Lupin the IIIrd Director Takeshi Koike on His 10 Year Journey with Lupin
Image
The latest movie in the Lupin the IIIrd theatrical series, Lupin the IIIrd the Movie: Fujimi no Ketsuzoku ( The Immortal Bloodline ), was screened during Japan Expo Paris in July. During the event, Crunchyroll News had the opportunity to meet with the director, Takeshi Koike, to talk about this new entry, his tenure as director of this franchise and the future of Lupin. Editor's note: The following interview contains some spoilers for Lupin the IIIrd the Movie: Fujimi no Ketsuzoku . How did you approach the creation of this film? Takeshi Koike : Before making this film, I made four different films, each focusing on one of Lupin the Third’s teammates. But, from the outset, I wanted all these films to be linked to the character of Mamo. The other main element of this film, specifically, is the choice of Lupin the 3rd as the real protagonist of the story. At...

August on the Criterion Channel Includes Maurice Pialat, Michael Roemer, Sammo Hung & More
Maurice Pialat in Under the Sun of Satan (1987)
Intended or not, the Criterion Channel’s programming of Maurice Pialat and Michael Roemer pairs two auteurs who spoke the same death-riddled language. August’s lineup will bring nine features and one short from the former, four features and one documentary by the latter, while series on Sammo Hung and Bigas Luna will combine the misery with something poppier, sexier, more violent––the perfect way to close out summer.

On the series side, “’90s Soundtrack Movies” finds the overlap between Lost Highway and Pump Up the Volume; a highlight of Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project features major works like Kalpana and Chess of the Wind; and a new anime program starts with Ghost in the Shell and Paprika. Criterion Editions feature The Red Balloon, Prince of Broadway, Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, Trainspotting, Eastern Condors, and Deep Cover. But one from decades past returns in the franchise's newest film, Takeshi Koike's Lupin the IIIrd the Movie: Fujimi no Ketsuzoku . And fans of the show's classic run will remember this mysterious figure all too well! A new clip released today reveals the return of Mamo, a strange and ancient entity who first crossed paths with the master thief in the 1978 film The Mystery of Mamo (a.k.a. Lupin vs. the Clone ). In addition to appearing in the franchise's first animated feature, Mamo also made an appearance in 2014's Jigen's Gravestone — a brief cameo that possibly hinted at this very more than a decade later. The Best 'Matrix' Sequel Is 'The Animatrix'
Image
It's not hyperbole to say that The Matrixchanged blockbuster filmmaking forever upon its release in 1999. The Wachowskis' sci-fi epic introduced new ideas and techniques to the world of science-fiction cinema, spawning countless parodies and imitations that tried to recapture some of its magic. Not only did it make more than seven times its initial budget, it became a bona fide cultural sensation whose influence continues to be felt to this day.

With the first film being so successful, it was inevitable that Hollywood would want more Matrix. Its two sequels, 2003's The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, did good business but saw some diminishing creative returns, as the Wachowskis labored to turn a standalone film into a three-part epic. But beyond its mainline sequels, the saga also took a side trip into animation, and the result was probably the most satisfying Matrix property outside the original film: 2003's The Animatrix.

Lupin the Third Comes Back With First 2-D Movie in 30 Years: Watch the Trailer
Image
Phantom thieves might be making a comeback in anime, if the recent announcement of Lupin the Third's first 2D movie in decades is any indication. For the uninitiated, Lupin the Third is a story about a master thief by the same name, grandson of fictional French gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. Lupin has a singular voice, bridging comedy and adventure with action, heart, and sex appeal. It's an essential formula in entertainment—because it works.

Debuting in 1967, the series would go on to become one of the most renowned and timeless anime franchises, with Lupin developing an iconic status in Japan and Italy and a devoted cult following elsewhere in the world. Lupin the Third has spawned countless movies, TV releases, and countless manga. Fans have even gotten in on the action, since Lupin's episodic format lends itself well to one-off stories that aren't "canon", per se. However, despite its prolific catalog of adventures,...

Before Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter, Madhouse Went So Hard on a $30M Anime Movie It Nearly Bankrupted the Studio: It’s Now a Cult-Classic
Image
There are tons of animation studios in Japan, but few come close to Madhouse. Madhouse has been in the animation business since 1972 and completed five decades in the anime and manga industry. The studio has produced several big names like Hunter x Hunter (2011), Yu Yu Hakusho, Death Note, One Punch Man, etc.

But in 2009, the studio was left in a sorry state after producing one of the flop anime movies of the year. The movie was called Redline, and it caused the studio to lose millions of dollars. Currently, in 2024, Redline has become one of the cult-classic anime movies even after miserably failing at the Japanese box office.

Redline Has Become A Cult-Classic Movie Redline (Credits: Madhouse)

Redline was released on October 9, 2009 in Japan. But before that, it had been premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival on August 14, 2009. At that time, no one thought it was going to suffer massive losses.

This 21-Year-Old Anime Movie Shows Why Netflixs Terminator Zero Will Work
Image
The Animatrix proved that anime series and movies can enhance Hollywood franchises like The Matrix, suggesting Terminator Zero will do the same. The animation medium allows stories to go beyond live-action limitations, making it perfect for sci-fi franchises like Terminator. Terminator Zero, helmed by Production I.G, is set to release on August 29, 2024.

Terminator Zero is an upcoming Netflix anime based on the Terminator franchise, and while this is a first for the saga that began in 1984, there is a sci-fi anime based on a different American franchise that proves it will work. Terminator Zero is more exciting than Terminator 7 for many reasons, starting from the fact that the Terminator franchise has only had one TV show since its inception, The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The anime series will be set in 1997, which is the year Judgment Day happened in Terminator 2s original timeline.

Timothy Olyphant has been cast in Terminator Zero,...

Star Wars: Visions (2021)
How The Animatrix Set the Bar For What If…? and Star Wars: Visions
Star Wars: Visions (2021)
Long before What If…? or Star Wars: Visions, there was The Animatrix, a collection of nine animated short films set in the world of The Matrix. Released in 2003, between The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, The Animatrix told nine (mostly) distinct stories only tangentially related to the ongoing plot of the Matrix series proper, and Lana and Lilly Wachowski did it by collaborating with some of the best directors working in Japanese animation at the time. I would say that The Animatrix walked so What If…? and Star Wars: Visions could run… except for the fact that The Animatrix fucking soared.

What is The Animatrix?

The Animatrix is comprised of nine short films, with stories ranging from a “historical file” of how the Matrix was created out of the war between humanity and machines in two-parter “The Second Renaissance” to the minimalist black-and-white noir of “A Detective Story” to...

Anime Review: Redline (2009) by Takeshi Koike
It was always obvious to me that Katsuhito Ishii’s style would fit greatly in anime and the fact that the director of “Redline” is Takeshi Koike, who was in charge of the excellent style of animation featured in Ishii’s films “Funky Forest” and “The Taste of Tea”, was another guarantee of excellence. Add to all that the fact that Madhouse was the production studio behind the anime and that the cast of voice actors included Tadanobu Asano, Yu Aoi and Takuya Kimura, and you could easily say that nothing could go wrong with this one. Well, apart from the fact that the production took seven years to finish, particularly due to the over 100,000 hand-drawn frames, nothing did, in one of the best anime movies of the 21st century.

“Redline” is screening at Anime Film Festival 2019

The film revolves around “Sweet” Jp, a frantic and reckless rockabilly car racer...

Redline BluRay Review
(And Manga UK is the first one out of the gate, followed by Madman with Anchor Bay closely trailing in third...) It's not often that I write two reviews for the same film almost within a month from each other, but for Takeshi Koike's "Redline" I will gladly make an exception. Now for those with a big wallet this film was actually available already from Japan with English subtitles, but the first truly English-friendly version (meaning: with an English dub as well) will be released by Manga UK within a week in several editions, with even the most pimped version costing only a fraction of the Japanese disc. "Redline" is one of my favorite films out of all I've seen this year and sure is...

After Dark 2011: ‘Redline’ is a surreal and incredible experience
Redline

Directed by Takeshi Koike

2010, Japan, 102 minutes

Lots of people are saying that anime hit Redline is like taking acid. Frankly, that doesn’t quite do the film justice. Let’s do better. If Speed Racer and Heavy Metal had a child, but the child was exposed to a lot of drugs in utero, was born during a Gwar concert, only ate magic mushrooms, suffered a nerdy, angst-ridden youth, then contracted malaria, and suffered a dream infected with delirium, that dream would be Redline. Watching Redline made me feel party to a war crime. I’m pretty sure that I left the theatre on some kind of government list. I loved every minute of it.

In a nutshell: taking place in a galaxy of bizarre creatures, cyborgs, and magic, racing is the most important thing. Racer Sweet Jp (Takuya Kimura), a long shot with mob connections, wins a spot in the galaxy’s biggest race,...
