Back in 2021, filmmaker Mike Flanagan let it be known on social media that he was interested in making a “standalone horror/thriller/tragedy” movie that would center on the Clayface character. A while after that, he confirmed that he had met with veteran DC movie producer Jon Berg to pitch a “horror-leaning” take on Clayface, as well as ideas for the DC properties Scarecrow, Justice League Dark, and Constantine. The meeting “kind of went nowhere.” But then, in March of 2023, Deadline broke the news that Flanagan had scheduled another Clayface pitch meeting, this time with DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. And at the end of last year, it was announced that Flanagan is officially writing a Clayface movie that will be part of the DC Universe film franchise that’s being overseen by Gunn and Safran. A few months ago, Speak No Evil director James Watkins was hired to take the helm,...

Clayfacehas continued to round out its cast with one of the stars of The Social Network. Less than a year ago, it was announced that Mike Flanagan's Clayface script would be getting a Dcu movie, with a release date set for September 2026. Nexus Point News is reporting that Max Minghella has been cast in Clayface. Minghella is best known for his work in films like The Social Network, The Ides of March, Babylon, and the hit television series The Handmaid's Tale. He will play an original character, a detective named John, who is the fiancé of Caitlin Bates (Naomi Ackie), the doctor who gives Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) the serum that turns him into Clayface.

Following the recent news that Naomi Ackie is in talks to join the cast of DC Studios' Clayface movie, we're hearing that Max Minghella is also being eyed for a key role.
According to Nexus Point News, Minghella would play a character named John, "a detective and fiancé to Caitlin Bates, who’s suspicious of his fiancée’s relationship with Matt Hagen/Clayface."
We're not sure if Minghella is actually in negotiations as of yet, but Ackie is now believed to have been officially offered the role of Bates, while Tom Rhys Harries will play Hagen.
Though this is just a rumor for now, the source has been scooping the trades with major casting news for months at this stage, so we're inclined to believe this is on the level.
Clayface's story will reportedly "center on an ascending actor whose face is disfigured by a gangster. As a last resort,...

As we draw closer to the Earth completing another orbit of the sun in the year known as 2025, movie fans can start looking forward to another upcoming slate of big-budget superhero blockbusters. Marvel and DC Studios will be out to score big at the box office with their respective releases in 2026, but the new approach is to focus on quality over quantity, all while treating fans to an eclectic mix of flicks.
It's no secret that Marvel and DC releases have struggled at the box office in recent years, suggesting that audiences are growing tired of comic book movies. Despite receiving positive reviews, 2025's "Thunderbolts*" lost millions for Marvel Studios and Disney, becoming one of the lowest-grossing films in the history of the MCU. DC, meanwhile, released a slew of flops (including "Black Adam" and "Shazam! Fury of the Gods") in the lead-up to this year, forcing the studio to...

I had a cousin with whom I shared an especially strong bond in 2022, when we were both looking forward to the lives that awaited us at graduation. But soon, it all spiraled into a cesspool of verbal clashes, emotional distance, and cold shoulders. What pushed me into months—and eventually years—of mental anxiety was the way he concealed it all behind a self-image of being the responsible, mature one: the person who listened to elders and blended in so nicely and amicably. It’s the kind of wound you don’t recover from easily.
Now, this dip into personal sappiness may seem unrelated, yet it mirrors the dark cesspool beneath James Watkins’s bleak and unsettling survival horror “Eden Lake.” An unnerving, all-out exploitative drama in the vein of genre films critiquing the hoodie culture of “Broken Britain,” it unleashes a graphic hunting spree without ever pausing to grant its audience easy gratification.

Among the various Stephen King adaptations released this year, none of them reach the deeply melancholic and emotional level that The Life of Chuck does. Originally released at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, The Life of Chuck is now set for a digital release, a couple of months after the film premiered in theaters. Mike Flanagan's most personal and intimate project yet, the movie should not be missed. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Tom HIddelston, Jacob Tremblay, Karen Gillian, Mark Hamill, Mia Sara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and many more, The Life of Chuck will now be available to watch at home.
Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck will be heading to digital platforms starting Tuesday, July 29. Purchase and rent options will be available on services like Fandango at Home, Apple TV, and Prime Video, among others. The film tells the story of Charles "Chuck" Krantz and the significant moments...

For a movie that was so well-received by critics and crowds, and relatively successful at the box office, Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has certainly not had the cultural impact that folks involved would've liked. The movie was released at the peak of the pandemic in 2021, marking Marvel's first theatrical exclusive debut since Black Widow. It outperformed that film, whose box office potential was kneecapped thanks to a controversial day-and-date debut on the Disney+ streaming service. Shang-Chi, however, seemed to suggest audiences still had an appetite for big-screen Marvel movies. However, there has been no movement on a sequel since then, and the film has now been overtaken at the global box office by the recently released Superman.
Directed by James Gunn, the DC superhero movie has grossed around $445 million at the global box office in less than three weeks of release. Shang-Chi concluded its run with a little over $430 million.

Before introducing Batman in Brave and the Bold, the Dcu will dive into the Dark Knight's rogues' gallery with the R-rated body horror Clayface. Speak No Evil director James Watkins will deliver Clayface on a low $40 million budget based on a reportedly strong script from Doctor Sleep writer Mike Flanagan.

Naomi Ackie is in talks to join the cast, but no details on her role have been disclosed. There's a chance she will play Matt Hagen's love-interest, Dr. Caitlin Bates, who did not originate in the comics.

The upcoming Dcu movie about Clayface, starring Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries, is shaping up to be a fresh take on the character. Unlike the usual portrayal of Clayface as a villain, this film will explore a different side of him.
This info comes from talks back in March 2023, when filmmaker Mike Flanagan and his partner Trevor Macy met with James Gunn and Peter Safran to discuss the project.
At that point, it wasn’t clear if the movie would be part of the main DC Universe or an Elseworlds story. The character is also expected to appear in Matt Reeves’s The Batman: Part II set for 2027.
By December 2024, DC Studios officially gave the green light to the Clayface film, with Mike Flanagan writing the script. Peter Safran compared the tone of the movie to the 1986 body horror film The Fly, which is about a scientist’s tragic transformation.

DC Studios is in early talks with actor Naomi Ackie for the female lead role in “Clayface,” its 2026 horror film starring Tom Rhys Harries, Variety has confirmed.
The horror film — written by Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins — focuses on the titular Batman villain, who starts out as an actor who, after his face is disfigured, turns in desperation to a highly experimental medical procedure. As so often happens with highly experimental medical procedures in comic book movies, things don’t go quite as planned, and the actor’s body transforms into a clay-like material that can reshape itself into anyone’s appearance.
Ackie’s star has been steadily rising over the last few years, with supporting roles in 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and 2025’s “Mickey 17” and “Sorry, Baby”; she also played Whitney Houston in the 2022 biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and headlined Zoë Kravitz...

Also known for his role as Hughie in The Boys, Quaid voices the character in the Max animated series, My Adventures with Superman, which has aired two full seasons. Quaid recently took to his personal Threads account to share his first reaction after watching Superman, and not only did he praise the film, but he also lauded Corenswet’s performance as the titular character, saying that “humanity shines through” him in every frame. You can read his full comment below.

Following a blockbuster debut last week, director James Gunn’s Superman continued to dominate the box office as it prepares to face direct competition in the form of fellow superhero film The Fantastic Four: First Steps in a few days. This weekend, Supermansoared past the $200 million mark domestically and the $400 million mark worldwide, further establishing itself as a solid win for Warner Bros. Superman is the studio’s second-biggest hit of 2025, behind onlyA Minecraft Movie.
With around $235 million domestically and another $172 million from overseas markets, Superman’s cumulative global box office haul stands at $406 million. In an interview with CBS Mornings, “Superman” director James Gunn discussed his vision for the DC Comics Universe… which is truly less a singular vision and more an overarching investment in creativity. With a diverse slate of characters — that beyond Clark Kent’s alter ego also of course includes Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern — Gunn explained that a uniform style cannot be dictated from movie to movie. He used as an example Clayface, a Batman villain that is set for his own feature with a Mike Flanagan-penned script and directed by “Speak No Evil” filmmaker James Watkins.
“We’ve got Clayface, which is a totally different thing,” Gunn said (via ScreenRant). “Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film. That’s one of the things we want to do. There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is going to be like ‘Superman.

In case there’s any doubt in the wake of Superman, James Gunn confirms that the DC Universe’s take on Clayface is a horror film.
“Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film,” Gunn told CBS Mornings.
“There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like Superman,” he continues. “The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it.”
Currently in pre-production, Clayface is expected to shoot later this summer for a September 11, 2026 theatrical release via Warner Bros.
James Watkins will direct from a script by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini.
It’s described as a Hollywood horror tale centering on a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to remain relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay.

As the upcoming R-rated Batman horror movie gets ready for production, James Gunn explains why the DC Universe needs the film. One of the surprise additions to the Dcu slate is Clayface, which was initially not part of Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters" until DC Studios got the pitch from Mike Flanagan.
While the Dcu's Batman reboot is still in the works, fans will be getting to meet one of the Dark Knight's most famous villains before Bruce Wayne shows up in the franchise. Set to be an R-rated horror film, Clayface will star Tom Rhys Harries as the titular DC foe.

We have more coverage from James Gunn's chat with CBS Mornings, and this time, the DC studio chief is discussing Clayface, the upcoming Dcu feature film from director James Watkins (See No Evil).
James Gunn has emphasized that the DC Universe will aim to offer a wide variety of storytelling styles, ensuring each film feels unique.
He clarified that while the newly released Superman sets the tone for that character’s world, it shouldn’t be seen as a template for every DC Studios project. Each entry in the Dcu is expected to stand on its own, bringing something fresh and distinct.

A new Clayface movie is officially on the way, and fresh reports are giving fans a clearer picture of what to expect. According to Nexus Point News, the film will tell a dark and disturbing story about a struggling Hollywood actor who ends up turning into a monster made of clay.
DC Studios has described the film as an R-rated body horror that will show the tragic origins of one of Batman’s classic villains.
The movie was originally thought up by horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan, known for Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House. Flanagan first became interested in Clayface back in 2021 and kept pitching his idea to DC. In March 2023, Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy met with DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran to talk about the project.
Reports say that from the start, the idea was for Clayface to be more than just a typical villain.

Robert Pattinson’s The Batman was a sobering experience for everyone involved in how effortlessly beautiful his Dark Knight would look when placed within James Gunn‘s Dcu. As a young, amateur, and budding superhero with his whole arc left untouched, Battinson would be the perfect counter to David Corenswet‘s bright-eyed and optimistic Superman.
But it was not meant to be. One of the first acts from the executive desk of James Gunn after his appointment as the head of DC Studios was to relegate Pattinson’s Batman to an Elseworlds universe. Now, a new Clayface update makes things even more bizarre for DC as the villain effortlessly migrates from The Batman‘s universe to the Dcu with no strings attached whatsoever.

Clayface is set to be the third feature film set in the DC Universe. With production set to kick off this September, the first plot and character details for the R-rated body horror movie have reportedly been shared.
According to Nexus Point News' sources, Clayface will center around an amalgamation of the Matt Hagen and Basil Karlo versions of the character, being named after the former but with elements of the latter's backstory. This is similar to how Clayface was used in Batman: The Animated Series, which Mike Flanagan has already revealed was a huge influence on his script. The movie reportedly sees Hagen — a handsome, up-and-coming actor from Gotham who moved to Hollywood to escape his troubled past and begin a career — get attacked and disfigured, leading not only to his career and outlet as an actor being ruined but to his eventual transformation into Clayface.

After the box-office opening weekend success of Superman, it's clear that DC Studios and the new DC Universe continuity are off to a strong start. Fans won't have to wait long for more Dcu content, as there are also two more feature films due in 2026. The first is Supergirl, and the second is a slightly unexpected film that was not part of the original Gods and Monsters slate when James Gunn and Peter Safran first took over DC Studios: Clayface.
Clayface was born out of a script written by Mike Flanagan, whose horror work, like the series Midnight Mass and the film Doctor Sleep, has earned him critical acclaim in the genre. Gunn and Safran's excitement over the script would lead to the project being fast-tracked, with James Watkins (Speak No Evil remake) set to direct with Tom Rhys Harries as the lead. Last month, we learned that Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries will play the lead character in DC Studios' Clayface. The movie is based on a story by The Fall of the House of Usher's Mike Flanagan (Drive writer Hossein Amini penned the latest draft), with Speak No Evil director James Watkins at the helm.
Clayface was not among the projects announced by DC Studios at the start of 2023, making it a surprise addition to the "Chapter 1 - Gods and Monsters" slate. However, for James Gunn, it's all about story when it comes to which Dcu projects receive the green light, and this one fit the bill in the filmmaker and studio executive's eyes.
Nexus Point News has shared some additional details today, confirming that Clayface will revolve around Matt Hagen, with an amalgamation of his and Basil Karlo's comic book backstory.

What, exactly, is going on with DC? The answer is, a lot.
After an aborted attempt by Zack Snyder to create a unified universe of characters and subsequent successful one-offs like “Joker” and “The Batman,” Warner Bros. installed James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new co-CEOs of DC Films, under which they will build out an interconnected Dcu of films, TV shows and video games over the next eight to 10 years.
That universe officially got off and running with “Superman,” written and directed by James Gunn, a colorful and buoyant and unabashedly comic book-y adaptation introducing David Corenswet’s Kal-El to the world. The film’s opening weekend box office and assurances from Wbd boss David Zaslav seem to indicate this DC reboot’s going to stick, at least for now. And there’s a lot in the pipeline.

A lot is riding on James Gunn's Superman to successfully kickstart the new DC Universe. However, the DC Studios co-ceo, who also wrote and directed Superman, recently revealed that the blockbuster doesn't have to make as much at the box office as everyone thinks it does.
Speaking with GQ as part of a cover story for Superman lead David Corenswet, Gunn dismissed reports stating that the Dcu movie needed to make at least $700 million worldwide to be considered a success, remarking, "This is not the riskiest endeavor in the world." While he agreed that there is quite a bit riding on Superman, "it’s not as big as people make it out to be," explaining, "They hear these numbers that the movie’s only going to be successful if it makes 700 million or something and it’s just complete and utter nonsense. DC Studios head James Gunn may have revealed his first choice to play Wonder Woman.
In a recent interview with Extra, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” director discussed “Hit Man” star Adria Arjona and teased where he sees her fitting in to his revamped DC Universe.
“I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out [and thought], ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman,'” Gunn shared. “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way.”
“She was in a movie that I made seven years ago,” he added. “We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her.”
Earlier in June, Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that a new feature film following Wonder Woman is “being written right now.” He added that the movie would come in addition to an HBO series about Wonder Woman’s home of Themyscira.

If a good idea comes across James Gunn's desk at DC Studios, he'll take it seriously and, in some cases, greenlight it. Clayface's fast-moving development proves that nothing is off the table in the DC Universe, a mentality the DC Extended Universe should have adopted during its dark periods.
Superman will, of course, be the Dcu's first big-screen project, bringing the Man of Steel back to live-action in style. Supergirl won't be far behind and will likely connect to the events of its predecessor in some way, shape, or form.
The next Dcu movie on the release calendar is Clayface, scheduled for September 11, 2026. This project focuses on the origin story of a villain who doesn't yet have a hero to fight. It seems that James Gunn knows what he’s doing with the character of Batman and the debut of the iconic role in the Dcu. Confirming the appearance of Batman in Gunn’s Dcu, the director may have made a mistake that could backfire pretty soon.
Although James Gunn confirmed that Batman will be making his live-action appearance in an upcoming Dcu movie, this decision will also have a devastating impact on Gunn’s upcoming confirmed Dcu flick, Clayface, because he needs Batman by his side.

Fans might want to sit down for a minute for this, because DC is going all horror soon, with Clayface. Yes! As per Gunn’s recent update on the project, the film will be a body horror and will be “rated R.”
What’s even wilder? The film might have something to do with AI and deep fake. This revelation during his recent interview has left the internet divided. While some are all for the idea, the rest are disappointed. Nevertheless, DC and body horror? This is a win-win!

James Gunn is now synonymous with superheroes, not just because of his stint as director, but also as the co-ceo of DC Studios. However, before he ever directed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad, or the upcoming Superman, he made his directorial debut with 2006's Slither.
The release was a body horror that ended up becoming a cult classic, despite flopping in theaters. Since his responsibilities lie with DC Studios, he's now found a way to connect his love for comics with body horror through Clayface. During an appearance on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, Gunn teased what to expect from the upcoming Clayface, which will likely be R-rated.
As he teased some of the upcoming projects, Gunn proclaimed himself to be a fan of Mike Flanagan, who pitched the story for Clayface and wrote the first draft of the script. The co-ceo has often addressed how...

DC Studios is heading into horror territory with one of its upcoming movies, and it’s not holding back. The film, Clayface, is being made as a body horror movie and is expected to carry an R rating. James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, confirmed this during a recent episode of the DC Studios Showcase podcast.
The idea for the film wasn’t originally part of DC’s main universe plans. But that changed when director Mike Flanagan pitched his vision for Clayface, which impressed the studio enough to add it to the Dcu slate.
Gunn described the project as a smart and intense horror film and said it’s the kind of movie he’s excited about. “It’s rated R … it’s not anything now because the MPA has to watch it, but it’s most likely rated R. It’s pretty intense,” he said.
The movie will be directed by James Watkins,...

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, recently spoke about the movie during the DC Studios Showcase podcast and confirmed that it’s going to be a full-on body horror film, and they’re aiming for an R rating. According to Gunn, the story was so strong and unique that it earned its place in the new Dcu.
