Netflix to Telecast the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor Under New Multi-Year Deal

A year after it moved from its longtime PBS home to CNN, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is switching telecast partners again. Netflix has struck a multi-year deal with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to move the Mark Twain Prize event to the streamer.

The deal begins this year, with Kevin Hart honored at the ceremony. This marks the 25th anniversary of the Mark Twain Prize, and Hart will be recognized “for his extraordinary contributions to the genre and his impressive achievements across comedy, film, and television.” This year’s event takes placeat the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on Sunday, March 24, and will be taped to premiere on Netflix on Saturday, May 11 — as the Netflix is a Joke Fest takes place in Los Angeles.

One of comedy’s highest honors is headed Adam Sandler’s way.

The superstar comedian has been selected to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The Hustle star will receive the honor during a gala ceremony at Washington, D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on March 19.

The Mark Twain Prize “recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain.” Previous recipients include Richard Pryor, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin, Neil Simon, Billy Crystal, George Carlin, Ellen DeGeneres, Carol Burnett, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart. And many of his fellow Saturday Night Live alums have also received the honor, like Lorne Michaels, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Washington, D.C. — Comedian Dave Chappelle was presented with the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for

American Humor Sunday night following a barrage of heartfelt tributes praising his courage, his spontaneity and his genius at drawing laughter from sobering racial commentary.

The Twain event, now in its 22nd year, was a non-stop love fest as a parade of admiring entertainers saluted Chappelle before a packed house at the center’s Concert Hall. It began with a tribute from Lorne Michaels about Chappelle’s hosting gig on “Saturday Night Live” immediately following the 2016 presidential election, and ended with comedian Jon Stewart’s reflections about his former Comedy Central colleague and recent traveling companion on the road.

Washington, D.C. — Actress and comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus accepted the Kennedy Center’s 21st annual Mark Twain Prize Sunday with heartfelt thanks to the cadre of colleagues gathered to pay tribute to the “Veep” star during in a warm and spontaneous evening that recounted her illustrious career. Not surprisingly, some of the event’s most pointed material was aimed at the Trump administration.

“I grew up in the D.C. area during the quaint, old-fashioned Rule of Law period,” Louis-Dreyfus said during comments upon accepting the honor from Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein – a small bust of author Samuel Clemens.

Little Kids Rock Announces More Stars For Annual Benefit
Little Kids Rock, the national nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives by restoring, expanding, and innovating music education in public schools, has announced more stars will be among the special guests who will take the stage at their annual benefit.

The organization has announced actor and comedian Mike Myers; award winner Darlene Love; Grammy nominated soul singer Bettye Lavette; Grammy winning blues musician Keb’ Mo’; Musical Director Will Lee; and past honorees Paul Shaffer, band leader and musical director for the Late Show with David Letterman; and famed Yankee and Latin Grammy nominee Bernie Williams will take part in the event.

This year’s event, which will honor Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt and Michael Dorf, will take place on Wednesday, October 18th at PlayStation Theater in New York.

Fey also gained critical acclaim for her work on TV comedy 30 Rock and wrote the screenplay for Lindsay Lohan's hit film Mean Girls.

She will be presented with the accolade on 9 November at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., when she will join the ranks of previous recipients Bill Cosby and Steve Martin.
