Subhash K Jha Celebrates Priyanka Chopra-John Abraham’s Karam As It turns 20
Image
Subhash K Jha celebrates Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham’s thriller/drama with a bit of rom, Karam, in this special extra edition of This Day That Year. We also hear from the actress about the making of the film and working with John.

While some films have their finger on the pulse, in Karam, Sanjay F Gupta (not to be confused with Sanjay Gupta) had his pulse on the finger.

Let me explain. In one heart-stopping sequence, the ruthless mobster, mysteriously named Captain, chops off the ethereal Shalini’s finger and sends it in a gift box to her tormented husband, John.

Remember Brad Pitt being similarly ‘gifted’ in Seven? Don’t expect the immense intensity of Seven to hit you in Karam. But music-video maverick /cinematographer Sanjay F Gupta does wallop a punch or two in the solar plexus with his unusually violent, skilfully narrated story of an...

Woh Bhi Din The Movie Review: Interesting Theme Ruffled By Languid Narration

Woh Bhi Din The Movie Review Rating:

Star Cast: John Abraham, Rohit Saraf, Sanjana Sanghi, Charu Bedi, Adarsh Gourav, Gaurav Parajuli, Zeishan Quadri

Director: Sajid Ali

Woh Bhi Din The Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

What’s Good: The underlying message is that even naughty or flawed children can attain distinction in adult life and that childhood should be guilt-free, while school also prepares you for the outside world and is not just about books and examinations. A subtle message thus goes out to strict parents.

What’s Bad: A film that craved for skilled editing and horrendous (can’t think of any other word) music!

Loo Break: Therefore, quite frequently in many stretched sequences. At 2-hour plus, this one could have been crisply told in about 90 minutes.

Watch or Not?: Do you have to write about it? Then yes. Otherwise, we learn its messages in school, called...

Randeep Hooda Calls Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer A Propaganda Film, “Their Movies Tell The Entire World…”
Image
Randeep Hooda Talks About Oppenheimer(Photo Credit –Instagram/IMDb)

Oppenheimer is one of the biggest hits of 2023. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the biographical war drama stars Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Garu Oldman, Rami Malek, Josh Peck and several others. The movie won several Oscar awards recently, along with the Best Picture Award. Along with critics and audiences, many celebrities worldwide have also praised the movie. However, actor Randeep Hooda has a different view towards the Nolan directorial.

Randeep Hooda called Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer a “propaganda” movie. The actor, who recently received praise for his performance in Swatantrya Veer Savarkar movie, said that Robert J Oppenheimer built the atomic bomb, and it was a painful incident.

On the Beerbiceps podcast, Randeep Hooda said, “America made Oppenheimer. That man built the atomic bomb. It was such a painful incident… in Japan, on civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki,...

“Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, A Near Masterpiece That Goes Beyond The Gandhi-Nehru Rhetoric” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Is there a more underrated actor in Indian cinema than Randeep Hooda? Opportunities to prove his heavy mettle seldom come his way. But when given a meaty role, Hooda lets us know what divides the men from the boys.

In Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Hooda not only proves himself an able if somewhat self-indulgent director, but he also portrays one of the unsung founding fathers of Azad Bharat, the man and leader who dared to call out Mahatma Gandhi for his sometimes-myopic view of secularism.

Indeed, one of the highlights of this remarkable bio-pic are the dialogues between a benign Gandhi (played with a slightly smug self-love by Rajesh Khera) and an aggressive Savarkar. Gandhians may not agree with the portrayal of Gandhi as an incorrigible peacenik. Good films do that: they force open uncomfortable debates.

As an actor, Hooda is fully prepared for any combat that Savarkar must face. His...

“Nawazuddin’s Arrogant Performance Cannot Hide Thackeray’s Blatant Chauvinism” A Subhash K Jha Review
Thackeray

Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Amrita Rao

Directed by Abhijeet Panse

Bal Thackeray… sorry Balasaheb Thackeray(in the film an unsuspecting character gets slapped by a Shiv Sena soldier for saying the Demi God’s name without the reverential suffix) played the chauvinistic card with a masterminded focus. He knew how to tap the Marathi Manoos’ latent pride and also how to harness it into a violent outpouring.

Many of his opponents, including the unfortunate Morarjee Desai(unfortunate, as he is played by Rajesh Khera) thought of his campaign to cleanse Maharashtra to be almost a ratification of Hitler’s Nazism.

Think Jews. Think Bihar and Up’s Bhaiyyas and the South Indian Udipi restaurateurs being chased out of Mumbai by violent Sainiks. Think Hitler. Think Trump. If you spot the difference, let me know.

The film on Balasaheb certainly doesn’t squander the opportunity to portray the man as infinitely intolerant of migrants.

Rajesh Khera, popular for his role as gay designer Maddy in TV show .Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi., says actors live on the edge because of uncertainties in their career and the feeling is scary..As an actor we live on the edge. We are not sure of our next move. If one serial gets over, we don.t know when we will get our next project. So you are only earning for that period of time,. Rajesh told Ians..All I can say is I have survived somehow. A lot of people have not survived. The industry is all about new concepts and new faces especially in the television sector. All new television soaps have new faces. Where do people like us go? This means life for an actor is limited, for four or five years only, unless you are Ram Kapoor or Ronit Roy, who for some reason have had an extension.

Lamhaa Movie Review
Sanjay Dutt
Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu, Kunal Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Mahesh Manjrekar, Shernaz Patel, Yashpal Sharma, Vipin Sharma, Aman Verma , Vishwajeet Pradhan, Rajesh Khera, Murli Sharma, Jyoti Dogra, Denzil Smith, Yuri Suri, Ehsaan Khan and others; Director: Rahul Dholakia; Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Warning. This is not a completely unbiased review. Being a Kashmiri, even one who hasn’t been back since 1989, there is no way I could remain unmoved at the sight of either the forlorn Dal Lake, or the pretty boys talking Lashkar language or the beautiful city of Srinagar reduced to ruins, with barbed wire, sandbags.
