Updated: The dispute over Eros International’s AI-altered rerelease of “Raanjhanaa” expanded beyond the director-studio conflict when the film’s lead actor Dhanush issued a public statement Sunday expressing his opposition to the modified ending.

“The re-release of ‘Raanjhanaa’ with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection,” Dhanush posted on X along with the comment “For the love of cinema.” “This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future.”

Eros Media World plans to return the 2013 romance Raanjhaana to Tamil Nadu screens on 1 August, marketing the rerelease—retitled Ambikapathy—as “AI‑powered” and swapping the original death scene for a happy epilogue in which Dhanush’s Kundan survives.

The initial cut, directed by Aanand L Rai and starring Sonam Kapoor opposite Dhanush, concluded with Kundan’s fatal shooting after a political rally, a finale many viewers considered central to the film’s emotional punch and box‑office success.

Lalit, how do you look back on the experience?

Khkn(Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na), considered a small film at the time of release with Shah Rukh Khan; this was one of his earlier starting point film. And a South Indian girl, Suchitra. It had newer composers, Jatin-Lalit helming the music department with the veteran Majrooh Sultanpuri and a new producer named Vikram Mehrotra. This was a film being directed by Kundan Shah an actual genius who was embarking on making a mark with a commercially successful film! This was actually a new team working together.

Veteran Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah has reminisced about his cult-classic film ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ in which he starred as a photographer. The actor said that director Kundan Shah had a lot of footage before editing the film but he went on to ruthlessly chop the film at the edit table as he was very clear about the story.

Naseeruddin said: “I did the film because I found this script very funny and Kundan Shah, the director, was a very good friend. But, when I started working on it, I thought, ‘This is the stupidest film ever being made, if it is ever made’.”

The actor also shared that working on the film was a tough process as he had a different perspective of the character which wasn’t aligned with that of Kundan .
