The Cut: Orlando Bloom packs on the pounds in the disturbingly instense trailer for Sean Ellis’ boxing drama
Orlando Bloom
There’s no shortage of boxing dramas in Hollywood, but only one features Orlando Bloom pushing himself beyond the limit. At the same time, John Tuturro makes Burgess Meredith’s Mickey from Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky look like a pussy cat in the relentlessly intense trailer for The Cut.

Anthropoid and Metro Manila director Sean Ellis directs The Cut from a screenplay by Justin Bull, based on a story by Mark Lane. The official synopsis for The Cut reads: After a career-ending defeat, a former champion trains for redemption – but as obsession takes hold and reality unravels, he may be spiraling into something far more terrifying.

Floating like a butterfly into theaters on September 5, 2025, The Cut stars Orlando Bloom, John Turturro, and Caitríona Balfe.

In the trailer for The Cut, Orlando Bloom’s boxer character has six days to gain 26 pounds if he wants to qualify for an upcoming title fight.

[Trailer] Orlando Bloom Drops 52 Pounds in Intense Transformation for Boxing Drama ‘The Cut’
Image
Orlando Bloom has shocked fans by revealing he dropped an incredible 52 pounds in just three months for his new boxing drama The Cut. Speaking to Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, Bloom explained how he transformed his body for the role.

In the film, directed by Sean Ellis, Bloom plays a retired boxer making a comeback to fight for a championship title. His character undergoes an extreme weight-cutting program under the guidance of a tough, unorthodox coach, played by John Turturro.

“I basically tiered down the food over a three-month period until just before filming, when I was at my lightest,” Bloom said. “I dropped 52 pounds, and I was about 185 when I started. So I dropped quite a lot of weight, and I was very mentally challenged as well. You feed somebody tuna and cucumber long enough…”

Orlando Bloom has undergone one of the most intense transformations of his career, losing 52 pounds in just three months for his new boxing drama The Cut. The film, directed by Sean Ellis, follows a retired boxer who comes back to fight for a championship title and is pushed through a brutal weight-cutting routine by his extreme coach, played by John Turturro.

Speaking to Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered on September 5, Bloom explained how he prepared for the role.

The Cursed (2021)
The #1 Horror Movie on Netflix is Star-Studded and Has “Insanely cool special effects”
The Cursed (2021)
Werewolf movies are hard to get right. The creature design and transformation sequences are crucial to the success of these films, yet both are notoriously expensive to render. As such, there are a handful of classic lycanthrope pictures that we keep going back to, but few recent efforts seem to stand the test of time.

With that said, there are at least a handful of contemporary werewolf films that get more right than wrong. At least one such example seems to have flown largely under the radar thanks to a lackluster showing at the box office.

I’m talking about The Cursed. The film, which sometimes gets mistaken for Wes Craven’s Cursed, plays out like this: In 19th-century France, a man arrives in a remote country village to investigate an attack by a wild animal. However, he soon discovers a much deeper and sinister force that has the manor...

The Number One Horror Movie on Netflix is an “Ambitious gem”
Image
Werewolves are popping off. While it was met with mixed reviews, there was a lot I liked about Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man (now streaming on Peacock) this year. Next year, we have Robert Eggers’ Werewulf to look forward to. With Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe, Werewulf is as much a werewolf movie as it is a Nosferatu reunion. Oh, and Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves, which was released last year, is worth a look, despite not quite getting the acclaim it deserved.

Werewolves, vampires, mummies – we are practically in the midst of a Universal renaissance. It’s a glorious time to be a horror fan, especially a horror fan raised on the movie monster classics. Better still, it’s always refreshing to see these classic tales refracted through a modern lens. One of the best to do so was a surprise Sundance hit that successfully managed a wide theatrical release.

Yellowstone Star's Underrated Gothic Horror Movie Is Now A Hit On Netflix
Image
An underseen gothic horror starring Yellowstone’sKelly Reilly has found belated success on Netflix. Reilly portrayed Beth, the only daughter of John and Evelyn Dutton, opposite Kevin Costner on the hit TV Western from 2018 to 2024. However, Reilly’s career also includes appearances across genres in everything from Sherlock Holmes to True Detective.

As an actress whose career boasts acclaimed roles in both film and television, Reilly has had several underrated performances in lesser-known projects. Now, thanks to streaming's power to shine a new light on underappreciated releases, one chilling 2021 horror is gaining a second lease on life as it’s shot up the Netflix streaming charts.

Director Sean Ellis has had an unusual career; if it seems like his fellow Brits, David Mackenzie and Kevin Macdonald have been genre-agnostic, Ellis has taken things a step farther. He remains best known for the deeply affecting drama Metro Manila, which is essentially a foreign-language film. But a few years ago, he tried his hand at horror. He directed the werewolf movie The Cursed, starring Kelly Reilly and Boyd Holbrook, and while the film didn't make much of a dent at the box office, it's climbing up the streaming ranks following its Netflix debut.

According to FlixPatrol, The Cursed was the sixth-most-popular film on Netflix in the United States on July 20, beating the likes of Brick, Penguins of Madagascar, Despicable Me 4, and The Old Guard 2. That's quite a diverse slate of titles for any film to outperform, let alone one that barely got a theatrical release despite being designed for one.

The Cut Review: A Gritty Glimpse Beyond the Glamor
Sean Ellis at the NY premiere of Anthropoid
While the trailers set up The Cut as another run-of-the-mill boxing rehabilitation story, director Sean Ellis had bigger ambitions. His film focuses less on fights and more on the rigorous preparations between rounds.

At its heart is Orlando Bloom’s gripping performance as a worn-out Irish boxer desperate for one final title shot. But to get in the ring, he must first wage a dangerous battle many have never seen—dropping over 30 pounds in just one week—to qualify for the match.

We’re introduced to Bloom’s character a decade after blowing a championship. Now running a small gym, an offer arises to replace an injured fighter. But he’s well over the weight limit. So our boxer and his coach Caitlin travel to Las Vegas, embarking on an unflinching look at extreme weight cutting.

What follows isn’t a stylized training montage either. Ellis immerses us in the relentless physicality,...

Orlando Bloom Discusses Dangerous Weight-Cut For New Boxing Drama The Cut
Image
Orlando Bloom is far from the first actor to play a boxer on the big screen, but the star of the upcoming drama The Cut certainly faced a unique challenge in preparing for the role. Boxing dramas often tell a classic underdog story, where an unranked fighter receives the opportunity of a lifetime, usually fighting for some kind of championship belt. The movies usually show their hard upbringing, before jumping to a kick-ass training montage, and then leaping to the big fight. But a lot of boxing films leave out one of the most grueling parts of being a professional fighter, the weight cut. That's something Sean Ellis' The Cut is looking to rectify.

Orlando Bloom said the grueling physical and mental challenges he faced losing 33 pounds left him “out of sorts” while preparing for his role as a washed-up fighter in Sean Ellis’ boxing drama “The Cut.”

Bloom, best known for starring in franchises like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Lord of the Rings,” detailed his grueling three-month regime prior to filming during an interview with TheWrap’s Steve Pond at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design. His preparation involved not just physical training but also a strict dietary plan overseen by his nutritionist.

“You’re tired because you’re not really sleeping because you’re not eating a lot. I had to restrict carbohydrates, and I was working with this great nutritionist and he had me on a very tight regime,” Bloom said.”I’m about 185 and I dropped to 152 pounds.”

‘The Cut’ Review: It’s Not the Punching That Hurts Orlando Bloom, It’s the Dieting
Image
For about five minutes, “The Cut” gives the audience what they’d expect from a movie set in the world of boxing. A fighter played by Orlando Bloom is in the ring, and the action is ferocious, and ferociously photographed in bruising closeups. The punches are thunderous, the blood flows, and you know just what you’re going to get: another tough drama about an over-the-hill boxer getting one last shot at the big time.

And then director Sean Ellis and writer Justin Bull pull the rug out from under the audience – because that opening sequence in the ring is the last time boxing action is going to be center stage in “The Cut.” From there, it becomes a boxing drama in which the focus isn’t the fight, it’s the weigh-in, and in which the real violence isn’t the punching, it’s the dieting.

“The Cut,” which...

The Cut Review: Orlando Bloom Takes A Hit In A Physically & Psychologically Taxing Sports Drama
Image
The Cut is a heavy film. From the opening scene, which sees Nick (Orlando Bloom) in a brutal boxing match, the film is already layered with intensity. He loses the fight after a devastating cut to his eye and director Sean Ellis fast-forwards to ten years later. With that one scene setting the stage, it was only a matter of time before Nicks trauma would come around, gripping The Cut so hard without easing up. This overreliance on Nicks trauma aided by multiple flashbacks to his childhood and relationship with his mother (Clare Dunne) was taxing.

A few days after Ian McKellen expressed interest in returning as Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s new live-action “Lord of the Rings” movies, his co-star Orlando Bloom is adding his name to the list.

When asked by Variety if he was interested in returning to the Tolkien franchise, the Legolas actor said, “Oh, man, those things are amazing. Yeah. I don’t know how they’d do it. I guess with AI you can do anything these days. But, if Pete [Peter Jackson] says jump, I say, ‘how high?’ I mean, he started my whole career.”

Orlando Bloom And Sean Ellis Talk About Star’s Transformation Into Past-His-Prime Boxer In ‘The Cut’: “He Was Willing To Have His Nose Broken” – Toronto Film Festival
Image
Sean Ellis’s sixth feature, following the deliriously atmospheric 19th-century vampire movie Eight for Silver (2021), is yet another curveball from the criminally underrated British director. Titled The Cut, it is the story of a past-his-prime boxer who goes behind his wife Caitlin’s back to accept a lucrative comeback fight in Las Vegas. But this is not yet another Rocky-style underdog story, the kind that culminates in the ring. Instead, it is a sometimes-shocking psychological thriller, a sort of boxing procedural that details the extreme lengths that cornered fighters will go to. On paper, it sounds like Southpaw, but in reality, it has a little more in common with this year’s Cannes hit The Substance, a visceral body-horror movie about a fading starlet (Demi Moore) and her desperate drive to maintain her fame.

In The Cut it is actor Orlando Bloom’s turn to defy expectations. As the boxer,...

Eight For Silver, Netflix, from Easter Monday

If the news that Leigh Whannell's Wolfman has been delayed until 2025 has left you howling, then this werewolf twist on the myth should help. Released in cinemas under the much more boring title The Cursed, Sean Ellis' atmospheric period horror is thankfully back under its old moniker for its Netflix release. A silver bullet extracted from a dead man near the start of the film, clues us into the territory we're entering as the film moves back in time to his childhood in rural France. When his heartless father massacres a Romany settlement, the children start to have nightmares... and then begin to disappear. As pathologist John McBride (Boyd Holbrook) suspects something supernatural is at work, Ellis plays around with the werewolf myth that draws on the idea of a beast consuming you from within.

Image
Some bonds develop unexpectedly, transcending the limits of professional collaborations. For Irish actor Cillian Murphy, known for his enigmatic roles and intense performances, one such unexpected bromance took center stage, not with Jamie Dornan, but with the iconic filmmaker, Christopher Nolan.

Irish actors Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy might seem like a natural match. After all, they hail from the same land and even broke out into the public eye around the same time with 50 Shades of Grey and Peaky Blinders, respectively. However, despite their initial admiration for each other’s work, Murphy’s true bromance bloomed with someone else entirely: Hollywood Auteur Christopher Nolan.

This Period Piece That Fails as a Horror Movie Is Still Worth Watching
Image
The Cursed debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021 under the title Eight for Silver. It was renamed for the theatrical release in February 2022. The film tells the story of John McBride (Boyd Holbrook), a traveling pathologist investigating strange deaths and disappearances on nobleman Seamus Laurent’s (Alistair Petrie) land. Yellowstone's Kelly Reilly stars as Seamus' wife, Isabel. The Cursed was written, directed, and produced by Oscar-nominated director Sean Ellis. Ellis attempts to bring new life into the old-school story of werewolves through a combination of a period piece and a horror film. While The Cursed successfully handles the period piece portion of its genre, the horror is ineffective, repetitive, and overly derivative.

Sean Ellis at the NY premiere of Anthropoid
Eight For Silver (2021) - 38401 DVD Review by Jennie Kermode
Sean Ellis at the NY premiere of Anthropoid
The main extra here is a Behind The Scenes featurette, which is short but includes contributions from several cast members as well as director Sean Ellis, sharing their thoughts on the film and why they got involved with it. There's also a chance to see the monster in action - wheels and all - and there's some discussion of its design.

In addition to this, the disc includes the theatrical trailer, which features some great editing, patching together the scariest bits of the film but managing not to spoil its surprises. This is a tricky task and it's rare to see it accomplished so well.

The menu is simple and easy to use. The only real problem is that the volume is significantly higher in the extras than in the film itself, so you will need to be ready with the remote control....

The Meaning Behind Dexter’s New Fake Identity
Image
The meaning of the fake name that Dexter Morgan uses in Dexter: New Blood pays tribute to the serial killer character’s origins. When Dexter returned in New Blood, he was introduced under an entirely new name and persona in Iron Lake, New York after fleeing Miami, Florida. A decade after faking his death, Dexter's protagonist was going by the alias James “Jim” Lindsay, an act that he would keep up until being exposed shortly before his death in New Blood's finale.

As a serial killer who had to anonymously introduce himself to potential victims or purchase items that couldn’t be traced back to him, Harry's Code dictated that Dexter Morgan had to come up with plenty of fake identities in the original series. Some of Dexter’s most notable aliases included Kyle Butler (to Arthur Mitchell’s family), Daryl Tucker, Sean Ellis, Patrick Bateman, M.D., and Dave Cutler.

Aftershock (Tonya Lewis Lee and Paula Eiselt)

A work of deep pain and fervent justice, Tonya Lewis Lee and Paula Eiselt’s Sundance winner Aftershock examines the failings of maternal health support particularly as it relates to Black mothers. Centering on two NYC families forever torn apart after maternal deaths due to childbirth-related complications, the film takes an intimate look at the widowers and family left behind as they pick up the pieces to fight for change in a prejudiced system. Amongst its most interesting passages, the filmmakers also go back decades and beyond, filling in the historical foundation for how we ended up with our current, faltering maternal health system and setting the stage for how it can be changed.

Film Review: Metro Manila (2013) by Sean Ellis
Image
‘Metro Manila‘ is the story of a good man in a bad world. All elements in the movie seems to stem from that core principle and the only question left for the story to answer is if a good man can remain good when all odds are piled against him. And, except for the unconditional love of a family, I really mean all odds. Right off the bat, Oscar Ramirez (Jake Macapagal), an ex-military turned farmer, is forced by the severe rural economic crisis to sell all his few belongings and start anew with his family in the fascinating and colorful chaos of Manila, a gritty and chaotic megalopolis where dreams seems to be forged. Unfortunately, as soon he will discover, the city specializes in bad dreams. The relentless, unmerciful, dog-eat-dog pulse of the streets beats the hope out of the Ramirez family bit by bit, bite by bite, until...
