job to become a concierge doctor, which is how he ended up back at San Jose’s St. Bonaventure Hospital. He ended up sticking around his old stumping grounds.

The full-time return of Modu, first reported by TVLine, follows the exit of fellow original Good Doctor cast member Will Harper who is running for Senate. Brandon Larracuente also...

Stephen King: Best Scares in The Boogeyman
Image
This article mentions suicide and depictions of violence.

2023's The Boogeyman is based on a short story by Stephen King and brought to life by the producers of Stranger Things. With such big names attached to the project, the movie received a lot of buzz. Fans flocked to the theater expecting to be chilled to their core, and the movie didn't disappoint.

Although The Boogeyman relied on clever jump scares and concealing the monster's design in dark areas, it delivered some intense sequences that had audiences on the edges of their seats. Like most successful monster movies, it knew how much to reveal without giving away too much.

Updated by Ajay Aravind on November 22, 2023: Stephen King's novels and short stories have been transformed into dozens of movies and TV shows. The Boogeyman is a relatively recent adaptation, although the eponymous short story was written 50 years ago, in 1973. Given the popularity of the film,...

The Boogeyman Director Rob Savage on Stephen King Movies
Image
The Boogeyman is yet another Stephen King adaptation, reframing the 1973 short story as an extended exploration of grief -- while still being plenty horrifying. Still reeling from the death of their mother, Sadie and Sawyer struggle to get their therapist father Will to acknowledge his own pain. But they find themselves forced together if they have any chance of surviving a mysterious and monstrous force lurking in the shadows.

As much a character study as a creature feature, The Boogeyman excels when it leans into its grounded elements -- which makes sense given that the filmmakers behind-the-scenes were keenly focused on finding that balance. During an interview with Cbr now that The Boogeyman is available on DVD and Blu-ray, the film's director Rob Savage discussed the interplay between grief and terror, the importance of improvisation, and carrying on the Stephen King legacy.

Peacock’s Scrapped Field of Dreams Adaptation Could Have Been Led by an All-Star Roster
Image
Peacock's planned adaptation of "Field of Dreams" would have featured Kristen Bell, Nick Offerman and more. The series would have included a storyline about Black players trying out for the Boston Red Sox. Despite significant preparation, including the construction of sets resembling the original film, financial issues led to the cancelation of the project.

A Field of Dreams series adaptation was in the works at Peacock, but that dream was dashed when the streamer announced they would not move forward with the series. Michael Schur, who was tied to the project as a writer and executive producer, recently revealed some details that hinted at the possibility of greatness had the reimagining transpired. During an appearance on the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast, Schur shared that the series' cast would have included Kristen Bell, Andre Braugher, William Jackson Harper, and Nick Offerman (who recently appeared in Prime Video's short-lived A League of Their Own...

Scrapped Field Of Dreams TV Show's Unbelievable Cast Revealed By Creator
Image
The scrapped television adaptation of Field of Dreams had an impressive cast including Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, Nick Offerman, and Andre Braugher. Mike Schur, creator of The Good Place, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Parks and Recreation confirmed the involvement of these stars in his version of the show. The series would have focused on a fictional player named Moonlight Williams and the historical pressure on Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey to give tryouts to Negro league players in 1945.

The unrealized Field of Dreams television adaptation had a seriously impressive cast, as revealed by creator Mike Schur. It was announced in August 2021 that the seminal 1989 baseball film Field of Dreams, written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson, with Kevin Costner starring, was being remade into a television show for Peacock. Schur, creator of The Good Place and co-creator of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Parks and Recreation, was attached to write and executive the project.

The Boogeyman is a horror film that follows the Harper family as they deal with the loss of their mother and the arrival of a demonic entity that feeds on their suffering. Director Rob Savage explains how the original script was reworked to focus on the perspective of a child, capturing the feeling of being a terrified kid facing the Boogeyman. Will Harper In ‘The Boogeyman,’ Explained: What Happens To Chris Messina’s Character?
Image
Stephen King’s novels and short stories are ready-made material for horror genre filmmakers to adapt and send the viewers into a labyrinth of terror. Many of his works are very well known. The new movie The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage, is based on King’s 1973 short story of the same name. It tells the story of the Harper family, which suffers terribly after the death of the mother. The father, a psychiatrist by the name of Will Harper, while struggling to deal with his own grief, starts to focus too much on his work and not enough on his two young girls. The elder, Sadie, drifts apart from her friends at school, and the younger one, Sawyer, starts to get terrified in her room at night. All this has to do with a sick man who came to see Will at his house. The characters are rich in their inner lives,...

Sadie Harper In ‘The Boogeyman’, Explained: What Happens To Sophie Thatcher’s Character?
Image
The new horror film The Boogeyman does something very unusual as compared to other recent horror movies. It places importance on both the characters in the film and the tropey jumpscares, which is why I think it is highly engaging and connects very deeply because of the well-written characters. This does not mean that it’s completely devoid of genre conventions. On the contrary, it is totally a conventional movie, and you might see the twist coming, yet there is something very tender about the film that has been wonderfully brought forward by the performances. The story revolves around the Harper family, which was grieving their mother’s death.

Will Harper lost his wife and now has to look after the two children. Sadie, the elder daughter, was growing distant from Will, and Sawyer, the younger one, was just too young, but she too missed her mother. She constantly reminded Will of this feeling,...

What Happened To Each Of Lester Billings’ Kids Before The Boogeyman
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Boogeyman.

After a shocking crib scene as The Boogeyman opens, Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian) stumbles into Will Harper's (Chris Messina) home office for an impromptu therapy session, and doesn't shy away from telling him exactly what happened to each of his children. Desperate and paranoid, he asks the therapist and father of two to close the door to his closet and begins to talk about a "shadow monster" that invaded his household. After he explains what The Boogeyman is, he sees himself in Will when he recognizes the father's skepticism, and his wild stories inspire Harper to slip out quietly and phone the police.

When Harper returns, he discovers that his teenage daughter Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) has come home early from school only to find Billings hanging from the back of a door after what looks like a struggle. One of the...

The Ending Of The Boogeyman Explained
Image
The following post contains spoilers for "The Boogeyman."

Most Stephen King adaptations contain more than their share of darkness. For decades, the Master of Horror has written about monsters dwelling in the darkest corners of humanity as well as the darkness we carry in the depths of our souls. In the new horror film "The Boogeyman," director Rob Savage brings to life one of the darkest stories in King's first short story collection. The sixth tale in "Night Shift" tackles both types of gloom with a soul-sucking ghoul that feeds on grief and a harrowing climax that takes place in near-total darkness.

The film's conclusion begins with Sadie Harper (Sophie Thatcher) rushing to warn her father about the sinister creature growing stronger in their home. When she arrives, she finds the lights extinguished and her little sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) hiding in the closet. The frightened girls descend into...

The Boogeyman Movie Sets Up A Sequel That Goes Beyond Stephen King's Story
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Boogeyman.

As though it didn't already extend Stephen King's short story enough, The Boogeyman sets up a sequel that goes even further beyond the horror author's initial narrative. Found in the pages of King's Night Shift anthology of scary stories, the novella begins with Lester Billings (played by David Dastmalchian in what amounts to a five-minute cameo) explaining to therapist Will Harper (Chris Messina) about a "shadow monster" killing his three young children. In one of the biggest changes to Stephen King's Boogeyman book, Billings is killed soon after, but not before depositing an evil entity in Harper's household that immediately begins to prey on his own children.

The bulk of The Boogeyman is devoted to elder daughter Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) and her younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) trying to convince their father that the monster exists while still processing...

From there, we quickly move to the movie’s main protagonists adjusting to their new lives after a tragic death in the family of the mother. ‘The Boogeyman’ Actor Chris Messina on Bringing Stephen King’s Short Story to Life [Interview]
Image
The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage (Host) with a screenplay by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, 65) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan), draws from Stephen King‘s 1973 short story of the same title.

Stephen King’s short takes place in a psychiatrist’s office and sees Dr. Harper engaged with patient Lester Billings in a haunting session that unpacks the mysterious deaths of Lester’s three children. Feature film The Boogeyman uses the short story as the inciting event that brings the malevolent entity that plagued Billings’ home into Dr. Harper’s.

In the film, Chris Messina (Birds of Prey, Devil) assumes the role of Dr. Will Harper, a psychiatrist struggling to help his family through their collective grief, when Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian) arrives at his home office for aid. This pivotal introductory scene establishes Will Harper, the lore, and its ties to King’s source material.

Ahead of the film’s release,...

The Boogeyman Review: Classic Stephen King Story Makes for Soft Horror
Image
In 2005, screenwriter and author Blake Snyder coined the term “save the cat” when referring to the beat in a story—usually very early on—in which a protagonist does something so admirable it instantly engenders audience sympathy and trust. Think Aladdin giving his only loaf of bread to two street urchins in the Disney movie, or Indiana Jones saving Alfred Molina from spiders, even after Molina’s buddy already betrayed him moments earlier, in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

While watching the opening moments of The Boogeyman, this concept popped into my head, as did the realization that there’s a reversal of it. Consider: Audiences as of late have been inundated with horror movies which want you to know immediately they’re playing for keeps, and their titular monster is the genuine thing. Hence the scene where a baby is stolen and sacrificed to the Devil in The Witch...

‘The Boogeyman’ Review: Stephen King’s Classic Short Story Expands Into Effectively Dark Psychological Horror Film Focusing On Loss And Grief
Image
If the title feels familiar you would not be wrong. The word “boogeyman” has been the subject of numerous movies all using the same moniker, at least ten on iMDB database before I stopped counting, but all of them dated post 1973 when the horror master Stephen King first published his 8-page short story in a magazine, followed five years later by its inclusion in one of his classic short story collections, “Night Shift”. So in one form or another this now 50 year old tale has become shorthand for lots of Hollywood concoctions that had nothing to do with it, but hey a good title is a good title.

King’s “The Boogeyman” was basically a two hander between a disturbed patient and his therapist who indeed turned out to be his boogeyman. It was actually shot as a short by some entertprising filmmakers in 2012, but clearly there was not enough...

The Boogeyman Review for Scaredy-Cats: A Dream Movie for Facing Fear
Image
For decades, a terror-provoking threat has been lurking in children’s closets. Now, in an eponymous film adaptation of Stephen King’s short story, The Boogeyman, the dark and mysterious monster is getting his big-screen close-up in hopes of scaring the adults who grew up fearing him. Horror film enthusiasts likely won't be wowed by the plot's mostly predictable progression, but this film does provide a good reason to watch for the scaredy-cats among us.

With disbelief in his existence, parents have historically leveraged the threat of the mythical being’s wrath to suppress bad behavior in their children. Imagined images of distorted or intimidating dark figures have haunted the impressionable minds of youth in long withstanding ways throughout their lives as a result. Behave and he won't get you. First, kids must believe this to be a viable threat in order to fear him and, unfortunately, most do just that.

The Boogeyman Uses Stephen King's Original Short Story As The Inciting Incident
Image
One day in the distant future, horror fans are going to have a rude awakening. Eventually, every single idea that Stephen King has ever committed to the page is going to be adapted into a film or television series; it's inevitable. But until that sad day comes, let's all continue to focus on what spooky King property is coming down the pipeline next.

The sparse but undeniably creepy short story "The Boogeyman" from the "Night Shift" collection is being adapted by director Rob Savage from a script by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, scribes for "A Quiet Place". Originally, the movie was set to premiere on Hulu this year until a well-received test screening and a winning endorsement from King himself convinced Disney's 20th Century Studios to release the film theatrically.

The risk of releasing new genre films in movie theaters instead of going directly to streaming has been paying...
