Sands International Film Festival Opens With Raucous Homecoming Screening Of Carey Mulligan Comedy ‘The Ballad Of Wallis Island’
Image
James Griffiths’s buzzy UK-shot and set comedy The Ballad Of Wallis Island received its first UK festival screening Friday evening in St Andrews, Scotland, as the opening film of the Sands International Film Festival.

The crowd-pleasing comedy arrives at Sands after its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film follows Charles (Tim Key), an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island and dreams of getting his favorite musicians, McGwyer Mortimer (Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan), back together. His fantasy turns into reality when the bandmates and former lovers accept his invitation to play a private show at his home on Wallis Island. Old tensions resurface as Charles tries desperately to salvage his dream gig.

Griffiths told the sold-out Sands crowd after the screening that the film was almost filmed in Scotland, but the production shifted over to Wales after Carey Mulligan signed on.

The Blockbuster Heroines of 2025
Image
2025 looks like a bleak year for the leading ladies, at least in Hindi cinema. Worldwide, too, the really brawny ladies are hardly poised to shine this year: Meryl Streep has no release this year, while her desi counterpart Shabana Azmi will be shining on the Ott platform in Farhan Akhtar’s Dabba Cartel. Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Katrina Kaif have zero releases this year. Put simply, there are no big Shero films coming up in 2025.

There are exceptions, though.

1. Alia Bhatt: She is arguably the one Bollywood queen who will lord over the marquee this year, first in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, where she plays the centre of Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal’s attention. Bhansali has modelled Alia’s looks on Vyjayanthimala. In Alpha, which comes at the end of the year, Alia acquires an action Shero’s avatar.

2. Priyanka Chopra: Straddling both the Bollywood and Hollywood hemispheres,...

How the Simplicity of Bob Marley: One Love Lets Down Its Complex Subject
Image
Quick Links What Is Bob: Marley One Love About? What the Biopic Fails to Address Bob Marley Derseves Better

One of the biggest surprise hit movies at the international box office, Bob Marley: One Love struck a chord with the masses upon release in February 2024. Yet, for all the commercial success, earning roughly $180 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), most agree that the film is a standard, run-of-the-mill biopic that robs the brilliant artist's subject of a fully-rounded portrait. Despite the radiant charms of star Kingsley Ben-Adir in the lead role, the film sanitizes Bob Marley's life story to tell an uplifting story of a positive role model overcoming poverty in Jamaica to achieve international superstardom.

There's a stultifying simplicity to the movie that does a disservice to the three-dimensional complexity Bob Marley was known for. Most telling, the lack of compelling high-stakes drama makes the movie feel like a...

10 Best Drama Movies Of 2024
Image
Despite challenges, 2024 has produced strong drama films with standout performances and compelling stories. Films like "Bob Marley: One Love" and "Young Woman and the Sea" offer intriguing glimpses into real-life events. "Robot Dreams" and "Challengers" showcase diverse storytelling styles and captivating character studies in the drama genre.

In the wake of 2023's dual Hollywood strikes, there's no denying that it is a difficult time for the movie industry. Films continue to fall short of box-office expectations, even when they hail from previously acclaimed franchises (i.e. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) or received universal raves. Nonetheless, there have been solid releases, especially where drama movies are concerned. Packed with some of the year's stand-out performances, 2024's best dramas don't necessarily reinvent the wheel, but they provide compelling glimpses into characters' lives, from decorated athletes to teenagers who find refuge in a TV series.

While "best of" lists have subjective, sometimes nebulous criteria,...

‘Tulsa King’: Terence Winter Returns As Writer In Season 2 As Paramount+ Series Opts Against Traditional Showrunner
Image
Terence Winter, who stepped down as showrunner of the Sylvester Stallone-starring mob drama Tulsa King after its first season, is back as a writer on Paramount+ series’ upcoming second season in addition to his continuing duties as an executive producer. The series, created by Taylor Sheridan, has opted not to bring in a replacement for Winter in line with the practice at the other Sheridan series produced by 101 Studios which don’t have a traditional showrunner. Instead, Tulsa King has hired a director/executive producer whose deal is still being finalized.

As Deadline reported a year ago, Winter stepped down from the showrunner post over creative differences with Sheridan. Winter, who had spoken about how much he enjoyed working with Stallone and loved the characters on the show, was to remain an executive producer on Tulsa King while focusing on other projects.

As the writers strike changed plans,...

Bob Marley: One Love Repeats as Box Office Champ, Madame Web Falls to No. 4
Image
Bob Marley: One Love repeats as No. 1 at the box office. Despite bad reviews, the biopic enjoys high audience scores; Sony's Madame Web suffers major financial setbacks. Timothée Chalamet's Dune: Part Two is anticipated to dominate the box office next weekend.

Forget saving Arrakis because the arrival of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) later this week will be much more beneficial for the box office than that sand-drenched planet. While Bob Marley: One Love does repeat as the No. 1 film in domestic theaters, it’s a rather shallow victory, as 2024 suffers its third-worst moviegoing weekend of the young year. Bob Marley: One Love brings in $13.5 million, while the weekend total of $58.8 million is only slightly better than January 26-28’s $54.5 million and February 9-11’s $37 million.

On the worldwide stage, Bob Marley: One Love managed to make another $49.4 million in international markets, which bolsters its global total to $120.6 million.

New Bob Marley Movie Box Office Passes Huge Global Milestone In Second-Straight Weekend Dominance
Image
Bob Marley: One Love is dominating the box office, surpassing $100 million globally. The film also secured the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office for the second week in a row. It is only the third 2024 movie to pass the $100 million milestone worldwide.

Bob Marley: One Love has continued its dominance at the box office, hitting a huge milestone. The biopic stars Kingsley Ben-Adir in the titular role as the iconic reggae musician and was co-written and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green. The movie, which also stars Lashana Lynch and James Norton, opened at No. 1 over Valentine's weekend, besting the weekend's other new title, the blockbuster superhero flop Madame Web.

Per Deadline, the Bob Marley: One Love release is set to take No. 1 at the domestic box office for the second weekend in a row with a 3-day total of $13.95 million, bringing its cumulative domestic gross to $71.6 million. With an international take of $39.7 million,...

Why Bob Marley: One Love's Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Bad (But Audiences Love It)
Image
Critics find Bob Marley: One Love a standard biopic, with a 42% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Audiences gave the film a 93% score, praising it as a beautiful tribute to Bob Marley's legacy. The movie's divisive reception showcases a stark contrast between critic and fan opinions.

The difference between what critics think of Bob Marley: One Love and what fans think of the movie is stark, and a few reasons explain why their outlooks contrast so greatly. The 2024 biographical musical drama, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Green, Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, and Zach Baylin, revolves around famous reggae singer Bob Marley and is based on his career from his starting days as a musician up until a couple of years before his tragic death. The film is just one of several biopics inspired by notable musicians and is surprisingly causing divisive opinions.

Bob Marley Movie Overperforms In Box Office Opening Despite Poor Reviews & Low Rt Score
Image
Bob Marley: One Love has overperformed at the box office despite middling reviews and a low Rotten Tomatoes score. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the new biopic stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as the titular reggae icon, chronicling how he overcame adversity and became a music legend. The film, which also stars Lashana Lynch and James Norton, debuted to mixed reviews from critics, and currently holds a lackluster 41% on Rotten Tomatoes.

A new report from THR now reveals that Bob Marley: One Love's poor reviews haven't stopped the film from performing well at the box office. The film has actually exceeded expectations, earning $52 million over the course of its five-day opening, beating the $51 million estimate. This includes a record-breaking Valentine's Day haul of $14 million, and another $34.1 million from the four-day Presidents Day weekend.

Bob Marley: One Love Wins the Weekend Box Office Over Madame Web
Image
Bob Marley: One Love wins the weekend box office with an estimated $51 million domestically. Despite its poor performance, Madame Web's budget was only $80 million, potentially saving it from being a complete disaster. No. 3 Migration has now amassed a worldwide total of $256 million.

Madame Web simply got tangled up in all of its many issues, which resulted in some of the worst reviews ever received by a superhero movie — and the box office wasn't any kinder. Sony’s latest entry in the company’s live-action Spider-Verse opened early last week alongside the biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, on Wednesday, February 14. But instead of celebrating the long, Valentine’s Day weekend with Cassie Webb (Dakota Johnson) on the big-screen, cinephiles flocked to watch Bob Marley instead.

New Bob Marley Movie Has Exceptionally High Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Despite Negative Reviews
Image
Bob Marley: One Love garners a high audience score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, despite critics' tepid 43% rating. Some critics find the biopic to be dull and lacking in capturing Marley's legacy, while audiences praise its faithfulness. The divide between critics and audiences on Bob Marley: One Love may stem from differing expectations of Marley's larger-than-life legacy.

The new Bob Marley biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, has achieved a stellar audience score on Rotten Tomatoes despite mixed reviews from critics. The movie sees Kingsley Ben-Adir in the titular role of the reggae legend, following the songwriter's breakthrough onto the international stage and his passion for spreading a message of peace. In addition to Ben-Adir, the film tapped Lashana Lynch for the role of Rita, Marley's wife. Meanwhile, it promised to be a faithful adaptation given the involvement of Rita and Marley's children, Ziggy and Cedella.

Bob Marley: One Love Review – A Sanitized Homage to Peace, Love and Unity
Image
I was both excited and worried for Bob Marley: One Love, a biopic about one of the most emblematic figures in Jamaica’s history, who deeply impacted its cultural and political landscape by becoming a pioneer of the reggae music genre and, ultimately, a global icon. Reinaldo Marcus Green being announced as the director instantly caught my attention since, after all, he’s the filmmaker responsible for one of my favorite biopics of the century, King Richard. However, the involvement of multiple screenwriters – Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street), Frank E. Flowers (Shooting Stars), Zach Baylin (Gran Turismo), and Green himself – as well as Marley’s family production company, raised concerns about potential biases and a lack of critical depth.

When movies come out, we grade them with reviews, define them by box office returns or eyeballs on streaming services, and maybe trophies down the line. Here begins Deadline’s occasional peek into the creative aspirations, and the sweat and blood that propels ambitious films.

Bob Marley: One Love

In today’s challenged theatrical marketplace, it’s particularly pleasing when a plan works out. Slotted against an underperforming Madame Web for President’s Day weekend, Paramount Pictures’ Bob Marley: One Love on Wednesday set the Valentine’s Day opening record with a $14 million gross, and the film has a nice chance to eclipse the initial $30 million long weekend projections. Per Rotten Tomatoes, the Paramount film has pleased audiences (95% approval) more than critics (44%), but Reinaldo Marcus Green’s skillfully made biopic of an iconic artist...

Audio Film Review: Let’s Get Together for ‘Bob Marley One Love’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Bob Marley One Love,” the music biopic of the famous Jamaican reggae legend during his most fertile international fame period in the 1970s up until his early demise from cancer in 1981. In theaters on February 14th.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

The legendary Jamaican is portrayed by Kingsley Ben-Adir, as Marley is shown at the story’s beginning in 1976, at the point right before one of his biggest political concerts. The film then follows his life thereafter through the downfalls of fame, his most fertile chart topping period and his eventual early death at age 36, while showing flashbacks to other points of his life … expanding on his Rastafarian One Love philosophy and the flaws in his all-to-human nature.

“Bob Marley One Love” is in theaters on February 14th. Featuring Kingsley Ben-Adir, Lashana Lynch, James Norton Tosin Cole and Umi Myers. Screenplay by Renaldo Marcus Green,...

Bob Marley: One Love Review - Kingsley Ben-Adir & Lashana Lynch Captivate In A Grounded Biopic
Image
Bob Marley: One Love focuses on Marley's music and his impact, rather than delving deep into his personal life and politics. Kingsley Ben-Adir delivers a remarkable performance as Bob Marley, capturing the singer's mannerisms, speech, and presence. Despite its shortcomings, One Love is a well-crafted film that offers a lovely viewing experience, fueled by Marley's music and outstanding performances.

Biopics are fascinating. The portrayal of real people in a film, especially when it has the blessing of their surviving loved ones, risks the subject being flattened, their history too sanitized. Other times, a biopic can capture the spirit of the person whose life it’s based on. Bob Marley: One Love does both. Set between 1976 and 1978, Bob Marley: One Love ultimately embraces the essence of who Bob Marley was, what he stood for, and the lasting impact he had on Jamaica and the world.

Movie Review: Bob Marley: One Love
Image
The latest narrative film about a musician – Bob Marley: One Love – ultimately plays out more as a celebration of Bob Marley than as a “warts-and-all” biography; and that is to the film’s benefit.

Whereas the film could have become burdened by monotonously moving through Marley’s life from one pivotal moment to the next, it instead bounces around the singer’s story in a whimsical, often spiritual way that enables his saga to take on a more grandiose aura than might have been expected otherwise.

Bob Marley: One Love begins with Marley and his band prepping for a free concert in Jamaica. However, when threats of violence against the singer should he perform put his health and well-being at risk, the actual performance is cut short, and the rest of the film begins to play out. What follows is an inspiring story of the singer’s triumph over numerous...

Bob Marley: One Love Review: Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Hagiography of a Reggae Legend
Reinaldo Marcus Green
Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Bob Marley: One Love focuses primarily on Marley’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) life between 1976 and 1978, during which time the reggae legend fled Jamaica for London and his homeland was plagued by rampant violence and political upheaval. One might think that this limited scope would allow the filmmakers to explore this era of Marley’s life with some measure of specificity, whether in the challenges his marriage faced as his wife, Rita (Lashana Lynch), spent much of this time in America and Jamaica, or how the fractured state of his homeland and his love for its people informed his landmark 1977 album, Exodus. But Green’s shaggy, disjointed film is less interested in the complexities of Marley’s personal or professional life than it is in presenting him as a hero and an inspiration.

One Love’s hagiographic bent is symptomatic of the modern-day biopic, but the shapelessness of...
