It’s the mildly rousing story of an underestimated blonde excelling in a more serious field, something Goldie Hawn aced in Private Benjamin and Protocol before Melanie Griffith took over with Working Girl and Born Yesterday, followed by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde. It’s an easy, against-all-odds rise for us to get behind and a career-defining every-scene showcase for an actor who may have also found herself unfairly undervalued by the industry.

In ‘Deep Space Homer’, a 1994 episode of The Simpsons, the American space agency NASA takes an unusual approach to astronaut recruitment. “We need a fresh angle to get the public interested!” says one NASA official in the episode. “The public see our astronauts as clean-cut, athletic go-getters…They hate people like that.” NASA eventually decide to send a “blue-collar slob” (such as Homer Simpson) to space. Another official pipes up: “I suggest a lengthy, inefficient search — at the taxpayers’ expense, of course.”

That, broadly speaking, is also the plot of Space Cadet, yet another example of the ‘Simpsons Already Did It’ doctrine. Amazon MGM has just released the new trailer for Space Cadet, which has Roberts’ character Rex lying to become accepted into NASA, only to find that she got more than she bargained for. A brand-new romantic comedy film is set to take off as Stampede Ventures has announced that they have greenlit Space Cadet, which will be helmed by writer-director Liz W. Garcia and will star Emma Roberts. The upcoming film will be financed by Stampede with Prime Video joining the project as the international digital distributor, with the movie set to launch exclusively on Prime Video internationally.

Emma Roberts has onboarded Prime Video’s romantic comedy film “Space Cadet” as star and executive producer.

The “Madame Web” actor will collaborate with writer-director Liz W. Garcia, the filmmaker behind “The Lifeguard” and writer of Netflix’s hit film “Purple Hearts.”

The film will follow Rex, a Florida party girl who accidentally ends up training with candidates for the NASA space program. What she lacks in resume credits, she makes up for with heart and smarts, giving her a fighting chance.

Production is set to blast off in September.

The Tribeca Film Festival has announced the winners of its 16th edition, with “Keep the Change” (U.S. Narrative), “Son of Sofia” (International Narrative) and “Bobbi Jene” (Documentary) taking home the top prizes. 97 features and 57 shorts comprised the main lineup of this year’s fest, which began on April 19 and ends on April 30.

“It is more important than ever to celebrate artists both in front of and behind the camera who have the unique ability to share different viewpoints to inspire, challenge and entertain us,” said Jane Rosenthal, Tribeca’s executive chair and co-founder. “The winning creators from across the Festival program shared stories that did exactly that, and we are honored to recognize them tonight. And how wonderful is it that the top awards in all five feature film categories were directed by women.”
