After “Shrinking” star Jason Segel wrapped nine seasons of the multi-cam sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” in 2014, he decided he wanted to break out of his comedy mold. But Segel said he was met with resistance from the industry.
“[It] was like a decade of being on one show and doing a bunch of romantic comedies and stuff, I decided I wanted to see if I was good at dramas, and so I, like, dove in hard,” Segel said during THR’s Comedy Actor Roundtable. And I thought, ‘Look out world. Here comes me doing drama.’ And it turns out nobody gives a shit.”
Then he did the 2015 film “The End of the Tour,” where he played the late novelist David Foster Wallace, which earned Segel excellent reviews. As therapist Jimmy Laird might tell one of his patients, "All good things come to those who wait."
Well, Shrinking has been waiting patiently ... for some major Emmy love. Apple TV+'s hit comedy series only received a pair of nominations for its first season in 2023: Best Comedy Actor for Jason Segel (as Jimmy) and Best Comedy Supporting Actress for Jessica Williams (as Gaby). That's right — even Hollywood heavyweight Harrison Ford (as Paul) was snubbed. But for Season 2, Gold Derby is predicting that Shrinking will be supersized at the 2025 Emmys.
Sometimes it takes a year for Television Academy members to discover a project, particularly in this era of Peak TV when there are so many shows vying for attention. Just look at historic examples like Will & Grace, Fleabag, and Succession — all were virtually ignored for their first at bats, but then exploded with noms and wins for their second cycles.

Fantastic Four: First Steps and Masters of the Air stars are set to lead a Netflix miniseries about an $8 billion crypto scam that happened in 2022. Netflix has multiple crime dramas that have become successful, with the platform being a central hub for a number of shows based on true stories. It is that time of the year, as the Cannes Film Market is underway this month alongside the beloved French film festival. Another project heading out for sales there is “Sponsor,” a new nail-biting thriller that hails from director James Ponsoldt and stars Jason Segel, the two reuniting after working together on the hit Apple TV+ series “Shrinking.”
The pic at Michael Bay‘s Platinum Dunes revealed by Variety will focus on “a drunk driver whose court-ordered recovery program introduces him to an enigmatic 12-step guru, one who slowly drags him into a living hell.” A script for “Sponsor” was co-written by Ponsoldt and Segel.

Jason Segel is going from being TV's favorite therapist in Apple TV+'s Shrinking, to breaking audiences psychologically in his new movie Sponsor. Segel, who co-created Shrinking with Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, has co-written Sponsor with the film's director, James Ponsoldt (who directed several episodes of Shrinking). The upcoming psychological thriller is currently doing the sales rounds at the Cannes Market. There are some strong similarities between Shrinking and Sponsor, but, the new movie probably won't leave you with that same warm and fuzzy feeling by the end of it.
Per Deadline, Sponsor is currently seeking distributors at the ongoing Cannes Market. The film is being repped by UTA Independent Film Group and MK2. The through-lines from Shrinking to Sponsor include alternative therapy and Jason Segal playing a character affected by drunk driving. But, both narratively and tonally, that's where the similarities end. Sponsor looks to be a far darker and more twisted story.

There are only a handful of actors who have achieved the level of stardom and critical acclaim as Tom Hanks. Over four decades in Hollywood, he’s worked with a roster of renowned directors like Wes Anderson, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and Baz Luhrmann, building a filmography rich in variety and range. Known for beloved classics such as Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, and Toy Story, Hanks’ body of work has left a profound impact on audiences worldwide.
However, even for an icon like Hanks, not every film has been a hit. Alongside his masterpieces are a few titles he might prefer to leave forgotten. Whether due to lackluster performances, disappointing box office numbers, or poor critical reception, these movies simply didn’t live up to the Hanks standard.
From early missteps to recent experiments gone wrong, here are five Tom Hanks movies that didn’t quite make the grade.

Apple TV+’s Shrinking is adding an Emmy winner to its season three cast.

Details of how Jimmy’s dad enters the show are being kept quiet for now. Season two ended with Jimmy forgiving the drunk driver (Goldstein) who caused the accident that left him widowed — and himself for how he had previously handled his relationship with his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell).
“You want Jimmy to get to the point where he would leave it all behind for Alice, including his therapy practice and all that,” Segel told The Hollywood Reporter when season two concluded. “I think that’s what makes it the primary relationship.

Somewhere, deep in the forests of an undisclosed location in Europe, there is a valley. The existence of this no-man’s land is a secret known to those with only the highest security clearances. Shrouded in fog and buffeted by steep walls of rock, it is considered one of the most dangerous places on Earth. Towers sit high atop the cliffs on both sides of the canyon, facing each other. One houses black-ops military personnel from the West, the other from from the East. For decades, two lone soldiers have...

Movies to Watch if You Liked A Real Pain: “A Real Pain” marks Jesse Eisenberg’s sophomore directorial feature. As an actor, he has worked on several projects, many of which show him as a majorly anxious individual. His latest project puts him in a similar lane, where he appears just as physically reserved. However, the narrative unpeels so many layers of his personality that it is hard to put him in a single box. The same is true with his co-star, Kieran Culkin, who appears lively and impulsive but has a darker emotional core.
As Eisenberg’s character describes, Culkin plays someone who ‘lights up a room and then shits on everything inside of it’. The film is a buddy tragicomedy about their oddball pair. Eisenberg plays a buttoned-up family man who is facing life’s challenges, presumably, in stride. Culkin plays a free-spirited 30-something man who is stuck in a limbo state.
