“We weren’t able to secure the rights”: Ari Aster Wanted an Iconic Jay-Z Song For Eddington’s Iconic Fight Scene
Image
That unforgettable fight scene in Eddington, where Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) storms Ted’s (Pedro Pascal) party and gets slapped mid-Katy Perry anthem, almost looked and sounded very different. Yep, you heard it right. Turns out, Ari Aster, the creator behind the movie, originally wanted Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ Empire State of Mind to soundtrack the chaos.

Imagine that the New York anthem is blaring in a dusty New Mexico mayoral face-off. Aster admitted in an interview with Roger Ebert,

We weren’t able to secure the rights, and I really wasn’t expecting to, because it’s such a huge song, but then we spent a lot of time experimenting with different songs in that scene, and “Firework” just fit.

Honestly? It is perfect. The irony of Ted losing his mind over a pop power ballad makes the moment even more delicious.

Jay-Z’s Billboard-Smashing Anthem Almost Scored Eddington...

‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Hit by Yet Another Delay
Image
The wait for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse just got longer. Again. Sony has decided to delay the movie once more, pushing its release back by three weeks. Instead of swinging into theaters on June 4, 2027, it’s now set for June 25, 2027.

According to Variety, Sony made the change so more kids could watch the movie during summer vacation. On the original date, only 65% of schools in the US would have been on break.

By late June, that jumps to 100%. Sony is also hoping this new date works better for international viewers.

This isn’t the first delay for the movie. In fact, fans have been dealing with delays since the film was first announced years ago. Originally, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was expected to release in 2024, but that date kept slipping. First to 2025. Then possibly 2026. And now finally, 2027. Even the latest delay adds to what’s become a long string of setbacks.

Not a glitch! Inside the massive ‘Black Mirror’ Emmys comeback
Image
If you correctly predicted that Season 7 of Black Mirror would receive 10 Emmy nominations, you might be living on another planet ... or in a computer simulation ... or maybe both.

Netflix's long-running science-fiction anthology series had fallen into an awards rut, with Season 6 only garnering three noms in 2024, and Season 5 earning just a single bid in 2020. That's a far cry from the halcyon days of 2017-19, when it won eight Emmy Awards. Black Mirror's impressive showing this week can rightly be called an Emmys comeback, considering that 10 nominations is more than any of its prior seasons or stand-alone movies.

Blame the name game

In recent years, it's likely that category confusion led to Television Academy members struggling to properly determine where Black Mirror was eligible, which seemed to change on a season-to-season basis. For the 2025 Emmys and 2024 Emmys, Black Mirror was eligible in Best Limited or Anthology Series, a category...

Beyoncé and Jay-Z to Compete Against Each Other for an Emmy This Year
Image
Beyoncé is facing some particularly familiar competition for an Emmy this year: her own husband.

As the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, both Queen Bey and Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) were listed as nominees in the outstanding variety special (live) category; Beyoncé for her Beyoncé Bowl halftime show for the NFL’s Christmas Day game on Netflix, and Jay as one of the executive producers for Kendrick Lamar’s Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show.

It’s hard to track how many times a husband and wife have ever competed against one another in the same Emmy category in the past, though it’s certainly not a common occurrence.

Both Beyoncé and Lamar’s halftime shows were critically lauded and groundbreaking. Beyoncé performed the first-ever Christmas Day NFL halftime show, while Lamar broke records for the most-viewed Super Bowl halftime show of all time with over 133 million viewers.

Emmys’ Music Nominations: Father-Daughter Duo Thomas and Julia Newman Make History; Hans Zimmer Could Finally Score a Win
Image
A father-daughter composing team was nominated, Hans Zimmer could win his first Emmy, and a music supervisor was nominated for three different shows — just some of the surprises among nominations for the 2024-2025 Emmys unveiled Tuesday morning by the Television Academy.

Thomas Newman and his daughter Julia Newman were nominated for their music for Netflix’s miniseries “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” a first in Emmy history for a two-generation, same-family collaboration on a single television score. And in another musical-family story, Oscar and Emmy winner Michael Giacchino’s son Mick Giacchino was nominated for his original music for HBO’s “The Penguin.”

Zimmer, who has two Oscars and four Grammys, has never won an Emmy but could this year with his nomination in the documentary music category for NBC’s “The Americas” (shared with fellow composers Anze Rozman and Kara Talve).

Music supervisor Gabe Hilfer dominated the...

Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Deirdre O'Connell, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Austin Butler, and Micheal Ward in Eddington (2025)
The Polarizing Response Towards ‘Eddington’ May Worry Diehard Ari Aster Fans
Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Deirdre O'Connell, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Austin Butler, and Micheal Ward in Eddington (2025)
The Premise Of ‘Eddington’ “In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico” (IMDb). Joaquin Phoenix is reuniting with his ‘Beau is Afraid’ director to star as mayoral hopeful, Sheriff Joe Cross. Newcomers to the world of Ari Aster include Pedro Pascal as incumbent mayor, Ted Garcia, Emma Stone as Joe’s wife, Louise, and Austin Butler as a radical cult leader, Vernon Jefferson Peak. Supporting players Deirdre O’Connell, Michael Ward, and Luke Grimes round out the cast. Emma Stone and Christopher Abbott were two of the first actors originally announced to star in ‘Eddington’, but Abbot had to step down and was replaced by Butler as the cult leader. Abbott is a great screen presence, so it will be interesting to see whether this replacement was for the better or worse when it comes out.

MSNBC’s ‘The Sing Sing Chronicles’ Takes Top Prize on Night 2 of News and Docs Emmys
Image
On night two of the 46th News & Documentary Emmy Awards Thursday night, MSNBC took home the night’s biggest prize, Best Documentary, for “The Sing Sing Chronicles.”

But at the ceremony focused on documentary programming, National Geographic led all winners with six award, taking home Outstanding Historical Documentary and Outstanding Nature Documentary among others. Netflix followed, with two programming wins (Outstanding Business and Economic Documentary and Outstanding Investigative Documentary) and two craft wins (Outstanding Cinematography — Documentary and Outstanding Light Direction — Documentary).

PBS historically does well on the second night of the annual ceremony, often leading the pack in documentary programming with series like “Frontline,” “Pov” and “Independent Lens.” Tonight’s two documentary programming wins brought the network’s two total to 19 this decade. They also saw three Gold/Silver Circle inductees — this amid President Donald Trump’s calls to cut the network’s funding.

Jon Else received the night’s Lifetime Achievement Award for documentary,...

Lalo Schifrin, Legendary Mission: Impossible And Dirty Harry Composer, Dies Aged 93
Image
Lalo Schifrin, the five-time Grammy-winning composer of the Mission: Impossible theme and six-time Oscar nominated maestro on movies such as Dirty Harry, Cool Hand Luke, and Bullitt, has sadly died at the age of 93. As reported by Variety, the Argentine-American multi-instrumentalist passed away earlier today of complications related to pneumonia.

Born into a musical family in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 21 June, 1932, it wouldn't be inaccurate to say that music was in Boris Claudio Schifrin's blood. His father, Luis Schifrin, was the concertmaster of Buenos Aires' Philharmonic Orchestra, and by the tender age of just six, young Lalo had already begun a six-year course studying piano. Even a spell studying sociology and law at university as a young man couldn't distract Schifrin from his true calling: by the age of 20, Lalo — who had developed a particular love for jazz as a boy — found himself playing piano by night in the...

Ari Aster’s ‘Eddington’ Drops New Trailer for His Wild Neo-Western Set During the Pandemic

Known for making unsettling horror films like Hereditary and Midsommar, Aster has now made something different—a dark comedy with a Western vibe set in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Eddington takes place in a small fictional town in New Mexico during May 2020, right when the pandemic was in full swing. The story centers around Sheriff Joe Cross, played by Joaquin Phoenix, and Mayor Ted Garcia, played by Pedro Pascal.

These two men don’t get along, and when their conflict reaches a boiling point, it throws the whole town into chaos. Emma Stone plays Joe’s wife Louise, and Austin Butler shows up as a mysterious outsider named Vernon Jefferson Peak. It’s not really clear what Vernon wants, and that adds more tension to the mix.

A24 Drops Trailer for Ari Aster’s Covid Western Eddington
Ari Aster at an event for Hereditary (2018)
A24 released the first full trailer for Ari Aster’s Eddington on June 10, heightening anticipation for the pandemic-era Western ahead of its July 18 U.S. release.

The footage, shared across A24’s social channels and YouTube, quickly drew hundreds of thousands of views as fans dissected a sequence of Joaquin Phoenix’s sheriff unleashing gunfire down an empty main street.

Phoenix faces Pedro Pascal’s mayor in a small New Mexico town where Covid-19 mandates ignite a culture war—a plot Aster says he wrote while trapped in “a state of fear and anxiety about the world” during lockdown.

Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes and Deirdre O’Connell round out a cast that The Playlist calls the filmmaker’s “most star-studded ensemble.”

After premiering in competition at Cannes on May 16, the 145-minute film divided reviewers; The Guardian dismissed it as “bafflingly dull,” while Time labeled it a “wigged-out modern Western overstuffed with ideas.

Mountainhead Review: Deepfakes and Deep Trouble
Image
Jesse Armstrong steps behind the camera for the first time, shifting from the razor-sharp corporate intrigues of Succession into a self-contained chamber piece. As both writer and director, he’s assembled a lean production team that mirrors his television craft, trading boardrooms for a sprawling Utah estate that resembles equal parts Dr. Strangelove war room and Ayn Rand pastiche.

At its core, Mountainhead strands four tech-industry magnates in isolation just as Venis (Cory Michael Smith) unleashes a new deep-fake engine that ignites global unrest. The result is a weekend retreat turned high-stakes crisis, in which the gulf between profiteering impulses and real-world chaos widens with each pinging phone alert.

The drama pivots on collisions of ego and ethics: Venis, the Musk-style provocateur; Randall (Steve Carell), a venture veteran wrestling with mortality and digital immortality; Jeff (Ramy Youssef), whose “bullshit-detector” AI offers moral counterweight; and Hugo “Souper” (Jason Schwartzman), the under-funded...

‘Eddington’ Review: Ari Aster’s Explosive, Satirical Neo-Western Takes A Big Swing At Maga Culture – Cannes Film Festival
Image
How do you make a satirical movie about modern America when the news that comes out of there every day is quite literally beyond a joke? Ari Aster is one of the rare directors willing to go there, and his new film Eddington is extraordinary not only for that but for depicting a slice of history that we have yet to see properly shown on film, even though it happened only five years ago. Dressed up as a neo-noir Western, this pandemic saga drips with the kind of biting, dark political humor hardly seen much since the heyday of screenwriter and novelist Terry Southern, author of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove.

The setting — late May 2020 — is crucial: Covid-19 has just become a thing, and the residents of Eddington in Sevilla County are getting used to life with masks and social distancing. Most comply, but others are skeptical, including Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), who,...

'Beyond The Spider-Verse's Delay Is a Good Thing, Actually
Image
Back in June 2023, Sony announced that the final film in the beloved Spider-Verse trilogy, titled Beyond the Spider-Verse, would be in theaters by March 2024. However, due to the strikes by SAG-AFTRA and WGA, this deadline was deemed too soon for writers and animators to finish on. This, in addition to the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse, made fans especially nervous about the series' conclusion. But waiting a bit longer for the final release is a small price to pay if it increases the possibility for a quality ending to the series.

The first film, Into the Spider-Verse, was celebrated for its revolutionary animation style and its extremely fitting soundtrack and score in 2018. Across the Spider-Verse took these elements to a new level, incorporating many more animation techniques and even creating completely new ones to fit its expansive cast of characters. Both movies took upwards of 3–4 years to make, even with a large,...

I Can't Believe Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse's Newest Update Means We Could Be Getting 2 Spider-Man Movies In 1 Year
Image
The latest Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse update could mean that we’ll get two Spider-Man films in one year, and that just makes me even more excited. Spider-Man has always been one of the most popular Marvel heroes, which is why every iteration of him has done so well at the box office and amongst fans. The MCU’s version of the hero has been especially well-received, and Sony also churned out an unexpected hit with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018. With both franchises currently working on a future installment, the anticipation has been higher than ever.

However, Beyond the Spider-Verse has faced some obstacles during production. The original release date for Beyond the Spider-Verse was set for March 29, 2024, but issues during production had it delayed. The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike postponed work on the film even further, and Sony eventually removed Beyond the Spider-Verse from its slate until a certain...

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Gets A Disappointing Release Date Update
Image
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has received a major release update. Miles Morales' animated adventures have earned Sony several awards and two movies that fared quite well at the box office. Both films are among the best Spider-Man movies of all time, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse being set up to be a multiverse event like no other. The Spider-Verse trilogy finale was initially scheduled for a March 29th, 2024, release. However, the Sony Marvel movie was indefinitely delayed, being taken off the studio's release schedule. A new update points to that delay lasting longer than expected.

According to Deadline, Sony has no plans to release Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2025. The report mentions how the studio is "taking a lot of tender loving care" when it comes to concluding Miles Morales' story. So far, there have been few concrete signs related to Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse's release date. In September,...

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Gets a Frustrating Update
Image
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse remains one of Sony's most-anticipated Marvel movies. Unfortunately, the animated threequel has been repeatedly hit with delays, making it unclear when fans will see Miles Morales again on the big screen.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was originally set to hit theaters in March 2024 before being removed from Sony's release calendar in July 2023. While Sony has been light on official updates regarding the threequel since then, Jharrel Jerome — who voices the Miles Morales of Earth-42 — recently shared that he has not had any voice recording sessions yet for Beyond the Spider-Verse. "I haven't, but I also can't really say so much more because, you know, that's such a tight-knit ship," Jerome told Screen Rant. "I don't even know much. I'm as much in the dark as you, but I'm excited to get back into it and see what they're thinking, especially involving my character.

This latest bit of gossip comes from Brandon Davis, who relayed what he’s heard from the film’s production on his Phase Hero show on YouTube. You can find his comments on Beyond at around the 48 minute mark in the embed below. If you prefer reading things, here’s what...

Kevin Feige Shares Promising Update on Miles Morales' MCU Debut
Image
Marvel fans are excited for Peter Parker's return now that Spider-Man 4 is pushing through. The future also looks bright with a new Spider-Man variant teased to join the live-action MCU.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige revealed their plans for Miles Morales' live-action MCU debut. "Miles will appear in the third Spider-Verse movie, which is in production. I hope that, shortly after that, he can enter the MCU in live-action," he told Omelete. The update sets a timeline for the crossover, but that still depends on Beyond the Spider-Verse's troubled production. Initially slated for a March 2024 release, that film is now indefinitely delayed; Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider reported it's unlikely Beyond the Spider-Verse will come out before 2027. That seemingly rules out the rumored Miles Morales cameo in Spider-Man 4.

‘Twisters,’ ‘Inside Out 2’ Lead a Wide-Open Field for Grammy Visual Media Categories
Image
In the absence of a phenomenon like “Barbenheimer,” which dominated the Grammys’ visual-media categories last year, the outlook for 2025 is considerably more complicated and, some might say, more interesting.

Look for the summer’s biggest movie hits, “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” to land spots in the score and compilation soundtrack categories when the Grammy nominees are announced Nov. 8. But everything else is up in the air until then.

The compilation soundtrack category is the toughest to read, as there have been few films with breakout hits. “Twisters” is the summer’s biggest soundtrack, hitting No. 7 on the Billboard charts, so look for the tornado movie to score as an album and potentially in the song category for a pair of original country tunes: Luke Combs’ “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma” and Lainey Wilson’s “Out of Oklahoma.”

The eclectic “Deadpool & Wolverine” soundtrack — a wild collection...

One Of The Most Anticipated Horror Movies Of All Time Was Shot With An iPhone
Image
The future is now, old man. When director Danny Boyle's horror classic "28 Days Later" first released in the United States back in June of 2003, the now-ubiquitous piece of tech known as the iPhone still remained almost exactly four years away from debuting. In the decades since, artists have found some unique ways to put these phones through their paces -- everything from music videos to feature-length movies have now been touted as being shot entirely on iPhones. The appeal is rather self-explanatory, with the idea being that storytellers of this tech-savvy generation need little more than ambition, creativity, and an iPhone to become genuine filmmakers in their own right. Forget all those stuffy (and exclusive) film schools or nepo-baby connections, because now anyone can shoot a movie with the most common smartphone of all.

That's the feel-good story associated with the news that the long-awaited zombie sequel, "28 Years Later,...

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse's Latest Update Make Me More Confident My Release Hopes Will Come True
Image
We recently got an update on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verses production, and its keeping one of my release hopes alive. The highly anticipated follow-up to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was slated to release earlier this year, in March 2024, but has since had a tumultuous schedule. Sony delayed Beyond the Spider-Verse indefinitely over a year ago with no word on a new date. While Id much rather Sony took their time with the project to ensure the best quality, Im still secretly hoping that Beyond the Spider-Verse will pull off an earlier release.

Recently, 2027 was reported as the earliest possible release year for the film, but two members of Beyond the Spider-Verses production have since pushed back on the rumors. In response to reports that the film was getting a major creative overhaul that would delay it until 2027, composer Daniel Pemberton advised fans not to believe everything they read. Producer and...

Beyond the Spider-Verse Producer Addresses Rumors that Movie Has Been Scrapped - Main Image

Fans were hoping that Beyond the Spider-Verse was going to release this year, but it looks like the movie has a lot of catching up to do before it’s ready to officially release.

A rumor had been going around that the film has been mostly scrapped and the release date has been delayed indefinitely, but someone close to the production has come out to address the word going around online.

Chris Miller on the Status of Beyond the Spider-Verse

For context, the InSneider had reported that Sony had scrapped most of what’s already been done for Beyond the Spider-Verse, and the movie was likely going to release in 2027. Here’s the post from @DiscussingFilm:

Sony hadn’t addressed anything official, but producer Chris Miller had decided to post about the rumors, confirming that nothing...

Jack Huston joins Brendan Gleeson and Nicolas Cage in Spider-Noir
Jack Huston
Jack Huston is the latest addition to the cast of Amazon’s upcoming series, Spider-Noir. More on the casting below.

Amazon’s Spider-Noir series is coming together nicely as more casting news emerges. The latest to join the line-up is British actor Jack Huston, who Deadline believes is playing a bodyguard.

Huston (pictured above as the character Richard Harrow in Boardwalk Empire) will be joining Nicolas Cage, Brendan Gleeson and Lamorne Morris in the series, which is heading to Amazon’s MGM+ before debuting globally on Prime Video.

Cage will reprise his role as the titular Spider-Man variant from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse in which he voiced the character. Spider-Noir was immediately a fan favourite and Cage admitted earlier this year that he was having discussions about reprising the role in a live-action project. Spider-Noir came together quickly after that with an official announcement landing in May.

‘Spider-Verse’ Producer Chris Miller Denies Report That Sony ‘Scrapped Most’ of Third Film: ‘The Reels Are Coming Along Nicely’

Producer Chris Miller says all is well in the Spider-Verse.

Miller took to X on Tuesday to deny a claim from The InSneider about problems with the third film in the Oscar-winning franchise, “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” The newsletter reported on Monday evening that Sony had “scrapped most” of the movie for creative reasons, and that it “would be unlikely to debut before 2027.”

“Nothing has been scrapped,” Miller tweeted in response. “The reels are coming along nicely.” His comment came hours after “Spider-Verse” composer Daniel Pemberton similarly hit back at the report, writing on X, “Don’t really ever want to weigh in on this sort of stuff But would you ever believe there could sometimes be stuff on the internet that might not always be particularly accurate? Conflicting reports weave a web of confusion about the status of Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse
Image
The third and final chapter of Sony’s Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is weaving a complicated web as a report about the forthcoming film as the threequel’s composer, Daniel Pemberton, debunks a recent rumor. Yesterday, amid the news about James Earl Jones’ passing and Destin Daniel Cretton becoming the director of Spider-Man 4, industry insider Jeff Sneider said Beyond the Spider-Verse could get significantly delayed.

Last night, Sneider said Sony had scrapped much of the existing work on Beyond the Spider-Verse, citing “creative difference.” Sneider then said the film could get delayed to 2027 due to the setback because it was unlikely Sony would release Spider-Man 4 and Beyond the Spider-Verse in the same year (2026). Sneider’s report sparked confusion among Spider-Man fans, with many wondering how a complex project reset is possible.

Enter the threequel’s composer, Daniel Pemberton, who says Sneider’s report is false. Pemberton “entered the chat” at 2:17 am,...

Spider-man: Beyond The Spider-verse Could Face Major Delay Amid Rumors That Original Ideas Have Been Scrapped
Image
The final movie in Sony Pictures' animated Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, was originally set to swing into theaters on March 29, 2024 before being taken off the calendar last July, and the studio has yet to announce a new release date.

Last night, we learned that Marvel/Sony are moving full steam ahead on Spider-Man 4 with Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm, but this may have resulted in Beyond the Spider-Verse being pushed back yet again.

Jeff Sneider (via Toonado.com) believes there's a chance the threequel may not be with us until 2027 after being taken back to the drawing board.

According to the reliable insider, "creative differences" have led to "most of the movie being scrapped." We don't need to tell you how much work goes into an animated feature of this scale, so if this report is accurate, 2027 might even be an ambitious estimate!

Why 2027? I...

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027)
Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse reportedly hits more problems, composer hits back at delay claims
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027)
Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse is the planned third film in the animated trilogy – but it sounds like the problems are piling up.

Update: Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse composer Daniel Pemberton has addressed the reported delays to the film. Pemberton’s tweet, which you can see below, throws Jeff Sneider’s report of a new delay into question. According to Sneider’s newsletter The Insneider, Sony had scrapped large sections of the film, making it unlikely for Beyond The Spider-Verse to hit cinemas until 2027.

Pemberton doesn’t mention a solid release date, his post does imply that we’ll be seeing the film sooner than that, but Sony or the film’s directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson haven’t commented on the situation. We’ll keep you posted if they do.
