Boll shores up his reputation for terrible film-making as odd-couple rookie cops bond over a cute dog between gun rampages
The most interesting thing about this crushingly mediocre cop movie is that it’s directed by the notorious Uwe Boll, who is a character more bizarre than any drafted for the screen – at one point he invited his severest critics to fight him in the boxing ring. While the poor quality of his work, especially his computer game adaptations, is perhaps overhyped – are they that bad? – there’s less dispute that his films are largely not financially successful, and his output has slowed after a now-abandoned retirement. One of his weirder re-emergences recently was playing himself in Radu Jude’s acclaimed Romanian art film Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World from 2023 – after which he made this lukewarm mess.

African refugees struggling to reach Europe receive an unpleasant welcome in Uwe Boll’s Run. The action thriller from the renegade German director of First Shift and BloodRayne dropped its first official trailer today, shared exclusively with The Hollywood Reporter (see below).
Oscar-nominees Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction) and Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) star, alongside an impressive ensemble cast that includes James Russo, Ulrich Thomsen, Kristen Renton, Daniel Sauli, Marcus Henderson and newcomer Hannah Balogun.
The feature follows a group of migrants traveling by boat across the Mediterranean Sea toward Italy. Filmmaker Uwe Boll is back with a new action-packed vigilante thriller, ‘The Dark Knight,’ starring Armie Hammer as a man who takes justice into his own hands. The film, currently shooting in Zagreb, Croatia, has also added Costas Mandylor (‘Saw’ franchise) to the cast. Along with this announcement, the production team has released a first-look image from the film, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come.
In ‘The Dark Knight,’ Hammer plays Sanders, a man who goes rogue and begins hunting down criminals himself. Mandylor takes on the role of Interpol officer Henry, the man tasked with stopping him. This sets up an intense game of cat and mouse, with two strong-willed characters on opposite sides of the law.
Boll is excited about the casting, saying

Armie Hammer’s comeback is picking up steam after nabbing the starring role in Uwe Boll’s latest film, “The Dark Knight.”
Hammer is set to play the crime-fighting titular character in the vigilante thriller, which is scheduled to begin principal photography in Croatia on Jan. 27.
The embattled actor, who saw his career come to a halt in 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct, recently returned to work in Travis Mills’ forthcoming western “Frontier Crucible,” which also stars Thomas Jane and William H. Macy.
Following a lengthy probe, Los Angeles prosecutors in 2023 declined to charge the actor with any crime.
Prior to the allegations, Hammer starred in such high-profile pics as Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger” alongside Johnny Depp, Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” with Henry Cavill and Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me by Your Name” with Timothée Chalamet.

Uwe Boll is no stranger to controversy in the film world. The German director first made waves in the early 2000s with low-budget video game adaptations that were savaged by many critics as spectacularly terrible. Called everything from the worst filmmaker ever to cinema’s true “Ed Wood,” reaction to Boll’s earlier projects was certainly vicious at times.
So when Boll returned in 2022 with First Shift, his first feature since 2016, expectations were understandably mixed. Set in New York City, First Shift pairs a hardened veteran detective with an eager rookie partner for their first shift together. On paper, it sounded like the makings of a gritty police drama in the vein of Training Day. In practice, would Boll’s filmmaking abilities have evolved at all?
My goal going in wasn’t to prejudge but to observe with an open perspective. As with any director, it’s fair to acknowledge...

Six years passed without a new film from director Uwe Boll, a filmmaker some would describe as infamous, while others would say he’s legendary. Then last year he made Hanau (Deutschland im Winter – Part 1), about a real-life mass murderer. Now he’s back with the police drama First Shift, and while the movie isn’t expected to be released until sometime in 2024, a trailer has already arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Boll wrote, directed, and produced First Shift, which is described as being a gripping police drama with the spirit of a classic road movie, taking us on a soul-stirring journey through the vibrant streets of New York City into the depths of our own reality and the innermost corners of our souls. It also comes with the announcement that he has signed up with new management called Bohemia Group. Boll's First Shift is an exhilarating crime drama that immerses viewers in a high-octane adventure in New York City delving into the lives of dedicated law enforcement officers. A soul-stirring journey through the vibrant streets, weaving together the spirit of a classic road movie with the raw intensity of a police drama. "My goal is to show the audience the harsh realities that come with forming strong relationships, especially in a world as stressful as law enforcement." Uwe Boll, it seems, is back.
The notorious German director of Rampage, Postal and Far Cry has wrapped production on his new film, First Shift, a New York cop drama set over an intense 12-hour shift of a veteran NYPD officer and his rookie partner. It is Boll’s first U.S. film in five years, since 2016’s Rampage: President Down.
Gino Anthony Pesi (Shades of Blue) plays the veteran cop, with Kristen Renton (Sons of Anarchy) as the rookie. First Shift shot on location in New York and is currently in postproduction at Tunnel Post in Los Angeles.
Unlike many of the films in his oeuvre, from Seed (2006) and Postal (2007) to the Rampage trilogy — movies that indulged in extreme, graphic onscreen bloodshed — First Shift, Boll says, will show his kinder, gentler side.
“It’s an action movie, and there’s a side plot involving the mob, but it’s...

After a long break from feature films, director Uwe Boll is back and ready to roll with his latest project, a crime drama about two mismatched New York City cops on their first day as partners.
“First Shift” stars Kristen Renton (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Gino Anthony Pesi (“Shades of Blue”) as the badge-carrying duo, she a transplant from Atlanta new to the Big Apple, he a jaded Brooklyn cop who prefers to work alone but forced to take on the new partner.
Set to start shooting in New York City next month, “First Shift” has moved ahead of two other projects Boll has in the works, a South Africa-set thriller and a feature about Prohibition-era federal agent Eliot Ness — famously played by Kevin Costner and Robert Stack in the 1987 film and the 1959 series “The Untouchables” — during the latter part of his career.

From Christopher Landon's Happy Death Day 2U and the Netflix series Russian Doll to Johannes Nyholm’s Koko-di Koko-da and Tom Paton’s Stairs, 2019 has been the year of time loop entertainment, and director D.C. Hamilton looks to add another compelling time-warping experience to the list with The Fare. Based on a screenplay by Brinna Kelly (who also co-stars in the movie), The Fare follows a taxi driver (Gino Anthony Pesi) who must figure out why his latest customer (Kelly) disappeared from the back of his cab... and why he keeps experiencing the eerie event over and over. With The Fare out now on Blu-ray and DVD from Dread, we caught up with Hamilton in our latest Q&a feature to discuss filming The Fare in six days, making the movie stay fresh while filming primarily in one location, and the upcoming projects he hopes to make with Brinna Kelly.

From director D. C. Hamilton and writer, producer, and star Brinna Kelly, the Hitchcockian romance The Fare stands out as one of the most memorable indie movies of the year. In the movie, Kelly stars as a charming young woman named Penny who steps into the cab of taxi driver Harris. Harris is entranced with Penny until she inexplicably disappears from the back of his cab without a trace. By resetting his meter, Harrison transports himself back to when Penny first climbs into the cab, trapping them both in a never-ending time loop which will change their lives forever.
With its simple yet intriguing premise, The Fare is fairly reminiscent of classic science-fiction shows like The Twilight Zone. This is by design, as Brinna Kelly was inspired by how those older shows were able to tell such amazing stories despite their limitations. "As a child the stories that fascinated me...

Why Watch? In order to help sell his novel, author Nick Santora became a director and created this short. Of course it helps that he’s a television and film writer with connections to a lot of talented people, but it’s a fascinating new method where the literary and cinematic worlds collide. Beyond being a curiosity, the film itself (an excerpt of his book brought to life) is damned good. Jimmi Simpson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) is excellent with his droopy-eyed drama – offering the heist of a lifetime to a guy that works in the bowels of a law firm (Gino Anthony Pesi). He may be low on the totem pole, but he’s got access to a lot of potentially pricey information. I spoke with Santora about the short and his writing career – a conversation you can listen in on here. What will it cost? Only 7 minutes. Skip...

When best-selling author Nick Santora wanted a way to get fans and entertainment industry officials excited about “Fifteen Digits,” he became a director. The result is a short film pulled from the book featuring Jimmi Simpson and Gino Anthony Pesi. Of course, Santora has a background – writing for shows like The Sopranos, Prison Break and Law and Order. He also wrote Punisher: War Zone and created the show Breakout Kings. He’s firmly entrenched in a world where everything is caught on camera, but he’s using that experience in a unique way when it comes to wearing his literary hat. We talk with the newly minted director about how turning to filmmaking to sell a book (and himself) has worked out. Plus, Jack Giroux and Rob Hunter face off in the Movie News Pop Quiz and then debate the merits of Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus. Download Episode #137 On This Week’s Show: Movie News Pop Quiz...
