My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren't Wicked Anime Adaptation Announced for 2026
Image
It's a tale as old as time: an innocent girl is bullied by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters. Not this time, though! The comedy manga My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren't Wicked will become an anime, bringing to life a wholesome twist on the fairy tale trope. ‘Mob Psycho 100’ Creator Only Had One Request for the Anime Adaptation
Image
Good-looking characters are interesting, becoming the norm in anime. When you see the appearance of a character, you can tell how important they are. If they are good-looking and have unique features, they are more likely to be a major character, rather than if they look plain.

This is a rule of storytelling: you make the key characters stand out so they feel more impactful. But One is an exception to that rule. His works, Mob Psycho 100 and One Punch Man, introduce seemingly regular dudes and have them evolve into standout characters through the narrative alone.

One Wanted Mob’s Design to Stay Unimpressive

It is always a mystery box when an anime adapts a popular manga. What comes out could be a masterpiece, or a season-long tragedy (cue The Beginning After The End). This is why One wanted to make sure the anime doesn’t change Mob’s design.

Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Joe Pantoliano, and Carrie-Anne Moss in The Matrix (1999)
4 anime shows perfect for Marvel and DC fans
Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Joe Pantoliano, and Carrie-Anne Moss in The Matrix (1999)
We're at a point where US and Japanese pop culture are reciprocating a level of influence on each other. The history and development of anime were influenced by classic American cartoons from the Golden Age of Animation. In the years that anime has exploded in popularity in North America, major US productions have been notably influenced by anime — The Matrix was publicly stated to be influenced by '90s anime movie Ninja Scroll and the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender owes an obvious stylistic debt to anime techniques and storytelling conventions.

With that in mind, it's hardly surprising that there are several anime and manga series that have clearly been influenced by the US superheroes coming from Marvel and DC Comics — and other smaller publishers, too. There are several stand-out superhero anime and manga series. For fans of the comic book heroes from Marvel and DC, these anime shows are sure to be particularly enjoyable.

The Higashikata Family Tree from Jojolion, Explained
Image
This article contains spoilers for Jojo's Bizzare Adventure Part 8.

Jojo's Bizzare Adventure tells a generation-spanning tale of good versus evil. But, at the end of Part 6: Stone Ocean, the universe underwent a whole reboot. The entire cast was changed, and so too was the setting, timeline, and narrative philosophy of author Hirohiko Araki, who was now more interested in even more experimental storytelling. This new Jojo's Bizarre Adventure universe featured a story titled Jojolion.

This new continuity would receive its own Josuke Higashikata and introduce a new variation of the Higashikata family and their strangeness. Unlike the previous Higashikata family from part 4, Diamond is Unbreakable, this one is far more expanded with multiple generations coming into play.

Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah, John Abraham, and Shruti Haasan in Welcome Back (2015)
Naoto Kawashima is a film director, writer, and actor from Japan, born in 1990. He graduated from Nihon University College of Art, and is affiliated with the production company GunsRock. His debut, “Takasaki Graffiti”, premiered in Japan in 2018, and “Welcome Back” was nominated for the Competition 1-2 Award at the 40th Warsaw International Film Festival.

On the occasion of the world premiere of his second full-length film, “Welcome Back”, at the Warsaw International Film Festival, he talks about his career, the film industry in Japan and other topics.

Can you tell me why and how you became a filmmaker?

Everything began thanks to my mother. She loves movies, and we used to go together to a video rental shop. That’s how I started watching various films, and from that time it was kind of obvious to me to choose this career. Although at the start I was thinking of becoming a producer,...

Takashi Miike in 13 Assassins (2010)
Film Review: Welcome Back (2024) by Naoto Kawashima
Takashi Miike in 13 Assassins (2010)
Boxing seems to be a compelling topic in Japan lately, as another filmmaker, after Takashi Miike with “First Love” (2019) or Sho Miyake with “Small, Slow But Steady” (2022), decided to use it as a background to tell a story. Naoto Kawashima is a film director, writer, and actor, whose feature debut, “Takasaki Graffiti”, premiered in Japan in 2018. However, his second film, “Welcome Back”, was presented to a broader audience, as it was nominated for the Competition 1-2 Award at the 40th Warsaw International Film Festival.

Teru (Kaito Yoshimura) and Ben (Yugo Mikawa) grew up together and consider themselves brothers. Teru is a boxer with the chance to win the rookie of the year title, while Ben is his biggest fan. In the decisive match, Teru loses to Kitazawa (Yoshinori Miyata), which results in his retirement from boxing. Ben, unable to accept it, picks up Teru’s gloves and heads to Osaka to fight Kitazawa.

Shy Episode 6 Release Date & Time
Image
After a slower episode #5, Shy episode #6 is expected to pick up the pace and continue the series' exciting action. Episode #5 of Shy served as a training arc for Teru, focusing on her character development and emotional growth. It beautifully showcases the series' emphasis on emotions and will likely continue in episode #6.

Shy episode #6 will probably pick up the pace after episode #5 gave the series a deserved breather. Episode #5 kept things pretty slow, but it was a welcome change of pace after weeks of nonstop action and had a lot of great character moments for its lead and other members of the cast. All in all, there was a lot that episode #5 did right, and it leaves a lot to be excited about for episode #6.

What Time Shy Episode #6 Releases

As with previous episodes, Shy streams exclusively on Crunchyroll, which can be accessed either through their website, their app, or Amazon Prime.

New Anime is the Superhero & Magical Girl Fusion Fans Didn't Know They Needed
Image
While appearing to be part of the superhero genre, the latest conflict in Shy – currently streaming on Crunchyroll – is patterned after traditional Magical Girl anime. It's both an interesting move and an excellent way of standing out among its peers.

Teru Momijiyama anxious nature might not make her typical superhero material, but it's also perfectly in line with what makes a good Magical Girl. By presenting one story as another – and vice versa – Shy taps into two very different audiences without scaring either off. With superhero stories growing in popularity, it's a welcome breath of fresh air that keeps it from feeling mandated to follow formula.

Shy Episode 4 Release Date & Time

Episode #4 of Shy is almost here, and it will see the titular protagonist put to the test against fellow hero Stardust. Compared to the first two episodes, Shy episode #3 was a lot slower with its story, but that served as a nice cooldown from how intense the previous episodes were. Even with that, however, there was plenty of great development to be found in episode #3, and a lot of great content has been set up for its immediate follow-up in episode #4.

Mob Psycho 100 Proves Shigeo is Unstoppable in the Most Devastating Way
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Mob Psycho 100, Season 3, Episode 11The final episodes of Mob Psycho 100 have seen Mob's power growing out of control, leading to destruction on a massive scale like the series has never before seen. Things have taken a turn for the worse, however, as even the one person most likely to get through to Mob--his brother--has failed.

While Mob (whose real name is Shigeo Kageyama) was busy contemplating the fact that his crush was planning to move away, he noticed a child about to be hit by a car. Leaping into action, Mob pushed the boy away in time, but was hit by the car himself instead; lying unconscious on the pavement, the manifestation of Mob's psychic abilities took control of his body to see to it that he made it to the meeting spot on time--regardless of whatever destruction he might be leaving in his wake.
