The role of Adira, introduced in the third season of Star Trek: Discovery (2017), is the first credited film role for Blu del Barrio.

Approximately six weeks before the premiere of the third season of Star Trek: Discovery (2017), series producers and the show's network, CBS All-Access announced the inclusion of the first trans and non-binary characters in the fifty-four year history of the Star Trek universe's franchise of TV series and movies. The roles were cast with the openly trans male actor Ian Alexander (portraying the trans male character of Gray) and non-binary actor Blu del Barrio (portraying the non-binary character Adira).
