“Nothing happens in a vacuum,” notes Dcs Ian St. Clair (David Morrissey) in one of several police press conferences which punctuate the return of gritty crime drama “Sherwood” to BritBox (November 14). “There is such a thing as a mood or a culture that is hard to see, hard to define. But it can grip a place.” On this occasion, it’s not the deep-seated divisions stemming from a 1980s miners’ strike that has the stranglehold, but a middle-aged matriarch hellbent on exacerbating a bitter turf war.
It’s a pivot which both justifies a second helping – most of its BAFTA-nominated predecessor’s loose ends appeared to have been tied up – and helps fill the void opened up by another naturalistic, nail-biting BBC saga. Of course, its first season already had plenty in common with Sally Wainwright’s “Happy Valley”; an instinctive grasp of its Northern England surroundings, for example, and...

“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” Thus spoke Jesus on the Mount of Olives, when confronted by a woman charged with adultery. We are all sinners, he proclaimed, our judgement skewed. This is also the position seemingly held by Frances Poletti, creator of twisty new ITV four-parter Without Sin. There’s some Biblical-level forgiveness required in this drama about the fallout from a teenage girl’s murder.

The first-look trailer for female-led anthology series “I Am” sees Gemma Chan, Vicky McClure and Samantha Morton performing in the much-anticipated show for Channel 4 in the U.K.
The series consists of three separate stories, each bearing the name of its lead character. It comes from BAFTA-winning writer and director Dominic Savage, who asked the actors to draw on personal experience and improvise rather than working strictly from the script. The stories for each film were developed with the leading performers, with themes including relationships, identity and empowerment.
McClure, fresh off the success of BBC drama “Line of Duty,” has the opening story. In “I Am Nicola,” she stars opposite Perry Fitzpatrick (“This Is England ’90”) in a story of a dysfunctional and coercive relationship. “Every day we created moments we didn’t know existed until we were in the moment,” McClure said. “This is what is so unique working with Dominic.

Us Brits do comedy horror pretty well. Of course, everyone around the world knows about Shaun of the Dead but there’s along list of other great films in the sub genre. From Lesbian Vampire Killers to Severance to Doghouse to Inbred to Stitches to Sightseers. These cover all different types of comedy and horror too, so Killer Weekend does have plenty of competition (or good company).
As well as comedy horror, people from Britain are also known for being pretty good at ‘Stag do’s’ (bachelor parties) and Killer Weekend mixes both of these together. A group of friends and the father of the bride embark on a paint-ball war against the undead only things don’t go as...
[Note: With the film now finally available on VOD in the UK, here's a reposting of our Frightfest review of Fubar, now retitled and released under the Frightfest Presents... banner as Killer Weekend]

Last week, This Is England '90 served up a comparatively breezy opener - the calm before the storm, as actor Andrew Shim (Milky) remarked of Shane Meadows' work: "There's always going to be a dark day coming at some point."
Episode two again opens with a comic sequence; the charismatic Harvey - now Woody's replacement as the group's de-facto leader - pokes fun at the hapless Gadget, and there's some laugh-out-loud delivery from the show's secret weapon, Michael Socha ("There's a f**king bag within a bag here, dude!").
It's the summer of love, 1990, and rave culture is sweeping the nation - again, Meadows delivers more sunshine and happiness than we're accustomed to, and is still aiming for big, broad laughs with the continued presence of Flip and Higgy (even if Joe Dempsie's underplayed idiocy remains more effective than Perry Fitzpatrick's more excessive antics).
But that sickening...

"De-de-de-ding-ding / dig-a-dig-a-ding / a-flinky-flonk / wanky-shank ding-dong."
So this is England, 1990 - and Shane Meadows' latest follow-on from his 2006 film appears, on the surface, to be the saga's sunniest outing to date.
Our first reunion with the gang - 2010's This Is England '86 - was perhaps the most bleak. Replete with rape, murder and betrayal, it was to be admired rather than enjoyed.
The following year's '88 didn't spare the heartbreak either, but ended on a more optimistic note - and the beginning of '90 follows through on that, kicking off with a more positive outlook.
First episode 'Spring' - the four episodes being divided into the four seasons - opens with some good-natured larks, as Gadget (Andrew Ellis), Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) and Milky (Andrew Shim) wangle a free school lunch off of dinner lady kitchen boss Lol (Vicky McClure).
Milky's insistence that "the good times will come again" is...
