Boll shores up his reputation for terrible film-making as odd-couple rookie cops bond over a cute dog between gun rampages

The most interesting thing about this crushingly mediocre cop movie is that it’s directed by the notorious Uwe Boll, who is a character more bizarre than any drafted for the screen – at one point he invited his severest critics to fight him in the boxing ring. While the poor quality of his work, especially his computer game adaptations, is perhaps overhyped – are they that bad? – there’s less dispute that his films are largely not financially successful, and his output has slowed after a now-abandoned retirement. One of his weirder re-emergences recently was playing himself in Radu Jude’s acclaimed Romanian art film Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World from 2023 – after which he made this lukewarm mess.

African refugees struggling to reach Europe receive an unpleasant welcome in Uwe Boll’s Run. The action thriller from the renegade German director of First Shift and BloodRayne dropped its first official trailer today, shared exclusively with The Hollywood Reporter (see below).

Oscar-nominees Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction) and Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) star, alongside an impressive ensemble cast that includes James Russo, Ulrich Thomsen, Kristen Renton, Daniel Sauli, Marcus Henderson and newcomer Hannah Balogun.

The feature follows a group of migrants traveling by boat across the Mediterranean Sea toward Italy. When the vessel goes off course, tensions rise, leading to violence as the migrants turn on the smugglers. Upon reaching shore, some passengers evade capture, setting off a series of events throughout the day that escalate into further conflict, intertwining the lives of migrants, locals, and tourists.

Filmmaker Uwe Boll is back with a new action-packed vigilante thriller, ‘The Dark Knight,’ starring Armie Hammer as a man who takes justice into his own hands. The film, currently shooting in Zagreb, Croatia, has also added Costas Mandylor (‘Saw’ franchise) to the cast. Along with this announcement, the production team has released a first-look image from the film, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come.

In ‘The Dark Knight,’ Hammer plays Sanders, a man who goes rogue and begins hunting down criminals himself. Mandylor takes on the role of Interpol officer Henry, the man tasked with stopping him. This sets up an intense game of cat and mouse, with two strong-willed characters on opposite sides of the law.

Armie Hammer’s comeback is picking up steam after nabbing the starring role in Uwe Boll’s latest film, “The Dark Knight.”

Hammer is set to play the crime-fighting titular character in the vigilante thriller, which is scheduled to begin principal photography in Croatia on Jan. 27.

The embattled actor, who saw his career come to a halt in 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct, recently returned to work in Travis Mills’ forthcoming western “Frontier Crucible,” which also stars Thomas Jane and William H. Macy.

Following a lengthy probe, Los Angeles prosecutors in 2023 declined to charge the actor with any crime.

Prior to the allegations, Hammer starred in such high-profile pics as Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger” alongside Johnny Depp, Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” with Henry Cavill and Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me by Your Name” with Timothée Chalamet.

Uwe Boll is no stranger to controversy in the film world. The German director first made waves in the early 2000s with low-budget video game adaptations that were savaged by many critics as spectacularly terrible. Called everything from the worst filmmaker ever to cinema’s true “Ed Wood,” reaction to Boll’s earlier projects was certainly vicious at times.

So when Boll returned in 2022 with First Shift, his first feature since 2016, expectations were understandably mixed. Uwe Boll, it seems, is back.

The notorious German director of Rampage, Postal and Far Cry has wrapped production on his new film, First Shift, a New York cop drama set over an intense 12-hour shift of a veteran NYPD officer and his rookie partner. It is Boll’s first U.S. film in five years, since 2016’s Rampage: President Down.

Gino Anthony Pesi (Shades of Blue) plays the veteran cop, with Kristen Renton (Sons of Anarchy) as the rookie. First Shift shot on location in New York and is currently in postproduction at Tunnel Post in Los Angeles.

Unlike many of the films in his oeuvre, from Seed (2006) and Postal (2007) to the Rampage trilogy — movies that indulged in extreme, graphic onscreen bloodshed — First Shift, Boll says, will show his kinder, gentler side.

After a long break from feature films, director Uwe Boll is back and ready to roll with his latest project, a crime drama about two mismatched New York City cops on their first day as partners.

“First Shift” stars Kristen Renton (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Gino Anthony Pesi (“Shades of Blue”) as the badge-carrying duo, she a transplant from Atlanta new to the Big Apple, he a jaded Brooklyn cop who prefers to work alone but forced to take on the new partner.

Set to start shooting in New York City next month, “First Shift” has moved ahead of two other projects Boll has in the works, a South Africa-set thriller and a feature about Prohibition-era federal agent Eliot Ness — famously played by Kevin Costner and Robert Stack in the 1987 film and the 1959 series “The Untouchables” — during the latter part of his career.

The Fare has a simple yet intriguing premise. You probably get asked this a lot, but how did this idea come about?

Shades of Blue, NBC’s gritty drama starring Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta about corruption in the NYPD and the ramifications that ensue, has been renewed for a third season.

The announcement was made by Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment.

“We’re so hugely appreciative of everything Jennifer and Ray do, and know it is due to their dedication, as well as the hard work of our incredible cast and producers, that Shades of Blue has so clearly and compellingly earned a third-season renewal, Salke said.

“This show continues to mine powerful stories that always leave us hungry for more.”

Thus far in its second season, Shades of Blue is dominating the Sunday 10/9c hour among the ABC, CBS and NBC dramas, generating a +50% margin of victory in the of victory in the timeslot in adult 18-49 rating.

Det. Harlee Santos’ love life is about to get a lot busier: Shades of Blue has upped Gino Anthony Pesi to series regular ahead of Season 2, our sister site Deadline reports.

Pesi plays James Nava, the Ada who’s romantically involved with Jennifer Lopez’s character. He appeared in eight episodes of the NBC crime drama’s first season, which aired its season finale on March 31.

Why Watch? In order to help sell his novel, author Nick Santora became a director and created this short. Of course it helps that he’s a television and film writer with connections to a lot of talented people, but it’s a fascinating new method where the literary and cinematic worlds collide.
