‘Cobra’ 4K Uhd Review (Arrow Video)
Image
Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Brigitte Nielsen, Reni Santoni, Andrew Robinson, Brian Thompson, John Herzfeld, Lee Garlington | Written by Sylvester Stallone | Directed by George P. Cosmatos

Sylvester Stallone burst onto the Hollywood scene with his title role of Rocky Balboa in 1976’s Rocky. After that film, he starred in so many action films including First Blood and its “Rambo” sequels, more Rocky films, Over the Top, Demolition Man, Cliffhanger, Tango and Cash and a guilty pleasure film for me, Judge Dredd.

However, in 1985, Sylvester Stallone and director George P. Cosmatos brought the world the exciting sequel to First Blood with Rambo: First Blood Part II. Then, a year late,r the duo teamed up again for the iconic 80s action-thriller Cobra. This cult classic is coming up on its 40th anniversary, so for that epic event, Arrow Video has decided to restore and release this action film on 4K!

A crazed killer.

Review: Robert Wise’s ‘The Andromeda Strain’ on Arrow Video 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
Robert Wise’s adaptation of The Andromeda Strain retains much of the Michael Crichton novel’s emphasis on the minutiae of efforts to contain a deadly extraterrestrial microorganism while blending in elements of a procedural thriller and a disaster film. As lensed by Richard H. Kline, the Panavision imagery conjures a sense of impending doom, as almost every resident in a small New Mexico town is found dead after a U.S. military satellite crashes nearby, but it’s Boris Leven’s art direction, especially within the laboratory where a group of scientists gather following news of the disaster, that gives the film its distinctively clinical look and feel.

Nelson Gidding’s script methodically moves toward a climax in which the disarming of a bomb inside the lab could prevent humanity’s extinction. Days prior, the U.S. military activates a covert operation involving a team of scientists, foremost among them Dr.

‘Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter’ 4K Uhd Review
Image
Stars: Horst Janson, John Carson, Shane Briant, Caroline Munro, John Cater, Lois Daine, Ian Hendry, Wanda Ventham | Written and Directed by Brian Clemens

Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter stands out as one of Hammer Horror’s most unique and compelling entries, especially when viewed within the broader context of the studio’s extensive catalogue. As a longtime fan of Hammer films – everything from the gothic gloom of Dracula and The Curse of Frankenstein to the more outlandish offerings in their later years – Captain Kronos feels like a refreshing jolt of originality that hinted at a new direction the studio never fully got to explore.

What sets Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter apart is its genre-blending confidence. While most Hammer horrors comfortably bask in the gothic trappings of foggy graveyards, haunted castles, and blood-dripping fangs, this film veers into swashbuckling territory, borrowing from spaghetti westerns and samurai films as much as it does from vampire lore.

Is 'Enemy of the State' a Stealth Sequel to 'The Conversation'?
Image
As the moviegoing world continues to mourn the loss of the great Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their pet dog, two of his excellent performances released 25 years apart may be more related than it seems. Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation and Tony Scott's Enemy of the State star Hackman as paranoid surveillance experts on opposite sides of the United States, with many critics believing they could be the same character.

As such, it's worth wondering if Enemy of the State is a low-key sequel to The Conversation, or, as critic Kim Newman suggests, an honorary continuation from one story to the other. Regardless of whether Enemy of the State was designed to function as a sequel or loose continuation, Hackman gives outstanding performances in both films, offering enough variation in his two portrayals of Harry Caul and Edward Lyle that no easy answers are provided.

Hackman...

‘The Haunted House of Horror’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Frankie Avalon, Richard O’Sullivan, George Sewell, Jill Haworth, Dennis Price, Mark Wynter, Gina Warwick, Carol Dilworth, Robin Stewart | Written by Michael Armstrong, Gerry Levey | Directed by Michael Armstrong

Tigon’s The Haunted House of Horror (aka Horror House) is a peculiar blend of 1960s camp, teenage angst, and Gothic horror that struggles to find its footing but still manages to intrigue. Directed by Michael Armstrong and starring Frankie Avalon, Richard O’Sullivan, and George Sewell, the film ambitiously sets out to combine youthful rebellion with the chills of a classic haunted house tale.

The story begins with a group of swinging London friends who, in search of thrills, decide to spend a night in an abandoned mansion rumoured to be haunted. What starts as playful banter quickly turns deadly when one of their number is brutally murdered. The group’s paranoia grows as they attempt to solve the mystery,...

‘Mark of the Vampire’ Blu-ray Review (Warner Archive)
Image
Stars: Bela Lugosi, Lionel Barrymore, Carroll Borland, Jean Hersholt, Lionel Atwill, Elizabeth Allan | Written by Guy Endore, Bernard Schubert | Directed by Tod Browning

Tod Browning’s 1935 film Mark of the Vampire is a compelling entry in early sound-era horror cinema, blending gothic atmosphere with an intriguing twist on vampire mythology. Renowned for its haunting visuals and surprising narrative, the film stands as both a tribute to and a playful critique of traditional horror tropes.

The film begins with a classic setup: a remote European village shrouded in superstition, a mysterious death with puncture wounds on the victim’s neck, and whispers of vampiric activity. Count Mora (Bela Lugosi) and his ghostly daughter Luna (Carroll Borland) are at the centre of the villagers’ fears. As the story unfolds, Browning masterfully subverts audience expectations, delivering a twist that shifts the narrative from supernatural horror to a detective story steeped in theatrical deception.

From Sullen Earth: ‘All the Haunts Be Ours: A Compendium of Folk Horror: Volume Two’
Image
The second volume of Severin’s All the Haunts Be Ours brings together a dizzying variety of folk horror titles—some recognized cult favorites, others hitherto obscure—that constitute a fabulist bestiary replete with witches, werewolves, and all manner of vengeful spirits. These 24 films included in the set are spread across 13 discs housed in a hardcover book, accompanied by a booklet with synopses and other information on each film, as well as an attractively illustrated 250-page “Little Severin Book” that collects 10 newly commissioned examples of folk horror fiction from authors like Kim Newman and Ramsey Campbell.

Where the first volume, also curated by author Kier-La Janisse, leaned heavily on Anglophone contributions to the subgenre, with a smattering of titles from Eastern Europe and Italy, the second casts its net wider to include a number of films from East and Southeast Asia. These include Sisworo Gautama Putra’s batshit Sundelbolong, from...

‘House of Whipcord’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: Penny Irving, Robert Tayman, Barbara Markham, Patrick Barr, Ray Brooks, Sheila Keith, Dorothy Gordon, Ann Michelle, Ivor Salter | Written by Pete Walker, David McGillivray | Directed by Pete Walker

Directed by Pete Walker, House of Whipcord is an unsettling yet engaging example of British exploitation cinema, blending horror and social commentary into a dark and disturbing narrative. It’s a film that’s both of its time and oddly timeless, as it critiques moral authoritarianism through the lens of a sadistic prison system masquerading as a reformatory for wayward young women.

Plot Overview

The story centres around a young French model, Anne-Marie (Penny Irving), who, after a string of rebellious behavior, is lured into a twisted correctional institution by her seemingly charming new boyfriend, Mark E. Desade (played with eerie charm by Robert Tayman). The institution is run by Mark’s fanatical mother, Mrs. Wakehurst (Barbara Markham), and her sadistic staff,...

‘The Curse of the Crimson Altar’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Mark Eden, Barbara Steele, Michael Gough, Virginia Wetherell, Rosemarie Reede, Derek Tansley | Written by Mervyn Haisman, Henry Lincoln, Jerry Sohl | Directed by Vernon Sewell

The Tigon-produced The Curse of the Crimson Altar is often regarded as a classic of the genre due to its eerie atmosphere and notable cast, which includes genre icons Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, and Barbara Steele. Directed by Vernon Sewell, the movie loosely adapts H.P. Lovecraft’s short story The Dreams in the Witch House but takes creative liberties in its storytelling.

The film centres around Robert Manning (Mark Eden), an antique dealer who visits a remote mansion while searching for his missing brother. He is invited by the seductive Eve (Virginia Wetherell) to stay at the mansion, which is presided over by the mysterious Morley family, led by the imposing J.D. Morley (Christopher Lee). James Watkins at an event for The Woman in Black (2012)
Speak No Evils Rotten Tomatoes Score Drops, Reviews Praise James McAvoy
James Watkins at an event for The Woman in Black (2012)
Astonishingly enough, the majority of critics are frightened, but in all the right ways by director James Watkins upcoming horror flick, Speak No Evil. The psychological thriller stars James McAvoy as the serial-killing antagonist, and the talented thespian is being heralded for giving a virtuoso performance. And despite Speak No Evils quick turnaround, as it is a reimagining of the 2022 Danish film of the same name, the American production currently registers 86% on the Tomatometer against 36 reviews. Will Sayre writes in MovieWeb's own review:

McAvoy is a force to be reckoned with. A whole book could be written about his mastery of psychotic or just unstable characters over the years, and at times, McAvoy's Paddy seems to manifest all 23 personalities from his Split/Glass films from M. Night Shyamalan simultaneously.

It's a pressure cooker of a performance, with the award-winning Scottish actor at times simply looking like he's going to burst.

Hellraiser: Arrow Video 4K set of first four films gets a North American release date

Update: Last year, Arrow Video released the first four Hellraiser films in a 4K box set called Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment. That box set is now making its way to North America, with a release date of October 22nd in the US and Canada! For information on what’s contained in the set, check out the write-up on last year’s UK release below. It appears that everything from the UK set will be included in the North American set.

The original article follows:

A couple years ago, screenwriter Peter Atkins – who worked on the scripts for the first three Hellraiser sequels – published his original screenplay for the famously troubled fourth film, Hellraiser: Bloodline (the script is available for purchase at This Link), saying, “Whilst you’ll never get to see a Director’s Cut of Hellraiser: Bloodline, you can read in this book what was supposed to be…” But...

‘Revenge of the Blood Beast’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Barbara Steele, Ian Ogilvy, John Karlsen, Mel Welles, Joe ‘Flash’ Riley, Richard Watson, Lucretia Love, Peter Grippe | Written and Directed by Michael Reeves

Revenge of the Blood Beast, also known as The She-Beast, is a 1966 horror film directed by Michael Reeves. This movie is a unique blend of Gothic horror and campy humour, which offers a curious mix of eerie atmosphere and unintentional comedy.

The story revolves around a newlywed couple, Philip and Veronica, who are honeymooning in Transylvania. They encounter an eccentric innkeeper and a deranged scientist, Count von Helsing. An ancient witch, executed centuries ago, is resurrected and possesses Veronica, leading to a series of supernatural events. Barbara Steele, known for her roles in Gothic horror films, stars as Veronica. Her performance is captivating and adds a layer of authenticity to the supernatural elements of the film. Ian Ogilvy, as Philip, delivers a solid performance, balancing the...

‘Bruiser’ 4K Uhd Review (Indicator)
Image
Stars: Jason Flemyng, Peter Stormare, Leslie Hope, Tom Atkins, Nina Garbiras, Andrew Tarbet, Jonathan Higgins | Written and Directed by George A. Romero

George A. Romero, renowned for his groundbreaking work in the horror genre, particularly his “Living Dead” series, took a distinctive turn with his 2000 film Bruiser. Stepping away from the visceral zombie apocalypse scenarios that cemented his legacy, Romero delved into a psychological thriller that explores themes of identity, revenge, and societal alienation.

Bruiser follows the story of Henry Creedlow, played by Jason Flemyng, a meek advertising executive who is perpetually exploited and humiliated by those around him. His life takes a dramatic turn when he awakens one morning to find that his face has transformed into a blank, featureless mask. This physical manifestation of his lost identity empowers him to exact revenge on those who have wronged him, from his unfaithful wife to his tyrannical boss.

The film...

‘I Walked with a Zombie’ & ‘The Seventh Victim’ Getting New 4K Release from Criterion
Image
A pair of moody horror milestones from producer Val Lewton, I Walked with a Zombie and The Seventh Victim are being paired up for a new release from The Criterion Collection.

The double feature is getting a 4K Uhd + Blu-ray combo edition as well as a Blu-ray edition and a DVD edition, with the release date for all three versions set for October 8, 2024.

Terror lives in the shadows in a pair of mesmerizingly moody horror milestones conjured from the imagination of Val Lewton, the visionary producer-auteur who turned our fears of the unseen and the unknown into haunting excursions into existential dread.

As head of Rko’s B-horror-movie unit during the 1940s, Lewton, working with directors such as Jacques Tourneur and Mark Robson, brought a new sophistication to the genre by wringing chills not from conventional movie monsters but from brooding atmosphere, suggestion, and psychosexual unease.

Suffused with ritual, mysticism,...

Severin’s Summer Sale – Full Lineup of New Releases Includes Dario Argento’s ‘Opera’ & More
Image
Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…

Opera

In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

The Cat and the Canary (1927) │ Eureka Entertainment
Image
Courtesy of Eureka Entertainment

by James Cameron-wilson

Eureka Classics have done it again and have now released the first 4K restoration copy of the original 1927 The Cat and the Canary, available for the first time on blu-ray. Considering how many prestigious silent classics have been lost forever, it is quite a treat to sit through the full 86 minutes that have been meticulous preserved of what really is a prototype of its kind. One might consider the dark house comedy-thriller a rare beast, but it was extremely popular in its day, kicked off by this hugely popular silent, made just nine months before the release of the very first feature-length talking picture, The Jazz Singer.

Looking at The Cat and the Canary today, it is emblematic of everything we know about silent cinema, with its comic intertitles, wide-eyed acting and stereotypes, but viewed more seriously it was a hugely influential title.

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers out now on 4K Uhd!
Image
The sci-fi classic Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright and Jeff Goldblum) is out now on 4K Uhd (Blu-ray) and Limited Edition Blu-ray from Arrow Video.

Remakes of great films are usually on a hiding to nothing, but Philip Kaufman’s brilliant update of the 1956 classic Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is a rare and memorable exception. Transposing the action to the heart of San Francisco allows Kaufman to retain all the suspense of Jack Finney’s original story while adding caustic social commentary about the selfishness of the 1970s “me generation” that remains all too relevant today.

But it’s a paranoid thriller first and foremost, based on one of the most psychologically terrifying of all premises – what happens when you can no longer trust not just the authorities but even your nearest and dearest?

Synopsis:

When health official Elizabeth Driscoll (Brooke Adams...

Christopher Smith at an event for Severance (2006)
Video Nasty | BBC horror comedy in the works
Christopher Smith at an event for Severance (2006)
Creep director Christopher Smith will direct episodes of horror comedy series Video Nasty for BBC Three. Here are the first details:

British director Christopher Smith has made an eclectic range of films, from the tube tunnel terror of Creep to the mind bending time loop thriller Triangle, the historical horror of Black Death to the family fun of Get Santa (an opportune moment to point out that Get Santa is a hugely underappreciated British festive movie). He returned to horror with 2020’s The Banishing, and his next film, Spider Island, looks like it will have a similarly irreverent mix of horror and comedy to his 2006 hit Severance.

According to British Comedy Guide, Smith is also set to direct episodes of Video Nasty, a new horror comedy series for BBC Three.

The story is “set in 1985, with the home video revolution in full analogue swing, Video Nasty’s six 30-minute episodes...

Patricia Laffan in Devil Girl from Mars (1954)
Devil Girl From Mars (1954) - 44243 Blu-Ray Review by Donald Munro
Patricia Laffan in Devil Girl from Mars (1954)
The restoration of Devil Girl From Mars is of a high quality. The film its self has cleaned up beautifully. It looks good as new. There are no artefacts from the digitisation process and the greys blend smoothly without any jagged lines. The sound quality is good. The film does not seem to be missing any of it's original footage.

There is a segment with Kim Newman that puts the film in some context, and an audio commentary. Both are fairly standard.

The menu system is cleanly designed and easily usable....

Cult Classic “Horrors Of The Black Museum” Debuts on Blu-ray and Digital January 2024
Image
A new restoration of the 1959 horror film on Blu-ray and DVD, and making its UK digital debut, Horrors Of The Black Museum, starring Michael Gough and directed by Arthur Crabtree (Fiend Without a Face), marked the first film in the “Sadian Trilogy”, followed by the Hammer favourite Circus of Horrors and Michael Powell’s infamous Peeping Tom – introducing cinema audiences to a more shocking and salacious brand of onscreen horror.

A series of grisly, macabre murders sweep London and leave Scotland Yard completely baffled. Bancroft, an evil crime journalist, is hypnotising his assistant to commit murders using items curated in his own personal “Black Museum” – inspired by the infamous real-life collection of weapons and torture instruments used by criminals. Using these murders to fuel his own crime stories, Bancroft delights in the Yard’s embarrassment.

One winter evening in a lonely Scottish inn, guests become prisoners when Nyah, a pitiless Martian with a robot minion, lands on earth and traps them within an invisible wall. With Martian males extinct after a battle of the sexes, Nyah aims to capture breeding stock on Earth. As escape attempts falter, the helpless humans must decide which one of them will die to save the others and possibly the world!

Anitra Ford and Marianna Hill in Messiah of Evil (1974)
Review: Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz’s Messiah of Evil on Radiance Films Blu-ray
Anitra Ford and Marianna Hill in Messiah of Evil (1974)
It’s hard to believe at first glance that the surreal Lovecraftian horrors of Messiah of Evil are courtesy of Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz, who wrote both the warm nostalgia bath that is American Graffiti and the absurd comic book antics of Howard the Duck. But there are definite similarities between these films. American Graffiti and Messiah of Evil each capture a particular milieu at the end of an era, whether that’s provincial Modesto before the Beatles and Vietnam, or a beach town being overtaken by an evil cult. And Messiah of Evil and Howard the Duck both concern a cataclysmic threat from another realm.

Messiah of Evil focuses on Arletty (Marianna Hill), a young woman who’s come to Point Dune on the California coast looking for her famous artist father, Joseph Lang (Royal Dano). She soon makes the acquaintance of raffish Thom (Michael Greer), a nomadic...

10 Greatest Classic Horror Films of the 1930s, Ranked
Image
Although the silent era produced many notable horror films, such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Phantom Carriage, and Nosferatu, the 1930s was a true Golden Age for the horror genre. Most associate 1930s horror cinema with the Universal Monster movies that produced iconic pop culture villains such as Frankenstein's Monster, Count Dracula, and the Invisible Man.

While other Hollywood studios did not necessarily specialize in horror films, they still managed to create their own influential horror movies. Internationally, filmmakers like Carl Theodor Dreyer made their own imprints on 1930s horror cinema. To this day, the horror films of the 1930s remain some of the genre's most famous works.

‘Tenebrae’ 4K Ultra HD Review – Synapse Brings Dario Argento’s Elegant Visuals to New Heights
Image
After helping to pioneer Italy’s budding giallo genre throughout the 1970s with influential titles like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, and Deep Red, Dario Argento took a brief sabbatical from the lurid thrillers to explore supernatural elements in Suspiria and Inferno. When the latter failed at the box office, he made a triumphant return to gialli in 1982 with Tenebrae (sometimes spelled Tenebre; originally released in the US as Unsane).

While his American contemporaries were trying to come up with inventive instruments of death to propel slasher films, Argento was designing more lavish ways to film his kill scenes. Suspiria remains his crowning achievement, but Tenebrae finds the filmmaker bringing his honed visual panache to the giallo sandbox in which he made a name for himself. The result stands not only as one of Argento’s strongest efforts but also a landmark giallo work.
