‘3 Body Problem’ Helmer Derek Tsang Bullish on Asian Co-Productions Despite Market Struggles
Image
It’s been a tough few years in the Asian film market since the pandemic, but “3 Body Problem” and “Better Days” director Derek Tsang believes that we can expect growth in Asian co-productions, with grants and regional tie-ups playing a growing role in boosting the sector.

“I can see that many filmmakers are already exploring the possibilities of co-producing films with other regions and their producers. Even our government in Hong Kong is encouraging filmmakers to explore the opportunity by providing schemes that grants co-productions with other countries,” Tsang told Variety in an interview at the recently concluded Hong Kong FilMart.

Tsang began working as an actor in Hong Kong in 2002, and made his directorial debut with “Lover’s Discourse” in 2010. He became the first Hong Kong helmer to earn an Oscar nomination for his 2019 drama “Better Days” – it was nominated for best international feature film at the 93rd Academy Awards,...

10 Excellent Sci-Fi Books That Were Adapted Into TV Shows
Image
Sci-fi, fantasy, and other works of speculative fiction literature all lend themselves to being adapted for the screen through the television format. While movies typically have larger budgets and might reach a wider array of audiences, TV shows are in the unique position to take their time developing the story's world, which is a critical part of science fiction. Introducing viewers to the imagined rules and systems that govern the narrative requires attention to detail and seamless exposition, especially when these works are complex and rooted in real scientific principles.

Plenty of classic sci-fi books should be turned into movies and TV shows, but the ones that have received adaptations in the past few years have been well-received. Sci-fi has been having somewhat of a resurgence, especially in the television sphere, and luckily, there are plenty of amazing books to bring to life on the screen. As budgets increase, as...

Xin Huo’s ‘Bound in Heaven’ Speaks to Domestic Violence and Love
Image
San Sebastian – “Bound in Heaven,” the directorial debut of experienced screenwriter Xin Huo, best known for “Kung Fu Hustle,” is the sole Chinese production in the Official Selection at San Sebastián, following its world premiere in Toronto’s Centrepiece section. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Li Xiuwen, a Huading Award winner as part of the writing team for “Medal of the Republic.”

The story turns on Xia You (NiNi), a successful but emotionally drained woman trapped in a violently abusive relationship with her fiancé, played by Liao Fan, who won a Berlin Silver Bear for “Black Coal, Thin Ice.” In a harrowing early scene, Xia You defies her abuser, uttering the chilling and foreboding line, “Don’t smudge my makeup, the guests are still here,” a reflection of the fragile facade she is forced to uphold.

“The theme of domestic violence against women,...

TIFF Market Screenings Offer “Three-Dimensional” View of Contemporary China
Image
Five Chinese productions are being presented in market screenings on the sidelines of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival in an effort, organizers of the program say, to give North American audiences a “three-dimensional” view into contemporary China.

Put together by the China Film Co-Production Corporation (Cfcc), the selection includes comedian Da Peng’s box office hit Post Truth ($98 million), which focuses on how a former gang boss-turned-burial plot salesman deals with online rumors.

There’s also the pandemic lockdown-themed romance Embrace Again from director Xue Xiaolu, whose breakthrough rom-com Finding Mr. Right (2013) was famously credited with an upsurge in Chinese tourism to Seattle.

Two romance-tinged films from director Yan are also screening this week: Love Never Ends, a tale of old-age friendship and love with a winning turn from Hong Kong action veteran Tony Leung Ka-fai (Election), and Viva La Vida, which follows the relationship that develops between...

Korea Box Office: Lim Young-woong Concert Film Takes Weekend Honors Ahead of ‘Alien: Romulus’
Image
Concert film, “Lim Young Woong Im Hero The Stadium” was the top-grossing film at the South Korean cinema box office over the latest weekend, ahead of conventional narrative movies ‘Alien: Romulus” and “Pilot.”

Data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic) show “Im Hero” to have earned $1.89 million between Friday and Sunday and $3.47 million over its five-day opening frame. “Alien: Romulus” earned $1.66 million in its third weekend and has a 19-day cumulative of $12.5 million.

However, local convention allocates chart ranking according to spectator numbers. According to that logic, “Alien: Romulus” held its lead for a third weekend, having sold a further 223,000 tickets, compared with the 87,000 tickets sold for “Im Hero.” The difference is explained by the concert film’s significantly higher ticket prices.

Lim, who mostly sings ballads and trot songs, emerged on to the scene in a 2020 TV talent show. With good looks and a wholesome,...

The ‘3 Body Problem’ Creators Reveal Their 3 Favorite Scenes From First Season
Image
A sci-fi drama unlike any other, Netflix’s 3 Body Problem provoked a mixture of critical acclaim, fandom buzz and political debate with its rather bold adaptation of author Liu Cixin’s celebrated physics-stuff novel. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss — coming off HBO’s Game of Thrones — teamed with True Blood writer-producer Alexander Woo on the daunting project, which tells the story of humanity’s reaction to a centuries-spanning alien invasion plot. Across eight episodes, the drama combined lavish spectacle with intimate human drama, earning a two-season renewal from the streamer despite its lavish price tag (more than $20 million per episode). Benioff, Weiss and Woo discuss their adaptive choices, the season’s unique tonal shift and their (very different) favorite scenes.

Reading over the responses to this season, it’s clear that even a lot of die-hard book fans were impressed by many of the choices you made for your adaptation.

3 Body Problem: Netflix orders additional episodes to wrap up the series
Image
When Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

The showrunners provided the following statement: “We’re thrilled that we get to tell...

‘3 Body Problem’ Picked Up for Additional Episodes as Show Prepares to End
Image
Netflix announced on Wednesday that it had “renewed” “3 Body Problem,” but the streamer notably didn’t refer to the extension as a “Season 2.” Instead, it appears to be more of a case of Netflix ordering “additional episodes” instead of a new, full Season 2 order.

Per a press release, the exact number of seasons and episodes will be announced at a later date.

It appears that the order will take the series to its finale, as creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo noted in a statement that they “get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion.” In an April interview with Collider, Benioff said the team would “need at least three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story.”

The news came via Netflix first-ever presentation upfront presentation, during which it was also announced that Benioff and Weiss have extended the overall deal at they entered...

“3 Body Problem” production designer Deborah Riley is no stranger to creating epic environments — she won four consecutive Emmys for her work on “Game of Thrones.”

Netflix’s new series reunites Riley with creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss. “That show was vast insofar as cold and hot environments and in its scope and scale, but I had no idea what the term meant until ‘3 Body Problem,’” Riley says, comparing the two shows.

Adapted from the Chinese science-fiction saga by Cixin Liu, the series opens with the Cultural Revolution. Young scientist Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng) watches as her father is beaten to death in front of a crowd by the Red Guard. She’s sent to a top-secret base on the Red Coast where she learns that the Chinese government has been sending transmissions hoping to make contact. TV Activations Return to SXSW — and Why They Should Never Leave
Image
The year is 2296. The place is Filly, the post-apocalyptic “vault” where Lucy (Ella Purnell) must fight to survive in a world already on the edge of extinction. The place is filled with scavengers, ne’er-do-wells, and rules you can’t learn until you’ve broken them.

The place is actually Hotel San Jose in Austin, Texas — but it’s an impressive disguise.

TV and film activations once again took over South by Southwest in March, inviting fans and curious visitors into the world of shows like “Fallout,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Halo,” “3 Body Problem,” and more. For better or worse, the small screen is getting smaller. For every 80-inch TV mounted on a wall, there’s someone downloading their favorite shows to watch on a phone while commuting. TV and film activations offer scale — the 3D version of high-profile directors encouraging viewers to go to theaters, and compelling people to...

Image
The final trailer for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem teases that “they” are coming and reveals the discovery in the ’70s of something called the “Wow” signal. There’s a lot going on in the final trailer, yet it still manages to pull off being as vague as possible. If you haven’t read Liu Cixin’s 3 Body Problem book trilogy, the trailer will hint at what’s in store without spoiling the experience.

Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood‘s Alexander Woo created the series and serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Netflix’s Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series, encouraged Benioff and Weiss to read the trilogy back in 2019, and both were immediately hooked.

“Making Game of Thrones was the greatest experience of our lives. But we spent 10 solid years living in that fictional world, so we wanted something that...

Their return to television sees them at the helm of Netflix science fiction drama called 3 Body Problem.

The synopsis reads as follows:

Update — 6:34 am Pst: Crucindo Hung, chairman of the Federation Of Motion Film Producers of Hong Kong, has told local press that Hong Kong’s Oscars submission, A Light Never Goes Out, was disqualified due to a conflict of interest.

Hung said he had changed the 13 members of the selection committee earlier this year after receiving a notice from AMPAS that members couldn’t vote if they’d been on the Federation’s board for more than six years. However, one of the new committee members is also an actor in the selected film. Detecting a conflict of interest, AMPAS asked Hong Kong to submit another film, but the invitation was declined.

Kyrgyzstan also declined an invitation to submit another film this year when the country’s Oscars submission, Aktan Arym Kubat’s This Is What I Remember, was disqualified because it was released before the required window of December 1, 2022 to October 31, 2023. However,...

3 Body Problem is the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization.

It follows a young woman, whose fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unflinching detective to confront...

Viral Hit ‘Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey’ Pulled From Cinemas in Hong Kong
Image
Cinemagoers in Hong Kong looking to have their childhoods potentially ruined by viral slasher hit Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey may have been left disappointed this week, with the film having been quietly pulled from theaters, a move that has fueled speculation about censorship over an apparent likeness between the children’s character and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The Hollywood Reporter understands that the microbudget British film — in which Winnie and his sidekick Piglet go on a cannibalistic rampage through Hundred Acre Wood — was due to land in more than 30 cinemas in the city this Thursday, but has now been removed from schedules. The film has also reportedly been pulled from release in Macau.

Moviematic, which had organized a pre-release screening of the film in Hong Kong planned for Tuesday, said on social media that its event had been canceled because of unspecified “technical reasons.” Several cinema chains have since removed the film from their websites.

‘Anita’ and Raging Fire’ Share Hong Kong Film Awards
Image
“Anita,” the biopic of the late Canto-pop queen Anita Mui, led the race of the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday night with five awards, including recognitions for the film’s actors and technical achievements. But the best film and best director awards went to action thriller “Raging Fire” directed by the late Benny Chan.

Sunday’s event, which was postponed from its original schedule in April, was the first in-person edition of the awards ceremony after two years of Covid hiatus — the 2020 edition was held online and 2021 was suspended.

The number of films released in Hong Kong has dramatically dropped over the past years as cinemas were forced to close doors for prolonged periods under the government’s Covid measures. As a result, this year’s event was a double edition taking in films released in both 2020 and 2021.

As the first Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony held in...
