There is something to be said about motivational sports films. They make you stand and cheer even when you know the predictable path invariably taken by the genre.

Gold starts off rather roughly, unsure of who the hero of this game-plan is. It is certainly not the boozing Bengali Tapan Das, played in broad strokes bordering on Bong caricature, by Akshay Kumar. So is it Imitiaz Shah, chosen as the first captain of the Indian cricket team? Imtiaz, played with a very peculiar accent by Vineet Kumar Singh, soon crosses the border to Pakistan but is there to cheer for the Indian hockey team in the grand finale in England.

No. Imtiaz isn’t the hero. So it is the royal arrogant hockey champ Raghubir Pratap Singh, a man of stange aristocratic contradictions...

Marathi films make waves at Film Bazaar

Mumbai-based Film City is presenting a package of nine Marathi-language films at Film Bazaar, as part of the Maharashtra state’s initiative to promote Marathi culture.

“It’s the first time the Maharashtra government is promoting Marathi films at Film Bazaar, as a first step towards creating international exposure for Marathi films,” said Sanjay Bhokare, managing director of Film City, who is also the deputy secretary of the Directorate of Cultural Affairs.

The company’s joint managing director Sanjay Patil has brought a delegation of nine directors to Film Bazaar and their nine producers for the Producers’ Lab. The company has arranged industry screenings for all the films, which are also available in the Viewing Room.

The films are mostly first features such as Mrunalini Bhosale’s Kapus Kondyachi Goshta, Jayprad Desai’s Nagrik, Bhaurao N. Karhade’s Khwada, Shrihari Sathe’s 1000 Rupee Note, Abhijit Panse’s Rege and Atul Jagdale’s Ganvesh.

Cinemax, one of India’s leading multiplex chains, today hosted the first look and music launch of rib-tickling Marathi comedy Teecha Baap Tyacha Baap. The movie stars some of the biggest names in the Marathi industry like Sachin Pilgaonkar, Arun Nalawade with Abhijit Kelkar, Mrunal Deshpande, Abhishek Sethia, Uma Sardeshmukh, Jaywant Wadkar, Anand Ingale, Kishore Pradhan, Mrinmayee Godbole, and Shruti Marathe.
