The music industry woke up with a piece of devastating news when, on May 22, a tragic private plane crash in San Diego’s Murphy Canyon neighborhood claimed the lives of several people, including Dave Shapiro, a prominent music agent and co-founder of Sound Talent Group.

Netflix's Time Cut not only walks viewers through a compelling sci-fi drama but also drops fascinating pop-culture references from the early 2000s. Directed by Hannah MacPherson, Time Cut tries to create a mishmash of several different genres by using time travel as its primary narrative device. It presents the familiar tale of a teenage girl who accidentally ends up in the past, giving her the opportunity to change the future for good.

Unfortunately, despite having an intriguing premise, the Netflix time travel movie has failed to leave its mark among critics. It holds an underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes score of 17%, with many criticizing the movie for its inability to bring something new to the table. However, with all the criticism, Time Cut is also earning some appreciation for its accurate depiction of the mid-aughts and notalgic references and nods to the period's pop culture.

For Millennials, Time Cut opens with perhaps the scariest cinematic moment of the year. For here is a slasher dealing in nostalgia for a bygone era, a time so long ago that you can now pointedly revive its fashion and music and cultural references as a wink-nudge counterpoint to the present day. That particular era? 2003. Time really does come for us all.

While the text card “April 13 2003” is likely to invoke more terror than anything else in the film, Time Cut remains a cheap and just-about-cheerful-enough 91-minute romp, with one or two interesting ideas among all the throwback references. Netflix's Time Cut not only presents a thrilling time travel story that switches between two timelines but also makes good use of its background score to reflect the time period it is set in. In its opening moments, Time Cut briefly features a segment from 2003 before jumping ahead to the present day and introducing its main character, Lucy. However, after setting the foundation for its main character beats, the movie unfolds its time travel narrative and falls back into its 2003 timeline.

Directed by Hannah Macpherson, Time Cut cleverly reflects these timeline shifts in its narrative through several subtle narrative devices. For instance, when Lucy finds herself in 2003, the first thing she notices is the mid-aughts fashion. The more her story progresses in the 2003 timeline, the more the movie features original songs from the time to effectively instill nostalgia in viewers who grew up during that period.

As Hilary Duff once said, let's go back, back to the beginning. And in Netflix's new horror movie Time Cut, that's exactly what Lucy does. Outer Banks star Madison Bailey leads the movie as Lucy, a teenager who travels back in time from 2024 to 2003 and must save her sister from being the next victim of the Sweetly Slasher serial killer.

Deer Tick have announced their new album, Emotional Contracts, out June 16th as their debut on Ato Records. They’ve also expanded their 2023 tour (grab tickets here) and shared the lead single, “Forgiving Ties,” alongside album track “The Real Thing.”

Emotional Contracts was produced by Dave Fridmann, who is best known for his work with The Flaming Lips, Spoon, and Sleater-Kinney. The 10-track LP includes a feature from Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and background vocals from Courtney Marie Andrews, Vanessa Carlton, Kam Franklin, Angela Miller, and Sheree Smith.

In a statement, vocalist/guitarist John McCauley described letting loose during the recording process. “This time we wanted to see what it would feel like to let go a bit,” he said. “We figured that the songs were strong enough to stand on their own two feet, so whatever we put them through would just make them stronger and take us in some new direction.

Brett Radin, a talent manager with Knitting Factory Management, died Friday at his home in Los Angeles at 53. No cause of death was given by his family.

Brian Long, President of Knitting Factory Management, said, “We are extremely saddened to learn the news of Brett’s passing. He brought a lightning bolt of positive energy. He was passionate for his artists, deeply knowledgable about the workings of the music industry, and intuitive. He will be missed.”

Most people were winding things down on Monday night in Los Angeles yesterday, but the streets near the Hollywood Bowl were buzzing with thousands of fans doing their best Stevie Nicks impressions. Stage actor and writer Sidney DuPont has gathered a group of Broadway and Off Broadway performers to launch “The Walkout Project,” a movement to urge the exclusive patronage of Black-owned businesses on July 4.

Music icon Carole King wants everyone to know that she’s performing – along with Broadway’s Beautiful cast – as part of PBS’ traditional A Capitol Fourth event, and most definitely not as part of President Donald Trump’s “political rally.”

In a message pinned to the top of her Twitter page – with a little line drawing by New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly – King writes, “Just to be clear – I am appearing in ‘A Capitol Fourth,’ the traditional event held annually on the lawn at the Capitol. I am Not participating in t’s political rally.”

Earlier this year, Marlon Wayans said that there were "rumblings" about a possible sequel to the 2004 Wayans brothers comedy. Now, cast member Terry Crews has added some fuel to the fire, saying that the movie is going to happen. Joining the all-star line-up for the 39th annual edition of PBS’ A Capitol Fourth, the country’s longest-running live national July 4 TV tradition, are Broadway star and two-time Tony Award nominee Laura Osnes (Bandstand) plus Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and R&b legends The O’Jays.
