Beloved Comedy Series With 94% Rt Score Finally Returns to Netflix After 4-Year Absence
Image
Saturday Night Liveicon Fred Armisen's other hit sketch comedy series is headed back to Netflix.

Per What's On Netflix, Portlandia will officially be returning to the streaming giant after more than four years. The series left the platform back in June 2021, though fans will be able to stream all eight seasons of Portlandia on Netflix once again beginning July 1.

Created by Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, and Jonathan Krisel, Portlandia premiered on IFC back in 2011 and immediately established itself as the latest sketch comedy sensation. The series features an eclectic cast of recurring characters, the majority of whom are portrayed by Armisen and Brownstein themselves, all of whom reside within Portland. Among the most popular of these characters are Candace and Toni, the abrasive and outspoken co-owners of the Women and Women First bookstore, and the Mayor of Portland himself, portrayed by the iconic Kyle MacLachlan.

4 best TV shows coming to Netflix (and 2 shows leaving) in July 2025
Image
We're almost halfway through 2025, and it's been a great year for Netflix shows so far. New shows like Running Point, Ransom Canyon, and The Waterfront have become new fan-favorites, while the likes of Ginny & Georgia and Squid Game have returned with their latest seasons. There's still so much to look forward to this year, with Wednesday, Stranger Things, and more still set to premiere.

Beyond the Netflix original series we can't stop binge-watching, the streamer has also been steadily adding small-screen hits throughout the year that have been getting a second life. Younger became a hit on Netflix earlier this year, while shows like Animal Kingdom, Blindspot, and The Royals have recently begun streaming and striking a cord as audiences rediscover past favorites.

In July 2025, there are even more great TV shows becoming available to stream on Netflix, perhaps the biggest drop of the year so far. Time-tested television titles like the CBS sitcom Mom,...

Heart’s Nancy Wilson: It’s “Embarrassing” To Be an American Right Now
Image
Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson has reflected on the Vietnam War as an embarrassing time for the United States, but says she’s even more embarrassed to be an American now.

In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nancy discussed the band’s classic 1975 song “Crazy on You,” which she and her sister Ann Wilson wrote in response to the Vietnam War.

“We were kind of embarrassed at that time to call ourselves American because of the dirty politics of the Vietnam War,” Nancy Wilson said of the song, adding, “To be as subtle as possible, it’s more embarrassing now.”

In the same interview, Nancy also discussed another Heart classic, “Barracuda,” which focused on the misogyny that the sisters experienced back in the ’70s, saying these days the song “is even more relevant in the salacious billionaire culture with the grab-them-by-the-p*ssy mentality.”

However, she...

Sleater-Kinney Come Up Against the ‘Limits of Denial’ on New Song ‘This Time’
Image
Sleater-Kinney have dropped a new song, “This Time,” one of three fresh additions to the upcoming deluxe edition of their latest album, Little Rope.

“This Time” is a pensive, steady tune driven by warbling keys and keening guitar, though it does briefly kick into double-time rock and roll over drive. In a statement, Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker said “This Time” was the last song they wrote for Little Rope and also “the last to get cut once we decided we preferred the evenness and succinctness of ten songs.

Sleater-Kinney Preview ‘Little Rope Deluxe’ With New Single ‘Here Today’
Image
Sleater-Kinney have revealed “Here Today,” an outtake from their recent album Little Rope.

The track is a meditative rocker that contemplates the brevity of life. It’s paired with a black-and-white video of Los Angeles guerrilla projections — made by activist art collective In Decline — as the lyrics flash across the screen: “You are on the dirty streets/While I sit on heated seats/Pretend we’re not both occupants/Of a world that’s gone insane.”

“We’re excited to share ‘Here Today’ with you,” Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker said in a statement.

Sleater-Kinney Strip Away ‘Little Rope’ Songs for Raw, New Emotion
Image
At the same time Sleater-Kinney were recording their latest full-length, Little Rope, they realized some of the songs would feel different with new lighting. So they recut them with producer John Goodmanson at Portland, Oregon’s Flora Recording. Three of those renditions make up the new EP, Frayed Rope Sessions, which came out today, International Women’s Day. The group will donate all net proceeds from sales of the EP via Bandcamp today to Noise for Now, an organization that helps provide resources for reproductive rights around the country.

Sleater-Kinney Releases Frayed Rope Sessions EP: Stream
Image
On the heels of their January album Little Rope, Sleater-Kinney have returned to offer the Frayed Rope Sessions EP.

The three-track EP consists of reimagined versions of Little Rope tracks “Say It Like You Mean It,” “Hunt You Down,” and “Untidy Creature.” The release also coincides with International Women’s Day today (March 8th) — proceeds from Sleater-Kinney’s Bandcamp sales will benefit the reproductive justice organization Noise For Now.

In addition, Sleater-Kinney have released the video series “Little Rope Unraveled,” where the duo break down the three original tracks that appear on the Frayed Rope Sessions EP. Of the new release, Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker wrote in a statement, “We wanted to step back into these songs, reimagine and revisit them, both for ourselves and for the listener. The different arrangements expose the songs anew, getting at their core or the outer edges. Frayed Rope was a...

Sleater-Kinney Little Rope Review: Another Recalibration for a Dynamic Duo
St. Vincent
Sleater-Kinney’s 2019 album The Center Will Not Hold attempted to modernize the band’s sound by, for one, enlisting St. Vincent as producer. Following the departure of drummer Janet Weiss, remaining members Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein’s self-produced follow-up, Path of Wellness, felt like a course correction—more in line with their established sound, if lacking the grit that characterized the band’s early efforts.

Little Rope leans even more toward hard rock, with an emphasis on dynamics. It’s an approach that’s apparent from the opening “Hell,” whose desolate musings—“Hell is just a signpost when you take a certain path”—are delivered almost a cappella. Guitar feedback swirls ominously, mostly on the first beat of each bar, highlighting the confusion and upset of the lyrics. The song’s chorus serves as a cathartic, if ambiguous, release, with Tucker unleashing a mighty riot grrrl roar over thunderous...

Portlandia "Pull Out King" Episode Recap: Is Nina Pregnant With Lance's Baby
Image
In a sketch called "Pull Out King," Lance and Nina discover they would like a baby after all, showing surprising growth. Carrie's new boyfriend, Sean, decides to stick with being a tax lawyer after an intervention with real musicians. The combination of NPR and concert tailgating is hilariously depicted, with Malcolm passing out from Yerba Mate tea and missing the live show.

In Portlandia season 4, episode 4, "Pull Out King", Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein dig into concert tailgates, waiting too long to respond to texts, and what happens when a couple makes a mistake in bed. Portlandia is an absurdist comedy sketch show like I Think You Should Leave, though with the critical detail that everything in the series takes place in Portland, Oregon. Armisen and Brownstein's hyperspecific series pokes fun at yuppies, hipsters, and all the eccentricities of the northwestern city. It's filled with characters and stereotypes that also...

Sleater-Kinney Dive Deep in Video for New Single ‘Untidy Creature’
Image
Sleater-Kinney has released a new single, “Untidy Creature,” along with a music video for the track directed by Nick Pollet. The clip features Australian freediver Amber Bourke, who holds her breath in a bathtub for the duration of the introspective song.

On the track, the closing number on the band’s forthcoming 11th album, Little Rope, Corin Tucker sings, “But here’s too much here that’s unspoken/ And there’s no tomorrow in sight/ Could you love me if I was broken/ There’s no going back tonight.”

Of the song and video,...

Sleater-Kinney Perform “Say It Like You Mean It” with Fred Armisen on Kimmel: Watch
Image
Riot grrrl outfit Sleater-Kinney took the stage at Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night, performing their new single “Say It Like You Mean It” with a little help from Fred Armisen.

As the band’s Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein jammed along, Brownstein’s old Portlandia costar Armisen emerged from stage right midway through the song, coyly shaking a tambourine. The unannounced appearance didn’t seem to affect the other performers, however: “Say it, say it/ Like you mean it,” Tucker continued belting over building synths and chugging guitar. “I need to hear it/ Before you go.”

“Say It Like You Mean It” is the latest single off of Sleater-Kinney’s upcoming album, Little Rope, which is set for release on January 19th. A follow-up to their lead single “Hell,” “Say It Like You Mean It” was released last month along with an accompanying music video starring Succession‘s J. Smith-Cameron.

Sleater-Kinney Want You to ‘Say It Like You Mean It’ During ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ Performance
Image
Sleater-Kinney weren’t ready to say goodbye during their latest performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The rock duo delivered a soaring rendition of their latest single “Say It Like You Mean It,” which will appear on the forthcoming album Little Rope, out Jan. 19.

Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker were joined by a three-piece backing band (plus Brownstein’s Portlandia accomplice Fred Armisen on tambourine), but led the performance themselves with weighted vocals and electric guitar riffs. “Say it like you mean it/I need to hear it before you go,...

Sleater-Kinney Share New Single “Say It Like You Mean It”: Stream
Image
Sleater-Kinney are back with “Say It Like You Mean It,” another sample of their upcoming studio album Little Rope. The song also arrives with an accompanying music video starring Succession actor J. Smith-Cameron.

“Say It Like You Mean It” sees a more romantic side of Sleater-Kinney, driven by an almost pompous drum beat. It ruminates on the dissolution of a romantic relationship, and the frustration that arises when your ex-to-be just won’t give you a clean break: “Say it like you mean it/ I need to hear it before you go/ Say it like you mean it/ This goodbye hurts when you go,” Corin Tucker sings over a cinematic, sweeping instrumental, both swelling intensely like a pot that’s about to boil over.

Directed by the band’s Carrie Brownstein, the video for “Say It Like You Mean It” centers on a distraught Smith-Cameron in a classy restaurant, downing...

The Shocking Loss and Unbreakable Bond Behind Sleater-Kinney’s New Album
Image
“I honestly just needed to hear Corin sing.”

Carrie Brownstein was headed into a studio in Los Angeles last fall when her friend and longtime Sleater-Kinney bandmate Corin Tucker called to give her the name and number of someone at the U.S. Embassy in Italy. The embassy had been urgently trying to contact Brownstein and her sister for a few days, but neither had current phone numbers attached to their passports, and since Tucker is listed as Brownstein’s emergency contact, the embassy got ahold of her. Tucker suspected...

Sleater-Kinney Preview 11th LP ‘Little Rope’ With Single ‘Hell’; Detail 2024 Tour

Sleater-Kinney have announced their 11th album, Little Rope. Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker also shared the LP’s first single “Hell” on Tuesday. The album arrives on Jan. 19 via Loma Vista.

The LP is set to comprise 10 songs that “veer from spare to anthemic, catchy to deliberately head-turning,” according to a press release. The project was created after Brownstein’s mother and stepfather were killed in a car accident in Italy.

“As Brownstein and Tucker moved through the early aftermath of the tragedy, elements of what was to become the...

Sleater-Kinney Announce New Album Little Rope, 2024 Tour Dates
Image
Sleater-Kinney have shared the details of Little Rope, their upcoming album out January 19th via Loma Vista. They’re celebrating the news with its lead single “Hell,” out now, along with an extensive run of 2024 tour dates.

The follow-up to 2021’s Path of Wellness is billed as “one of the finest, most delicately layered records” in Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein’s prolific discography. But in its complex, ambitious instrumentation is an unimaginable tragedy: Last fall, Brownstein received a call from Italian embassy staff with the news that both her mother and stepfather had been killed in a car accident during a vacation.

Some of Little Rope had been written at that point, but as Brownstein and Tucker brought the material to the studio, all the music they put to tape became imbued with grief. With each vocal harmony and guitar riff, the album navigates loss — not just its initial pang,...

Redbox Announces Deal with AMC to Bring 12 Free Streaming Channels to Service; 'Walking Dead,' 'Portlandia,' More
Image
The world of free, ad-supported streaming has grown tremendously over the past year. New free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) channels and services seem to pop up on a daily — and even hourly — basis. On Monday, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) announced that it was bringing a bit of prestige to the world of FASTs.

The company announced that its free streaming platform Redbox Free Live TV is welcoming 12 fast channels from AMC Networks. The channels will include the various series from “The Walking Dead” Universe, the IFC sketch comedy show “Portlandia,” and the New York sports-focused Msg SportsZone. Filmmaker Jonathan Krisel has been roped into direct ‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu’ sequel. Jonathan Krisel, co-creator of ‘Portlandia’, is in negotiations with Legendary Entertainment to direct the sequel to the live-action ‘Pokemon’ movie from 2019. Chris Galletta will write the script, reports Variety.

Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.

The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

On a cloudy day in late October, at a chic hotel steps from the Champs Elysées, Alicia Vikander sat glued to her phone. The actress was silent, leaning back on an antique chair while her fingers tap-danced across an iPhone screen. She was idle and hard at work, making her stillness pop under the key lights and dollying camera tracking her every facial tic. While the Hotel Raphael ably played itself in this quiet scene, Vikander had more of a dual role: On set was Alicia, the Sweden-born dancer turned Hollywood star, and onscreen she was Mira, a different actress taking a break from blockbusters to shoot an auteur series in France. The echoes would hardly stop there.

Of course, meta is the name of the game in “Irma Vep,” Olivier Assayas’ sly and self-reflective showbiz sendup that finds art imitating life imitating art. Building on the foundations of Assayas...

‘Irma Vep’ Is Shrewd Industry Commentary, Anchored by Alicia Vikander: TV Review
Image
“Deep down, you are an outlaw yourself,” a director tells his leading lady. “It’s what we share.” His star thanks him, taking the remark as a compliment, but insists she’s nowhere as daring as the character she’s tasked with playing.

This moment, in the first episode of HBO’s new series “Irma Vep,” is tossed-off and casual; the actors playing auteur and actress, Vincent Macaigne and Alicia Vikander, are believably weary, film-industry warriors just trying to get through the conversation, and the day. But — as is typical of the work of writer-director Olivier Assayas, who is adapting his 1996 film of the same title — there is a tricky and serpentine truth in the most offhanded of on-set talk. Vikander’s Mira begins the series as a rule-follower — obediently hitting her marks as part of a stage-managed superstar career. And it’s through a new role in independent cinema...

‘Irma Vep’ Trailer: Olivier Assayas and Alicia Vikander Go Meta for HBO Remake of His Movie
Image
French director Olivier Assayas walked a tightrope with his 1996 unclassifiable, meta-moviemaking drama “Irma Vep.” It starred Hong Kong icon Maggie Cheung as herself, starring in a French film whose director was played by cinema legend Jean-Pierre Leaud, as they attempted to remake Louis Feuillade’s classic silent film serial “Les Vampires.” A treatise on Hollywood? A lampoon of the French film industry? A meta exercise in the negotiations between a major actress and a serious director? All of the above.

Now, Olivier Assayas is remaking his own movie for television with “Irma Vep,” coming to HBO and HBO Max on June 6 and now with Alicia Vikander in the role originated by Cheung. The show is first set to stop off at the Cannes Film Festival — Assayas’ stomping grounds with films like “Personal Shopper” and “Summer Hours” in competition and also the original “Irma Vep” in Un Certain Regard — before hitting the small screen.

‘Irma Vep’ Trailer: Alicia Vikander Stars in HBO’s Modern Take on 1996 Olivier Assayas Film
Image
HBO released the trailer for its upcoming limited series “Irma Vep,” from writer-director Olivier Assayas, based on his 1996 film of the same name. Starring Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander (“Ex Machina”) and produced in partnership with A24, the series premieres June 6 on HBO and HBO Max.

Vikander plays Mira, an American film star fresh out of a relationship and disillusioned by her career. She comes to France to play the role of Irma Vep — an anagram for “vampire” — in a remake of the French silent film “Les Vampires.” As she takes on the role, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur, and Mira struggles to grasp the world around her.

Assayas’ original film starred Maggie Cheung as herself and functioned as commentary on the state of French cinema at the time. Like the limited series, the film debuted at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival. HBO’s “Irma Vep” will...
