European Championships: Turkey’s Win Over Austria Helps Fox Score Record Round Of 16 Ratings
Image
As the European Championships kicks off the quarter finals, with games including Spain taking on Germany, Fox is celebrating record ratings.

The Round of 16, which saw England beat Slovakia with a last minute overhead goal from Jude Bellingham and Turkey beat Austria in dramatic fashion, was well up from the equivalent in 2021.

This year’s Round of 16 averaged 1.988M viewers across Fox and FS1, up 18% compared to the Round of 16 in 2021 (Euro 2020 was delayed due to the pandemic).

Fox said that it was the most-watched Round of 16 in the Euros ever on U.S. English-language TV. However, it is only the third Round of 16 in the tournament as the number of teams increased from Euro 2016.

Turkey’s 2-1 win over Austria, helped in large part by a magnificent save by Turkish goalkeeper Mert Gunok, drew 1.66M, up 5% from the equivalent match in 2021, which saw Sweden vs Ukraine watched by 1.575M.

The match ended in fairy-tale fashion for the Three Lions, with Jude Bellingham scoring a highlight-reel-worthy bicycle kick goal in the 95th minute to send the match into extra time. Captain Harry Kane’s 2-1 winner sealed the deal for England, which now advances into the quarterfinals. ITV’s audience was a good 3 million more than watched England’s last match of the tournament, against Slovenia, and the biggest TV...

Best Ultimate Team Formations To Use in EA Sports Fc 24
Image
Using the best Formations in Ultimate Team has always been vital and it is no different in EA Sports Fc 24. Despite the series changing its name from FIFA, Ultimate Team remains the mode to play in this year's game. While the main aspect of Ultimate Team sees players build their squad full of the world's best players, small changes in formation can make a difference in tight matches.

There are over 50 different formations available to choose from in Ultimate Team, so there is something for everyone. Chemistry remains key to success in Ultimate Team, but players also have a host of options to tweak their player and team instructions which can be used with any formation. The best formations will change throughout the yearly cycle as new cards are introduced and players adapt, but for the start of the year having cover in front of the defense is key.

La Liga: Four things we learn from Spain's Matchday 3 (Analysis)
Image
Madrid (Spain), Aug 28 (Ians) Spain’s La Liga witnessed a flurry of goals this weekend, with six in the match played in Bilbao and seven in the Villarreal versus Barcelona match at the Ceramica stadium in Villarreal.

As the competition intensifies and teams reach their prime fitness, here are four takeaways from the weekend’s action in Spain.

1. Bellingham Does It Again

Jude Bellingham proved pivotal once again, guiding Real Madrid to a narrow 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo on Friday evening. The England international netted the only goal a mere 10 minutes before the match concluded, reports Xinhua.

Celta, deserving at least a draw, had Strand Larsen’s early goal controversially disallowed due to a ‘foul’ on Madrid’s goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, as determined by Var.

Bellingham’s decisive moment put the spotlight on the stark contrast between the two clubs. While financial constraints prompted Celta to sell their ace Gabri Veiga to Saudi Arabia,...

La Liga: Barca win 7-goal thriller, Osasuna end Valencia's winning run
Image
Madrid, Aug 28 (Ians) Fc Barcelona clinched a dramatic 4-3 victory against Villarreal on Sunday evening, thanks to a remarkable performance from 16-year-old winger Lamine Yamal.

Barcelona seemed firmly in the driver’s seat when Gavi netted in the 15th minute, followed by Frenkie de Jong’s goal three minutes later, establishing a 2-0 lead, reports Xinhua.

However, Villarreal mounted a spirited comeback. Juan Foyth’s commanding header in the 26th minute and Alexander Sorloth’s exquisite finish in the 40th minute equalized the scores.

Four minutes into the second half, Alex Baena’s curveball went past Marc Andre Ter Stegen, placing Villarreal in the lead.

Bundesliga: Dortmund stuck in holding pattern after Bellingham's departure
Image
Berlin (Germany), Aug 27 (Ians) Not only in Dortmund but across Germany, the media is full of reports on Jude Bellingham’s stunning achievements at Real Madrid.

Articles and photos about the 20-year-old England international are often placed near ones reporting about the unsteady times his former side Borussia Dortmund have been going through since the midfielder departed for the Spanish capital in July.

The current state of the team that threw away the 2022-23 Bundesliga title on the season’s final day gives reason for concern after a disappointing start to the new campaign, reports Xinhua.

Consistency and confidence appear like lost property for Edin Terzic’s side.

Instead of a successful promising restart, the side seems stuck in a pattern that accompanied the club since coaching icon Jurgen Klopp left for Liverpool in 2015.

Despite Dortmund having reached calm waters after years of financial turbulence, a consistent sporting breakthrough has been missing.

Sevilla stunned, Girona impress, Granada get off the mark
Image
Madrid, Aug 27 (Ians) Sevilla’s disastrous start to the season continued on Saturday as the Europa League champions were stunned by Girona 2-1 at home.

Yangel Herrera put an impressive Girona side ahead in the 16th minute when he hammered home a loose ball after Sevilla failed to clear a corner, reports Xinhua.

Nemanja Gudelj leveled for Sevilla on the stroke of halftime as he controlled a clearance from a corner and volleyed home, but Aleix Garcia put Girona ahead 10 minutes into the second half with a good finish from a right cross.

Ivan Rakitic had the ball in the net for Sevilla shortly afterward, but his excellent shot was ruled out for a narrow offside. The home side was denied a penalty appeal in the last minute of normal time after the Var decided Rakitic’s free kick had hit David Lopez’s shoulder, rather than his arm.

La Liga: Barca scrape home while Betis and Atletico end goalless
Image
Madrid, Aug 21 (Ians) Fc Barcelona were pushed to their limits in a 2-0 victory over Cadiz during their inaugural league match at the Montjuic Stadium in Barcelona on Sunday night.

The fixture hinted at the challenges awaiting Barca this season, with their Camp Nou Stadium under reconstruction. The vast open areas in the stands and a muted ambiance were palpable, especially against a resilient Cadiz that not only defended stoutly but also created scoring opportunities, reports Xinhua.

Conan Ledesma’s series of outstanding saves kept Cadiz competitive. However, he was rendered powerless when Pedri netted a goal in the 82nd minute. Ferran Torres added another during injury time, a goal that somewhat belied Barca’s initial struggles.

Meanwhile, Betis and Atletico Madrid played out a goalless draw at the Benito Villamarin Stadium. Despite having the better chances, Betis’ erratic finishing prevented them from registering a shot on target. Nonetheless, Isco...

La Liga: Bellingham on target again for Real; Athletic Club also win (Round-up)
Image
Madrid, Aug 20 (Ians) England star Jude Bellingham scored twice as Real Madrid came from behind to win 3-1 away to Almeria in the second round of action in the Spanish La Liga.

The home side took the lead in the third minute on Saturday evening with a header from Sergio Arribas, with the player, who has just joined Almeria from Madrid showing his former club may have made a mistake.

Bellingham levelled midway in the 19th minute after the Var gave the goal as good after he used his shoulder to control the ball and shot home, reports Xinhua.

Bellingham finished his brace with a header in the second half following a Toni Kroos cross and Vinicius Jr added a third with a shot that took a slight deflection on its way to goal.

Athletic Club Bilbao recovered from last week’s defeat to Real Madrid with a 2-0 win...

Barca held, Real Madrid win in La Liga opening weekend
Image
Madrid, Aug 14 (Ians) Fc Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by Getafe in their La Liga debut on Sunday evening.

Both sides finished with 10 players, after Raphinha’s dismissal for elbowing Getafe defender Gaston Alvarez in the first half, while Getafe’s Jaime Mata received a red card after the interval, reports Xinhua.

Barca’s coach, Xavi Hernandez, was also shown the red card due to his apparent discontent with Getafe’s fouling and time-wasting tactics. This frustration was evident as the referee added a whopping 10 minutes of added time in the first half and over 15 in the second. That period culminated with Var dismissing what seemed a valid Barcelona penalty appeal.

Real Madrid secured a 2-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, thanks to first-half goals from Rodrygo and debutant Jude Bellingham. Rodrygo utilized open space to score in the 28th minute, followed by Bellingham’s goal from a corner,...

Football: Real Madrid's Militao set to miss season with damaged knee ligament
Image
Madrid (Spain), Aug 13 (Ians) Real Madrid’s Brazil international defender Eder Militao will miss the rest of the season after the club confirmed that the player ruptured his left cruciate ligament in Saturday’s La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao.

The club confirmed the news on Sunday in a brief statement on their official website, which states: “Following tests carried out on our player Eder Militao, he has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.”

The 25-year-old suffered the injury in the 50th minute of his side’s 2-0 win away to Athletic, which came thanks to first-half goals from Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham. Militao slipped and fell badly while challenging Athletics’ Oihan Sancet for the ball, and immediately called for medical attention.

After receiving treatment on the pitch, Militao was supported by medical staff as he limped off, and afterwards, coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted...

Bellingham on target as Real Madrid kick off season with win
Image
Madrid, Aug 13 (Ians) Real Madrid began their season with a 2-0 win away to Athletic Bilbao but lost defender Eder Militao to what looks like a serious knee injury, just two days after Thibaut Courtois was ruled out for the season with a torn cruciate knee ligament.

Andriy Lunin was in goal for Courtois but had little work to do in a tight first half, which tilted Madrid’s way after first Rodrygo and then Jude Bellingham took advantage of some poor defending from the home side, reports Xinhua.

Rodrygo was given space to fire Madrid ahead in the 27th minute and nine minutes later Bellingham was able to celebrate his league debut with a goal after he was left unmarked at a corner.

The midfielder mishit his shot but had the fortune to see it bounce up and over Athletic keeper Unai Simon.

Militao had to be helped off...

La Liga: Hot weather and financial issues factors as new football season kicks off in Spain (Preview)
Image
Madrid (Spain), Aug 10 (Ians) The upcoming La Liga season commences this weekend amidst a Spanish heatwave, prompting some matches to be rescheduled to 10 p.m. local time to mitigate the heat’s effects.

There are two games on Friday — Almeria hosting Rayo Vallecano and Sevilla squaring off against Valencia –but one of them was rescheduled due to extreme heat.

Victor Moreno makes his coaching debut for Almeria, which recently sold striker El Bilal Toure. On the other hand, Francisco Rodriguez faces the challenge of filling Andoni Iraola’s shoes in the Rayo dugout, helming a squad seemingly less potent than last season’s, reports Xinhua.

Reigning Europa League champions, Sevilla, face off against a Valencia side that has witnessed pivotal departures without notable replacements. This transition has prompted coach Ruben Baraja to lean on Valencia’s youth, evident from the squad’s average age of 22.8 years.

Saturday’s trio of...

La Liga: New season, new name, but same teams set to challenge (preview)
Image
Madrid, Aug 7 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga kicks off a new season under its fresh official name this weekend. Yet, the ‘new’ Liga EA Sports is expected to witness the same teams vying for the title, with Fc Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid emerging as the principal contenders.

It, however, marks the dawn of a different era for the reigning champions, Fc Barcelona. With seasoned players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets exiting the club during the summer, the addition of Ilkay Gundogan, Oriol Romeu, and Inigo Martinez should ably fill the void.

Ousmane Dembele’s surprising move to Paris Saint Germain raised eyebrows, and unless Barca secure another signing or Ansu Fati returns to form, their attacking strength, where Robert Lewandowski is about to turn 35, might falter.

Barcelona will play their fixtures in the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic while the Camp Nou undergoes renovation. The dynamics of playing before...

Football: Real Madrid don't need any new signings ahead of new season, says Ancelotti
Image
Madrid (Spain), July 27 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has said he doesn’t need any more signings ahead of the coming season.

Ancelotti’s remarks were aimed at the recent rumours of a possible pursuit of Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, after goals from new arrivals, Jude Bellingham and Joselu gave Madrid a 2-0 win over Manchester United in their American tour, reports Xinhua.

“The squad is good as it is. We are full,” said Ancelotti, who preferred not to answer direct questions about possible interest for the French international.

“It was a good game, we played well – especially in the first half, with intensity and moving the ball well. We defended well and we played better than in our first game [a 3-2 win against AC Milan].”

“We are good because we have a team with a lot of quality, strength, technique and commitment. That’s the only explanation,” continued the coach,...

Toni Kroos signs new Real Madrid contract
Image
Madrid, June 21 (Ians) Real Madrid announced on Wednesday that German midfielder Toni Kroos has signed a one-year contract extension, which will keep him at the club through June 2024.

“Real Madrid C.F. and Toni Kroos have agreed to extend the player’s contract, which will see him remain with the club through 30 June 2024,” the club’s official website confirmed.

Kroos transferred to Real Madrid in 2014 from Bayern Munich. Since then, he has made 417 appearances, becoming the German with the highest number of games played for the club and has won four Champions League and three La Liga titles, a Xinhua report said.

Although there were slight doubts regarding Kroos’ willingness to extend his contract due to interest from Saudi Arabia, the 33-year-old has chosen to stay with the club.

However, he is likely to have a reduced role in the next season following the €103 million signing of Jude Bellingham.

Football: Brahim Diaz becomes Real Madrid's third arrival of summer
Image
Madrid, June 10 (Ians) Real Madrid on Saturday announced that attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz returned to the club after three seasons on loan at AC Milan and had signed a new contract to keep him until the end of June 2027.

Real Madrid confirm return of left-back Fran Garcia from Rayo Vallecano
Image
Madrid, June 10 (Ians) Real Madrid confirmed the return of left back Fran Garcia from Rayo Vallecano for the next four seasons.

The 23-year-old defender has agreed a four-year contract until the end of June 2027, as Real Madrid paid five million euros for his services after conserving 50 percent of his rights when he joined Rayo in 2020, reports Xinhua.

Garcia returns to the club where he began his career after an excellent season with Rayo, playing over 3,400 minutes in the season which has just finished.

He will help cover the position of left back after Marcelo left the club in 2022 and with Ferland Mendy likely to leave this summer after a campaign badly affected by injury.

When asked about Garcia in a press conference last week, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said the defender “has a lot of energy, he is very fast and attacks very well. He has a good profile...

Football: Dortmund facing significant changes after Bellingham leaves for Real Madrid
Image
Berlin (Germany), June 9 (Ians) Borussia Dortmund shareholders are certainly informed about the club’s official announcements, including the recent news about Jude Bellingham’s transfer to Real Madrid.

While this move may not have surprised many, it adds to the long list of prominent departures the Black and Yellow team has experienced throughout its history.

The departures of Ousmane Dembele (2017/Barcelona/140 million euros), Jadon Sancho (2021/Manchester United/85 million euros), and Erling Haaland (2022/Manchester City/65 million euros) have already established them as well-known figures preceding the highly sought-after 19-year-old midfielder.

Although there are still some minor details to be sorted out between the German and Spanish clubs, the 2012 German champions must now come to terms with the loss of their best performer from the 2022-23 season, reports Xinhua.

Back in 2020, Bellingham joined Dortmund during their pre-season training camp in Switzerland when he was just 17 years old. Initially, he gained the respect...

Football: Champions League exit will bring big changes at Spanish giants Real Madrid
Image
Madrid (Spain), May 18 (Ians) Although La Liga doesn’t end until the weekend of June 3, Real Madrid’s season is to all intents and purposes over following their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League semifinal.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are 14 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, with Barca crowned champions last weekend with four games left to play. Although Real Madrid are locked in a race with Atletico Madrid to finish second, their place in next season’s Spanish Super Cup is already assured after beating Osasuna in last month’s Copa del Rey final.

At the start of the year, the pro-Madrid press were talking about the club winning six titles this season, but in the end, they lifted just the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup and the World Club Cup, in which they defeated Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s Al Ahly,...

Dortmund drop points at relegation threatened Bochum in Bundesliga
Image
Berlin, April 29 (Ians) Front-runners Borussia Dortmund missed the chance to extend their lead atop the standings as stubborn Bochum secured a 1-1 draw in the curtain raiser of the 30th round of Bundesliga.

The hosts caught a fairy tale start on home soil as Anthony Losilla unleashed a hammer from 17 meters into the top left corner to break the deadlock with only five minutes played, reports Xinhua.

Dortmund remained unimpressed and restored parity two minutes later when Sebastien Haller squared the ball into the path of Karim Adeyemi, who beat Bochum goalkeeper Manuel Riemann from close range.

Bochum remained on the front foot as Takuma Asano tested Dortmund custodian Gregor Kobel with all time and space in the 12th minute.

Both sides continued to exchange attacks as Jude Bellingham forced Riemann into action inside the box in the 26th minute before Asano’s shot from a promising position got blocked...

Berlin (Germany), April 2 (Ians) Thomas Muller’s brace helped Bayern Munich cruise 4-2 past front-runners Borussia Dortmund and ensured a perfect debut for new head coach Thomas Tuchel at the 26th round of Bundesliga on Saturday.

With the result, Bayern moved past Dortmund and established a two-point gap atop the standings.

The Bvb caught a bright start on the road as Matthijs de Ligt had to block Marco Reus’ shot from inside the box with seven minutes played, reports Xinhua.

Bayern opened the scoring against the run of the game moments later as Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel cleared Dayot Upamecano’s long pass into the wrong goal.
