‘Monsters’ on Netflix: Yes, Erik Menendez Did Know Oj Simpson
Image
Though it may feel like a McU-level cameo of headline-grabbing names from the ’90s, one of the most surprising claims of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is true. Erik Menendez did actually know O.J. Simpson, at least for a brief time.

Their meeting happened in June of 1994, shortly after Simpson was arrested following his infamous Bronco chase. By that point, both brothers had been imprisoned for over four years.

Here’s everything we know about this stranger-than-fiction meeting and how “Monsters” retelling of it compares to other times Simpson has appeared in Ryan Murphy’s work.

Did the Menendez brothers know O.J. Simpson?

Just like in the Netflix series, Erik Menendez really was cell neighbors with O.J. Simpson. In Robert Rand’s “The Menendez Murders,” Erik said that he didn’t see Simpson cry during his first night but that he could hear him “moaning.” The...

‘Sawed Off’ Review
Image
Stars: Jody Barton, Trae Ireland, Eva Hamilton, Cristobal Hernandez, Charles Chudabala | Written by Hunter Johnson, Jody Barton | Directed by Hunter Johnson

Sawed Off begins with a nightmare sequence before diving into more human issues as Jon makes an infrequent return to his hometown for a hunting trip with his old friend Frank. Complicating the awkwardness the years brought on is the fact they’ll be hunting on land owned by Jon’s ex Marjorie whom Frank also has some history with.

After a lot of awkward questions and a lot of avoiding actually answering them, Frank and Jon head into the woods. It doesn’t take long before the tress attack Jon. Or maybe he just hallucinated it as he finds suddenly finds himself in a clearing. That’s only the start of a series of odd occurrences that lead to Jon accidentally shooting Frank. And Frank returning from the dead,...

Stars: Bruce Willis, Chad Michael Murray, Jesse Metcalfe, Shannen Doherty, Ser’Darius Blain, Kelly Greyson, Sean Kanan, Natalie Burn, Trae Ireland, Simon Phillips, Michael Sirow, Katalina Viteri | Written by Alan Horsnail | Directed by James Cullen Bressack

If you’re a long-time reader of Nerdly you’ll know we’re huge fans of director James Cullen Bressack, so much so that back in 2015 we [unsuccessfully] tried to get his controversial film Hate Crime released on VOD in the UK – I say unsuccessfully as it was banned by the BBFC and we eventually ended up releasing his follow-up To Jennifer instead. Since then Bressack has ventured away from the horror genre, mixing things up with action movies starring actors like Steven Seagal and Bruce Willis.

Speaking of Willis, Fortress sees the actor back working with Bressack (after Survive the Game) as well as two of his co-stars from his previous movies, actors Chad Michael...

Stars: Trae Ireland, Baron Jay, La’Princess Jackson, Joe Karam, Daryl Keith Johnson, Monica Davis, Chris Sapone, Michael Joseph, Viet Wilcots, Tracy “Stresh” Mcnulty, Joe Bohn | Written by Christian Ackerman, William B. Keller | Directed by James Cullen Bressack

I’m always down to watch a film by James Cullen Bressack, I have been since the first time I saw his film My Pure Joy. Since then I’ve seen pretty much every genre film he has put out – including his last, Blood Craft, which was a fantastic slice of mainstream horror from a writer and director more synonymous with extreme fare… After all we’d tried to release a number of his films in the UK via our “Nerdly Presents” banner, an effort which saw Bressack’s Hate Crime officially make the banned by the BBFC list – that’s how extreme his films are/were.

So when I saw his latest film,...

‘Sinister Squad’ Review
Stars: Johnny Rey Diaz, Christina Licciardi, Lindsay Sawyer, Talia A Davis, Trae Ireland, Isaac Reyes, Fiona Rene, Joseph Michael Harris, Nick Principe, Aaron Moses, Randall Yarbrough | Written and Directed by Jeremy M. Inman

To be fair, you know what you’re in for with any Asylum movie that is homaging a bigger-budget Hollywood flick… After all it’s become de rigueur for David Michael Latt and co. to produce what have been affectionately dubbed “mockbusters” for all the big Summer blockbusters: films such as Transmorphers, American Battleship, The Terminators, Almighty Thor, Battle of Los Angeles, and Avengers Grimm. But watching a mockbuster from The Asylum doesn’t neccesarily mean audiences are in for a terrible time, there are often sparks of genius within their films – be it some great casting or an inspired plot.

Case in point: the aforementioned Avengers Grimm, which used the Avengers film format to tell a...

As a determined detective conducts a frantic search, Audra realizes the only way to survive is to escape. But even if she could get away, almost two hundred miles of desert lies between her and help.

Good god, how much does Betrothed want to be The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Much like Rob Zombie used the freakish family format for his film The Devils Rejects and The House of 1000 Corpses; director Jim Lane...

Artwork and Trailer for The Asylum's 13/13/13
This past summer the Foywonder shared the news that The Asylum was bringing us 13/13/13, and since it's now available on Blu-ray/DVD, we thought we'd show you the flick's artwork and trailer.

From award-winning writer/director James Cullen Bressack (Hate Crime, To Jennifer) and The Asylum, the studio behind the social media juggernaut Sharknado, comes 13/13/13, starring Trae Ireland, Erin Coker, and Jody Barton. The film is produced by David Michael Latt, David Rimawi, and Paul Bales.

Special features include a blooper reel and making-of featurette.

In a world where everyone is completely insane and violent, can one seemingly sane man survive? Or in a world where everyone is crazy, is the only sane person the craziest of all?

Synopsis:

For millennia, calendars have added an extra day every four years. In doing so, they violated the ancient Mayan calendar. Now we are in the 13th month of the 13th year of the new millennium,...

’13/13/13′ Review
Stars: Trae Ireland, Erin Coker, Jody Barton, Calico Cooper, Tiffany Martinez, Jared Cohn, Bill Voorhees, Greg Depetro | Written and Directed by James Cullen Bressack

What happens when you team one of America’s best indie horror filmmakers (directing from his own script) with one of America’s biggest mockbuster makers, The Asylum? Well, you get 13/13/13.

Seemingly inspired by Darren Lynn Bousman’s 11-11-11, The Asylum have, since 2011, been releasing thematically similar horror flicks for the past few years. In 2011 we had 11/11/11, and last year they released 12/12/12 and this year we get 13/13/13 (the title will make sense once you’ve seen the film). The Asylum’s previous “demonic number” flicks told of children, anti-christs reborn on earth, and how they were set to bring about the apocalypse. Well now The Asylum have taken it a step further with this flick – the apocalypse is well and truly under way in this ends of days tale…...

The Asylum Releases Third Installment of Doomsday Franchise With 13/13/13
Just in time for Halloween, The Asylum, the studio behind this summer’s social media juggernaut Sharknado, has followed that hit with the final installment of their ‘11/11/11’ horror franchise, called ‘13/13/13.’

‘13/13/13’ is available now on DVD, Blu-ray, and on demand. Written and directed by James Cullen Bressack (Theater Of The Deranged, Hate Crime), the film stars Trae Ireland, Erin Coker, Jody Barton, and Calico Cooper. Erin Coker returns from ‘11/11/11,’ though she does not reprise her role.

In the tradition of horror classics The Hills Have Eyes and The Crazies, ’13/13/13’ blends a demonic possession tale with the end of society as we know it. Its premise is simple and scary: calendars have added an extra day every four years for millennia. In doing so, they violated the ancient Mayan calendar. Now we are in the 13th month of the 13th year of the new millennium, and the few who survive will battle a world of demons.

Sharknado Syfy and Blu-ray Release Dates; The Asylum Announces 13/13/13 and The Bell Witch Hauntings
Several of you who read my Sharknado review have asked when you’ll get a chance to see this astounding motion picture about Los Angeles under siege from a hurricane, shark-infested flood waters, and tornadoes full of apex predators.

I’ll tell you when and also share some news about two new Asylum horror offerings coming this fall.

Yeah, I’m the guy who gave Sharknado a 4-1/2 out of 5 review, and I stand by every word of it. Probably the most fun I’ve had watching any movie this year. I got an advance look; you’ll get your chance on Thursday, July 11th, at 9/8 Central, when the ultimate Asylum movie premieres on Syfy. Or, if you want to wait until DVD and Blu-ray to experience Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, and John Heard contend with nature at its most amok, the film is slated for DVD and Blu-ray release on September 3rd.

Exclusive Set Report and Photo Gallery from H.M. Coakley's Hollaback
Stepping onto the set of writer/director H.M. Coakley’s horror whodunit Hollaback last year on December 18th, the first few things that became readily apparent were the blood trail which serpentined across the wood flooring of the 130-year-old Los Angeles Antebellum mansion (doubling for the deep South) and the flick’s ‘token white chick,’ who came in the form of actress Allison Kyler. The third was the abundance of enthusiasm for the production which was mirrored by cast and crew alike.

Arriving to set on day eleven of fifteen and greeted by Hollaback associate producer and casting director Venk Modur, we conducted the majority of our hushed interviews against the aural backdrop of screams and whimpering as writer and director Coakley led his cast through the film’s scripted carnage.

“It is a sequel,” said Modur of Hollaback, which serves as a follow-up to filmmaker Coakley’s 2006 feature Holla...
