The 45th Durban Intl. Film Festival kicked off Thursday, as the world celebrated the birthday of freedom fighter and South Africa’s first Black president Nelson Mandela, with a rousing defense of hard-won personal liberties and an insistence that the art of cinema remains “as vital as ever.”

“As we celebrate 30 years of democracy and with this 45th edition of Durban Intl. Film Festival opening on Nelson Mandela Day, we also consider the role of cinema and filmmakers in reflecting society and in creating visions of a better world,” festival manager Andrea Voges said at Thursday night’s opening ceremony.

“We should never take our freedom and our right to freedom of artistic expression for granted. Constance Zimmer, Chris Sullivan, Ben Shenkman Rafael Cebrián and Danielle Davenport will all appear in the series. They join previously announced series lead Jeff Wilbusch and cast members Juliana Canfield, Karen Robinson, and Michael Mosley.

Based on the Dror A. Mishani novel “The Missing File,” the series follows NYPD Detective Avraham Avraham (Wilbusch), whose belief in mankind is his superpower when it comes to uncovering the truth. Guided by a deep sense of spirituality and religious principles, Avraham is left to question his own humanity when a seemingly routine investigation turns upside down.

Zimmer will play the role of Anna, Sullivan will play the role of Paul Serra, Shenkman will play the role of Rabbi Cermak, Cebrián will play the role of Brad Holt, and Davenport will play the role of Marcie.

The fifth and final season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” will see the return of Kelly Bishop’s matchmaking magnate Benedetta alongside nine other additional cast members.

Morrissey Management’s First Option Pictures is working with US screenwriter/producer Jonathan Shapiro on a TV drama series inspired by the true story of the Australian who became a champion of the labour movement in the US.

Shapiro has written the pilot of Radicals, which follows Harry Bridges, the merchant seaman who became a union leader in San Francisco in the 1930s.

In a 40-year career he helped launch the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union and battled criminal charges, which were quashed, civil suits and the US government’s attempts to deport him.

TV drama series, “Radicals” is the first project to emerge from a slate intended to span film, television internet, social media and podcasts.

“Radicals” is an anthology series with the pilot script by Los Angeles-based screenwriter and producer Jonathan Shapiro. The story follows Harry Bridges, a little-known yet historic figure who became the champion of the U.S. labor movement in San Francisco in the 1930s and for decades thereafter was the target of anti-unionist politics, prosecution and deportation for his efforts.

“Bridges was born in Melbourne, Australia and never lost his accent,” Morrissey notes. “Discovering and bringing to life these kinds of stories – at once intimate and global – is at the heart of First Option Pictures.”

Amazon Studios has picked up a fourth and final season of Goliath, its original drama series starring Billy Bob Thornton. The news Thursday comes a little over a month after the streamer rolled out Season 3 last month, revealing a new case for Thornton’s conflicted super-laywer Billy McBride.

The legal drama, created by David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro, broke ground at Amazon, landing the first straight-to-series order at the platform which at the time was employing exclusively a pilot model, making its pilots available to the public.

Since its 2016 debut, Goliath has been one of the most popular original series on Amazon, at one point holding the crown as the service’s most binged show. Thornton won a Golden Globe that first season for playing McBride, the hard-living, once-famous L.A. lawyer with a complicated past who seeks redemption by solving cases nobody else can crack.

Amazon has renewed gritty legal drama “Goliath” for a fourth and final season.

The series centers on washed-up lawyer Billy McBride, played by Billy Bob Thornton, who seeks redemption after a client he successfully defended from a murder charge went on to slaughter a family. Thornton won a Golden Globe for his performance in 2017.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has signed an overall deal with Goliath showrunner Larry Trilling.

It marks the latest overall deal by the Svod service, which revealed earlier this week it had closed an overall deal with Lena Waithe.

Trilling became showrunner of the legal drama Goliath in season two, replacing Dexter’s Clyde Phillips, after working on season one of the Billy Bob Thornton show. He will continue to serve as showrunner, exec producer and director of the show, which has been picked up for a third season.

He will also develop new series to premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. He previously worked on Condor and Parenthood.

A crew member was injured on the set of Audience Network’s “Mr. Mercedes” late last week.

Details of the incident were not immediately available, but the producers of the show confirmed to TheWrap that the unidentified crew member is being treated for injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

“A crew member was injured Friday, March 1, while working on season three of Mr. Mercedes in Summerville, Sc,” a spokesperson for Sonar Entertainment said in a statement. “The crew member suffered burns to their hands and feet, is being treated for their injuries, and is expected to make a full recovery.”

CBS has put in development Bodhi, a supernatural legal drama from Goliath co-creator Jonathan Shapiro, Heroes alum Greg Grunberg, who also co-stars and CBS TV Studios.

Written by Shapiro and Grunberg, Bodhi centers on a high-powered lawyer who inherits his father’s small law firm and discovers not only that his father’s clients are ghosts, but that he himself can now see and communicate with them, all of which forces him to pair with his estranged investigator brother (Grunberg) as they resolve cases that will allow the dead to finally rest in peace.

Michael McCarthy was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Bella Bond, the 2-year-old who became known as “Baby Doe” after her unidentified body was found in a plastic bag near the Boston shoreline in 2015, according to multiple reports.
