Emma Stone on Working With Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Eddington’ and That Viral Bee Incident With Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler at Cannes
Image
Emma Stone says she’s glad she got to rehearse with Joaquin Phoenix before making “Eddington.”

But she’s not always keen on rehearsal.

“We rehearsed. We went through everything,” Stone told me Thursday at the “Eddington” premiere at the DGA in West Hollywood. “Rehearsal is a little bit of mixed bag for me sometimes. Sometimes I really really enjoy it and sometimes I’m like, ‘Oh God we’re just doing it and it’s going to ruin everything,’ but this was one of the good ones.”

Ari Aster’s “Eddington” stars Phoenix as the sheriff of a small New Mexico town during the Covid pandemic who surprises everyone when he announces – including his wife, played by Stone – that he’s going to run for mayor against the incumbent (Pedro Pascal).

Rounding out the cast are Luke Grimes, Austin Butler, Deidre O’Connell, Michael Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., Amélie Hoeferle,...

Is Emma Stone an Alien in Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Bugonia’ Trailer?
Image
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are collaborating again, this time on Bugonia, an eerie, dark-comedy remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi film Save the Green Planet!, written and directed by Jang Joon-Hwan.

The film’s synopsis from Will Tracy’s screenplay is as follows: “Two conspiracy obsessed young men (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company (Emma Stone), convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.”

In addition to Stone, Plemons and Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone round out the cast.

The trailer is equal parts unsettling, outlandish and zany. Although its veneer is sheer absurdity, the film’s essence seems to be a dark commentary on economic disparity. While it’s unclear is Stone’s character is actually an alien, she appears like an unbothered Queen Bee, unfazed by the struggling working class.

The English-language version of the Korean...

Eddington Movie Reveals Final Trailer
Image
A24 has revealed the final trailer for the Eddington movie, the upcoming Western black comedy written and directed by Ari Aster. The film had its world premiere at the main competition of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 16.

Opening in theaters on July 18, the Eddington movie has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for strong violence, some grisly images, language, and graphic nudity.

From writer-director Ari Aster comes a modern Western and paranoid thriller set in the American Southwest during the tumultuous summer of 2020. Isolated and sheltered in place, in a global pandemic, a nation under pressure found itself sifting reality through the haze of social media and lost its collective mind.

Eddington stars Joaquin Phoenix as small-town sheriff Joe Cross, who runs for mayor when progressive incumbent Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) attempts to modernize their dusty hamlet by attracting a new artificial-intelligence data center.

Hideo Kojima Will Oversee Death Stranding Film — But Won’t Interfere: “I’ll Let Them Work Without Too Much Input”
Image
Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding is branching out from video games into films, with two distinct projects in development. In a recent interview, Kojima shared details about a live-action movie and an animated feature, both expanding the unique world he created.

The live-action Death Stranding film is being crafted with A24, known for bold and creative projects. Michael Sarnoski, the director behind Pig, is set to helm the movie, with producers Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen on board.

Kojima Productions first announced the film in December 2022, partnering with Hammerstone Studios and executive producer Allan Ungar. A24 joined as co-producer in December 2023, and Sarnoski was confirmed as director in April 2025. The film is targeting a 2027 release.

Hideo Kojima to Oversee Death Stranding Movie — But Won’t Micromanage: “I’ll let them work on it without too much of my input”
Image
The Death Stranding universe is expanding fast, and Hideo Kojima is letting others take the lead, at least when it comes to the upcoming movie.

In a recent interview, Kojima talked about the live-action Death Stranding film, which is being developed with A24. The project is set to be directed by Pig filmmaker Michael Sarnoski, with producers Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen also involved.

Though Kojima is helping guide the project, he says he won’t be stepping in too much during the creative process.

“I think I will help produce it – I need to kind of guide the project – but I can’t direct it myself, schedule-wise,” Kojima said. “I made Death Stranding as a game, so in order to turn it into a movie, it’ll be something totally different. But it’s my baby, so I would like to overlook the project.”

Ari Aster made his Cannes Film Festival debut Friday with the world premiere of his latest psychological nightmare — this time a Western set in Covid times — on Friday. “Eddington” reunites the “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” filmmaker with the latter film’s Joaquin Phoenix. Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler also star.

Aster has become known as a master of the psychological horror genre following his breakout film “Hereditary,” an intense look at the consequences of inherited family trauma, in 2018. In “Eddington,” Phoenix plays local sheriff Joe Cross in a small town in New Mexico during the 2020 Covid pandemic. Cross comes to a head with Pedro Pascal’s Ted Garcia, the town’s mayor who leads the community into a world of chaos with his questionable decision-making. Deadline is reporting that Jeremy Allen White and Austin Butler will be going head-to-head in an upcoming crime drama from A24. White, who is a two-time Emmy-winner for his series The Bear, is set to star in Enemies opposite Academy Award-nominee Austin Butler. Enemies is the new film from Henry Dunham, who previously directed another crime thriller with 2018’s The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, which follows a former cop-turned-militia man who investigates a shooting at a police funeral.

Per Deadline, Enemies is about a relentless detective and an infamous contract killer who collide in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Bugonia’ Starring Emma Stone & Jesse Plemons Shifts Into Halloween Release
Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Emma Stone, Christopher Abbott, Ramy Youssef, and Jerrod Carmichael in Poor Things (2023)
Focus Features announced today that Bugonia, the latest film from Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos, has been bumped from its November release date in favor of Halloween.

Bugonia will receive a special limited engagement on October 24, ahead of a wide expansion theatrically on October 31, 2025. Bugonia was initially slated for November 7 release.

The weeklong cinematic event will feature screenings of the film, which was shot in VistaVision, at select locations in New York and Los Angeles.

The film follows “two conspiracy-obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced she is an alien intent on destroying Planet Earth.”

While that may sound more conspiracy thriller, Bugonia is an English-language remake of 2003’s Korean genre-bender Save the Green Planet!, an off-beat, black comedy-sci-fi mashup written and directed by Jang Joon-Hwan. It’s full of shocking moments and unexpected twists, but it’s also a darkly funny movie that suits Lanthimos’ style well.

Mexican costume designer Anna Terrazas says the uniqueness of Albuquerque, New Mexico helped her understand the “essence” of Ari Aster’s upcoming Eddington.

Speaking to Screen after her masterclass at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra lab, Terrazas said, “I sent Ari a huge amount of research, and a lot of things did work; but the essence wasn’t truly there. So I had to arrive to Albuquerque [where the film shot] and go out to the streets and towns, just to see what was happening – that place is unique.”

“If people describe it to you, it’s not the same,” said Terrazas. “You...

Focus Creates A Buzz With First Footage Of Emma Stone In ‘Bugonia’ – CinemaCon
Image
Focus Features rolled out new footage from some of its highly anticipated upcoming films during its portion of Universal’s CinemaCon presentation Wednesday, including a quick teaser for Yorgos Lanthimos’ next movie Bugonia. The film is a reteam for Lanthimos and his Kinds of Kindness stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons and hits domestic theaters November 7.

The story follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced she is an alien intent on destroying Planet Earth. In the footage shown today were ample musings on and shots of honey bees, as well as Stone’s CEO literally having her hair buzzed off.

This was fitting after Focus president Peter Kujawski reminded the CinemaCon audience that he last year called specialty films “the honey bees of the movie business who are pollinating the future.” Today, he added movie theaters to that equation. He also said, “We...

Yorgos Lanthimos Film ‘Bugonia’ Reveals First Look at CinemaCon With (A Bald) Emma Stone
Image
Focus Features used part of its CinemaCon presentation to debut the first look at Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film, Bugonia.

Bugonia stars frequent (and Oscar winning) collaborator Emma Stone opposite Jesse Plemons with whom she starred in Lanthimos’s last film Kinds of Kindness. The script from Will Tracy follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. In what turned out to be a very brief teaser, the footage opened with scenes from a garden showing colorful flowers and buzzing bees flying to and fro. An ominous voiceover can be heard detailing the “magnificent” process of pollination. “The workers gather pollen for the queen,” he says. “A third of our food is pollinated this way, but the bees are dying.” The voiceover continues...

‘Death of a Unicorn’ Filmmaker Talks Jenna Ortega’s Well-Timed Casting and Robert Eggers’ Influence
Image
Death of a Unicorn’s Alex Scharfman knows he’s fortunate to be able to say that his feature directorial debut is an A24 film that’s led by Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. But the writer-director has more than paid his dues the last 15-plus years, mainly as a producer, all while refining the craft of screenwriting. Along the way, Rudd, through their shared manager, took notice of a Scharfman-penned script called The Cats of Baxley, which Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey had possession of at the time. From there, Rudd indirectly encouraged Scharfman to write something with him in mind, and that something eventually took on the form of Death of a Unicorn.

The creature feature centers around father-daughter, Elliot (Rudd) and Ridley Kintner (Jenna Ortega), as they journey to the mountainside lodge of Elliot’s Sackler-esque employer, the Leopolds. While en route to the intimate company retreat,...

Zendaya Calmed Down Robert Pattinson After 'The Drama' Drove Him "Crazy"
Image
Robert Pattinson has revealed that his co-star Zendaya had to calm him down after he found himself "going crazy for three days" ahead of filming a scene for Kristoffer Borgli's upcoming A24 movie The Drama, which follows a couple whose relationship takes an unexpected turn before their wedding day. Pattinson admitted to getting cold feet ahead of filming as he got hung up on the dialogue when he was reading through the script, believing there was a deeper interpretation that he was neglecting, which cast some doubt on the scene for him.

Pattinson certainly seems to be in tune with his emotions, having recently shared that he is now "too sensitive" to watch a certain type of movie, but in an interview with the French magazine Premiere via IndieWire, the versatile actor explained how he started spiralling ahead of shooting a scene for The Drama, prompting him to reach out to Zendaya,...
